Rotational isomerism between the E and Z forms of o-substituted benzo-N-methyl hydroxamic acids in strong acid

The $\text{E}$∠$\text{Z}$ equilibrium of the cations of benzo hydroxamic acids, in mineral acid, was studied utilizing ¹H NMR spectroscopy, NOEDS and MNDO claculations     

Boat-chair conformational preference of exo, exo-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid

The ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectra of $\text{exo}$, $\text{exo}$-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid, 3, in DMSO-d₆ or alkaline D₂O, clearly show that it exists in a $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$-conformation with $\text{equatorial}$ carboxyl groups, thus being the first case of $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$ preference of a bicyclo[3.3.1] nonan-9-one due to the presence of $\text{exo}$,$\text{exo}$-2,4- substituents.     

Diastereoselective synthesis of N-acetyl-D,L-acosamine and N-benzoyl-D,L-ristosamine

N-Acyl derivatives of $\text{D}$,$\text{L}$-acosamine and $\text{D}$,$\text{L}$-ristosamine were synthesized with high stereo selectivity utilizing intramolecular Michael addition of γ- and δ-carbomoyloxy-α,β-unsaturated esters.     

Peptides containing β-turns I-- cyclo-(gly-l-cys-gly)3 triply bridged by 1,3,5-tris-(thiomethyl)benzene

Reaction of $\text{cyclo}$-(Gly-$\text{L}$-Cys-Gly)₃ with 1,3,5-$\text{tris}$-bromomethylbenzene yields a $\text{tris}$ thioether of the cyclic nonapeptide in 28% yield. Both ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra are consistent with a molecule of 3-fold symmetry; the temperature dependences of chemical shifts of the amide hydrogens are consistent with a structure composed of three β-turns.

The nitration of $\text{p}$-cresol by nitric acid in aqueous sulphuric acid involves ~40% $\text{ipso}$-substitution at C^Me. The 4-methyl-4-nitrocyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one (I) formed undergoes an acid-catalysed rearrangement to 4-methyl-2-nitrophenol.     

Perfluoro-n-propylbromine(V) tetrafluoride

Perfluoro-$\text{n}$-propylbromine(V) tetrafluoride has been prepared by fluorination of perfluoro-$\text{n}$-propyl bromide at 0°C with elemental fluorine. It has been characterized by ¹⁹FNMR, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis.     

Steroidal antifeedants from the dorid nudibranch Aldisasanguineacooperi

Two steroids, 3-oxo-chol-4-ene-24-oic acid ($\text{2}$) andi ts unsaturated analog $\text{4}$ have been isolated from the dorid nudibranch $\text{Aldisa}$$\text{sanguinea}$$\text{cooperi}$, and the acid $\text{2}$ has been shown to have antifeedant properties.     

Isolation ofΔ9(11)-sterols from the sea cucumber psolusfabricii. Implications for holothurin biosynthesis

- 14α-Methyl-5α-cholest-9(11)-en-3β-ol ($\text{2}$) and 4α,14α-dimethyl-5α-cholest-9(11)-en-3β-ol ($\text{3}$) have been isolated from the sea cucumber $\text{Psolus}$$\text{fabricii}$ and characterised by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and mass spectrometry. Lanost-9(11)-en-3β-ol ($\text{4}$) has also been tentatively identified. The relevance of this series of Δ⁹⁽¹¹⁾-sterols to holothurin biosynthesis is briefly discussed.     

[2+2] Cycloaddition of benzyne to cis,trans- and cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene

The relative rates of formation of $\text{cis}$ and $\text{trans}$ [2+2]cycloadducts of benzyne to $\text{cis}$, $\text{trans}$- and $\text{cis}$, $\text{cis}$-1,5-cyclooctadiene, $\text{trans}$- and $\text{cis}$-cyclooctene are discussed and properties of the adducts (e.g., their unusual hydrogenation) are described.     

Stereoselective synthesis of 1,8- and 1,5-diketo-trans-syn-trans-perhydroanthracenes

A stereOselective conversion of 1,8- and 1,5-diethoxy-9,10-anthraquinone to 1,8- and 1,5-diketo-$\text{trans}$-$\text{syn}$-$\text{trans}$-perhydroanthracenes by successive sodium borohydride, metal-ammonia, and catalytic reductions is described.     

Solvolytic behavior of p-dimethylamino-α-bromostyrene in water solutions

Nmr and UV studies show that $\text{p}$-dimethylamino-$\text{α}$-bromostyrene, I, undergoes S_Nl reaction in H₂O and HClO₄ (^kS_Nl = 6 × 10^?1sec.^?1 at 25°). The vinyl cation has an extraordinary selectivity for capture by aromatic amines relative to H₂O, including I itself to give the dimer II.

A chloro-substituted derivative was prepared from chlorophyll $\text{a}$′. The derivative was shown to be δ-chloro-methyl pheophorbide $\text{a}$ by UV/VIS, MS and ′H NMR.     

Synthesis and absolute configuration of +-lineatin,the pheromone of trypodendronlineatum

A new synthesis of (±), (+)- and (-)-lineatin (3,3,7-trimethyl-2, 9-dioxatricyclo [3.3.1.0^4,7] nonane, $\text{1}$) was achieved. The stereochemistry of (+)-lineatin was established as 1$\text{R}$, 4$\text{S}$, 5$\text{R}$, 7$\text{R}$ by an X-ray crystallographic analysis of an intermediate $\text{1}$$\text{5}$.

Preparation of halo-F-methanes via potassium fluoride-halogen cleavage of halo-F-methylphosphonium salts

Treatment of halo-$\text{F}$-methylphosphonium salts with potassium fluoride and halogen (I₂, Br₂, ICl, IBr) gives modest yields of halo-$\text{F}$-methanes. This method of preparation augments the classical Hunsdiecker approach to these materials.
