The mathematical background for a graded extension of gauge theories is investigated. After discussing the general properties of graded Lie algebras and what may serve as a model for a graded Lie group, the graded fiber bundle is constructed. Its basis manifold is supposed to be the so-called superspace, i.e. the product of the Minkowskian space-time with the Grassmann algebra spanned by the anticommuting Lorentz spinors; the vertical subspaces tangent to the fibers are isomorphic with the graded extension of the SU(N) Lie algebra. The connection and curvature are defined then on this bundle; the two different gradings are either independent of each other, or may be unified in one common grading, which is equivalent to the choice of the spin-statistics dependence. The Yang-Mills lagrangian is investigated in the simplified case. The conformal symmetry breaking is discussed, as well as some other physical consequences of the model.

A connection between the Einstein and Yang-Mills equations
It is our purpose here to show an unusual relationship between the Einstein equations and the Yang-Mills equations. We give a correspondence between solutions of the self-dual Einstein vacuum equations and the self-dual Yang-Mills equations with a special choice of gauge group. The extension of the argument to the full Yang-Mills equations yields Einstein's unifield equations. We try to incorporate the full Einstein vacuum equations, but the approach is incomplete. We first consider Yang-Mills theory for an arbitrary Lie-algebra with the condition that the connection 1-form and curvature are constant on Minkowski space. This leads to a set of algebraic equations on the connection components. We then specialize the Lie-algebra to be the (infinite dimensional) Lie-algebra of a group of diffeomorphisms of some manifold. The algebraic equations then become differential equations for four vector fields on the manifold on which the diffeomorphisms act. In the self-dual case, if we choose the connection components from the Lie-algebra of the volume preserving 4-dimensional diffeomorphism group, the resulting equations are the same as those obtained by Ashtekar, Jacobsen and Smolin, in their remarkable simplification of the self-dual Einstein vacuum equations. (An alternative derivation of the same equations begins with the self-dual Yang-Mills connection now depending only on the time, then choosing the Lie algebra as that of the volume preserving 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms.) When the reduced full Yang-Mills equations are used in the same context, we get Einstein's equations for his unified theory based on absolute parallelism. To incorporate the full Einsteinvacuum equations we use as the Lie group the semi-direct product of the diffeomorphism group of a 4-dimensional manifold with the group of frame rotations of anSO(1, 3) bundle over the 4-manifold. This last approach, however, yields equations more general than the vacuum equations.Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral fellow and Fulbright ScholarSupported in part by NSF grant no. PHY 80023  相似文献

The three fundamental geometric components of Yang-Mills theory –gauge field, gauge fixing and ghost field– are unified in a new object: an extended connection in a properly chosen principal fiber bundle. To do this, it is necessary to generalize the notion of gauge fixing by using a gauge fixing connection instead of a section. From the equations for the extended connection’s curvature, we derive the relevant BRST transformations without imposing the usual horizontality conditions. We show that the gauge field’s standard BRST transformation is only valid in a local trivialization and we obtain the corresponding global generalization. By using the Faddeev-Popov method, we apply the generalized gauge fixing to the path integral quantization of Yang-Mills theory. We show that the proposed gauge fixing can be used even in the presence of a Gribov’s obstruction.

A discussion is given of the gravitational anomalies that arise from coupling Weyl spinors to gravity, treating the metric, the soldering form, and the connection as independent dynamical variables. This system is strictly analogous to Weyl spinors coupled to Yang-Mills fields and a nonlinear sigma model. The larger gauge group of this formulation is seen to lie at the root of the equivalence between Einstein and Lorentz anomalies. On leave of absence from SISSA, Trieste, Italy.

In this review paper, we discuss how gravity and spin can be obtained as the realization of the local Conformal-Affine group of symmetry transformations. In particular, we show how gravitation is a gauge theory which can be obtained starting from some local invariance as the Poincaré local symmetry. We review previous results where the inhomogeneous connection coefficients, transforming under the Lorentz group, give rise to gravitational gauge potentials which can be used to define covariant derivatives accommodating minimal couplings of matter, gauge fields (and then spin connections). After we show, in a self-contained approach, how the tetrads and the Lorentz group can be used to induce the spacetime metric and then the Invariance Induced Gravity can be directly obtained both in holonomic and anholonomic pictures. Besides, we show how tensor valued connection forms act as auxiliary dynamical fields associated with the dilation, special conformal and deformation (shear) degrees of freedom, inherent to the bundle manifold. As a result, this allows to determine the bundle curvature of the theory and then to construct boundary topological invariants which give rise to a prototype (source free) gravitational Lagrangian. Finally, the Bianchi identities, the covariant field equations and the gauge currents are obtained determining completely the dynamics.

