Surface structures of several different poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) materials, tetraethoxysilane-cured hydroxy-terminated PDMS (TEOS-PDMS), platinum-cured vinyl-terminated PDMS (Pt-PDMS), platinum-cured vinyl-terminated poly(diphenylsiloxane)-co-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDPS-co-PDMS), and PDMS-co-polystyrene (PDMS-co-PS) copolymer in air and water have been investigated by sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The SFG spectra collected from all PDMS surfaces in both air and water are dominated by methyl group stretches, indicating that all the surfaces are mainly covered by methyl groups. Other than surface-dominating methyl groups, some -Si-CH2-CH2- moieties on the Pt-PDMS surface have also been detected in air, which are present at cross-linking points. Information about the average orientation angle and angle distribution of the methyl groups on the PDMS surface has been evaluated. Surface restructuring of the methyl groups has been observed for all PDMS surfaces in water. Upon contacting water, the methyl groups on all PDMS surfaces tilt more toward the surface. The detailed restructuring behaviors of several PDMS surfaces in water and the effects of molecular weight on restructuring behaviors have been investigated. For comparison, in addition to air and water, surface structures of PDMS materials mentioned above in a nonpolar solvent, FC-75, have also been studied. By comparing the different response of phenyl groups to water on both PDPS-co-PDMS and PS-co-PDMS surfaces, we have demonstrated how the restructuring behaviors of surface phenyl groups are affected by the structural flexibility of the molecular chains where they are attached.  相似文献

Marine organisms such as plants, algae or small animals can adhere to surfaces of materials that are submerged in ocean. The accumulation of these organisms on surfaces is a marine biofouling process that has considerable adverse effects. Marine biofouling on ship hulls can cause severe fuel consumption increase. Investigations on antifouling polymers are therefore becoming important research topics for marine vessel operations. Antifouling polymers can be applied as coating layers on the ship hull, protecting it against the settlement and growth of sea organisms. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrophilic polymer that can effectively resist the accumulation of marine organisms. PEG-based antifouling coatings have therefore been extensively researched and developed. However, the inferior stability of PEG makes it subject to degradation, rendering it ineffective for long-term services. Zwitterionic polymers have also emerged as promising antifouling materials in recent years. These polymers consist of both positively charged and negatively charged functional groups. Various zwitterionic polymers have been demonstrated to exhibit exceptional antifouling properties. Previously, surface characterizations of zwitterionic polymers have revealed that strong surface hydration is critical for their antifouling properties. In addition to these hydrophilic polymers, amphiphilic materials have also been developed as potential antifouling coatings. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups are incorporated into the backbones or sidechains of these polymers. It has been demonstrated that the antifouling performance can be enhanced by precisely controlling the sequence of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic functionalities. Since biofouling generally occurs at the outer surface of the coatings, the antifouling properties of these coatings are closely related to their surface characteristics in water. Therefore, understanding of the surface molecular structures of antifouling materials is imperative for their future developments. In this review, we will summarize our recent advancements of antifouling material surface analysis using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG is a surface-sensitive technique which can provide molecular information of water and polymer structures at interfaces in situ in real time. The antifouling polymers we will review include zwitterionic polymer brushes, mixed charged polymers, and amphiphilic polypeptoids. Interfacial hydration studies of these polymers by SFG will be presented. The salt effect on antifouling polymer surface hydration will also be discussed. In addition, the interactions between antifouling materials and protein molecules as well as algae will be reviewed. The above research clearly established strong correlations between strong surface hydration and good antifouling properties. It also demonstrated that SFG is a powerful technique to provide molecular level understanding of polymer antifouling mechanisms.  相似文献

An investigation into the hemo‐biocompatibility of calix[4]resorcinarenetetrathiol and calix‐PEG derivative coatings on gold electrodes is reported, with respect to the detection of the ascorbate ion in aqueous solution. The electrochemical behavior of the ascorbate ion at calix‐modified electrodes is also discussed. Findings show that a facilitated adsorption of ascorbate from solution is seen at calix‐modified gold electrodes. Following exposure to whole human blood, calix‐PEG derivative coatings were seen to offer some protection against both outer‐surface biofouling and electrode passivation effects in comparison to calix[4]resorcinarenetetrathiol counterparts. The individual effects of outer surface biofouling and electrode passivation on exposure to whole blood have been investigated. Our findings suggest that PEG moieties help prevent sorption of the biofouling film, thus possibly minimizing the release of a number of low molecular weight solutes which are thought to be involved with the passivation of electrode responses within clinical bio‐ and chemical sensors.  相似文献

