We report an inelastic light scattering study of long wavelength collective gap excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at ν=p/(2p+1) for . The ν-dependence of the gap energy suggests a collapse of the collective excitation gap near . In a range of filling factors close to , where the FQH gap is believed to collapse, we observe a collective excitation mode that exists only at temperatures below 150 mK.  相似文献

The problem of interacting electrons moving under the influence of a strong magnetic field in two dimensions on a finite disk is reconsidered. First, the results of exact diagonalizations for up to N = 9 electrons for Coulomb as well as for a short-range interaction are used in the search for a peculiar ground state corresponding to filling factor 1/3. Not for the Coulomb, but only for the short-range interaction, can the 1/3-state be safely identified amongst the spectra of various filling factors close to 1/3. Second, the propositions of the concept of quasiparticles, as used in the hierarchical theory, are examined in view of the exact results for the disk geometry. Whereas the theory for the quasiholes is in complete accordance with the spectra, for the quasielectrons, finite size corrections make an analysis difficult. For the quasielectron energy, an extrapolation to N→ ∞ is given and compared with the corresponding extrapolations of three different proposals for trial wave functions. While the limiting value for the best trial wave function is very close to the limit of the exact results, the behavior of the finite size corrections of the exact energies and of the trial wave functions, respectively, is qualitatively rather different.  相似文献

We have developed a novel technique that enables measurements of the breakdown of both the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects in a two-dimensional electron system without the need to contact the sample. The critical Hall electric fields that we measure are significantly higher than those reported by other workers, and support the quasi-elastic inter-Landau-level tunnelling model of breakdown. Comparison of the fractional quantum Hall effect results with those obtained on the integer quantum Hall effect allows the fractional quantum Hall effect energy gap to be determined and provides a test of the composite-fermion theory. The temperature dependence of the critical current gives an insight into the mechanism by which momentum may be conserved during the breakdown process.  相似文献

The propagation direction of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) edge states has been investigated experimentally via the symmetry properties of the multi-terminal capacitances of a two-dimensional electron gas. Although strong asymmetries with respect to zero magnetic field appear, no asymmetries with respect to even denominator Landau level filling factor ν are seen. This indicates that current-carrying FQHE edge states propagate in the same direction as integer QHE edge states. In addition, anomalous capacitance features, indicative of enhanced bulk conduction, are observed at and .  相似文献

By the method of capacitance spectroscopy and of magnetotransport we have investigated the and fractional-quantum-Hall-effect (FQHE) states in gated GaAs AlGaAs heterojunctions with tuned electron areal density. Our experimental results confirm the theoretical prediction of the fractional quasiparticle charge in the FQHE state and of the existence of spin-aligned quasiholes and spin-reversed quasielectrons in the fully spin-polarized FQHE state.  相似文献

We use a simple electrostatic treatment to model recent experiments on quantum Hall systems, in which charging of localised states by addition of integer or fractionally charged quasiparticles is observed. Treating the localised state as a compressible quantum dot or antidot embedded in an incompressible background, we calculate the electrostatic potential in its vicinity as a function of its charge, and the chemical potential values at which its charge changes. The results offer a quantitative framework for analysis of the observations.  相似文献

The flux periodicity of thermodynamic properties of an annulus in the fractional quantum Hall state with a constriction is considered. It is found that -periodicity is obtained due to transfer of fractionally charged particles or composite fermions between the edges of the annulus, respectively. The result for the finite magnitude of the persistent current across a very strong constriction is presented, as obtained with an extension of Wen’s edge state theory.  相似文献

We report measurements of the spin relaxation time (T1n) for nuclei in the potential well confining a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system at a single GaAs–GaAlAs heterojunction. At low temperatures nuclear spin relaxation is dominated by electron–nuclear spin scattering: we find that T1n displays sharp maxima at incompressible states throughout the hierarchy of the fractional quantum Hall effect. This behaviour is consistent with the existence of low-energy spin excitations only where the electron system is compressible. Our measurements also provide evidence for a gap in the spin excitation spectrum at .  相似文献

We propose the effective hierarchical partition function which is able to describe both the Jain states and the Jain-type hierarchical states. Using this partition function (effective Lagrangian) we calculate the charge of the quasiparticle excitations. We show that the Jain-type hierarchical states are equivalent to the system of anyons in the external magnetic field.  相似文献

We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of a high-mobility front-gated GaAs/Al Ga As heterostructure. By changing the applied gate voltage, we can vary the amount of disorder within the system. At a Landau level filling factor , where the system can be described by the composite fermion picture, we observe a crossover from metallic to insulating behaviour as the disorder is increased, in agreement with theory. We also report experimental evidence of geometric effect for composite fermions induced by an effective magnetic field.  相似文献

We present a theoretical study of fractional quantum Hall physics in a rotating gas of strongly interacting photons in a single cavity with a large optical nonlinearity. Photons are injected into the cavity by a Laguerre–Gauss laser beam with a non-zero orbital angular momentum. The Laughlin-like few-photon eigenstates appear as sharp resonances in the transmission spectra. Using additional localized repulsive potentials, quasi-holes can be created in the photon gas and then braided around in space: an unambiguous signature of the many-body Berry phase under exchange of two quasi-holes is observed as a spectral shift of the corresponding transmission resonance.  相似文献

We report time-resolved studies of ballistic phonon absorption in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factors of and . The technique used can resolve the interaction of the two-dimensional electron system with LA and TA phonons and has been used to measure the temperature variation of the heat capacity of a single layer of electrons at . The energy gaps at have also been measured and found to be in good agreement with theory. The roles of compressible and incompressible regions in the phonon absorption process are discussed. Angle resolved measurements at are also in good agreement with theory.  相似文献

With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the n=0 and |n|=1 Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher |n| Landau levels. Unlike graphene, the fractional quantum Hall effect in topological insulators is predicted to show an interesting asymmetry between n=1 and n=−1 Landau levels due to spin-orbit coupling.  相似文献

In the study of fractional quantum Hall states, a certain clustering condition involving up to four integers has been identified. We give a simple proof that particular Jack polynomials with α=−(r−1)/(k+1)α=(r1)/(k+1), (r−1)(r1) and (k+1)(k+1) relatively prime, and with partition given in terms of its frequencies by [n00(r−1)sk0r−1k0r−1k?0r−1m][n00(r1)sk0r1k0r1k?0r1m] satisfy this clustering condition. Our proof makes essential use of the fact that these Jack polynomials are translationally invariant. We also consider nonsymmetric Jack polynomials, symmetric and nonsymmetric generalized Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, and Macdonald polynomials from the viewpoint of the clustering.  相似文献

Recent experiments have studied the tunneling current between two edges of the same fractional quantum Hall liquid as a function of temperature and voltage. The experimental findings for low temperatures are at odds with the model where the edges are described as chiral Luttinger liquids, while the data at high temperatures are quite consistent with the same model. Here, we argue that a temperature dependence of the tunneling amplitude, not foreseen in previous works, can explain this discrepancy.  相似文献
