We sketch the foundations of classical electrodynamics, in particular the transition that took place when Einstein, in 1915, succeeded to formulate general relativity. In 1916 Einstein demonstrated that, with a choice of suitable variables for the electromagnetic field, it is possible to put Maxwells equation into a form that is covariant under general coordinate transformations. This unfolded, by basic contributions of Kottler, Cartan, van Dantzig, Schouten & Dorgelo, Toupin & Truesdell, and Post, to what one may call premetric classical electrodynamics. This framework will be described shortly. An analysis is given of the physical dimensions involved in electrodynamics and subsequently the question of units addressed. It will be pointed out that these results are untouched by the generalization of classical to quantum electrodynamics (QED). We compare critically our results with those of L.B. Okun which he had presented at a recent conference.  相似文献

Modified by a logarithmic term, the non-linear electrodynamics (NED) model of the Born–Infeld (BI) action is reconsidered. Unlike the standard BI action, this choice provides interesting integrals of the Einstein-NED equations. It is found that the spherical matching process for a regular black hole entails indispensable surface stresses that vanish only for a specific value of the BI parameter. This solution represents a classical model of an elementary particle whose radius coincides with the horizon. In flat spacetime, a charged particle becomes a conducting shell with a radius proportional to the BI parameter.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture of the nonlinear electrodynamics black hole under the scattering of a charged complex scalar field.According to the energy and charge fluxes of the scalar field, the variations of this black hole's energy and charge can be calculated during an infinitesimal time interval. With scalar field scattering, the variation of the black hole is calculated in the extended and normal phase spaces.In the normal phase space, the cosmological constant and the normalization parameter are fixed,and the first and second laws of thermodynamics can also be satisfied. In the extended phase space, the cosmological constant and the normalization parameter are considered as thermodynamic variables, and the first law of thermodynamics is valid, but the second law of thermodynamics is not valid. Furthermore, the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is both valid in the extended and normal phase spaces.  相似文献

The formulation of the Casimir effect without cutoffs is discussed. Our derivation emphasizes the decisive role of the free-space electromagnetic energy density. The zero point energy arises as an energy per unit volume, i.e., as local (in x space) energy density. It is given by the vaccum expectation value of the free-space Hamiltonian density in the Fock representation corresponding to the non-trivial geometry. The two Fock representations corresponding to the system with and without plates are proved to be inequivalent.  相似文献

A scheme is proposed for generating a three-dimensional entangled state for two atoms trapped in a cavity by one step via adiabatic passage. In the scheme, the two atoms are always in ground states and the field mode of the cavity excited is negligible under a certain condition. Therefore, the scheme is very robust against decoherence. Furthermore, it needs neither the exact control of all parameters nor the accurate control of the interaction time. It is shown that qutrit entanglement can be generated with a high fidelity.  相似文献

We obtain a magnetically charged regular black hole in general relativity. The source to the Einstein field equations is nonlinear electrodynamic field in a physically reasonable model of nonlinear electrodynamics (NED). “Physically” here means the NED model is constructed on the basis of three conditions: the Maxwell asymptotic in the weak electromagnetic field limit; the presence of vacuum birefringence phenomenon; and satisfying the weak energy condition (WEC). In addition, we analyze the thermodynamic properties of the regular black hole in two ways. According to the usual black hole thermodynamics, we calculate the heat capacity at constant charge, from which we know the smaller black hole is more stable. We also employ the horizon thermodynamics to discuss the thermodynamic quantities, especially the heat capacity at constant pressure.  相似文献
