As conventional organic solvents present inherent toxicity, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been considered as excellent candidates due to their green characteristics. In this work, thermoelectric properties enhancement of PEDOT:PSS films is achieved by introducing DES as an additive and post‐treatment reagent. Direct addition and post‐treatment approaches lead to a maximum Seebeck coefficient of 29.1 μV K?1 and electrical conductivity of 620.6 S cm?1, respectively. In addition, an optimal power factor is obtained by DES post‐treatment, reaching up to 24.08 μW m?1 K?2, which is approximately four orders of magnitude higher than the pure PEDOT:PSS. Assuming a thermal conductivity of 0.17 W m?1 K?1, the maximum ZT value is estimated to be 0.042 at 300 K. Further, atomic force microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy are performed and suggest that the remarkably enhanced electrical conductivity originates from the removal of the excess insulating PSS and the phase separation between the PEDOT and PSS chains. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two well‐defined alternating π‐conjugated polymers containing a soluble electroactive benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]difuran (BDF) chromophore, poly(BDF‐(9‐phenylcarbazole)) (PBDFC), and poly(BDF‐benzothiadiazole) (PBDFBTD) were synthesized via Sonogashira copolymerizations. Their optical, electrochemical, and field‐effect charge transport properties were characterized and compared with those of the corresponding homopolymer PBDF and random copolymers of the same overall composition. All these polymers cover broad optical absorption ranges from 250 to 750 nm with narrow optical band gaps of 1.78–2.35 eV. Both PBDF and PBDFBTD show ambipolar redox properties with HOMO levels of ?5.38 and ?5.09 eV, respectively. The field‐effect mobility of holes varies from 2.9 × 10?8 cm2 V?1 s?1 in PBDF to 1.0 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1 in PBDFBTD. Bulk heterojunction solar cell devices were fabricated using the polymers as the electron donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as the electron acceptor, leading to power conversion efficiencies of 0.24–0.57% under air mass 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). These results indicate that their band gaps, molecular electronic energy levels, charge mobilities, and molecular weights are readily tuned by copolymerizing the BDF core with different π‐conjugated units. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present the enhanced photorefractive performance of high molecular weight poly(N‐vinyl carbazole) (PVCz)‐based composites. Higher diffraction efficiency with faster speed of grating build‐up was obtained by optimizing the composition of the PVCz composites. At relatively low applied electric field of E = 45 V μm?1, diffraction efficiency of 26% for p‐polarized probe beam and corresponding that of 5.1% for s‐polarized probe beam were measured with faster grating build‐up speed of 48.3 s?1 for the composite with 2,4,7‐trinitrofluorenone (TNF) as a sensitizer. Fastest speed of grating build‐up of 100 s?1 and large optical gain up to 110 cm?1 were measured at E = 80 V μm?1 for the composite with fullerene derivative of PCBM as a sensitizer. These improved performances are due to a large orientational enhancement effect with faster response speed in addition to Pockels effect for the samples with appropriate glass transition temperature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charge transport properties in thin films of Poly(2‐methoxy‐5‐(3′,7′‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) (MDMO PPV) cast using either chloroform (CF), toluene (TOL), or chlorobenzene (CB) as solvent were investigated. Hole mobility (μ) in these thin films measured using time‐of‐flight transient photoconductivity showed an increasing trend with respect to the solvent used in the same order, that is, μCF (2.4 × 10?7 cm2/Vs) < μTOL (6.9 × 10?7 cm2/Vs) < μCB (2.3 × 10?6 cm2/Vs). Observed variations in mobilities were attributed to different morphologies of MDMO PPV chains in thin films cast using the aforesaid solvents. Nature of the interchain interactions and aggregate formation were obtained using photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, and AFM studies. Ratio of PL peak intensities of 0–0 and 0–1 transitions, which is a direct measure of interchain interaction, was the highest in CB and lowest in CF. Variation in the relative intensities of out‐of‐plane wagging of vinylene group (~963 cm?1 mode) in Raman spectra suggested different extent of coiling of polymer chains in these thin films. From these observations, it was elicited that aggregate size and interchain interactions are highest in CB and least in CF. AFM‐based topographic images of thin films further supported these variations in the size of aggregates. Variation in the aggregate sizes and interchain interactions explained the corresponding variation in the mobility. