The phase‐separation kinetics of liquid‐crystalline polymer/flexible polymer blends was studied by the coupled time‐dependent Ginzberg–Landau equations for compositional order parameter ? and orientational order parameter Sij. The computer simulations of phase‐separated structures of the blends were performed by means of the cell dynamical system in two dimensions. The compositional ordering processes of phase separation are demonstrated by the time evolution of ?. The influence of orientational ordering on compositional ordering is discussed. The small‐angle light scattering patterns are numerically reproduced by means of the optical Fourier transformation of spatial variation of the polarizability tensor αij, and the azimuthal dependence of the scattering intensity distribution is interpreted. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Although selective laser sintering (SLS) has been widely applied in many fields, more research work is needed to develop proper polymer microspheres for SLS. Thermal‐induced phase separation (TIPS) is a facile way but rarely reported to prepare the polymer microspheres. The roles of liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization in the TIPS process are not clear. In this study, proper polypropylene (PP) microspheres for SLS are successfully prepared via TIPS with xylene. The diameters and morphologies of these PP microspheres can be regulated easily by changing the PP concentration and the quench temperature. The large undercooling drives the solution into the metastable LLPS region and produces PP microspheres with smooth surfaces. The PP crystallization occurs both on the LLPS interface and inside the polymer‐rich phase when the solution is quenched to a temperature near the binodal line, and the tiny bent lamellae are formed on the microsphere surface. At higher temperature only PP crystallization occurs, which results in the formation of PP particles consisting of packed lamellae. The PP microspheres prepared here are suitable for SLS and promote the development of SLS potentially. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2017 , 55, 320–329  相似文献

A hyperbranched polyglycerol bearing imidazolium tosylate units ( ITHB ) was synthesized through the imidazolium salt‐modification of hyperbranched polyglycerol ( HB ). ITHB was found to possess novel reversible lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type liquid–liquid and liquid–solid phase transition behaviors in a methanol/chloroform mixed solution. The phase transition temperatures of the liquid–liquid phase transition (PTT1to2) and liquid–solid phase transition (PTT2toSus) increased with increasing the ratio of methanol in the mixed solution and decreasing the concentration of ITHB . Additionally, increasing the molecular weight of ITHB decreased the PTT values. The liquid–liquid phase transition was caused by the aggregation of ITHB , which was proved by dynamic light scattering measurement. In contrast, the liquid–solid phase transition was caused by the solvation cleavage between the imidazolium rings and solvents, which was proved by 1H NMR measurement. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced phase separation from an all‐monomeric system by direct copolymerization offers the formation of heterogeneous polymeric structures without reliance on polymer blends, block copolymers, or interpenetrating polymer networks. This study examines the potential for the formation of compositional heterogeneity in copolymer networks obtained by free‐radical photopolymerizations of initially homogeneous mixtures of bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate and isodecyl methacrylate as the comonomer ratios and polymerization conditions are varied. Comonomer proportions that control thermodynamic stability prior to (as determined by cloud point measurements) and during [as determined by turbidity measurements coupled with near‐infrared (IR) spectroscopy] polymerization were shown to be a more influential factor on phase separation than irradiance‐imposed kinetic control of the photopolymerization process. Through photorheometry coupled with near‐IR and ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis), the onset of phase separation was shown to occur at very low conversions and always prior to gelation (as estimated by the crossover of G′/G″). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The efficiency optimization of bulk heterojunction solar cells requires the control of the local active materials arrangement in order to obtain the best compromise between efficient charge generation and charge collection. Here, we investigate the large scale (10–100 μm) inhomogeneity of the photoluminescence (PL) and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) in inverted all‐polymer solar cells (APSC) with regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT):poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) active blends. The morphology and the local active polymer mixing are changed by depositing the active layer from four different solvents and by thermal annealing. The simultaneous PL and EQE mapping allowed us to inspect the effects of local irregularities of active layer thickness, polymer mixing, polymer aggregation on the charge generation and collection efficiencies. In particular, we show that the increase of the solvent boiling point affects the EQE non‐uniformity due to thickness fluctuations, the density non‐uniformity of rrP3HT aggregate phase, and the blend components clustering. The thermal annealing leads to a general improvement of EQE and to an F8BT clustering in all the samples with locally decrease of the EQE. We estimate that the film uniformity optimization can lead to a total EQE improvement between 2.7 and 6.3 times. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. A series of novel soluble donor‐acceptor low‐bandgap‐conjugated polymers consisting of different oligothiophene (OTh) coupled to electron‐accepting moiety 2‐pyran‐4‐ylidenemalononitrile (PM)‐based unit were synthesized by Stille or Suzuki coupling polymerization. The combination of electron‐accepting PM building block with varied OThn (the number of thiophene unit increases from 3 to 5) results in enhanced π–π stacking in solid state and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which lead to an extension of the absorption spectra of the copolymers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and molecular orbital distribution calculations indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) energy levels could be fine‐tuned by changing the number of thiophene units of the copolymers, and the resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high‐open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the copolymers as donors and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor. It was found that the highest Voc reached 0.94 V, and the short circuit currents (Jsc) were improved from 1.78 to 2.54 mA/cm2, though the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.61 and 0.99% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, which indicated that this series copolymers can be promising candidates for the photovoltaic applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The role of high pressure on a low molecular weight nematic liquid crystalline organic semiconductor, ethyl‐hexyl substituted polyfluorene (PF2/6) is investigated using photoluminescence (PL), Raman scattering, and X‐ray scattering studies at pressures from 1 to 8 GPa. The PL and the Raman data under pressure are consistent with each other with no abrupt changes in the pressure coefficients of PL or Raman peaks. The PL energies redshift and broaden, consistent with both enhanced intra‐ and interchain interactions. The Raman peak positions yield pressure coefficients similar to other phenyl based π‐conjugated polymers. The broadening of a doublet peak in the 1135 cm?1 region indicates a more planar backbone conformation with increasing pressure. X‐ray scattering indicates that the torsion angle between adjacent repeats reduces with increasing pressure and reverts back with decompression. The intermolecular structure is weakly ordered (frozen nematic) and essentially maintained with increasing pressure, in contrast to a high molecular weight PF2/6. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The effect of liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) on the crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene‐ran‐vinyl acetate) with a vinyl acetate content of 9.5 wt % (EVA‐H) in the critical composition of a 35/65 (wt/wt) EVA‐H/paraffin wax blend was investigated by small‐angle light and X‐ray scattering methods and rheometry. This blend exhibited an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 98°C, and an LLPS was observed between the UCST and the melting point of 88°C for the EVA‐H in the blend. As the duration time in the LLPS region increased before crystallization at 65°C, both the spherulite size and the crystallization rate of the EVA‐H increased, but the degree of the lamellar ordering in the spherulite and the degree of crystallinity of the EVA‐H in the blend decreased. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of liquid–liquid phase‐separation (LLPS) on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene‐ran‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) with various amounts of vinyl acetate and paraffin wax blend was investigated. The blend of EVA‐H (9.5% vinyl acetate) and the wax became homogeneous at temperatures greater than its upper critical solution temperature (UCST) (98°C), and an LLPS was observed between UCST and the melting point of 88°C for EVA‐H in the blend. The existence of the LLPS is attributed to the relatively large amount of the hydrophilic component of vinyl acetate in EVA, although the molecular weight of the wax was just 560. However, LLPS did not occur for the EVA/wax blend when the content of vinyl acetate in EVA was less than 3%. This behavior was explained by using the Flory–Huggins lattice model with an effective interaction parameter. The degree of crystallinity of EVA‐H in the EVA‐H/wax blend, judged from a melting endothermic peak in differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) thermograms obtained during heating runs, decreased with increasing duration time in the LLPS region. The flexural modulus of the EVA/wax blend became maximum at certain blend composition (about 30 ∼ 40 wt % EVA depending upon the amount of vinyl acetate). This behavior can be explained by the fact that this blend composition has the largest relative degree of crystallinity of EVA measured by DSC and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering method. We found that the flexural modulus of the binder itself is directly related to that of a feedstock consisting of larger amounts of metal powder and the binder, which can help someone to develop a suitable binder system for a powder injection molding process. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Various topological phase diagrams of blends of main-chain liquid crystalline polymer (MCLCP) and flexible polymer have been established theoretically in the framework of Matsuyama–Kato theory by combining Flory–Huggins (FH) free energy for isotropic mixing, Maier–Saupe (MS) free energy for nematic ordering in the constituent MCLCP, and free energy pertaining to polymer chain-rigidity. As a scouting study, various phase diagrams of binary flexible polymer blends have been solved self-consistently that reveal a combined lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST), including an hourglass phase diagram. The calculated phase diagrams exhibit liquidus and solidus lines along with a nematic–isotropic (NI) transition of the constituent MCLCP. Depending on the strengths of the FH interaction parameters and the anisotropic (nematic–nematic) interaction parameters, the self-consistent solution reveals an hourglass type phase diagram overlapping with the NI transition of the constituent MCLCP. Subsequently, thermodynamic parameters estimated from the phase diagrams hitherto established have been employed in the numerical computation to elucidate phase separation dynamics and morphology evolution accompanying thermal-quench induced phase separation of the MCLCP/polymer mixture. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new liquid crystalline (LC) acceptor monomer 2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyanobiphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐3,6‐dithiophen‐2‐yl‐pyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione (TDPPcbp) was synthesized by incorporating cyanobiphenyl mesogens into diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP). The monomer was copolymerized with bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′] dithiophene (BDT) and N‐9′‐heptadecanylcarbazole (CB) donors to obtain donor–acceptor alternating copolymers poly[4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐alt‐3,6‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyanobiphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐2,5‐dihydropyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione] (PBDTDPPcbp) and poly[N‐9′‐heptadecanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐3,6‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyano‐biphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐2,5‐dihydropyrrolo[3, 4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione] (PCBTDPPcpb) with reduced band gap, respectively. The LC properties of the copolymers, the effects of main chain variation on molecular packing, optical properties, and energy levels were analyzed. Incorporating the mesogen cyanobiphenyl units not only help polymer donors to pack well through mesogen self‐organization but also push the fullerene acceptor to form optimized phase separation. The bulk heterojunction photovoltaicdevicesshow enhanced performance of 1.3% for PBDTDPPcbp and 1.2% for PCBTDPPcbp after thermal annealing. The results indicate that mesogen‐controlled self‐organization is an efficient approach to develop well‐defined morphology and to improve the device performance. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase diagrams of main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymer (MCLCP) solutions have been calculated self‐consistently on the basis of a simple addition of the Flory–Huggins free energy for isotropic mixing, the Maier–Saupe free energy for nematic ordering, and the Flory free energy for chain rigidity of the MCLCP backbone. The calculated phase diagram is an upper critical solution type overlapping with the nematic–isotropic transition. The phase diagram consists of liquid–liquid, liquid–nematic, and pure nematic regions. Subsequently, the dynamics of thermally induced phase separation and morphology development have been investigated by the incorporation of the combined free energy density into the coupled time‐dependent Ginzburg–Landau (model C) equations, which involve conserved compositional and nonconserved orientational order parameters. The numerical calculations reveal a variety of the morphological patterns arising from the competition between liquid–liquid phase separation and nematic ordering of the liquid‐crystalline polymer. Of particular interest is the observation of an inflection in the growth dynamic curve, which may be attributed to the nematic ordering of the MCLCP component, which leads to the breakdown of the interconnected domains. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonlinear optical (NLO) rigid main‐chain polyesters containing azobenzene mesogens with high thermal and temporal stabilities were synthesized from derivatives of hydroxyphenylazobenzoic acid. The NLO properties of the homopolymer, poly[4‐(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and copolymers of 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐pentadecyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid (PSCpHBA) with p‐HBA were measured by the Maker fringe technique. The thermal and liquid‐crystalline (LC) phase behaviors of the polymers were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, a thermal‐stimulated polarization current, and polarized light microscopy. The polymers except PSCpHBA exhibited nematic‐threaded and Schlieren textures. The LC orientations give rise to an enhanced NLO response. The polymers had high thermal and temporal stabilities for second‐harmonic generation activity because of their rigid aromatic backbone. This study suggests that the rigid aromatic main chain exhibiting an LC phase is a promising simple method to synthesize highly stable NLO polymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by a devised method, in which photo‐polymerization induced phase separation in a mixtures of a macro‐iniferter, methyl acrylater, and liquid crystal. The morphology of the obtained PDLC films was examined on a polarized optical microscopy, and the effect of molecular weight of MIs on the electro‐optical properties was deliberately investigated. Decreasing the molecular weight of MIs in the films led to formation of larger liquid crystal droplets and a lower Vth values. Vsat increased and the memory effect decreased because of the increased interface anchoring strength induced by the higher molecular weight of polymer matrices. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conjugated polymers consisting of pyrrole or an N‐substituted pyrrole bridged by methine with a mesogenic group were synthesized. Chemical structures of the products were confirmed with IR, NMR, UV–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography analysis. Liquid crystallinity was examined with differential scanning calorimetry measurements and polarizing optical microscopy observations. Liquid crystal domains of the polymer were macroscopically oriented in one direction by an external magnetic force (10 Tesla). The polymer orientation was confirmed by optical microscopy and X‐ray analysis. One of the polymers exhibited a striated fan‐shaped texture when observed with a polarizing optical microscope. This is attributed to the formation of a chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase, which is a property of ferroelectricity. Spontaneous polarization of the polymer occurred at 110 nC/cm2. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 616–629, 2005  相似文献

Liquid–liquid thermally induced phase separation of the polymer‐diluent system of poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)‐glycerol was examined under light scattering. For EVOH with an ethylene content of 38 mol % (EVOH38), maxima of the scattered light intensity were observed that indicated that phase separation occurred by the spinodal decomposition (SD). The growth of the structures formed by the general liquid–liquid phase separation obeyed a power‐law scaling relationship in SD. For EVOH with an ethylene content of 32 mol % (EVOH32), the liquid–liquid phase separation resulted from the polymer crystallization. In this case, the structure growth showed the characteristic behavior in which the crystalline particles were initially formed, and then the droplets formed by the liquid–liquid phase separation induced by the crystallization grew rapidly. Furthermore, the growth of the droplet by the phase separation was followed by an optical microscope measurement at a constant cooling rate. The phase‐separated structure formed after the crystallization can grow faster than that formed by the normal liquid–liquid phase separation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid materials composed of phase‐separated block copolymer films and conjugated polymers of the phenylenevinylene family (PPV) are prepared. The PPV chains are embedded in vertical cylinders of nanometer diameter in the block‐copolymer films. The cylinders span continuously the whole film thickness of 70 nm. Incorporation of the PPV chains into the one‐dimensional cylinders leads to modified photoluminescence spectra and to large absorption anisotropy. The hybrid films show electroluminescence from the PPV chains in a simple light‐emitting device at minute doping concentrations, and also exhibit a factor of 19 increase in electron transport efficiency along the single PPV chains.  相似文献

Novel low‐band gap alternating copolymers consisting of 9,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)fluorene and 4,6‐di(2‐thienyl)thieno[3,4‐c][1,2,5]thiadiazole and its 3,3″‐dialkyl derivatives were synthesized by Suzuki copolymerization reaction, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied. The copolymers possess small optical band gap 1.3–1.4 eV. The absorption covers the whole visible spectral region. The long‐wavelength absorption maxima in thin films located at approximately 750–785 nm are significantly red shifted compared with those in solution, indicating strong intermolecular interactions. The introduction of alkyl chains to the thiophene units increases the molecular weights of soluble fractions and solubility of the final copolymers, leading to the improved processability of thin films. Polymer solutions exhibited solvatochromism and thermochromism, which is strongly supported by the involvement of the alkyl chains. The copolymers exhibited ambipolar redox properties and reversible electrochromic behavior. The electronic properties are influenced only slightly by alkyl substituents. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2743–2756, 2010  相似文献

New side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers containing both cholesteric and thermochromic side groups were synthesized. Their chemical structures were confirmed with elemental analyses and Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties and phase behavior were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The effect of the concentration of dye side groups on the phase behavior of the polymers was examined. The polymers showed smectic or cholesteric phases. Those polymers containing less than 20 mol % dye groups had good solubility, reversible phase transitions, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the isotropization temperature and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentration of dye groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
