Motivated by the tentative observation of superluminal neutrinos by the OPERA experiment, we present a model of active-sterile neutrino oscillations in which sterile neutrinos are superluminal and active neutrinos appear superluminal by virtue of neutrino mixing. The model demonstrates some interesting possibilities and challenges that apply to a large class of models aiming to explain the OPERA result.  相似文献

It is shown that if weak interactions can generate masses and polarize matter, then the Cherenkov effect induced by these interactions at v v > c/n appears. The effect of (resonance) enhancement of neutrino oscillations in matter (v v < c/n) and the Cherenkov (v v > c/n) effect are competitive processes and at definite neutrino energies the effect of (resonance) enhancement of neutrino oscillations in matter will change to the Cherenkov effect. Then neutrino vacuum oscillations will regenerate and we obtain an excellent possibility of estimating neutrino masses. And knowing estimation of mass for one (electron) neutrino we can obtain masses of the rest neutrinos by using the values for mass differences for neutrinos obtained in oscillation experiments.  相似文献

We consider a class of theories in which neutrino masses depend significantly on environment, as a result of interactions with the dark sector. Such theories of mass varying neutrinos were recently introduced to explain the origin of the cosmological dark energy density and why its magnitude is apparently coincidental with that of neutrino mass splittings. In this Letter we argue that in such theories neutrinos can exhibit different masses in matter and in vacuum, dramatically affecting neutrino oscillations. As an example of modifications to the standard picture, we consider simple models that may simultaneously account for the LSND anomaly, KamLAND, K2K, and studies of solar and atmospheric neutrinos, while providing motivation to continue to search for neutrino oscillations in short baseline experiments such as BooNE.  相似文献

Spin-flavor oscillations of Dirac neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field are studied using the method of relativistic quantum mechanics. Using the exact solution of the wave equation for a massive neutrino, taking into account external fields, the effective Hamiltonian governing neutrino spin-flavor oscillations is derived. Then the The consistency of our approach with the commonly used quantum mechanical method is demonstrated. The obtained correction to the usual effective Hamiltonian results in the appearance of the new resonance in neutrino oscillations. Applications to spin-flavor neutrino oscillations in an expanding envelope of a supernova are discussed. In particular, transitions between right-polarized electron neutrinos and additional sterile neutrinos are studied for realistic background matter and magnetic field distributions. The influence of other factors such as the longitudinal magnetic field, the matter polarization, and the non-standard contributions to the neutrino effective potential, is also analyzed.  相似文献

We discuss effects of new physics (NP) in neutrino oscillation experiments. Such effects can modify a production neutrino flux, a detection cross-section and a matter transition. As a result, the NP effects change neutrino oscillations both in vacuum and in matter. A relation between the small effects of NP and the oscillation parameters is discussed. It is shown for which parameters the NP effects are suppressed and when they are potentially large. Oscillations of non-unitary mixed neutrinos are presented in more details.  相似文献

We explore the dynamics of neutrinos in a vacuum dominated cosmology. First we show that such a geometry will induce a phase change in the eigenstates of a massive neutrino and we calculate the phase change. We also calculate the delay in the neutrino flight times in this geometry. Applying our results to the presently observed background vacuum energy density, we find that for neutrino sources further than 1.5 Gpc away both effects become non-trivial, being of the order of the standard relativistic corrections. Such sources are within the observable Hubble Deep Field. The results which are theoretically interesting are also potentially useful, in the future, as detection techniques improve. For example such effects on neutrinos from distant sources like supernovae could be used, in an independent method alternative to standard candles, to constrain the dark energy density and the deceleration parameter. The discussion is extended to investigate Caianiello's inertial or maximal acceleration (MA) effects of such a vacuum dominated spacetime on neutrino oscillations. Assuming that the MA phenomenon exists, we find that its form as generated by the presently observed vacuum energy density would still have little or no measurable effect on neutrino phase evolution, for neutrinos in the energy range of a few eV.  相似文献

We extend the classification of neutrino oscillations to include mirror neutrinos. Besides the traditional first- and second- class oscillations we define a third class: lepton number conserving oscillations within one flavour, or neutrino/mirror-neutrino oscillations. Signatures for different oscillation schemes in charged and neutral current processes of the oscillated neutrinos are described.  相似文献

