Many models for customers impatience in queueing systems have been studied in the past; the source of impatience has always been taken to be either a long wait already experienced at a queue, or a long wait anticipated by a customer upon arrival. In this paper we consider systems with servers vacations where customers’ impatience is due to an absentee of servers upon arrival. Such a model, representing frequent behavior by waiting customers in service systems, has never been treated before in the literature. We present a comprehensive analysis of the single-server, M/M/1 and M/G/1 queues, as well as of the multi-server M/M/c queue, for both the multiple and the single-vacation cases, and obtain various closed-form results. In particular, we show that the proportion of customer abandonments under the single-vacation regime is smaller than that under the multiple-vacation discipline. The paper studies the first homology of finite regular branched coverings of a universal Borromean orbifold called B 4,4,43. We investigate the irreducible components of the first homology as a representation space of the finite covering transformation group G. This gives information on the first betti number of finite coverings of general 3-manifolds by the universality of B 4,4,4. The main result of the paper is a criterion in terms of the irreducible character whether a given irreducible representation of G is an irreducible component of the first homology when G admits certain symmetries. As a special case of the motivating argument the criterion is applied to principal congruence subgroups of B 4,4,4. The group theoretic computation shows that most of the, possibly nonprincipal, congruence subgroups are of positive first Betti number. Let F be a Riemannian foliation on a Riemannian manifold (M, g), with bundle-like metric g. Aside from the Laplacian △g associated to the metric g, there is another differential operator, the Jacobi operator J▽, which is a second order elliptic operator acting on sections of the normal bundle. Its spectrum is discrete as a consequence of the compactness of M. Hence one has two spectra, spec (M, g) = spectrum of △g (acting on functions), and spec (F, J▽) = spectrum of J▽. We discuss the following problem: Which geometric properties of a Riemannian foliation F on a Riemannian manifold (M, g) are determined by the two types of spectral invariants?  相似文献