This paper contains a kind of ultraviolet‐cured antifogging and antibacterial coating. A quaternary ammonium salt (14QAS), which was synthesized in this paper, has been implemented as a monomer. The chemical structure of 14QAS has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The nitrogen atom on the surface of the coatings with 14QAS was observed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Surface wettability of the polymer film was studied by contact angle analysis, which confirmed the hydrophilicity of the coatings with low water contact angle (~25°). The antifog properties were evaluated under different conditions. The antibacterial activity of coatings with 14QAS reached 99.9% against S. aureus and E. coli. Controllable phase segregation adjustment for immiscible polymer blends has always been tough, which hinders the development of amphiphilic antifouling coatings from more accessible blends. Herein, methacrylated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS‐MA) was synthesized and mixed with poly(ethylene glycol)methylether methacrylate (PEG‐MA). It was interestingly discovered that these PDMS‐MA/PEG‐MA blends displayed upper critical solution temperatures (UCST) due to thermo‐induced conformational change of PEG‐MA and the UCST changed with PDMS‐MA/PEG‐MA mass ratios. Micro‐/nano‐phase segregation, nanophase segregation, or homogenous morphology were therefore achieved. These PDMS‐MA/PEG‐MA blends with different mass ratios were UV‐cured under varying temperatures to fabricate coatings. Their surface morphology and wettability are readily adjusted by phase segregation. For the first time, highly hydrophilic surface was achieved for coatings with microphase segregation because of the exposure of PEG‐rich domains, which exhibited an enhanced protein resistance against bovine serum albumin (BSA). Anti‐bacterial performance (Shewanella loihica) was also observed for these PDMS/PEG coatings. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2016 , 54, 1612–1623  相似文献

Libraries of siloxane-polyurethane coatings were designed, formulated, and screened using high-throughput experimentation. Four independent variables that were analyzed were the molecular weight of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), presence or absence of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) blocks attached to the PDMS backbone, the length of the PCL blocks, and the siloxane polymer level in the coating formulations. In addition to the siloxane libraries (3-aminopropyl-terminated PDMS and poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL-PDMS-PCL) triblock copolymers), the coating formulation included a trifunctional isocyanate crosslinker, trifunctional poly(epsilon-caprolactone) polyol, 2,4-pentanedione (pot-life extender), dibutyltin diacetate (catalyst), and a blend of solvents. The resulting coatings were analyzed for their surface energy and pseudobarnacle adhesion both before and after aging the coatings for 30 days in water. The water and methylene iodide contact angle averages increase with increasing molecular weight of PDMS. Coatings prepared from PCL-PDMS-PCL triblock copolymers have lower surface energies than coatings prepared from 3-aminopropyl-terminated PDMS; however, lower pseudobarnacle adhesion results were obtained for the coatings prepared from 3-aminopropyl-terminated PDMS than coatings prepared from PCL-PDMS-PCL triblock copolymers. The siloxane polymer level in the coating formulations does not have a significant effect on the surface energy of the coatings, but it resulted in higher pseudobarnacle adhesion.  相似文献

The segregation behavior of binary polymer blends at hydrophilic solid sapphire and air interfaces was investigated by infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG spectra were collected from a bulk miscible blend consisting of identical molecular weight (approximately 54,000) and similar surface free energy (29-35 dyn/cm) components of atactic polypropylene (aPP) and aspecific poly(ethylene-co-propylene) rubber (aEPR). Characteristic CH resonances of the blend were contrasted with those of the individual components at both buried (sapphire/polymer) and free (air/polymer) interfaces. Preferential segregation of the aPP component was observed after annealing at both air/polymer and sapphire/polymer interfaces. SFG spectra revealed ordering of the polymer backbone segments with the methylene (CH2) groups perpendicular to the surface at the sapphire interface and the methyl (CH3) groups upright at the air interface. The SFG results indicate that the surface composition can be determined from the peak intensities that are characteristic of each component and that conformational entropy played a likely role in surface segregation. aPP occupied a smaller free volume at the surface because of a statistically smaller segment length (aPP is more flexible and has a shorter length). In addition, the high density of the ordered CH3 side branches enhanced the surface activity by allowing the long-chain backbone segments of aPP to order at the surface.  相似文献

