Variable space search for graph coloring   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let G=(V,E) be a graph with vertex set V and edge set E. The k-coloring problem is to assign a color (a number chosen in {1,…,k}) to each vertex of G so that no edge has both endpoints with the same color. We propose a new local search methodology, called Variable Space Search, which we apply to the k-coloring problem. The main idea is to consider several search spaces, with various neighborhoods and objective functions, and to move from one to another when the search is blocked at a local optimum in a given search space. The k-coloring problem is thus solved by combining different formulations of the problem which are not equivalent, in the sense that some constraints are possibly relaxed in one search space and always satisfied in another. We show that the proposed algorithm improves on every local search used independently (i.e., with a unique search space), and is competitive with the currently best coloring methods, which are complex hybrid evolutionary algorithms.  相似文献

A (proper) k-coloring of a graph G is a partition Π={V1,V2,…,Vk} of V(G) into k independent sets, called color classes. In a k-coloring Π, a vertex vVi is called a Grundy vertex if v is adjacent to at least one vertex in color class Vj, for every j, j<i. A k-coloring is called a Grundy coloring if every vertex is a Grundy vertex. A k-coloring is called a partial Grundy coloring if every color class contains at least one Grundy vertex. In this paper we introduce partial Grundy colorings, and relate them to parsimonious proper colorings introduced by Simmons in 1982.  相似文献

The chain graph sandwich problem asks: Given a vertex set V, a mandatory edge set E 1, and a larger edge set E 2, is there a graph G=(V,E) such that E 1?E?E 2 with G being a chain graph (i.e., a 2K 2-free bipartite graph)? We prove that the chain graph sandwich problem is NP-complete. This result stands in contrast to (1) the case where E 1 is a connected graph, which has a linear-time solution, (2) the threshold graph sandwich problem, which has a linear-time solution, and (3) the chain probe graph problem, which has a polynomial-time solution.  相似文献

A vertex u in an undirected graph G = (V, E) is said to dominate all its adjacent vertices and itself. A subset D of V is a dominating set in G if every vertex in G is dominated by a vertex in D, and is a minimum dominating set in G if no other dominating set in G has fewer vertices than D. The domination number of G is the cardinality of a minimum dominating set in G.The problem of determining, for a given positive integer k and an undirected graph G, whether G has a dominating set D in G satisfying ¦D¦ ≤ k, is a well-known NP-complete problem. Cockayne have presented a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a tree. In this paper, we will present a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a series-parallel graph.  相似文献

Let G =  (V, E) be a graph with vertex set V and edge set E. Given non negative integers r, s and t, an [r, s, t]-coloring of a graph G is a proper total coloring where the neighboring elements of G (vertices and edges) receive colors with a certain difference r between colors of adjacent vertices, a difference s between colors of adjacent edges and a difference t between colors of a vertex and an incident edge. Thus [r, s, t]-colorings generalize the classical colorings of graphs and can have applications in different fields like scheduling, channel assignment problem, etc. The [r, s, t]-chromatic number χ r,s,t (G) of G is the minimum k such that G admits an [r, s, t]-coloring. In our paper we propose several bounds for the [r, s, t]-chromatic number of the cartesian and direct products of some graphs.  相似文献

Concise proofs for adjacent vertex-distinguishing total colorings   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Let G=(V,E) be a graph and f:(VE)→[k] be a proper total k-coloring of G. We say that f is an adjacent vertex- distinguishing total coloring if for any two adjacent vertices, the set of colors appearing on the vertex and incident edges are different. We call the smallest k for which such a coloring of G exists the adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number, and denote it by χat(G). Here we provide short proofs for an upper bound on the adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number of graphs of maximum degree three, and the exact values of χat(G) when G is a complete graph or a cycle.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with vertex set V={1,??,n} and edge set E?V×V. Let w:V??Z + be a weighting function that assigns to each vertex i??V a positive integer. The maximum weight clique problem (MWCP) is to determine a clique of maximum weight. This paper introduces a tabu search heuristic whose key features include a combined neighborhood and a dedicated tabu mechanism using a randomized restart strategy for diversification. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on a total of 136 benchmark instances from different sources (DIMACS, BHOSLIB and set packing). Computational results disclose that our new tabu search algorithm outperforms the leading algorithm for the maximum weight clique problem, and in addition rivals the performance of the best methods for the unweighted version of the problem without being specialized to exploit this problem class.  相似文献