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. A novel conjugated polymer, poly(thienylene‐vinylene‐thienylene) with cyano substituent ( CN‐PTVT ) was synthesized via Stille coupling for the application in air stable field‐effect transistor and polymer solar cell. The polymer was characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, UV‐vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, TGA, cyclic voltammetry and XRD analysis. CN‐PTVT exhibits a good thermal stability with 5% weight loss at 306 °C. The FET hole mobility of the polymer reached 5.9 × 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1 with Ion/Ioff ratio of 4.9 × 104, which is one of the highest performance among the air‐stable amorphous polymers. The polymer solar cell based on CN‐PTVT as donor and PCBM as acceptor shows a relatively high open‐circuit voltage of 0.82 V and a power conversion efficiency of 0.3% under the illumination of AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 3‐hexylthiophene was electropolymerized on a carbon nanotube (CNT)‐laden fluorine‐doped tin oxide substrate. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the polymer was infused throughout the thickness of the 150‐nm thick CNT mat, resulting in a conducting composite film with a dense CNT network. The electropolymerized poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (e‐P3HT)/CNT composites exhibited photoluminescence intensity quenching by as much as 92% compared to the neat e‐P3HT, which provided evidence of charge transfer from the polymer phase to the CNT phase. Through‐film impedance and J‐V measurements of the composites gave a conductivity (σ) of 1.2 × 10?10 S cm?1 and zero‐field mobility (μ0) of 8.5 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, both of which were higher than those of neat e‐P3HT films (σ = 9.9 × 10?12 S cm?1, μ0 = 3 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1). In electropolymerized samples, the thiophene rings were oriented in the (010) direction (thiophene rings parallel to substrate), which resulted in a broader optical absorbance than for spin coated samples, however, the lack of long‐range conjugation caused a blueshift in the absorbance maximum from 523 nm for unannealed regioregular P3HT (rr‐P3HT) to 470 nm for e‐P3HT. Raman spectroscopy revealed that π‐π stacking in e‐P3HT was comparable to that in rr‐P3HT and significantly higher than in regiorandom P3HT (ran‐P3HT) as shown by the principal Raman peak shift from 1444 to 1446 cm?1 for e‐P3HT and rr‐P3HT to 1473 cm?1 for ran‐P3HT. This work demonstrates that these polymer/CNT composites may have interesting properties for electro‐optical applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the polymerization of rhenium‐containing methacrylates by atom transfer radical polymerization. The structure of the monomer was confirmed by X‐ray crystallography, which showed the bulkiness of the metal‐complex moiety. The rhenium complexes were polymerized in the presence of copper(I) bromide, 1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, and methyl 2‐bromopropionate. They were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate in different monomer ratios. An ABA triblock copolymer was also synthesized with poly(methyl methacrylate) as the macroinitiator. When 2,2′‐bipyridine was used as the ligand for the copper catalyst in the polymerizations, it underwent a ligand exchange process with the iminopyridine ligand in the monomer. The neutral rhenium complex in the homopolymers and copolymers could be converted into ionic forms by the replacement of the chloride with an imidazole ligand, and the solubility of the resulting ionic polymers was greatly enhanced. The photosensitizing properties of the doped and undoped polymer films were investigated by the measurement of the photocurrent response under an externally applied electric field. The photoconductivities of the polymers were approximately 10?12–10?13 Ω?1 cm?1. The experimental quantum efficiencies were simulated with Onsager's theory, and they showed that the initial quantum yield and thermalization distance were 10?3 and 1.7 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the rhenium complexes aggregated to form domains with dimensions of approximately 20–30 nm. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of novel conjugated polyfluorene co‐ polymers, poly[(9,9′‐didecylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)‐co‐(4,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐ 2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole‐5,5‐diyl)‐co‐(pyrene‐1,6‐diyl)], are synthesized via Pd(II)‐mediated polymerization from 2,7‐bis(4′,4′,5′, 5′‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)‐9,9′‐di‐n‐decylfluorene, 4, 7‐di(2‐bromothien‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole, and 1,6‐dibromopyrene with a variety of monomer molar ratios. The field‐effect carrier mobilities and optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers are systematically investigated. The hole mobilities of the copolymers are found to be in the range 7.0 × 10?5 ? 