The preparation and interfacial properties of a new type of tethered, thin-film lubricant coating are presented. These coatings are composed of three components: a dense self-assembled monolayer (SAM) underlayer that presents reactive vinyl groups at its surface; a cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) overlayer that is covalently tethered to the SAM; and free, mobile linear PDMS chains dispersed in the network. We investigate the influence of the molecular weight (Ms) and concentration of the free PDMS chains on the structure and equilibrium swelling properties of the cross-linked films. Using a bead-probe lateral force microscopy measurement technique, we also quantify the interfacial friction and adhesion characteristics of surfaces functionalized with these coatings. We find that both the volume fraction and the molecular weight of free PDMS molecules in the coatings influence their interfacial friction and adhesion properties. For example, the addition of short PDMS chains in dry, cross-linked PDMS thin films yields tethered surface coatings with ultralow friction coefficients (mu = 5.2 x 10(-3)). An analysis based on classical lubrication theory suggests that the reduction in friction force produced by free polymer is a consequence of the gradual separation of asperities on opposing surfaces and the consequent substitution of solid-solid friction by viscous drag of the free polymer chains in the network.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been applied to study the molecular surface structures of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends and the copolymer between PS and PMMA (PS-co-PMMA) in air, supplemented by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle goniometer. Both the blend and the copolymer have equal weight amounts of the two components. SFG results show that both components, PS and PMMA, can segregate to the surface of the blend and the copolymer before annealing, although PMMA has a slightly higher surface tension. Upon annealing both SFG results and contact angle measurements indicate that the PS segregates to the surface of the PS/PMMA blend more but no change occurs on the PS-co-PMMA surface. AFM images show that the copolymer surface is flat but the 1:1 PS/PMMA blend has a rougher surface with island like domains present. The annealing effect on the blend surface morphology has also been investigated. We collected amide SFG signals from interfacial fibrinogen molecules at the copolymer or blend/protein solution interfaces as a function of time. Different time-dependent SFG signal changes have been observed, showing that different surfaces of the blend and the copolymer mediate fibrinogen adsorption behavior differently.  相似文献

Adhesive and marine biofouling release properties of coatings containing surface-oriented perfluoroalkyl groups were investigated. These coatings were prepared by cross-linking a copolymer of 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate and acrylic acid with a copolymer of poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) and methyl methacrylate at different molar ratios. The relationships between contact angle, contact angle hysteresis, adhesion, and marine biofouling were studied. Adhesion was determined by peel tests using pressure-sensitive adhesives. The chemical nature of the surfaces was studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Resistance to marine biofouling of an optimized coating was studied by immersion in seawater and compared to previous, less optimized coatings. The adhesive release properties of the coatings did not correlate well with the surface energies of the coatings estimated from the static and advancing contact angles nor with the amount of fluorine present on the surface. The adhesive properties of the surfaces, however, show a correlation with water receding contact angles and contact angle hysteresis (or wetting hysteresis) resulting from surface penetration and surface reconstruction. Coatings having the best release properties had both the highest cross-link density and the lowest contact angle hysteresis. An optimized coating exhibited unprecedented resistance to marine biofouling. Water contact angle hysteresis appears to correlate with marine biofouling resistance.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was used to study the effect of silane headgroups on the molecular interactions that occur between poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and various epoxy silanes at the PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Three different silanes were investigated: (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (γ-GPS), (3-glycidoxypropyl) methyl-dimethoxysilane (γ-GPMS), and (3-glycidoxypropyl) dimethyl-methoxysilane (γ-GPDMS). These silanes share the same backbone and epoxy end group but have different headgroups. SFG was used to examine the interfaces between PET and each of these silanes, as well as silanes mixed with methylvinylsiloxanol (MVS). We also examined the interfaces between PET and uncured or cured silicone with silanes or silane-MVS mixtures. Silanes with different headgroups were found to exhibit a variety of methoxy group interfacial segregation and ordering behaviors at various interfaces. The effect of MVS was also dependent upon silane headgroup choice, and the interfacial molecular structures of silane methoxy headgroups were found to differ at PET/silane and PET/silicone interfaces. Epoxy silanes have been widely used as adhesion promoters for polymer adhesives; therefore, the molecular structures probed using SFG were correlated to adhesion testing results to understand the molecular mechanisms of silicone-polymer adhesion. Our results demonstrated that silane methoxy headgroups play important roles in adhesion at the PET/silicone interfaces. The presence of MVS can change interfacial methoxy segregation and ordering, leading to different adhesion strengths.  相似文献

