Block copolymers with donor and acceptor conjugated polymer blocks provide an approach to dictating the donor–accepter interfacial structure and understanding its relationship to charge separation and photovoltaic performance. We report the preparation of a series of donor‐linker‐acceptor block copolymers with poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) donor blocks, poly((9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐[4,7‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole]‐2′,2″‐diyl) (PFTBT) acceptor blocks, and varying lengths of oligo‐ethylene glycol (OEG) chains as the linkers. Morphological analysis shows that the linkers increase polymer crystallinity while a combination of optical and photovoltaic measurements shows that the insertion of a flexible spacer reduces fluorescence quenching and photovoltaic efficiencies of solution processed photovoltaic devices. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the linking groups reduce both charge separation and recombination rates, and block copolymers with flexible linkers will likely rotate to assume a nonplanar orientation, resulting in a significant loss of overlap at the donor–linker–acceptor interface. This work provides a systematic study of the role of linker length on the photovoltaic performance of donor–linker–acceptor block copolymers and indicates that linkers should be designed to control both the electronic properties and relative orientations of conjugated polymers at the interface. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three donor–acceptor copolymers P1 , P2 , and P3 with N,N′‐dodecylpyromellitic diimide as the electron‐acceptor unit with three diethynyl‐substituted donor monomers: 1,4‐diethynyl‐2,5‐bis(octyloxy)benzene, 2,7‐diethynyl‐9,9‐dioctyl‐9H‐fluorene, and 3,3′‐didodecyl‐5,5′‐diethynyl‐2,2′‐bithiophene have been synthesized by Sonogashira crosscoupling polymerization. The synthesized polymers showed deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels and larger band gaps (>2.5 eV). Polymers P1 , P2 , and P3 underwent fluorescence quenching with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), indicating the intermolecular photo‐induced charge transfer between the donor polymers and the PCBM acceptor. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the presence of hexyl group in thiophene on the photophysical and electrochemical properties of poly[(9,9‐dioctyluorene)?2,7‐diyl‐alt‐(4,7‐bis(3‐hexylthien‐5‐yl)?2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole)?2′,2″‐diyl] (F8TBT) is investigated. The copolymers present electron donor–acceptor architecture and are synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction. The UV/Vis spectra show absorption maximum in the wavelength range of blue and orange, which are associated with different segments of the polymer backbone. Addition of hexyl substituent groups has a positive effect on the molar absorptivity and increases the emission and absorption intensities due to fluorene and thiophene‐benzothiadiazole‐thiophene (TBT) units, although an increment in the bandgap is observed. Cyclic voltammetry study of the polymer films reveal irreversible reduction and oxidation processes of the TBT units in the polymer chain and the HOMO and LUMO energy levels suggest ambipolar character for the polymers, while the electrochemical bandgaps are consistent with the absorbance measurements. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of one donor–two acceptor (D–A1)‐(D–A2) random terpolymers containing a 2,7‐carbazole donor and varying compositions of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptors was synthesized via Suzuki coupling polymerization. The optical properties of the terpolymers are weighted sums of the constituent parent copolymers and all show strong absorption over the 400 to 700 nm range with optical bandgaps ranging from 1.77 to 1.87 eV, depending on acceptor composition. The copolymers were tested as acceptor materials in bulk heterojunction all‐polymer solar cells using poly[(4,8‐bis‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy)‐benzo[1,2‐b;4,5‐b′]dithiophene)‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(4‐(2‐ethylhexanoyl)‐thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene)‐2,6‐diyl] (PBDTTT‐C) as the donor material. In contrast to the optoelectronic properties, the measured device parameters are not composition dependent, and rather depend solely on the presence of the NDI unit, where the devices containing any amount of NDI perform half as well as those using the parent polymer containing only carbazole and PDI. Overall this is the first example of a one donor–two acceptor random terpolymer system containing perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptor units, and demonstrates a facile method of tuning polymer optoelectronic properties while minimizing the need for complicated synthetic and purification steps. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three classes of quinoxaline (Qx)‐based donor–acceptor (D–A)‐type copolymers, poly[thiophene‐2,5‐diyl‐alt‐2,3‐bis(4‐(octyloxy)phenyl‐quinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl] P(T‐Qx), poly{4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐2,3‐bis(4‐(octyloxy)phenyl‐quinoxaline‐5,8‐diy} P(BDT‐Qx), and poly{4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(5′,8′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2,3‐bis(4‐octyloxyl)phenyl)‐quinoxaline‐5,5‐diyl} P(BDT‐DTQx), were synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The Qx unit was functionalized at the 2‐ and 3‐positions with 4‐(octyloxy)phenyl to provide good solubility and to reduce the steric hindrance. The absorption spectra of the Qx‐containing copolymers could be tuned by incorporating three different electron‐donating moieties. Among these, P(T‐Qx) acted as an electron donor and yielded a high‐performance solar cell by assuming a rigid planar structure, confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry, UV–vis spectrophotometer, and density functional theory study. In contrast, the P(BDT‐Qx)‐based solar cell displayed a lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) with a large torsional angle (34.7°) between the BDT and Qx units. The BDT unit in the P(BDT‐DTQx) backbone acted as a linker and interfered with the formation of charge complexes or quinoidal electronic conformations in a polymer chain. The PCEs of the polymer solar cells based on these copolymers, in combination with [6,6]‐phenyl C70 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), were 3.3% [P(T‐Qx)], 1.9% [P(BDT‐Qx)], and 2.3% [P(BDT‐DTQx)], respectively, under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm?2). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three donor–acceptor (D–A) 1,3‐di(thien‐2‐yl)thieno [3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione‐based copolymers, poly{9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione}, poly{N‐(1‐octylnonyl)carbazole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione}, and poly {4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxyl) benzo[1,2‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c] pyrrole‐4,6‐dione} were synthesized by Suzuki or Stille coupling reaction. By changing the donor segment, the bandgaps and energy levels of these copolymers could be finely tuned. Cyclic voltammetric study shows that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of the three copolymers are deep‐lying, which implies that these copolymers have good stability in the air and the relatively low HOMO energy level assures a higher open‐circuit potential when they are used in photovoltaic cells. Bulk‐heterojunction photovoltaic cells were fabricated with these polymers as the donors and PC71BM as the acceptor. The cells based on the three copolymers exhibited power conversion efficiencies of 0.22, 0.74, and 3.11% with large open‐circuit potential of 1.01, 0.99, and 0.90 V under one sun of AM 1.5 solar simulator illumination (100 mW/cm2). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of block copolymers with fixed length of the semiconductor‐block poly(3‐butylthiophene) (P3BT) and varying length of the insulator‐block polystyrene (PS) are synthesized. These copolymers are blended with phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) for the bulk heterojunction photoactive layers. With appropriate insulator‐block length and donor–acceptor ratio, the power conversion efficiency increases by one order of magnitude compared with reference devices with pure P3BT/PCBM. PS blocks improve the miscibility of the active layer blends remarkably. The P3BT‐b‐PS crystallizes as nanorods with the P3BT core covered with the PS‐block, which creates a nanoscale tunneling barrier between donor and acceptor leading to more efficient transportation of charge carriers in the semiconductors.  相似文献

The successful synthesis is described for a donor–acceptor rod–coil block copolymer comprising blocks of poly[2,7‐(9,9‐dihexylfluorene)‐alt‐bithiophene] (F6T2) and polystyrene functionalized with fullerene (PS(C60)) (F6T2‐b‐PS(C60)). This new material was obtained by combining Suzuki polycondensation with radical addition fragmentation chain transfer. The block copolymer was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and optical spectroscopy methods. Photophysical data for (F6T2‐b‐PS(C60)) and a related block copolymer (F6T2‐b‐PS(PCBM)) (PCBM, phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester) are reported and their performance as compatibilizers in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells is assessed. It is demonstrated that the addition of the rod–coil block copolymers to the active layer extends the operational stability of organic photovoltaic devices. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The selection of sensitizer and its existence in the blend films are important to the performance of all‐polymer ternary solar cells. Herein, all‐polymer ternary solar cell devices, which used poly[4,8‐bis(5‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′] dithiophene‐alt‐3‐fluorothieno[3,4‐b]thiophene‐2‐carboxy‐late] (PTB7‐Th) as donor, poly[[N,N‐bis(2‐octyldodecyl)‐napthalene‐1,4,5,8‐bis(dicarboximide)?2,6‐diyl]‐alt‐5, 5′‐(2,2′‐bithiophene)] (N2200) as acceptor and poly[N?900‐hepta‐decanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(40,70‐di‐2‐thienyl‐20,10,30‐benzothiadiazole) (PCDTBT) as sensitizer, are successfully demonstrated. The intermolecular interaction between donor PTB7‐Th and sensitizer PCDTBT may lead to aggregation of PTB7‐Th which decreases domain sizes and enlarges D/A effective interface area. In addition, the PCDTBT molecules also extend light absorption and cascaded energy levels of the ternary blend system. As a result, with 15% PCDTBT we get a power conversion efficiency of 5.11%, almost 20% higher than control device due to more favored exciton dissociation and higher charge transport efficiency. This study reveals a promising way to achieve high efficiency all‐polymer solar cells using a low‐band gap polymer PCDTBT. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. A series of poly[9‐(heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐(5,6‐bis‐(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo‐[1,2,5]‐thia‐diazole)‐5,5‐diyl] compositions containing various ratios of 3,6‐carbazole was synthesized for testing in a polymer solar cell. An appropriate amount of 3,6‐carbazole units incorporated into the copolymer improved intermolecular charge transport, whereas excess amount of 3,6‐carbazole units temporarily seized on the partial negative charge generated in the conjugation breaks. We extensively studied the effects of the incorporated 3,6‐carbazole units on the intermolecular interactions, which can affect nongeminated recombination in bulk heterojunction‐polymer solar cells. These properties were investigated using photocurrent‐ and light intensity‐dependent measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We demonstrate a fully conjugated donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) triblock copolymer, PBDTT–PNDIBT–PBDTT, which contains PBDTT as the donor block and PNDIBT as the acceptor block. The polymer was synthesized by end‐capping each block with a reactive unit, followed by condensation copolymerization between the two blocks. The physical, optical, and electrochemical properties of the polymer were investigated by comparing those of donor‐ and acceptor‐homopolymers (i.e., PBDTT and PNDIBT), which are the oligomeric monomers, and their blends. On using the newly synthesized block copolymer, ambipolar charge transport behavior was observed in the corresponding thin‐film transistor, and the behavior was compared to that of blend film of donor‐ and acceptor‐homopolymers. Owing to the presence of donor and acceptor blocks in a single polymer chain, it was found that the triblock copolymer can store two‐level information; the ability to store this information is one of the most intriguing challenges in memory applications. In this study, we confirmed the potential of the triblock copolymer in achieving distinct two‐stage data storage by utilizing the ambipolar charge trapping phenomenon, which is expected in donor and acceptor containing random and block copolymers in a thin‐film transistor. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel D–A1–D–A2 copolymer denoted as P1 containing two electron withdrawing units based on benzothiadiazole (BT) and 9‐(2‐octyldodecyl)?8H‐pyrrolo[3,4‐b] bisthieno[2,3‐f:3′,2′‐h]quinoxaline‐8,10(9H)–dione (PTQD) units was synthesized and characterized. The resulting copolymer exhibits a broad‐absorption spectrum, relatively deep lying HOMO energy level (?5.44 eV) and narrow optical bandgap (1.50 eV). Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on P1 as donor and PC71BM as acceptor with optimized donor to acceptor weight ratio of 1:2 and processed with DIO/CB solvent showed good photovoltaic performance with power conversion efficiency of 6.21% which is higher than that of the device processed without solvent additive (4.40%). The absorption and morphology investigations of the active layers indicated that structural and morphological changes were induced by the solvent additive. This higher power conversion efficiency could be mainly attributed to the absorption enhancement and improved charge transported in the active layer induced by the better nanoscale morphology of the active layer. This study demonstrated that a copolymer with two different acceptor moieties in the backbone may be promising candidate as donor copolymer for solution processed BHJ PSCs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A screening of direct arylation conditions on a model small molecule system is carried out to develop suitable conditions for the direct arylation polymerization (DArP) of fluorinated copolymers, which are incompatible with conditions previously utilized successfully for nonfluorinated systems. The model system features a coupling between a 2‐substituted thiophene and a pentafluorobenzene, where one of the partners was brominated. A substantial difference in reactivity is observed, demonstrating that the optimal functionalization for direct arylation between a thiophene‐based donor and a highly fluorinated acceptor is a halogenated thiophene and