A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate under zero pressure gradient (ZPG) has been carried out. The evolution of several passive scalars with both isoscalar and isoflux wall boundary condition are computed during the simulation. The Navier–Stokes equations as well as the scalar transport equation are solved using a fully spectral method. The highest Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity U and momentum thickness θ is Reθ=830, and the molecular Prandtl numbers are 0.2, 0.71 and 2. To the authors’ knowledge, this Reynolds number is to date the highest with such a variety of scalars. A large number of turbulence statistics for both flow and scalar fields are obtained and compared when possible to existing experimental and numerical simulations at comparable Reynolds number. The main focus of the present paper is on the statistical behaviour of the scalars in the outer region of the boundary layer, distinctly different from the channel-flow simulations. Agreements as well as discrepancies are discussed while the influence of the molecular Prandtl number and wall boundary conditions is also highlighted. A Pr scaling for various quantities is proposed in outer scalings. In addition, spanwise two-point correlation and instantaneous fields are employed to investigate the near-wall streak spacing and the coherence between the velocity and the scalar fields. Probability density functions (PDF) and joint probability density functions (JPDF) are shown to identify the intermittency both near the wall and in the outer region of the boundary layer. The present simulation data will be available online for the research community.  相似文献

We perform DNS of passive scalar transport in low Reynolds number turbulent channel flow at Schmidt numbers up to Sc = 49. The high resolutions required to resolve the scalar concentration fields at such Schmidt numbers are achieved by a hierarchical algorithm in which only the scalar fields are solved on the grid dictated by the Batchelor scale. The velocity fields are solved on coarser grids and prolonged by a conservative interpolation to the fine-grid.

The trends observed so far at lower Schmidt numbers Sc  10 are confirmed, i.e. the mean scalar gradient steepens at the wall with increasing Schmidt number, the peaks of turbulent quantities increase and move towards the wall. The instantaneous scalar fields show a dramatic change. Observable structures get longer and thinner which is connected with the occurrence of steeper gradients, but the wall concentrations penetrate less deeply into the plateau in the core of the channel.

Our data shows that the thickness of the conductive sublayer, as defined by the intersection point of the linear with the logarithmic asymptote scales with Sc−0.29. With this information it is possible to derive an expression for the dimensionless transfer coefficient K+ which is only dependent on Sc and Reτ. This expression is in full accordance to previous results which demonstrates that the thickness of the conductive sublayer is the dominating quantity for the mean scalar profile.  相似文献

Turbulent mixing takes an important role in chemical engineering, especially when the chemical reaction is fast compared to the mixing time. In this context a detailed knowledge of the flow field, the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and its dissipation rate is important, as these quantities are used for many mixing models. For this reason we conduct a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a confined impinging jet reactor (CIJR) at Re = 500 and Sc = 1. The data is compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and the basic flow features match between simulation and experiment. The DNS data is analysed and it is shown that the flow is dominated by a stable vortex in the main mixing duct. High intensities of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation are found in the impingement zone which decrease rapidly towards the exit of the CIJR. In the whole CIJR the turbulence is not in equilibrium. The strong mixing in the impingement zone leads to a rapid development of a monomodal PDF. Due to the special properties of the flow field, a bimodal PDF is generated in cross-sections downstream the impingement zone, that slowly relaxes under relaminarising conditions. The time required for meso-mixing is dominating the overall mixing performance.  相似文献

The jet in crossflow is a configuration of highest theoretical and practical importance, in which the turbulent mixing plays a major role. High-resolution measurements using Particle Image Velocimetry combined with Laser Induced Fluorescence have been conducted and used to validate simulations ranging from simple steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes to sophisticated large-eddy simulation. The reasons for the erratic behavior of steady-state simulations in the given case, in which large-scale structures dominate the turbulent mixing, have been discussed. The analysis of intermittency proved to be an appropriate framework to account for the influence of these flow structures on the jet in crossflow, contributing to the explanation of the poor performance of the steady-state simulations.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical analysis of a turbulent wall jet on the heat transfer downstream of a non-confined backward-facing step are presented. Several configurations are studied to analyse the influence of the upstream flow and the height of the step. An infrared camera and a hot wire were used to visualize a temperature map and measure the instantaneous velocity, respectively. The main objective was to visualize and compare both the fluid flow and the heat transfer, by studying the skin friction coefficient Cf and the Nusselt number Nud, respectively. The latter is obtained by the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient, evaluated by inverse method. Both experimental data and numerical approach provide good agreement regarding the flow structure and thermal data for measuring the position and the value of characteristics scales in the recirculation zone. A correlation between the maximum heat transfer Numax and the maximum Reynolds number Remax is presented. Similarities and differences are highlighted in the paper compared to confined configurations.  相似文献

