Natural convection mass transfer rates at both vertical and horizontal serially connected tubes were reported using the electrochemical technique involving the measurement of limiting currents for the deposition of copper on copper cylinders from acidified cupric sulphate solutions. Measurements were carried out with: (a) one tube active; (b) two tube surfaces active; (c) three tube surfaces active.

The electrolyte concentration and a number of serial connections of tubes were varied to provide a range of GrSc extending from 5.3×108 to 9.5×1011. The mass transfer rates at serially connected horizontal cylinders were in good agreement with mass transfer data in the literature. Correlation of results covered both laminar and turbulent conditions separately. The mass transfer rates at serially connected vertical cylinders were controlled by the boundary layer development at the multi-electrodes. The results for vertical electrodes, which are single, serially connected two and three electrodes, were separately correlated in the turbulent region.

The results illustrate the important effect of boundary layer development in determining current distribution in multi-electrode electrochemical cells.  相似文献

In this Letter, highly resolved measurements of the horizontal velocity inside the boundary layer of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are reported. They were performed in a cylindrical box with an aspect ratio Gamma=1.13 which was filled with air with a Prandtl number Pr=0.7. The horizontal velocity was measured along the central axis close to the cooling plate in a range of Rayleigh numbers between Ra=10;{11} and Ra=10;{12} using a two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter. We demonstrate that the profile of the mean velocity strongly differs from that of classical shear flows like the Blasius shape of a laminar flat plate boundary layer or a turbulent logarithmic velocity profile with standard coefficients.  相似文献

We measure the lifetime of the 5 2D52 metastable level of Ba+ ions confined in a cylindrical radiofrequency trap as well as some parameters which characterize the confining properties of the trap. This is accomplished by studying the ion response to a short pulsed optical excitation saturating the 6 2S12–6 2P32 transition.The measured lifetime of the 5 2D52 metastable level is 47 ± 16 s. The storage voltages for which the ion number shows a maximum are experimentally investigated. Their change when a light buffer gas is added is observed. The effect of this gas on the storage time is also specified.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed using a flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid for Re = 60,000–80,000. Using the two-dimensional particle image velocimetry method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity in water with swirl for Re = 20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 along longitudinal sections. There were neutral points for equal axial velocity at y/(R − r) = 0.7–0.75, and the highest axial velocity was recorded near y/(R − r) = 0.9. Negative axial velocity was observed near the convex tube along X/(D − d) = 3–23.  相似文献

Recently, water absorbed in the porous silica material MCM-41-S15 has been used to demonstrate an apparent fragile to strong dynamical crossover on cooling below ~220 K, and also to claim that the density of confined water reaches a minimum at a temperature around 200 K. Both of these behaviours are purported to arise from the crossing of a Widom line above a conjectured liquid-liquid critical point in bulk water. Here it is shown that traditional estimates of the pore diameter in this porous silica material (of order 15 ?) are too small to allow the amount of water that is observed to be absorbed by these materials (around 0.5 g H(2)O/g substrate) to be absorbed only inside the pore. Either the additional water is absorbed on the surface of the silica particles and outside the pores, or else the pores are larger than the traditional estimates. In addition the low Q Bragg intensities from a sample of MCM-41-S15 porous silica under different dry and wet conditions and with different hydrogen isotopes are simulated using a simple model of the water and silica density profile across the pore. It is found the best agreement of these intensities with experimental data is shown by assuming the much larger pore diameter of 25 ? (radius 12.5 ?). Qualitative agreement is found between these simulated density profiles and those found in recent empirical potential structure refinement simulations of the same data, even though the latter data did not specifically include the Bragg peaks in the structure refinement. It is shown that the change in the (100) peak intensity on cooling from 300 to 210 K, which previously has been ascribed to a change in density of the confined water on cooling, can equally be ascribed to a change in density profile at constant average density. It is further pointed out that, independent of whether the pore diameter really is as large as 25 ? or whether a significant amount of water is absorbed outside the pore, the earlier reports of a dynamic crossover in supercooled confined water could in fact be a crystallization transition in the larger pore or surface water.  相似文献

We present the optical tomography of the probability density of microcavity polaritons, confined in three dimensions by cylindrical traps of various sizes. Collecting the photoluminescence emitted by the quasimodes under continuous nonresonant laser excitation, we reconstruct a three dimensional mapping of the photoluminescence, from which we can extract the spatial distribution of the confined states at any energy. We discuss the impact of the confinement shape and size on the probability density patterns.  相似文献