8.0 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1 and the on/off ratios were 8 × 103 ? 7 × 104. Conventional polymer solar cells (PSCs) with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC71BM/LiF/Al are fabricated. Under optimized conditions, the polymers display power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range 1.99–3.37% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). Among the four copolymers, P2, containing a 2.5 mol % pyrene component incorporated into poly[9,9′‐didecylfluorene‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)] (PFDTBT) displays a PCE of 3.37% with a short circuit current of 9.15 mA cm?2, an open circuit voltage of 0.86 V, and a fill factor of 0.43, under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two‐dimensional (2D) WS2 nanosheets (NSs) as a promising thermoelectric (TE) material have gained great concern recently. The low electrical conductivity significantly limits its further development. Herein, we reported an effective method to enhance the TE performance of WS2 NSs by combining poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4‐styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The restacked WS2 NSs thin film with 1T phase structure obtained by a common chemical lithium intercalation show a high Seebeck coefficient of 98 μV K?1 and a poor electrical conductivity of 12.5 S cm?1. The introduction of PEDOT:PSS with different contents obviously improve the electrical conductivity of WS2 NSs thin films. Although a declining Seebeck coefficient was observed, an optimized TE power factor of 45.2 μW m?1 k?1 was achieved for WS2/PEDOT:PSS composite thin film. Moreover, the as‐prepared WS2/PEDOT:PSS thin film can be easily peeled off and transferred to other substrate leading to a more promising application. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The effects of the addition of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) on wettability of regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) organic semiconductor solutions on hydrophobic substrates and the carrier mobility in organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) made of these films are investigated. The dewetting of films made from P3HT solutions on hydrophobic substrates modified with octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS) is markedly suppressed after the addition of SNPs with phenyl surfactants. This enables us to fabricate continuous P3HT/SNPs films with high crystallinity by the conventional spin‐coating technique, leading to higher mobility compared with P3HT FETs fabricated on non‐modified substrates. Moreover, the addition of SNPs with larger diameters compensates for the degradation of mobility associated with the increase in the concentration of SNPs. Solution‐processed P3HT/SNPs FETs on ODTS‐modified substrates exhibit a field‐effect mobility of 1.3 × 10?2 cm2 V?1 s?1, which is almost comparable to that of P3HT FETs without SNPs (2.1 × 10?2 cm2 V?1 s?1). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel bi‐functional photorefractive (PR) hyperbranched polyisophthalesters (HPIPEs) with pendant end carbazolyl and azo groups, acting as photoconductors and electro‐optic (EO) chromophores, respectively, were synthesized by modifying the HPIPE with N‐hydroxyethyl carbazole and 4‐(p‐nitrophenylazo) (N‐ethoxyl‐N‐methyl)aniline. These obtained PR polymers were then characterized by UV‐vis and IR spectrum, 1H‐NMR, elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements and thermal analysis. As expected, due to their three‐dimension molecular structures, the lower glass transition temperatures (21–49°C) were obtained in the absence of plasticizers, which provide a necessary free volume for the EO chromophores reorientation. The acceptable thermal stability, as well as the degradation temperatures of 205–260°C, was also determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The two‐beam coupling experiments of HPIPE‐25Azo theoretically containing 25% azo end groups showed that a high gain coefficient of 59 cm?1 was obtained at the applied electric field of 80 V μm?1. A novel, easy, and cost‐effective synthetic procedure is reported for the production of very highly regioregular poly[3‐(4‐alkoxyphenyl)thiophene]s by means of oxidative coupling. Four copper complexes were synthesized and used as catalysts to obtain polymers with higher regioregularity compared to the previous oxidative coupling methodologies reported in the literature and similar to that obtained by McCullough and Rieke methods in the synthesis of poly‐3‐alkylthiophenes. The regioregularity of the synthesized polymers was investigated by UV–Visible characterization on polymer thin films and 1H NMR analysis. The remarkable potentialities of these polymers have emerged from field‐effect transistor mobility measurements operated on devices with bottom‐contact