The propagation of a passive admixture from a local instantaneous source in a turbulent mixing zone in a stable stratified fluid (two-dimensional problem) is simulated numerically. The location of the source does not coincide with the center of the turbulent zone. The calculation results indicate that the average admixture concentration distribution depends significantly on the initial data. The location of the maximum concentration in homogeneous and linearly stratified fluid is fairly slowly displaced toward the center of the zone. Calculations in a pycnocline show that situations are possible when the propagation of a passive admixture is largely determined by a convective flow generated by the turbulent mixing zone.  相似文献

In this work, an experimental study of a jet issuing in cross flow is reported. Support is offered to a theory on the origin of Karman-like vortices, in the wake of jets issuing in boundary layers. Further, a coherent structure with strong contribution to the energetics of the flow field is identified here. This structure has not been reported earlier, according to the present authors' knowledge, and it is shown to be related to engulfment of external fluid at the bottom of the jet, and to interesting stochastic and spectral characteristics of the flow field. Three-dimensional plots of the coherent quantities, based on experimental data, reveal a double-helical morphology of the coherent structure. The same morphology has recently been proposed for the far field of jets issuing in stagnant fluid (i.e., without cross flow). The results of this study are expected to support theoretical and numerical work on jets issuing in cross flow.

The design and operational characteristics of a 12-sensor hot wire probe for three-dimensional velocity–vorticity measurements in turbulent flow fields is described and discussed. The performance of the probe is investigated in comparison with X-sensor probe measurements in the near field of a rectangular turbulent jet with aspect ratio 6. Measurements have been conducted at Reynolds number Re D = 21,000 at nozzle distances of x/D = 1, 3, 6 and 11, where D is the width of the nozzle. The results obtained with the 12-sensor probe compare well to the results of the X-sensor probe. Distributions of mean and fluctuating velocity–vorticity fields are presented and discussed. Among the results the most prominent is the experimental confirmation of the high levels of fluctuating vorticity in the shear layers.  相似文献

Flow visualization and LDV measurements are performed on laminar flow in a helical square duct with finite pitch. The experimental observations are compared to results of numerical calculations employing the finite-volume method and assuming a fully developed flow. Good agreement is found between measured and computed velocity profiles. This suggests that the physical velocity components used in the numerical calculations are suitable to describe the flow. It is further demonstrated that the contravariant velocity components employed by some authors may lead to results that are difficult to interpret. Two stable solution branches are detected in the numerical calculations. For Reynolds numbers between the stable branches, unsteady and fully developed computations predict an oscillating flow between a two-vortex and a four-vortex structure. In the experiments, the flow normally retained a stable two-vortex structure in the numerically predicted unstable regime. However, by disturbing the flow at the duct inlet, a four-vortex flow that showed similarities to the computed flow could occasionally be obtained. For Reynolds numbers above 600, unsteady flow behavior was observed both experimentally and numerically, which might be an early sign of transition. In the experiments, Gdrtler-like extra vortices emerged spontaneously from the outer wall without disturbing the flow at the inlet. The same phenomenon was observed in the numerical calculations, assuming an unsteady and fully developed flow, but the extra vortices appeared with a lower frequency than in the experiments.  相似文献

A numerical prediction is obtained for the mean pressure field in the similarity region of a plane turbulent jet. An algebraic stress model, which introduces non-isotropic relations for the Reynolds stress components, is used to close the mean momentum equation. The full two-dimensional form of the transport equations is retained and the resultant equation set solved elliptically. The numerical prediction simulates many of the characteristics of the pressure field measured by experimental studies. However, the overall level of the predicted field is lower than the experimental values. The level obtained for the mean pressure field depends strongly on the prediction for the transverse normal Reynolds stress component 〈u2u2〉. The pressure field is shown to represent a small negative contribution to the net strearnwise momentum balance.  相似文献