The competition graph of a digraph D is a (simple undirected) graph which has the same vertex set as D and has an edge between two distinct vertices x and y if and only if there exists a vertex v in D such that (x, v) and (y, v) are arcs of D. For any graph G, G together with sufficiently many isolated vertices is the competition graph of some acyclic digraph. The competition number k(G) of a graph G is the smallest number of such isolated vertices. Computing the competition number of a graph is an NP-hard problem in general and has been one of the important research problems in the study of competition graphs. Opsut [1982] showed that the competition number of a graph G is related to the edge clique cover number θ E (G) of the graph G via θ E (G) ? |V(G)| + 2 ≤ k(G) ≤ θ E (G). We first show that for any positive integer m satisfying 2 ≤ m ≤ |V(G)|, there exists a graph G with k(G) = θ E (G) ? |V(G)| + m and characterize a graph G satisfying k(G) = θ E (G). We then focus on what we call competitively tight graphs G which satisfy the lower bound, i.e., k(G) = θ E (G) ? |V(G)| + 2. We completely characterize the competitively tight graphs having at most two triangles. In addition, we provide a new upper bound for the competition number of a graph from which we derive a sufficient condition and a necessary condition for a graph to be competitively tight.  相似文献

A total k-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of V(G) ∪ E(G) using k colors such that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The total chromatic number χ'(G) is the smallest integer k such that G has a total k-coloring. It is known that if a planar graph G has maximum degree Δ≥ 9, then χ'(G) = Δ + 1. In this paper, we prove that if G is a planar graph with maximum degree 8 and without a fan of four adjacent 3-cycles, then χ'(G) = 9.  相似文献

While a finite, bipartite graph G can be k-graceful for every k ≥ 1, a finite nonbipartite G can be k-graceful for only finitely many values of k. An improved bound on such possible values of k is presented. Definitions are extended to infinite graphs, and it is shown that if G is locally finite and vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G) are countably infinite, then for each k ≥ 1 the graph G has a k-graceful numbering h mapping V(G) onto the set of nonnegative integers.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a k-regular graph with connectivity κ and edge connectivity λ. G is maximum connected if κ=k, and G is maximum edge connected if λ=k. Moreover, G is super-connected if it is a complete graph, or it is maximum connected and every minimum vertex cut is {x|(v,x)E} for some vertex vV; and G is super-edge-connected if it is maximum edge connected and every minimum edge disconnecting set is {(v,x)|(v,x)E} for some vertex vV. In this paper, we present three schemes for constructing graphs that are super-connected and super-edge-connected. Applying these construction schemes, we can easily discuss the super-connected property and the super-edge-connected property of hypercubes, twisted cubes, crossed cubes, möbius cubes, split-stars, and recursive circulant graphs.  相似文献

A set of planar graphs {G1(V,E1),…,Gk(V,Ek)} admits a simultaneous embedding if they can be drawn on the same pointset P of order n in the Euclidean plane such that each point in P corresponds one-to-one to a vertex in V and each edge in Ei does not cross any other edge in Ei (except at endpoints) for i∈{1,…,k}. A fixed edge is an edge (u,v) that is drawn using the same simple curve for each graph Gi whose edge set Ei contains the edge (u,v). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for two graphs whose union is homeomorphic to K5 or K3,3 to admit a simultaneous embedding with fixed edges (SEFE). This allows us to characterize the class of planar graphs that always have a SEFE with any other planar graph. We also characterize the class of biconnected outerplanar graphs that always have a SEFE with any other outerplanar graph. In both cases, we provide O(n4)-time algorithms to compute a SEFE.  相似文献

A total k-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of V(G) ∪ E(G) using k colors such that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The total chromatic number χ〃(G) is the smallest integer k such that G has a total k-coloring.In this paper,it is proved that the total chromatic number of any graph G embedded in a surface Σ of Euler characteristic χ(Σ)≥0 is Δ(G) + 1 if Δ(G)≥10,where Δ(G) denotes the maximum degree of G.  相似文献