We analyze a Processor-Sharing queue with Batch arrivals. Our analysis is based on the integral equation derived by Kleinrock, Muntz and Rodemich. Using the contraction mapping principle, we demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the integral equation. Then we provide asymptotical analysis as well as tight bounds for the expected response time conditioned on the service time. In particular, the asymptotics for large service times depends only on the first moment of the service time distribution and on the first two moments of the batch size distribution. That is, similarly to the Processor-Sharing queue with single arrivals, in the Processor-Sharing queue with batch arrivals the expected conditional response time is finite even when the service time distribution has infinite second moment. Results on characterization of manifolds in terms of certain Lie algebras growing on them, especially Lie algebras of differential operators, are reviewed and extended. In particular, we prove that a smooth (real-analytic, Stein) manifold is characterized by the corresponding Lie algebra of linear differential operators, i.e. isomorphisms of such Lie algebras are induced by the appropriate class of diffeomorphisms of the underlying manifolds. Results of single transverse compression testing of PPTA and PIPD fibers, using a novel test device, are presented and discussed. In the tests, short lengths of single fibers are compressed between two parallel, stiff platens. The fiber elastic deformation is analyzed as a Hertzian contact problem. The inelastic deformation is analyzed by elastic-plastic FE simulation and by laser-scanning confocal microscopy of the compressed fibers ex post facto. Hermann and Thurston proved that the group of diffeomorphisms with compact support of a smooth manifold M which are isotopic to the identity is a perfect group. We consider the case where M has a geometric structure. In this paper we shall survey on the recent results of the first homology of the diffeomorphism groups which preserve a smooth G-action or a foliated structure on M. Problems of existence and nonexistence of global nontrivial solutions to quasilinear evolution differential inequalities in a product of cones are investigated. The proofs of the nonexistence results are based on the test-function method developed, for the case of the whole space, by Mitidieri, Pohozaev, Tesei and Véron. The intuition while observing the economy of queueing systems, is that one’s motivation to join the system, decreases with its level of congestion. Here we present a queueing model where sometimes the opposite is the case. The point of departure is the standard first-come first-served single server queue with Poisson arrivals. Customers commence service immediately if upon their arrival the server is idle. Otherwise, they are informed if the queue is empty or not. Then, they have to decide whether to join or not. We assume that the customers are homogeneous and when they consider whether to join or not, they assess their queueing costs against their reward due to service completion. As the whereabouts of customers interact, we look for the (possibly mixed) join/do not join Nash equilibrium strategy, a strategy that if adopted by all, then under the resulting steady-state conditions, no one has any incentive not to follow it oneself. We show that when the queue is empty then depending on the service distribution, both ‘avoid the crowd’ (ATC) and ‘follow the crowd’ (FTC) scenarios (as well as none-of-the-above) are possible. When the queue is not empty, the situation is always that of ATC. Also, we show that under Nash equilibrium it is possible (depending on the service distribution) that the joining probability when the queue is empty is smaller than it is when the queue is not empty. The influence of displacements of tensioned fibers on the impregnation of fibrous layers with a polymer melt and on the final composite structure is studied. Using computer simulation, it is shown that, during impregnation, the structure of tensioned fibrous layers changes considerably depending on the initial arrangement and tensioning of fibers. The consolidated regions formed under the melt front move inside the impregnated layer with the advancing melt front. Displacement of the tensioned fibers as well as the formation of “washouts” favors the impregnation of internal layers, but cause significant inhomogeneity of the polymer structure. The surface (on the side of the melt flow) regions are more saturated with the polymer than the internal ones. A difference in the melt percolation mechanisms at various impregnation regimes is revealed. The effective permeability coefficients of a tensioned fiber layer are not constant but depend on the conditions and regimes of impregnation. We express the compatibility conditions that a Poisson bivector and a Nijenhuis tensor must fulfil in order to be a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure by means of a graded Lie bracket. A one-parameter familyg(t) (0 t T) of Riemannian metric on a compact manifold is called an isospectral deformation of a metricg(0) if the Laplace-Beltrami operators associated to the metricsg(t) have the same spectra. Examples of non-trivial isospectral deformations were constructed on solvmanifolds for the first time by C.S. Gordon and E. Wilson on the basis of Kirillov theory. This paper considers the isospectral deformations on nilmanifolds from the dynamical point of view. First, we see for certain isospectral deformations that the associated Hamiltonian systems of geodesic flows are decomposed into a collection of reduced systems which are left invariant as Hamiltonian systems under the deformations. This fact is formulated by the classical Lax equations. Next, by using a quantization procedure, we attempt to obtain Lax equations for the reduced Laplacians from the classical Lax equations. As a result, we show that certain isospectral deformations by Gordon-Wilson are represented by the Lax equations.  相似文献

Proofs are given of two theorems of Berezin and Karpelevič, which as far as we know never have been proved correctly. By using eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator it is shown that the spherical functions on a complex Grassmann manifold are given by a determinant of certain hypergeometric functions. By application of this result, it is proved that a certain system of operators, fow which explicit expressions are given, generates the algebra of radial parts of invariant differential operators.  相似文献

This paper is aimed at studying negatively curved Riemannian manifolds acted on by a Lie group of isometries with principal orbits of codimension one. The orbit space of such a manifold M is proved to be always homeomorphic to or + and this second case may occur only when either the singular orbit is a geodesic of M or when the space is simply connected. We calculate the wave kernels for the classical rank-one symmetric spaces. The result is employed in order to provide a meromorphic extension of the theta function of an even-dimensional compact locally symmetric space of non-compact type. Moreover we give a short derivation of the Selberg trace formula. We discuss the relation between the right hand side of the functional equation of the Selberg zeta function, the Plancherel measure, Weyl's dimension formula and the wave kernel on the non-compact symmetric space and on its compact dual in an explicit manner.The first two authors were supported by the Sonderforschungsbereich 288 Differentialgeometrie und Quantenphysik founded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.  相似文献

The strong global dimension of a finite dimensional algebra A is the maximum of the width of indecomposable bounded differential complexes of finite dimensional projective A-modules. We prove that the strong global dimension of a finite dimensional radical square zero algebra A over an algebraically closed field is finite if and only if A is piecewise hereditary. Moreover, we discuss results concerning the finiteness of the strong global dimension of algebras and the related problem on the density of the push-down functors associated to the canonical Galois coverings of the trivial extensions of algebras by their repetitive algebras.  相似文献
