The adsorption of potassium and the coadsorption of potassium and oxygen on the Pt(111) and stepped Pt(755) crystal surfaces were studied by AES, LEED, and TDS. Pure potassium adlayers were found by LEED to be hexagonally ordered on Pt(111) at coverages of θ = K0.9–;1. The monolayer coverage was 5.4 × 1014K atoms/cm2 (0.36 times the atomic density of the Pt(111) surface). Orientational reordering of the adlayers, similar to the behavior of noble gas phase transitions on metals, was observed. The heat of desorption of K decreased, due to depolarization effects, from 60 kcal/mole at θK <0.1, to 25 kcal/mole at θK = 1 on both Pt(111) and Pt(755). Exposure to oxygen thermally stabilizes a potassium monolayer, increasing the heat of desorption from 25 to 50 kcal/mole. Both potassium and oxygen were found to desorb simultaneously indicating strong interactions in the adsorbed overlayer. LEED results on Pt(111) further indicate that a planar K2O layer may be formed by annealing coadsorbed potassium and oxygen to 750 K.  相似文献

Cu(110)-Ni surface alloys were prepared by dissociation of nickel carbonyl on clean Cu(110). The adsorption of CO is reversible in the temperature region of 22–200°C and the pressure range of 5 × 10?8-0.7 Torr, as monitored with ellipsometry and AES. The amount of adsorbed CO depends on the amount of preadsorbed oxygen but not on the amount of carbon present at the surface. The isosteric heat of adsorption decreases from 31 ± 3kcal/mole to 18 ± 2 kcal/mole with increasing CO coverage (up to θ = 0.14θmax) but is constant for higher coverages (up to θ = 0.4θ max).  相似文献

Adsorption of K on Fe(110), (100) and (111) surfaces was studied by means of LEED, AES, thermal desorption and work function measurements. The monolayer capacity is about 5.5 × 1014 K-atoms/cm2 in all three cases. With Fe(111) an ordered 3 × 3 overlayer was found at fairly low coverages. The work function decreases to a minimum and the initial dipole moments were determined to μ0 = 7.0 Debye for Fe(110), μ0 = 4.4 Debye for K/Fe(100) and μ0 = 3.9 Debye for K/Fe(111). The heat of adsorption decreases from its initial value (Fe(110): 57; Fe(100): 54; Fe(111): 52 kcal/mole) continuously with increasing coverage which parallels the continuous decrease of the dipole moment of the adsorbate complex.  相似文献

The interaction of Cl2 with Ag single crystal surfaces has been studied over a range of crystal temperature and gas pressure. Observations have been made for the (111), (100) and (110) surfaces. Measured adsorption isobars for Ag(100) were used to obtain isosteric heats of adsorption; values ranged from ~ ?60 kcal/mole (of Cl2) at low coverage to ~ ?70 kcal/mole near saturation. The structure formed by Cl2 adsorption on (100) is believed to be a simple overlayer. For (110) and (111) the values obtained for the heat of adsorption were ~ ?55 kcal/mole. On Ag(111) an epitaxially oriented AgCl(111) is believed to form.  相似文献

The surface diffusion of palladium on the curved part of a tungsten crystal is studied by field electron microscopy. The variation of the local coverage distribution is measured by a probe-hole device on the stepped surface region around (001). The measured data allow a determination of the mass transport surface diffusion coefficient D of Pd on W across atomic steps as a function of temperature, coverage and step density. D has been found (1) to be constant for a given step density and for coverages lower than about 5 × 1014 Pd adatoms/cm2, (2) to increase for higher coverages, and (3) to increase with increasing step density for a given coverage. The activation energy of the process is nearly constant (about 24 kcal/mol) for all coverages up to about 6 × 1014 adatoms/cm2, while the pre-exponential factor of D increases with increasing step density. Interpretation of the results gives some information on the diffusion mechanism.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO, O2, and H2O was studied on both the (111) and [6(111) × (100)] crystal faces of iridium. The techniques used were LEED, AES, and thermal desorption. Marked differences were found in surface structures and heats of adsorption on these crystal faces. Oxygen is adsorbed in a single bonding state on the (111) face. On the stepped iridium surface an additional bonding state with a higher heat of adsorption was detected which can be attributed to oxygen adsorbed at steps. On both (111) and stepped iridium crystal faces the adsorption of oxygen at room temperature produced a (2 × 1) surface structure. Two surface structures were found for CO adsorbed on Ir(111); a (√3 × √3)R30° at an exposure of 1.5–2.5 L and a (2√3 × 2√3)R30° at higher coverage. No indication for ordering of adsorbed CO was found on the Ir(S)-[6(111) × (100)] surface. No significant differences in thermal desorption spectra of CO were found on these two faces. H2O is not adsorbed at 300 K on either iridium crystal face. The reaction of CO with O2 was studied on Ir(111) and the results are discussed. The influence of steps on the adsorption behaviour of CO and O2 on iridium and the correlation with the results found previously on the same platinum crystal faces are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of a Pd adsorption layer on the surface self-diffusion of tungsten has been measured using a field emitter technique. By adsorption of 1.2 × 1015 Pd atoms/cm2 — measured by high energy ion backscattering — the surface self-diffusion energy decreases from 70 to 54 kcal/mole, and the diffusivity from 0.95 to about 0.2 cm2/s, which corresponds to an increase of the diffusion coefficient by a factor 40 at 1600 K and 80 at 1400 K. Furthermore are determined (1) adsorption lifetimes in adsorption-desorption equilibria, (2) the isosteric adsorption heat (103 kcal/mole), and (3) the coefficient of Pd surface diffusion on W resulting in diffusion energies of 32 kcal/mole around (001) and 17 kcal/mole around (111).  相似文献