an unfunctionalized fluorinated unit, which is opposite of typical cross coupling reactions, where the acceptor is typically halogenated. The best conditions are applied to the copolymerization of 1,2,4,5‐tetrafluorobenzene and 2,2'‐(2,5‐bis((2‐hexyldecyl)oxy)?1,4‐phenylene)dithiophene. Polymers are free of β‐defects and significant homocoupling. This work further underscores the attractive simplicity, relevance, and ease of DArP while reconfirming its broad compatibility with increasingly popular fluorinated copolymers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have synthesized two cyclopentadithiophene (CDT)‐based low bandgap copolymers, poly[(4,4‐bis(2‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)‐alt‐(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole‐4,7‐diyl)] (PCBSe) and poly[(4,4‐bis(2‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)‐alt‐(4,7‐dithiophen‐2‐yl‐benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)] (PCT2BSe), for use in photovoltaic applications. Through the internal charge transfer interaction between the electron‐donating CDT unit and the electron‐accepting benzoselenadiazole, we realized exceedingly low bandgap polymers with bandgaps of 1.37–1.46 eV. The UV–vis absorption maxima of PCT2BSe were subjected to larger hypsochromic shifts than those of PCBSe, because of the distorted electron donor–acceptor (D–A) structures of the PCT2BSe backbone. These results were supported by the calculations of the D–A complex using the ab initio Hartree‐Fock method with a split‐valence 6‐31G* basis set. However, PCT2BSe exhibited a better molar absorption coefficient in the visible region, which can lead to more efficient absorption of sunlight. As a result, PCT2BSe blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) exhibited a better photovoltaic performance than PCBSe because of the larger spectral overlap integral with respect to the solar spectrum. Furthermore, when the polymers were blended with PC71BM, PCT2BSe showed the best performance, with an open circuit voltage of 0.55 V, a short‐circuit current of 6.63 mA/cm2, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.34% under air mass 1.5 global illumination conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of thiazolothiazole (Tz)‐based copolymers, poly[9,9‐didecylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P1), poly[9,9‐dioctyldibenzosilole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P2), and poly[4,4′‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]silole‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P3), were synthesized for the use as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers were investigated. The results suggest that the donor units in the copolymers significantly influenced the band gap, electronic energy levels, carrier mobilities, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers. The band gaps of the copolymers were in the range of 1.80–2.14 eV. Under optimized conditions, the Tz‐based polymers showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range of 2.23–2.75% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). Among the three copolymers, P1, which contained a fluorene donor unit, showed a PCE of 2.75% with a short‐circuit current of 8.12 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage of 0.86 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.39, under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new polymeric dyad of oligo‐anthracene‐block‐poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (Oligo‐ANT‐b‐P3HT) has been synthesized as a donor–donor dyad building block for organic photovoltaics. The polymer dyad and oligomer of anthracene‐9,10‐diyl (Oligo‐ANT) are prepared by Grignard Metathesis. The higher order of crystallinity and molecular chains ordering at solid phase reveal the intrinsic optical and electrical properties of polymeric dyad resulting in relatively higher light harvesting ability compared to the oligo(anthracene‐9,10‐diyl). The UV‐visible spectrum of (Oligo‐ANT‐b‐P3HT) in solution shows broad absorption with two sets of absorption from both anthracene and thiophene core units, covering a wide range of the visible spectrum. The test devices of the blends of polymeric dyad with fullerene C61 (PCBM) show improved photovoltaic performance with a power conversion efficiency of 3.26% upon subjecting to pre‐fabrication thermal treatments. With optimized morphology of the interpenetrating network and the shorter fluorescence lifetime of the annealed dyad/PCBM blends, the effective charge transfer from the donor dyad to PCBM has evidenced. Thus, these studies will allow further synthetic advances to make potential high crystalline polymeric dyads with significantly improved light harvesting capability. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A series of three new low bandgap donor–acceptor–donor–acceptor/ (D–A–D–A/) polymers have been successfully synthesized based on the combination of isoindigo as the electron‐deficient acceptor and 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene as the electron‐rich donor, followed by CH‐arylation with different acceptors (4,7‐dibromo[c][1,2,5]‐(oxa, thia, and/or selena)diazole ( 4a‐c )). These polymers were used as donor materials for photovoltaic applications. All of the polymers are highly stable and show good solubility in chlorinated solvents. The highest power conversion efficiency of 1.6% was achieved in the bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device that consisted of poly ((E)?6‐(7‐(benzo‐[c][1,2,5]‐thiadiazol‐4‐yl)?2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)?6′‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]‐dioxin‐5‐yl)?1,1′‐bis‐(2‐octyldodecyl)‐[3,3′‐biindolinylidene]‐2,2′‐dione) as the donor and PC61BM as the acceptor, with a short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.10 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.56 V and a fill factor of 35%, which indicates that these polymers are promising donors for polymer solar cell applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semiconducting polymers form a variety of phases and mesophases that respond differently to postdeposition solvent or thermal treatments. Here it is shown that classification of these materials into their appropriate mesophases can be a useful tool to optimize their thermal postdeposition treatments. Calorimetry is used to quantify differences between materials having similar molecular structures, using a well‐established framework based on the kinetics and thermodynamics of phase changes. By way of example, this classification scheme is used to identify differences in three polymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) and two isomeric bithiophene–thienothiophene copolymers. It is demonstrated that poly(3‐hexylthiophene) is a “normal” polymer crystal and that the two bithiophene–thienothiophene copolymers have liquid crystalline phases. The different phase structure is notable in light of the molecular similarity of the three polymers and has an impact on the thermal postprocessing conditions that maximize field effect charge carrier mobility in thin film transistor devices. Strong superheating effects are demonstrated for the two bithiophene–thienothiophene copolymers and the impact on annealing is demonstrated using grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction. Some suggestions are also put forth for what post‐processing should be employed for each class of polymer. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Small molecule additives have been shown to increase the device efficiency of conjugated polymer (donor) and fullerene derivative (acceptor) based organic solar cells by modifying the morphology of the device active layer. In this paper we conduct a systematic study of how additives affect the donor‐acceptor morphology using molecular dynamics simulations of blends of thiophene‐based oligomers, mimicking poly(3‐dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) or poly(2,2′:5′,2”‐3,3”‐didocyl‐terthiophene) (PTTT), and fullerene derivatives with additives of varying length and chemical functionalization, mimicking experimentally used additives like methyl ester additives, diiodooctane, and alkanedithiols. We find that functionalization of additives with end groups that are attracted to acceptor molecules are necessary to induce increased donor‐acceptor macrophase separation. In blends where acceptors intercalate between oligomer alkyl side chains, functionalized additives decrease acceptor intercalation. Functionalized additives with shorter alkyl segments increase acceptor macrophase separation more than additives with same chemical functionalization but longer alkyl segments. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This contribution presents the correlation between structural, morphological, and fluorescence properties as well as device performance of nanocomposite solar cells comprising two low‐band gap polymers, poly[[9‐(1‐octylnonyl)?9H‐carbazole‐2,7‐diyl]‐2,5‐thiophenediyl‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl‐2,5‐thiophenediyl] (PCDTBT) and poly[2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl‐2,5‐thiophenediyl(9,9‐dioctyl‐9H‐9‐silafluorene‐2,7‐diyl)?2,5‐thiophenediyl] (PSiF‐DBT) and copper indium sulfide (CIS). It shows that, in analogy to organic solar cells, the device efficiency is strongly determined by different polymer structures leading to a different packing of the polymer chains and consequently to diverse morphologies. X‐ray diffraction investigation indicates increased semicrystallinity in PSiF‐DBT compared with the nitrogen analogue PCDTBT. The photoluminescence (PL) quenching of this polymer indicates that the higher photogeneration achieved in PSiF‐DBT based films can be correlated to a favorable donor‐acceptor phase separation. Transmission electron microscopy studies of PCDTBT:CIS blended films suggest the formation of polymer agglomerates in the layer resulting in a decreased PL quenching efficiency. For the considered polymer:CIS system, the combination of these effects leads to an enhanced overall device efficiency. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. Part B: Polym.