By means of the canonical Monte Carlo simulations, the vapor-liquid (VL) equilibrium and structure of square well (SW) fluids confined in a single cylindrical pore with repulsive surface, have been studied. Coexistence curves of the confined VL interface are determined for a wide range of temperatures and pore diameters. It is demonstrated that the confinement not only reduces the VL coexistence region but also induces strong inhomogeneities of the VL interface: coexistence liquid densities are different at the pore center and at the wall surface. It may be considered as a preliminary step for an isolated droplet formation inside the pore, as well as a tentative reason of the two VL phase transitions of simple fluids adsorbed into disordered porous media.  相似文献

Some experimental studies of the circumferential mode vibration characteristics of clamped-free circular cylindrical shells are reported and the results compared with some available theoretical predictions. This paper experimentally studies the natural convection heat transfer characteristics on horizontal and vertical plates at pressures lower than atmospheric value. Eight different pressures ranging from 10Pa to 101.325kPa, and three heating loads were used in the experiments. It is found that natural convection heat transfer characteristics at reduced pressures are independent of the plate arrangements and present different behaviors in two pressure ranges, 10Pa < p < 1000Pa and p > 1000Pa. The experimental heat transfer results are correlated into a non-dimensional equation to help the thermal design of stratosphere aircrafts and airborne equipment.  相似文献

The mathematical modelling of unsteady regimes of natural convection in a closed cylindrical region with a heat-conducting shell of finite thickness was carried out in the presence of a local heat source under the conditions of convective heat exchange with the ambient medium. The mathematical model was constructed in dimensionless variables “stream function — vorticity vector — temperature” in the cylindrical coordinate system. The influence of the Rayleigh number, 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 106, of the unsteadiness factor 0 < τ < 300, of the thermal conductivity ratio λ 2,1 = 5.7·10−4, 4.3·10−2, and the energy source sizes on both local characteristics (streamlines and temperature fields) and on the integral complex (the mean Nusselt number on typical boundaries) was analysed in detail. Thermohydrodynamic peculiarities due to the geometry of the object of research were established.  相似文献

First-order perturbation theory is employed to examine sound propagation in flowing media confined by a cylindrical waveguide. The use of perturbation theory allows examination of mode phase-speed changes due to any radially dependent flow w(r) as long as the flow magnitude is sufficiently small. The condition to be fulfilled is satisfied in the flow range: 0-0.3 m/s for the specific values of cylinder radius, ultrasound frequency, and sound speed analyzed in the present work [in the general case, however, the condition in Eq. (1) of the present work must be fulfilled]. This freedom of choice, i.e., the possibility to handle any radial flow profile, is used to analyze two flow profile cases: (1) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a flat profile corresponding to turbulent flow, and (2) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a more realistic logarithmic-dependent turbulent flow profile. In both cases, it is shown that large errors may result in ultrasound flow measurements if several modes are excited by the transmitting transducer, and that a logarithmic flow profile in the turbulent regime leads to somewhat larger measurement errors at high flow values as compared to assuming a simple flat profile in the turbulent regime.  相似文献

A study of dynamic regimes in Bénard-Marangoni convection was carried out for various Prandtl and Marangoni numbers in small aspect ratio geometries (Γ = 2.2 and 2.8). Experiments in a small hexagonal vessel, for a large range of the Marangoni number (from 148 to 3636), were carried out. Fourier spectra and an auto-correlation function were used to recognize the various dynamic regimes. For given values of the Prandtl number (Pr = 440) and aspect ratio (Γ = 2.2), mono-periodic, bi-periodic and chaotic states were successively observed as the Marangoni number was increased. The correlation dimensions of strange attractors corresponding to the chaotic regimes were calculated. The dimensions were found to be larger than those obtained by other authors for Rayleigh-Bénard convection in aspect ratio geometries of the same order. The transition from temporal chaos to spatio-temporal chaos was also observed. For Γ = 2.2, when larger values of the Marangoni number were imposed (Ma = 1581 for Pr = 160 and Ma = 740 for Pr = 440), spatial modes were involved through the convective pattern dynamics.  相似文献

The results of studying the structure of a fixed random-packing layer loaded into a cylindrical apparatus are presented. It is shown that the distribution of the local void fraction in the cross section of the device loaded with a packing layer is quasi-sinusoidal. The maximum value of the void fraction occurs in the proximity of the curvilinear surface bounding the packing layer due to the influence of the surface.  相似文献