The thermodynamic properties of the adsorption of xenon on the stepped Pd(s)[8(100)×(110)] surface have been studied over a wide range of pressure (5×10?11 to 1×10?4 Torr) and temperature (40–140 K). We have measured adsorption isobars using AES in order to evaluate the surface coverage. By choosing pressure and temperature we have studied under equilibrium conditions, the successive adsorption of xenon on the steps and on the terraces until the first layer is formed, the condensation of the second layer as well as the formation of xenon multilayers. For a small range of pressure and temperature, adsorption takes place only on the atomic steps. The LEED pattern shows that only every other site along the steps is occupied. The extrapolated initial heat of adsorption for steps is EadS = 10.2 kcal/mol, decreasing monotonically by about 2 kcal/mol as the relative coverage of the step sites increases. The dipole moment of the Xe atoms adsorbed on steps is 1.12 D. During adsorption on the terraces the LEED observations suggest that the xenon adlayer is non-localized up to completion of the hexagonally close packed monolayer. The initial heat of adsorption on the terraces, EadT is 8.2 kcal/mol and decreases continuously to a value of 6.9 kcal/mol for a complete monolayer due to lateral repulsive interactions between the adsorbed xenon atoms. The induced dipole moment of Xe on terraces is reduced to 0.49 D. The 5p12 binding energy of Xe adsorbed on terrace sites is 0.3 eV smaller than that of Xe occuping step sites. The differential molar entropy of the adsorbed layer on the terraces as a function of coverage compares fairly well with the calculated value for an ideally mobile two-dimensional gas. No indication of the growth of two-dimensional xenon islands has been found under these conditions. The isosteric heat of adsorption for the second layer is Eadsec = 5.8 kcal/mol independently of the coverage. The condensation of the second layer is a first order two-dimensional gas ? two-dimensional solid phase transition in opposition to the continuous nature of the adsorption of the first layer (extending over a wide range of temperature for a given pressure). The induced dipole moment is further reduced for the Xe second layer to a value of 0.11 D. Finally, the condensation of multilayers proceeds with a latent heat of transformation of Econd = 3.8 kcal/mol in excellent agreement with the known bulk value for the heat of sublimation of xenon. The line shape of the NVV low energy Auger transitions of xenon or the UPS binding energies of the Xe 5p32,12 spectra allow a clear distinction between first, second and higher layer Xe atoms. We have also established the temperature/pressure conditions for equilibrium between first, second and bulk xenon layers, i.e. a so-called “roughening point”.  相似文献

The H2D2 equilibration on Pt single crystals was investigated under intermediate pressure (100–400 Torr) and temperature (50–250°C), as a function of sulfur coverage. On Pt(110) and Pt(111), adsorbed sulfur modifies the kinetic parameters, activation energy and pre-exponential factor; the latter depends on the temperature on Pt(110) only. The clean Pt(110) face was found to be 5 times more active than the clean Pt(111). On both faces, adsorption of sulfur induces electronic effects on the neighbouring reactional sites. The difference in the behaviour of the two faces and a clear influence of the arrangement of the adsorbed sulfur atoms, deduced from LEED diagrams, tend to prove the structure dependency of the H2D2 reaction. A consistent reaction mechanism could be proposed, involving the dissociative adsorption and surface recombination of hydrogen and deuterium, and the reaction between adsorbed molecules for high sulfur coverages. The value of the sulfur coverage which makes the platinum inactive towards H2D2 is lower for the (111) than for the (110) orientation; this is in correlation with the roughness of the surface; the denser at atomic scale a surface is, the further is the extent of the lateral interactions due to adsorbed sulfur.  相似文献

