Issai Schur once asked if it was possible to determine a bound, preferably using elementary methods, such that for all prime numbers p greater than the bound, the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p is always less than p1/2. This paper uses elementary methods to prove that 13 is the only prime number for which the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p exceeds p1/2.  相似文献

Assume that G=∪i=1mH2yiH1=∪j=1nH1gjH1 and that y1=1,g1=1.Let Di be the set consisting of right cosets of H2 contained in H2yiH1 and let dj(j=1, . . . ,n) be the set consisting of right cosets contained in H1gjH1.We define the n×m matrix Mz(z=1, . . . ,m) whose columns and rows are indexed by Di and dj respectively and the (dk,Dl) entry is |Dzgk∩Dl|. Let M=(M1, . . . ,Mm). Assume that 1H1G and 1H2G are semisimple permutation modules of a finite group G. In this paper, by using the matrix M , we give some sufficient and necessary conditions such that 1H1G is isomorphic to a submodule of 1H2G.As an application, we prove Foulkes' conjecture in special cases.  相似文献

Compton's method of proving monadic second-order limit laws is based on analyzing the generating function of a class of finite structures. For applications of his deeper results we previously relied on asymptotics obtained using Cauchy's integral formula. In this paper we develop elementary techniques, based on a Tauberian theorem of Schur, that significantly extend the classes of structures for which we know that Compton's theory can be applied.

In this paper we study the local behaviour of a trigonometric polynomial around any of its zeros in terms of its estimated values at an adequate number of freely chosen points in . The freedom in the choice of sample points makes our results particularly convenient for numerical calculations. Analogous results for polynomials of the form are also proved.

Formulas are obtained that express the Schur S-functions indexed by Young diagrams of rectangular shape as linear combinations of “mixed” products of Schur's S- and Q-functions. These are similar to generalizations shown by Bergelson (1986) in [1] and Frankl, Graham and Rödl (1990) in [7]. The flow of a laminar wall jet along either a moving plate, or in a free stream, or in combined moving plate and free stream is considered. The plate is isothermal and its temperature is different from that of the ambient fluid. The governing boundary-layer equations are converted into non-dimensional form and are solved numerically. Velocity and temperature profiles as well as the variation of wall shear stress and wall heat transfer are presented for all cases considered. For the case of a moving plate new results have been found although this problem has been investigated in the past. For the case of the free stream and the combined moving plate/free stream all the results are new and are presented for the first time in the literature. The three cases have been tackled with a unified way.  相似文献

In this paper the ideas of Algebraic Number Theory are applied to the Theory of Orthogonal polynomials for algebraic measures. The transferring tool are Wall continued fractions. It is shown that any set of closed arcs on the circle supports a quadratic measure and that any algebraic measure is either a Szegö measure or a measure supported by a proper subset of the unit circle consisting of a finite number of closed arcs. We study double Hurwitz numbers in genus zero counting the number of covers CP1CP1 with two branching points with a given branching behavior. By the recent result due to Goulden, Jackson and Vakil, these numbers are piecewise polynomials in the multiplicities of the preimages of the branching points. We describe the partition of the parameter space into polynomiality domains, called chambers, and provide an expression for the difference of two such polynomials for two neighboring chambers. Besides, we provide an explicit formula for the polynomial in a certain chamber called totally negative, which enables us to calculate double Hurwitz numbers in any given chamber as the polynomial for the totally negative chamber plus the sum of the differences between the neighboring polynomials along a path connecting the totally negative chamber with the given one.  相似文献

Let A be a unital complex C* algebra, L*(A) the projective symmetric surgery groups, and K*(A) topological K theory. We define groups B*(A) of bordism classes of Fredholm complexes over A with Poincaré duality. These generalize the de Rham complex. It is shown that there are isomorphisms B*(A)K* (A) and B*(A) L*(A) given by abstract versions of the signature operator and symmetric signature.