Neutrino oscillations in matter can exhibit a specific resonance enhancement — parametric resonance, which is different from the MSW resonance. Oscillations of atmospheric and solar neutrinos inside the earth can undergo parametric enhancement when neutrino trajectories cross the core of the earth. In this paper we review the parametric resonance of neutrino oscillations in matter. In particular, physical interpretation of the effect and the prospects of its experimental observation in oscillations of solar and atmospheric neutrinos in the earth are discussed. Recent observations of a deficit of cosmic ray muon-neutrino interactions in underground detectors suggest that the muon neutrinos may have oscillated to another state. We examine possible neutrino mass and mixing patterns, and their implications for vacuum and matter effects on solar neutrinos, on neutrinos passing through the earth, and on terrastrial neutrino beams. By invoking the see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation, we draw inferences on closure of the universe with neutrino masses, on the number of generations, on t-quark and fourth generation masses, and on the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale. Testable predictions are suggested.  相似文献

We review the Floquet theory of linear differential equations with periodic coefficients and discuss its applications to neutrino oscillations in matter of periodically varying density. In particular, we consider a parametric resonance in neutrino oscillations that is possible in such media and discuss its implications for the oscillations of neutrinos traversing the Earth and passing through the Earth’s core.  相似文献

We discuss an extended model which naturally leads to mass scales and mixing angles relevant for understanding both the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies in terms of the vacuum oscillations of the three known neutrinos. The model uses a softly broken –– symmetry and contains a heavy scale GeV. The –– symmetric neutrino masses solve the atmospheric neutrino anomaly while breaking of –– generates the highly suppressed radiative mass scale needed for the vacuum solution of the solar neutrino problem. All the neutrino masses in the model are inversely related to , thus providing seesaw-type of masses without invoking any heavy right-handed neutrinos. The possible embedding of the model into an SU(5) grand unified theory is discussed. Received: 5 August 1999 / Revised version: 18 November 1999 / Published online: 6 April 2000  相似文献

Solar model independent tests of the vacuum oscillation and MSW solutions of the solar neutrino problem are considered. Detailed predictions for time (seasonal) variations of the signals due to neutrino oscillations in vacuum are given for the future solar neutrino detectors (SNO, Super-Kamiokande, BOREXINO, HELLAZ). Results on the distortions of the spectra of 8B neutrinos, and of e from the reaction ν + eν + e induced by 8B neutrinos, are presented in the cases of vacuum oscillations or MSW transitions for a large number of values of the relevant parameters. The possibilities to distinguish between the vacuum oscillation, the MSW adiabatic, and the MSW nonadiabatic transitions in the future solar neutrino experiments are discussed.  相似文献

The Berry phase of mixed states, here neutrino oscillations, is calculated in an accelerating and rotating reference frame. It turns out to depend on the vacuum mixing angle, the mass-squared difference and on the coupling between the momentum of the neutrino and the spinorial connection. Berry's phase for solar neutrinos and its geometrical aspects are also discussed. Received: 15 December 1999 / Revised version: 9 February 2000 / Published online: 18 May 2000  相似文献

Solar neutrino experiments were originally conceived as a way to demonstrate that nuclear reactions are responsible for energy generation in stars. When solar neutrinos were first detected the measured flux was much less than what solar models predicted. The Solar Neutrino Problem thus came to be and it persisted for over thirty years. It is now known that the deficit in solar neutrinos (of electron neutrino flavour) was due to neutrino oscillations and that matter effects are important. Solar neutrino experiments played a key part in these discoveries and in recent developments in neutrino physics. This report summarizes Pontecorvo Neutrino Physics School lectures that explored the physics of solar neutrinos and the experiments that detected them. The lectures also included a look forward to future solar neutrino experiments and their physics goals and these are also discussed here.  相似文献

We study the matter effects for solar neutrino oscillations in a general scheme, without any constraint on the number of sterile neutrinos and the mixing matrix elements, only assuming a realistic hierarchy of neutrino squared-mass differences in which the smallest squared-mass difference is effective in solar neutrino oscillations. The validity of the analytic results is illustrated with a numerical solution of the evolution equation in the simplest case of four-neutrino mixing with the realistic matter density profile inside the Sun.  相似文献

We point out that for solar neutrino oscillations with the mass-squared difference of Deltam(2) approximately 10(-10)-10(-9) eV(2), i.e., in the so-called vacuum oscillation range, the solar matter effects are non-negligible, particularly for the low energy pp neutrinos. One consequence of this is that the values of the mixing angle straight theta and pi/2-straight theta are not equivalent, making it necessary to consider the entire physical range of the mixing angle 0相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the evolution operator and the transition probabilities expressed as functions of the vacuum mass squared differences, the vacuum mixing angles, and the matter density parameter for three flavor neutrino oscillations in matter of varying density in the plane wave approximation. The applications of this to neutrino oscillations in a model of the earth's matter density profile, step function matter density profiles, constant matter density profiles, linear matter density profiles, and finally in a model of the sun's matter density profile are discussed. We show that for matter density profiles which do not fluctuate too much, the total evolution operator consisting of n operators can be replaced by one single evolution operator in the semi-classical approximation.