The molecular chemisorption of N2 on the reconstructed Ir(110)-(1 × 2) surface has been studied with thermal desorption mass spectrometry, XPS, UPS, AES, LEED and the co-adsorption of N2 with hydrogen. Photoelectron spectroscopy shows molecular levels of N2 at 8.0 (5σ + 1π) and 11.8 (4σ) eV in the valence band and at 399.2 eV with a satellite at 404.2 eV in the N(1s) region, where the binding energies are referenced to the Ir Fermi level. The kinetics of adsorption and desorption show that both precursor kinetics and interadsorbate interactions are important for this chemisorption system. Adsorption occurs with a constant probability of adsorption of unity up to saturation coverage (4.8 × 1014 cm?2), and the thermal desorption spectra give rise to two peaks. The activation energy for desorption varies between 8.5 and 6.0 kcal mole?1 at low and high coverages, respectively. Results of the co-adsorption of N2 and hydrogen indicate that adsorbed N2 resides in the missing-row troughs on the reconstructed surface. Nitrogen is displaced by hydrogen, and the most tightly bound state of hydrogen blocks virtually all N2 adsorption. A p1g1(2 × 2) LEED pattern is associated with a saturated overlayer of adsorbed N2 on Ir(110)-(1 × 2).  相似文献

The adsorption of activated nitrogen on a stepped Pt(S)-[9(111) × (111)] face was investigated by LEED, AES and flash desorption. Nitrogen was supplied to the crystal from a high frequency discharge tube. For comparison some orienting measurements were also carried out on smooth (111) and (100) platinum faces. Activated nitrogen is adsorbed at room temperature on all three faces up to about half a monolayer coverage. No additional LEED patterns indicating long range order of the adsorbed layer were found. By flash heating a small desorption peak at 120°C and a large peak between 175 and 230°C depending on the initial coverage were observed on the (111) type faces. The desorption can be described approximately by a second order rate law with an energy of activation of 25± 3 kcal/mole. No influence of surface steps on the properties of the adsorbed layer was detected. On the (100) face two coverage independent desorption maxima at 120 and 170°C of about equal intensities were found.  相似文献

The adsorption of NO on Pd(111) was studied by means of LEED, UPS and thermal desorption measurements. Non-dissociative adsorption is characterized by additional maxima in the photomission spectra at 2.6, 9.2 and 14.6 eV below the Fermi level originating from chemisorption levels which are derived from the highest occupied molecular orbitais of NO. Thermal desorption takes place from three distinct states (α, β and γ) corresponding to binding energies of about 15, 17 and 31 kcal/mole, respectively, with about equal populations. The α-state is associated with a 2 × 2 LEED pattern and the β-state with a c4 × 2 structure, whereas the γ-state corresponds to disordered adsorption at low coverages. Plausible structure models are proposed for the ordered structures with θ = 0.75 for the α-state and θ = 0.5 for the β-state. The strong decrease of the adsorption energy is explained in terms of pronounced short-range repulsive interactions between neighbouring adsorbate molecules.  相似文献

Nuclear microanalysis (NMA) has been used to determine the absolute coverages of oxygen and CO adsorbed on Pt(111). The saturation oxygen coverage at 300 K is 3.9 ± 0.4 × 1014 O atoms cm?2 (θ = 0.26 ± 0.03), confirming the assignment of the LEED pattern as p(2 × 2). The saturation CO coverage at 300 K is 7.4 ± 0.3 × 1014 CO cm?2 (θ = 0.49 ± 0.02). The low temperature saturation CO coverages on Pt(100), (110) and (111) surfaces are compared.  相似文献