The paper presents average flow visualizations and measurements, obtained with the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, of a submerged rectangular free jet of air in the range of Reynolds numbers from Re = 35,300 to Re = 2200, where the Reynolds number is defined according to the hydraulic diameter of a rectangular slot of height H. According to the literature, just after the exit of the jet there is a zone of flow, called zone of flow establishment, containing the region of mixing fluid, at the border with the stagnant fluid, and the potential core, where velocity on the centerline maintains a value almost equal to the exit one. After this zone is present the zone of established flow or fully developed region. The goal of the paper is to show, with average PIV visualizations and measurements, that, before the zone of flow establishment is present a region of flow, never mentioned by the literature and called undisturbed region of flow, with a length, LU, which decreases with the increase of the Reynolds number. The main characteristics of the undisturbed region is the fact that the velocity profile maintains almost equal to the exit one, and can also be identified by a constant height of the average PIV visualizations, with length, LCH, or by a constant turbulence on the centerline, with length LCT. The average PIV velocity and turbulence measurements are compared to those performed with the Hot Film Anemometry (HFA) technique. The average PIV visualizations show that the region of constant height has a length LCH which increases from LCH = H at Re = 35,300 to LCH = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements on the centerline of the jet show that turbulence remains constant at the level of the exit for a length, LCT, which increases from LCT = H at Re = 35,300 to LCT = 45H at Re = 2200. The PIV measurements show that velocity remains constant at the exit level for a length, LU, which increases from LU = H at Re = 35,300 to LU = 6H at Re = 2200 and is called undisturbed region of flow. In turbulent flow the length LU is almost equal to the lengths of the regions of constant height, LCH, and constant turbulence, LCT. In laminar flow, Re = 2200, the length of the undisturbed region of flow, LU, is greater than the lengths of the regions of constant height and turbulence, LCT = LCH = 45H. The average PIV and HFA velocity measurements confirm that the length of potential core, LP, increases from LP = 45H at Re = 35,300 to LP = 78H at Re = 2200, and are compared to the previous experimental and theoretical results of the literature in the zone of mixing fluid and in the fully developed region with a good agreement.  相似文献

A fluidic oscillator can produce self-induced and self-sustaining oscillating jet by fluid supply without moving parts. This device has attracted research interest in heat and mass transfer enhancement in recent years. In the current study, a double-feedback fluidic oscillator was numerically investigated based on three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (3D-URANS) while the operating fluid is an incompressible flow. Then, the results were validated with experimental data by two-dimensional time-resolved particle image velocimetry (2D-TR-PIV) and thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) for the velocity and temperature field, respectively. A grid sensitivity study was done by comparison of instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields. Additionally, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method was used to find the phase information of the oscillating jet, and fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis was used to find the frequency of the oscillating jet to validate the numerical results. The effect of the working fluid was also studied. Finally, in order to determine the effect of the Reynolds number on heat transfer enhancement, the Q-criterion was calculated to provide detailed insight into the oscillating mechanism. The results show that the non-dimensional frequency of oscillation is independent of either the working fluid or mass flow rate. Additionally, for a given fluid, increasing Re causes strong vortices and increases the frequency of oscillation. However, the convection heat transfer did not change significantly when varying the mass flow rate because the convection velocity of vortices increases as the mass flow rate is enhanced. A comparison with a free jet reveals that the oscillating jet in a channel is useful in terms of covering a larger area.  相似文献

A model of noise generation in the mixing layer of a jet is proposed on the basis of the measurements of the acoustic radiation of a free jet by means of a microphone system, which makes it possible to determine the location of sources of sound at a given frequency, and hot-wire measurements of the velocity of the motion of vortices of given dimensions in the mixing layer. It is shown that the acoustic wave generation can be attributed to turbulence intermittence in the jet, that is, an unsteady motion of a region occupied by a “turbulent fluid”. As a result, an unsteady motion of the air ejected by the jet produces acoustic waves.  相似文献