We point out that a Clifford algebra representation for the Riemannian curvature leads to an equation for gravity similar to the Yang-Mills equation, in a gauge model for gravity with the Lorentz group. Einstein's equation of general relativity emerges as a natural solution in this approach.

A direct method is employed to minimize the Yang-Mills functional over a 4-dimensional manifold. The limiting connection is shown to be Yang-Mills, but in a possibly new bundle. We show that a topological invariant of the bundle is preserved by the minimizing process. This implies the existence of an absolute minimum of the Yang-Mills functional in a wide class of bundles.

We show that we can unify the gravitational and internal gauge interactions in a high dimensional Riemann-Cartan spacetime in the spirit of Kaluza-Klein, if we identify some of the connection coefficients as Yang-Mills potentials and if the dynamics of the spacetime is governed by the Poincaré gauge theory of gravitation whose lagrangian contains curvature and torsion squared.

The 10-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is constructed in the light-cone gauge. When the theory is dimensionally reduced to four dimensions it is shown that the corresponding N = 4 theory is conveniently described in terms of a scalar superfield. This formalism avoids the problem of auxiliary fields but is Lorentz invariant only on the mass shell. Similar formalisms in terms of scalar superfields are also sketched for the other supersymmetric Yang-Mills as well as for N = 8 supergravity.

A general framework for the gauge theory of the affine group and its various subgroups in terms of connections on the bundle of affine frames and its subbundles is given, with emphasis on the correct gauging of groups including space-time translations. For consistency of interpretation, the appropriate objects to be identified with gravitational vierbeins in such theories are not the translational gauge fields themselves, but their pull backs, via appropriate bundle homomorphisms, to the bundle of frames. This automatically solves the problems usually encountered in constructing a gauge theory of the conventional sort for groups containing translations. We give a consistent formulation of the Poincare gauge theory and also of the theory based on translational gauge invariance which, in the absence of matter fields with intrinsic spin, gives a local Lorentz invariant theory equivalent to Einstein gravity.

It is shown in the context of a pure Yang-Mills theory that the solution of the Slavnov-Taylor identities in a general axial gauge admits counter-terms which may or may not be Lorentz invariant. It follows from the background field method that these counter-terms must be gauge invariant. The Lorentz-non-invariant counter-terms appear already at the one-loop level and depend both on the gauge parameter α and the non-covariant vector nω.

We show how to calculate high-energy gauge meson exchange reactions in general, spontaneously broken Yang-Mills theories. We exploit a class of non-covariant gauges in which the scattering amplitudes take on a factorized form in leading order in ln s. Such factorization can only be consistent with Lorentz invariance if the amplitudes have a power law, or Regge behaviour. We evaluate the trajectory functions by a one-loop calculation and verify that the gauge mesons lie on the trajectories.

We solve the consistency conditions of the BRS symmetry in a general N = 1 sypersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with semi-simple gauge group. As a result we find uniquely the supersymmetric extension of the chiral anomaly. Its coefficient is calculated in one loop and does not, in general, vanish. This corrects our earlier statement on the absence of this anomaly.

A connection dynamic theory of gravity
A gauge theory of gravity with matter sources is investigated. In this theory the fundamental fields are the connections of a principal de Sitter fiber bundle, and the action is a quadratic form of the curvature as in the standard Yang-Mills theory, in which the Einstein-Hilbert action is included. The Hamiltonian formulation and the constraint analysis of it is given. The separation of the self-dual and anti self-dual parts of the connection and curvature is exhibited.

Working over a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, for each vector bundle with connection we construct a sequence of three differential operators which is a complex (termed a Yang-Mills detour complex) if and only if the connection satisfies the full Yang-Mills equations. A special case is a complex controlling the deformation theory of Yang-Mills connections. In the case of Riemannian signature the complex is elliptic. If the connection respects a metric on the bundle then the complex is formally self-adjoint. In dimension 4 the complex is conformally invariant and generalises, to the full Yang-Mills setting, the composition of (two operator) Yang-Mills complexes for (anti-)self-dual Yang-Mills connections. Via a prolonged system and tractor connection a diagram of differential operators is constructed which, when commutative, generates differential complexes of natural operators from the Yang-Mills detour complex. In dimension 4 this construction is conformally invariant and is used to yield two new sequences of conformal operators which are complexes if and only if the Bach tensor vanishes everywhere. In Riemannian signature these complexes are elliptic. In one case the first operator is the twistor operator and in the other sequence it is the operator for Einstein scales. The sequences are detour sequences associated to certain Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences.

We present results on the Cauchy problem for coupled classical Yang-Mills and scalar fields in n + 1 dimensional space-time both in the temporal and in the Lorentz gauge. We prove the existence of local solutions for any n, and the existence of global solutions for n = 1, 2 in the temporal gauge and for n = 1 in the Lorentz gauge. The last result also holds for massive Yang-Mill fields.