The thermal and electro impact behaviour of NO adsorbed on Pt(111) and Pt(110) have been studied by LEED, Auger spectroscopy, and thermal desorption. NO was found to adsorb non-dissociatively and with very similar low coverage adsorption enthalpies on the two surfaces at 300 K. In both cases, heating the adlayer resulted in partial dissociation and led to the appearance of N2 and O2 in the desorption spectra. The (111) surface was found to be significantly more active in inducing the thermal dissociation of NO, and on this surface the molecule was also rapidly desorbed and dissociated under electron impact. Cross sections for these processes were obtained, together with the desorption cross section for atomically bound N formed by dissociation of adsorbed NO. Electron impact effects were found to be much less important on the (110) surface. The results are considered in relation to those already obtained by Ertl et al. for NO adsorption on Ni(111) and Pd(111), and in particular, the unusual desorption kinetics of N2 production are considered explicitly. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with the behaviour of CO on Pt(111) and Pt(110), and the adsorption kinetics of NO on the (110) surface have been examined.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO on Rh(111) has been studied by thermal desorption mass spectrometry and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). At temperatures below 180 K, CO adsorbs via a mobile precursor mechanism with sticking coefficient near unity. The activation energy for first-order CO desorption is 31.6 kcal/mole (νd = 1013.6s?1) in the limit of zero coverage. As CO coverage increases, a (√3 ×√3)R30u overlayer is produced and then destroyed with subsequent formation of an overlayer yielding a (2 × 2) LEED pattern in the full coverage limit. These LEED observations allow the absolute assignment of the full CO coverage as 0.75 CO molecules per surface Rh atom. The limiting LEED behavior suggests that at full CO coverage two CO binding states are present together.  相似文献

Angle-resolved sulphur L2.3VV Auger electron spectra have been taken from sulphur adsorbed on Ni {111} at a range of coverages both below and above those corresponding to the ordered (2 × 2) structure. These data indicate that the local adsorption site in the low coverage lattice gas is the same single three-fold hollow site adopted in the ordered overlayer. This contrasts with the low coverage occupation of both three-fold hollow sites for the system I/Ag<{111}.  相似文献

A detailed study of CO adsorption on Ni(100) utilizing static SIMS and a comparison of the data with surface coverage data from the literature shows that there is a linear relationship between CO coverage and the peak intensity ratios (MCO+/M+ and M2CO+/M+2) of the CO-containing secondary ions, in the region of coverage below which the adlayer becomes compressed. Adsorption isobares were obtained using the intensity ratios and from these, adsorption isosteres were derjved to give heats of adsorption as a function of coverage. These data are in very close agreement with the literature. Confirmatory data were obtained for this relationship for CO adsorption on polycrystalline Ni, Pd, Pt and Cu and Cu(100). The application of this technique of surface coverage measurements to a study of the extent to which H2S coadsorption reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO on Ni(110), (100) and (111) shows that these faces are poisoned in the order (100) > (111) > (110). Surface coverage measurements on the non-closepacked (110) face are affected by the apparent insensitivity of SIMS to adsorbates located in the “channels”.  相似文献

The adsorption and flash desorption of hydrogen and the equilibration of H2 and D2 has been studied on the (110), (211), (111) and (100) planes of platinum. Desorption from Pt (211), a stepped surface composed of (111) and (100) ledges, yields a desorption spectrum which apparently is a composite of desorption from the individual ledges. Pt (110) is quite similar to the tungsten structural analog, W (211), in that both yield two-peak desorption spectra, and on both planes adsorption kinetics are dramatically different for filling of the two states. On all four planes adsorption kinetics are apparently proportional to (1 ? θ)2, and estimates of the initial sticking probabilities show them to decrease in the order: (110) > (211) > (100) > (111). Equilibration activity follows approximately the same order [(110) > (211) > (111) > (100)] with a factor of ~ 5 difference between the most and least active planes; no extraordinary activity is observed for the stepped surface, Pt(211). Below ~ 570 K equilibration of H2 and D2 is activated by less than 2 kcal/mole with the magnitude dependent on the specific face, and above this temperature the reaction is nonactivated. The non-activated case apparently results from absorption followed by statistical mixing on the surface. Calculated rates for HD production per cm2 based on this model are in excellent agreement with the experimental values for Pt(110) and Pt(211), and in somewhat poorer agreement in the case of Pt (111) and Pt (100). This latter is probably due to the greater inaccuracy in the values of the sticking coefficients on these planes.  相似文献

The adsorption of carbon monoxide on epitaxial (100) and (111) planes of Ag/Pd alloys with definite surface compositions has been studied by means of LEED, Auger electron spectroscopy and work function measurements. The formation of ordered adsorbed structures is prevented by even small amounts of silver in the surfaces. The maximum variation of the work function with CO adsorption bears no simple relationship to the surface composition. From measured adsorption isotherms the isosteric heats of adsorption have been evaluated. For CO adsorption on pure Pd planes the adsorption energies Ead are either constant or decrease slowly up to high coverages, whereas a continuous decrease was observed with the alloys indicating the energetical heterogeneity. The results are discussed on the basis of our knowledge about the nature of the CO chemisorption and about the electronic structure of Ag/Pd alloys.  相似文献
