By transforming the optical fiber span into an ultralong cavity laser, we experimentally demonstrate quasilossless transmission over long (up to 75 km) distances and virtually zero signal power variation over shorter (up to 20 km) spans, opening the way for the practical implementation of integrable nonlinear systems in optical fiber. As a by-product of our technique, the longest ever laser (to the best of our knowledge) has been implemented, with a cavity length of 75 km. A simple theory of the lossless fiber span, in excellent agreement with the observed results, is presented.  相似文献

The statistical variance associated with the mode-power equipartition process taking place over an ensemble of similar lossless fibers, is shown to vanish after a traveled distance proportional to the inverse of the source bandwidth. Accordingly, exact equipartition takes place in each sample of the statistical ensemble, thus justifying measurements performed on the single fiber.  相似文献

An experimental study was made of the dispersion and correlation functions for intensity fluctuations of laser radiation at distances of 0.5, 2.4, and 7.0 km. The averaging due to the receiver aperture is less important than predicted by theory. The correlation time for the intensity fluctuations in the strong-fluctuation range is a weak function of the path length. At receiver-aperture sizes much greater than the size of the laser beam, large intensity fluctuations are observed, and the probability distribution for the intensity fluctuations is approximately normal.Translated from Izvestiya VUZ. Using the ray propagation model generalized expressions for the impulse response of multimode fibres have been derived. The analysis has been applied to lossless fibres for pulses having both gaussian and lambertian spatial distributions as well as impulse and gaussian temporal distributions.  为了抑制分布式光纤拉曼温度系统的温漂和瑞利散射光窜扰反斯托克斯散射光,在传感光纤前端盲区后放置光纤取样环,用瑞利散射光解调反斯托克斯散射光及用光纤取样环的温度计算光纤线上其它点的温度,提高了系统的测温精度和稳定性。采用功率100 mW,波长1.55 μm,脉宽10 ns脉冲激光器和15 dB前置光纤放大器,100M14bitA/D转换卡及DSP作数字平均构建光纤拉曼温度系统的实验,实现了测温误差在±0.03 ℃内。  相似文献

This paper reviews the sources of crosstalk, gives its magnitude, and describes techniques to reduce crosstalk. An example is a system that requires 75 optical dB of isolation between transmitted and received signals at each terminal. There are two sources of optical crosstalk. The first occurs in components such as couplers and connectors and can be held below 50 dB by careful design. The second is Rayleigh scattering within the fiber, which increases system noise as well as crosstalk between counterdirectional signals.  相似文献

We present results on the time correlation function of a system undergoing absorptive optical bistability. We first use the Zwanzig-Mori formalism to calculate time correlation functions both near marginal stability points and in the coexistence region. Near marginal stability the theory predicts large deviations from a single exponential form of the correlation function. The truncated continued fraction expansion is shown to become inapplicable close to the coexistence point. The difficulties are due to the presence of long time scales, viz. the very large mean first passage times between the two metastable steady states. When these scales are important we show that the memory kernel relaxation is no longer faster than that of a field fluctuation. An increase in the size of the system increases the disparity of the time scales and thus exacerbates the problems of the projection operator formalism as used here following reference [14].We next present an ansatz for the correlation function incorporating the four major time scales important near coexistence, the two single branch relaxation times and the two mean first passage times for transitions between the stable states. This form of the correlation function avoids the difficulties cited in connection with the use of the projection operator method.  相似文献

Using a variational ansatz for the wave function of the Bose-Einstein condensate, we develop a quantum theory of vortices and quadrupole modes in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We study the coupling between the quadrupole modes and Kelvin modes, which turns out to be formally analogous to the theory of parametric processes in quantum optics. This leads to the possibility of squeezing vortices. We solve the quantum multimode problem for the Kelvin modes and quadrupole modes numerically and find properties that cannot be explained with a simple linear-response theory.  相似文献