A list-assignment L to the vertices of G is an assignment of a set L(v) of colors to vertex v for every vV(G). An (L,d)-coloring is a mapping ? that assigns a color ?(v)∈L(v) to each vertex vV(G) such that at most d neighbors of v receive color ?(v). A graph is called (k,d)-choosable, if G admits an (L,d)-coloring for every list assignment L with |L(v)|≥k for all vV(G). In this note, it is proved that every plane graph, which contains no 4-cycles and l-cycles for some l∈{8,9}, is (3,1)-choosable.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a (directed) graph with vertex set V and edge (arc) set E. Given a set P of source-sink pairs of vertices of G, an important problem that arises in the computation of network reliability is the enumeration of minimal subsets of edges (arcs) that connect/disconnect all/at least one of the given source-sink pairs of P. For undirected graphs, we show that the enumeration problems for conjunctions of paths and disjunctions of cuts can be solved in incremental polynomial time. Furthermore, under the assumption that P consists of all pairs within a given vertex set, we also give incremental polynomial time algorithm for enumerating all minimal path disjunctions and cut conjunctions. For directed graphs, the enumeration problem for cut disjunction is known to be NP-complete. We extend this result to path conjunctions and path disjunctions, leaving open the complexity of the enumeration of cut conjunctions. Finally, we give a polynomial delay algorithm for enumerating all minimal sets of arcs connecting two given nodes s1 and s2 to, respectively, a given vertex t1, and each vertex of a given subset of vertices T2.  相似文献

Given a graph G = (V, E), a set of vertices covers a vertex if the edge-connectivity between S and v is at least a given number k. Vertices in S are called sources. The maximum-cover source location problem, which is a variation of the source location problem, is to find a source set S with a given size at most p, maximizing the sum of the weight of vertices covered by S. In this paper, we show a polynomial-time algorithm for this problem in the case of k = 3 for a given undirected graph with a vertex weight function and an edge capacity function. Moreover, we show that this problem is NP-hard even if vertex weights and edge capacities are both uniform for general k.  相似文献

For a given graph G=(V,E), the interval completion problem of G is to find an edge set F such that the supergraph H=(V,EF) of G is an interval graph and |F| is minimum. It has been shown that it is equivalent to the minimum sum cut problem, the profile minimization problem and a kind of graph searching problems. Furthermore, it has applications in computational biology, archaeology, and clone fingerprinting. In this paper, we show that it is NP-complete on split graphs and propose an efficient algorithm on primitive starlike graphs.  相似文献

A homomorphism of a graph G1=(V1,E1) to a graph G2=(V2,E2) is a mapping from the vertex set V1 of G1 to the vertex set V2 of G2 which preserves edges. In this paper we provide an algorithm to determine the number of homomorphisms from an arbitrary finite undirected path to another arbitrary finite undirected path.  相似文献

For a chordal graph G=(V,E), we study the problem of whether a new vertex uV and a given set of edges between u and vertices in V can be added to G so that the resulting graph remains chordal. We show how to resolve this efficiently, and at the same time, if the answer is no, specify a maximal subset of the proposed edges that can be added along with u, or conversely, a minimal set of extra edges that can be added in addition to the given set, so that the resulting graph is chordal. In order to do this, we give a new characterization of chordal graphs and, for each potential new edge uv, a characterization of the set of edges incident to u that also must be added to G along with uv. We propose a data structure that can compute and add each such set in O(n) time. Based on these results, we present an algorithm that computes both a minimal triangulation and a maximal chordal subgraph of an arbitrary input graph in O(nm) time, using a totally new vertex incremental approach. In contrast to previous algorithms, our process is on-line in that each new vertex is added without reconsidering any choice made at previous steps, and without requiring any knowledge of the vertices that might be added subsequently.  相似文献

The problem of when a recursive graph has a recursive k-coloring has been extensively studied by Bean, Schmerl, Kierstead, Remmel, and others. In this paper, we study the polynomial time analogue of that problem. We develop a number of negative and positive results about colorings of polynomial time graphs. For example, we show that for any recursive graph G and for any k, there is a polynomial time graph G′ whose vertex set is {0,1}* such that there is an effective degree preserving correspondence between the set of k-colorings of G and the set of k-colorings of G′ and hence there are many examples of k-colorable polynomial time graphs with no recursive k-colorings. Moreover, even though every connected 2-colorable recursive graph is recursively 2-colorable, there are connected 2-colorable polynomial time graphs which have no primitive recursive 2-coloring. We also give some sufficient conditions which will guarantee that a polynomial time graph has a polynomial time or exponential time coloring.  相似文献