configuration and hexamethyldisilazane‐treated SiO2 gate dielectric, showing a well‐defined p‐type field‐effect response and maximum mobility values in air higher than 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypyrrole nanotubes with diameter 60–400 nm are synthesized with methyl orange as template and various oxidants, iron(III) chloride hexahydrate, iron(III) sulfate hydrate, and ammonium peroxydisulfate. The highest electrical conductivity of compressed pellets, 66 S cm?1, is found for iron(III) chloride. Regions with 3D variable range hopping in series with ordered regions near metal–insulator transition govern the charge transport. Other oxidants and globular morphology provide less conducting samples, <10 S cm?1. The transport mechanism is identified with the heterogeneous model of tunneling between (bi)polaronic clusters with parallel contribution of Arrhenius‐like activated conductivity. The results of conductivity are correlated with the protonation level reflected in the infrared spectra and with the ratio of bipolaron/polaron bands revealed by Raman spectroscopy. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new phenothiazine‐based donor–acceptor copolymers, P1 and P2, were synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction. The weight‐averaged molecular weights (Mw) of P1 and P2 were found to be 16,700 and 16,100, with polydispersity indices of 1.74 and 1.39, respectively. The UV–visible absorption spectra of the polymer thin films contained three strong absorption bands in the ranges 318–320 nm, 430–436 nm, and 527–568 nm. The absorption peaks at 320 and 430 nm originated mainly from the phenothiazine‐based monomer units, and the longer wavelength absorption band at 527–568 nm was attributed to the increased effective conjugation length of the polymer backbones. Solution‐processed field‐effect transistors fabricated with these polymers exhibited p‐type organic thin film transistor characteristics. The field‐effect mobilities of P1 and P2 were measured to be 1.0 × 10?4 and 7.5 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, with on/off ratios in the order of 104 for all polymers. A photovoltaic device in which a P2/PC71BM (1/3) blend film was used as the active layer exhibited an open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.70 V, a short‐circuit current (JSC) of 6.79 mA cm(2, a fill factor of 0.39, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.86% under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm?2) illumination. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Development of chemically doped high performance n‐type organic thermoelectric (TE) materials is of vital importance for flexible power generating applications. For the first time, bismuth (Bi) n‐type chemical doping of organic semiconductors is described, enabling high performance TE materials. The Bi interfacial doping of thiophene‐diketopyrrolopyrrole‐based quinoidal (TDPPQ) molecules endows the film with a balanced electrical conductivity of 3.3 S cm?1 and a Seebeck coefficient of 585 μV K?1. The newly developed TE material possesses a maximum power factor of 113 μW m?1 K?2, which is at the forefront for organic small molecule‐based n‐type TE materials. These studies reveal that fine‐tuning of the heavy metal doping of organic semiconductors opens up a new strategy for exploring high performance organic TE materials.  相似文献

Polymers having 2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (BCO) or anthracene (BCA) as an electron transport unit and N,N′‐diphenyl‐N,N′‐bis(4‐butylphenyl)‐benzidine (BTPD) as a hole transport unit were prepared by condensation polymerization using Friedel–Crafts reaction. It was found that BCO was less reactive than BCA. The low reactivity of the BCO monomer can be explained by the oxygen atom in the oxadiazole unit, which acts as a Lewis base and reduces the activity of the catalyst. The redox behavior measured by cyclic voltammetry showed for both BTPD‐BCO and BTPD‐BCA almost the same oxidation potential. In addition, the BTPD‐BCO also exhibited a reduction peak. Hole and electron drifts mobility of the polymers were measured by the time‐of‐flight method. The hole drift mobility of both BTPD‐BCO and BTPD‐BCA was 7.4 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1. The electron drift mobilities of BTPD‐BCO and BTPD‐BCA were 6.5 × 10?5 cm2 V?1 s?1 and 5.2 × 10?6 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two regiochemically defined polythiophenes containing thiazolothiazole acceptor unit were synthesized by palladium(0)‐catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. The thermal, electrochemical, optical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these copolymers were examined. Compared to P1 with head‐to‐head coupling of two middle thiophenes, P2 with head‐to‐tail coupling of two middle thiophenes exhibits 40 nm red shift of absorption spectrum in film and 0.3 eV higher HOMO level. Both polymers exhibit field‐effect hole mobility as high as 0.02 cm2 V?1 s?1. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated based on the blend of the polymers and methanofullerene[6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). The PSC based on P1 :PC71BM (1:2, w/w) exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 2.7% under AM 1.5, 100 mW cm?2, two times of that based on P2 :PC71BM. The higher efficiency is attributed to lower HOMO (?5.6 eV) and smaller phase separation scale in P1 :PC71BM blend. Tiny change in thiophene connection of P1 and P2 lead to great difference in HOMO, phase separation scale, and efficiency of their photovoltaic devices. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new polymers poly(3,4′′′‐didodecyl) hexaselenophene) (P6S), poly(5,5′‐bis(4,4′‐didodecyl‐2,2′‐biselenophene‐5‐yl)‐2,2′‐biselenophene) (HHP6S), and poly(5,5′‐bis(3′,4‐didodecyl‐2,2′‐biselenophene‐5‐yl)‐2,2′‐biselenophene) (TTP6S) that have the same selenophene‐based polymer backbone but different side chain patterns were designed and synthesized. The weight‐averaged molecular weights (Mw) of P6S, HHP6S, and TTP6S were found to be 19,100, 24,100, and 19,700 with polydispersity indices of 2.77, 1.48, and 1.41, respectively. The UV–visible absorption maxima of P6S, HHP6S, and TTP6S are at 524, 489, and 513 nm, respectively, in solution and at 569, 517, and 606 nm, respectively, in the film state. The polymers P6S, HHP6S, and TTP6S exhibit low band gaps of 1.74, 1.95, and 1.58 eV, respectively. The field‐effect mobilities of P6S, HHP6S, and TTP6S were measured to be 1.3 × 10?4, 3.9 × 10?6, and 3.2 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively. A photovoltaic device with a TTP6S/[6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (1:3, w/w) blend film active layer was found to exhibit an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.71 V, a short circuit current (JSC) of 5.72 mA cm?2, a fill factor of 0.41, and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.67% under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm?2) illumination. TTP6S has the most planar backbone of the tested polymers, which results in strong π–π interchain interactions and strong aggregation, leading to broad absorption, high mobility, a low band gap, and the highest PCE. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To obtain novel low‐bandgap materials with tailored hole‐transport properties and extended absorption, electron rich 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene is introduced as a comonomer in diketopyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole copolymers with different aryl flanking units. The polymers are characterized by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, dynamic scanning calorimetry, cyclic voltammetry, and X‐ray diffraction. The charge transport properties of these new materials are studied carefully using an organic field effect transistor geometry where the charge carriers are transported over a narrow channel at the semiconductor/dielectric interface. These results are compared to bulk charge carrier mobilities using space‐charge limited current (SCLC) measurements, in which the charge carrier is transported through the complete film thickness of several hundred nanometers. Finally, charge carrier mobilities are correlated with the electronic structure of the compounds. We find that in particular the thiophene‐flanked copolymer PDPP[T]2‐EDOT is a very promising candidate for organic photovoltaics, showing an absorption response in the near infrared region with an optical bandgap of 1.15 eV and a very high bulk hole mobility of 2.9 × 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1 as measured by SCLC. This value is two orders of magnitudes higher than SCLC mobilities reported for other polydiketopyrrolopyrroles and is in the range of the well‐known hole transporting polymer poly(3‐hexylthiophene). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New isoindigo and di(thienyl)ethylene‐containing π‐extended conjugated polymers with different branched side chains were synthesized to investigate their physical properties and device performance in thin‐film transistors and photovoltaic cells. 11‐Butyltricosane (S3) and 11‐heptyltricosane (S6) groups were used as side‐chain moieties tethered to isoindigo units. The linking groups between the polymer backbone and bifurcation point in the branched side chain differ in the two polymers (i.e., PIDTE‐S3 and PIDTE‐S6 ). The polymers bearing S6 side chains showed much better charge transport behavior than those with S3 side chains. Thermally annealed PIDTE‐S6 film exhibited an outstanding hole mobility of 4.07 cm2 V?1 s?1 under ambient conditions. Furthermore, bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells made from a blend film of PIDTE‐S3 and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester demonstrated promising device performance with a power conversion efficiency in the range of 4.9–5.0%. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