Marcatili has proposed a class of graded-index (GRIN) tapers which do not radiate along their length. We investigated the splicing of such tapers to dissimilar waveguides, and derive a simple formula for the coupling efficiency, which clearly reveals the loss due to mismatch of spot-size and the curvature of the wavefronts.  相似文献

We study experimentally the power consumption P of a confined turbulent flow at constant Reynolds number Re. We analyze in details its temporal dynamics and statistical properties, in a setup that covers two decades in Reynolds numbers. We show that nontrivial power fluctuations occur over a wide range of amplitudes and that they involve coherent fluid motions over the entire system size. As a result, the power fluctuations do not result from averaging of independent subsystems and its probability density function Pi(P) is strongly non-Gaussian. The shape of Pi(P) is Reynolds number independant and we show that the relative intensity of fluctuations decreases very slowly as Re increases. These results are discussed in terms of an analogy with critical phenomena.  相似文献

Expressing the perturbation optical field in terms of module and phase, using the linearized nonlinear Schrodinger equation governing the evolution of perturbations, we have deduced the analytical expressions of the modules, phases, and gain coefficients of the perturbations with zero or cut-off frequency, and studied the evolutions of the two perturbations travelling along lossless optical fibers in the negative dispersion regime. The results indicate that the phase of the perturbation with zero (or cut-off) frequency increases (or decreases) with the propagation distance monotonously and tends to its asymptotic value nπ + π/2 (or nπ) eventually. The evolution rates of the phases are closely related to the initial phase values. Although the asymptotic values of the field gain coefficients of the above mentioned two perturbations are equal to zero, and the increasing fashion of the modules is different from the familiar exponential type, it still suggests that the perturbations have a divergent nature when the propagation distance goes to infinity,indicating that the two kinds of perturbations can both lead to instability.  相似文献

We investigated the optical bistability and multistability in an Er3+-doped ZrF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF optical fiber inside an optical ring cavity. It is found that the optical bistability and multistability can be easily controlled via adjusting properly the parameters of the corresponding system. Our scheme may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and optical-fiber communication.  相似文献

The bichromatic optical frequency correlation function for Rayleigh backscattering from a pulse of laser light propagating along a single-mode optical fiber has been calculated and measured. It is shown that the optical correlation frequency, Dnu(c) , is equal to the reciprocal of pulse width T(w) . These results are important for the development of wavelength diversity techniques for the reduction of coherent Rayleigh noise in distributed Rayleigh backscattering single-mode optical fiber sensors.  相似文献

为了抑制偏振态漂移带来的功率变化给传输稳定度造成的影响,设计了一种能够快速补偿偏振变化的频率传输系统。该系统将锁模光作为光源,结合PID控制器反馈调节的原理,利用光功率放大器(EDFA)、起偏器、可变光功率衰减器(VOA)和单片机实现。实验结果表明:该系统能够有效抑制偏振态随着环境改变而发生的漂移,经过10 km传输之后的输出光功率稳定度达到110-5,与自由漂相比提高了200倍。将整个系统应用在光梳频率传输系统中,可以提高系统的鉴相精度,在5 GHz的传输频率上,可以有效消除偏振态变化引入的~50 fs的相位抖动。  相似文献

We theoretically propose surface-emitted and collinear phase-matched terahertz (THz)-wave generation in a conventional optical fiber. The third-order nonlinear effect, four-wave mixing (FWM), is used to generate THz waves in an optical fiber. Surface-emitted THz-wave generation via FWM is realized using a single-mode fiber. Perfect phase matching is obtained at ~800 nm and 1.5 microm pumping, and it follows that third-order polarization in an optical fiber has the same phase at any point. In this situation, the optical fiber acts like a phased array antenna of the THz wave. Collinear phase-matching THz waves are obtained under the same conditions as for surface-emitted THz waves, and the THz wave is propagated in the silica cladding of the optical fiber. This is a promising method for realizing a reasonable THz-wave source.  相似文献