Four novel proteasome inhibitors, TMC-95A-D (1-4) have been isolated from the fermentation broth of Apiospora montagnei Sacc. TC 1093, isolated from a soil sample. All of the molecular formulas of 1-4 were established as C(33)H(38)N(6)O(10) by high-resolution FAB-MS. Their planar structures were determined on the basis of extensive analyses of 1D and 2D NMR, and degradation studies. Compounds 1-4 have the same planar structures to each other, and are unique highly modified cyclic peptides containing L-tyrosine, L-aspargine, highly oxidized L-tryptophan, (Z)-1-propenylamine, and 3-methyl-2-oxopentanoic acid units. The absolute configuration at C-11 and C-36 of 1-4 was determined based on chiral TLC and HPLC analyses of their chemical degradation products. The ROESY analysis along with (1)H-(1)H coupling constants clarified the absolute stereochemistry at C-6, -7, -8, and -14 of the cyclic moieties. These studies revealed the relationships of 1-4 to be diastereomers at C-7 and C-36.

Well-defined poly(MMA-b-DMS-b-MMA) triblock copolymers were prepared by copper(I) mediated living radical polymerization. This was achieved by polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) with different concentrations of 2-bromoisobutyrate terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The polymerization occurred in controlled manner with the molecular weight found by 1H NMR close to that predicted and a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn∼1.2). Copolymers were obtained with Mn=2100, 4900, 10 100 and 29 500 g mol−1 respectively with poly(MMA) (PMMA) terminal blocks and a central PDMS block of 5500 g mol−1 in each case.DSC analysis showed most of the poly(MMA-b-DMS-b-MMA) triblock copolymers exhibits two Tg’s, one at low temperature corresponding to the Tg of PDMS microphase and a second at high temperature corresponding to the Tg of the PMMA microphase. TEM images show microphase segregation morphology in bulk for the triblock copolymers, with a higher degree of segregation for copolymers containing higher PDMS content. XPS measurements were performed to determine the chemical composition at the surface. For all the copolymers PDMS enrichment is observed at the surface. Copolymers containing higher percentage of PDMS exhibit higher phase separation and better enrichment of PDMS at the surface. The surface tension determined by contact angle measurements of the copolymer film containing 59 mol% of PDMS was 19.15 mN m−1.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of surface immobilization on the bactericidal function of a quaternary ammonium compound. Quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) coated planar surfaces did not produce any measurable mortality of Staphylococcus aureus, while 1 µm QAS‐coated microparticles did produce S. aureus mortality. The experiments using QAS‐coated microparticles indicate that the ability of QAS molecules to disrupt the cell wall is not hindered by covalent immobilization of QAS to a surface. These results provide evidence that S. aureus cells on a QAS‐coated planar surface are not exposed to a sufficient number of QAS molecules to produce significant mortality. This result has important implications for the development of self‐decontaminating coatings. Covalent immobilization is used to prevent leaching of the bactericidal compound. However, covalent immobilization may result in a significant tradeoff in bactericidal performance. Published in 2007 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Molecular level studies of the structure and mechanical properties of polymer surfaces have been carried out by sum frequency generation (SFG) surface vibrational spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surfaces of different grades of polyethylene and polypropylene have been characterized-including during the glass transition and when mechanically stretched. Copolymers that have hard and soft segments with different glass transition temperatures show phase separation, an effect of hydrogen bonding between the hard and soft segments, that influences their adhesive and friction properties. AFM and SFG show that low surface energy additives migrate to the surface and alter the surface mechanical properties. Polymers, where the chemical nature of the end groups is different from the backbone, show surface segregation of the hydrophobic part of the chain in air and the hydrophilic part in water. Likewise, in miscible polymer blends, surface segregation of the more hydrophobic component in air and the more hydrophilic component in water is observed. This area of surface science requires increased attention because of the predominance of polymers as structural materials and as biomaterials.  相似文献

Surface modifications of microfluidic devices are of essential importance for successful bioanalytical applications. Here, we investigate three different coatings for quartz and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces. We employed a triblock copolymer with trade name F108, poly(l-lysine)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLL-PEG), as well as the hybrid coating n-dodecyl-β-d-maltoside and methyl cellulose (DDM/MC). The impact of these coatings was characterized by measuring the electroosmotic flow (EOF), contact angle, and prevention of protein adsorption. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of static coatings, i.e., the incubation with the coating agent prior to measurements, and dynamic coatings, where the coating agent was present during the measurement. We found that all coatings on PDMS as well as quartz reduced EOF, increased reproducibility of EOF, reduced protein adsorption, and improved the wettability of the surfaces. Among the coating strategies tested, the dynamic coatings with DDM/MC and F108 demonstrated maximal reduction of EOF and protein adsorption and simultaneously best long-term stability concerning EOF. For PLL-PEG, a reversal in the EOF direction was observed. Interestingly, the static surface coating strategy with F108 proved to be as effective to prevent protein adsorption as dynamic coating with this block copolymer. These findings will allow optimized parameter choices for coating strategies on PDMS and quartz microfluidic devices in which control of EOF and reduced biofouling are indispensable.  相似文献

In numerous applications in microfluidics, cell growth, soft lithography, and molecular imprinting, the surface of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is modified from a hydrophobic methyl-terminated surface to a hydrophilic hydroxyl-terminated surface. In this study, we investigated molecular structural and orientational changes at the PDMS-air interface in response to three commonly used surface modification processes: exposure to long-wavelength ultraviolet light (UV), exposure to short-wavelength UV that generates ozone (UVO), and exposure to oxygen plasma (OP). The surfaces of two PDMS compositions (10:1 and 4:1 of base polymer/curing agent) were probed during modification, using monolayer-sensitive IR + visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy, with two different polarization combinations. During PDMS surface modification, the peak intensities of CH3 side groups and CH2 cross-link groups decreased, while peak intensities of Si-OH groups increased. There was no significant change in the average orientation of the CH3 groups on the PDMS surface during modification. The concentration of CH3 groups on the surface decreased exponentially with time, for all three UV, UVO, and OP modification processes, with first order kinetics and time constants of approximately 160, 66, and 0.3 min, respectively. At steady state, residual CH3 groups were detected at the PDMS surface for UV and UVO treatments; however, there were negligible CH3 groups detected after OP modification.  相似文献

Organic-inorganic hybrid coatings containing quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) bonded to the organic-inorganic network were prepared from tetraethoxysilane and triethoxysilane terminated poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene) using a sol-gel process. They were applied as a thin layer (0.6-1 μm) to PE films and the antibacterial activity of the coated films was tested against both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538) bacteria. Measurements at different contact times showed a rapid decrease of the viable count for both the tested strains. In particular, after 48 h of contact, a decrease of 96.4% and 99.1% of E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, was observed. The permanence of the antibacterial activity of the coated films was demonstrated through repeated washings and prolonged immersion in physiological saline solutions at 37 °C. Indeed, due to the removal of QAS moieties by the nucleophilic attack of water, the antibacterial activity after 24 h was strongly reduced when measured on samples submitted to several washings. However, a quite good antibacterial activity was observed even on the same samples after 96 h, probably due to a spontaneous partial restoring of the QAS on the surface. Very good transparency, quite good adhesion and high wettability are further features of these hybrid coatings.  相似文献

We blended Pluronic F127 into polyethersulfone (PES) to improve surface properties of PES, which has been extensively used in biomaterial and other applications. The molecular surface structures of PES/Pluronic F127 blends have been investigated by sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The molecular orientation of surface functional groups of PES changed significantly when blended with a small amount of Pluornic F127. Pluronic F127 on the blend surface also exhibited different features upon contacting with water. The entanglement of PES chains with Pluronic F127 molecules rendered the blends with long-term surface stability in water in contrast to the situation where a layer of Pluronic F127 adsorbed on the PES surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements were included to determine the relative amount of protein that adsorbed to the blend surfaces. The results showed a decreased protein adsorption amount with increasing Pluronic F127 bulk concentration. The correlations between polymer surface properties and detailed molecular structures obtained by SFG would provide insight into the designing and developing of biomedical polymers and functional membranes with improved fouling-resistant properties.  相似文献
