The present paper provides correlations of flow maldistribution parameters in air‐cooled heat exchangers. The flow field in the inlet header was obtained through the numerical solution of the governing partial differential equations including the conservation equations of mass and momentum in addition to the equations of the turbulence model. The results were obtained for different number of nozzles of 2–4, different inlet flow velocities of 1–2.5m/s and different nozzle geometries in addition to incorporation of a second header. The results are presented in terms of mass flow rate distributions in the tubes of the heat exchanger and their standard deviations. The results indicate that the inlet flow velocity has insignificant influence on maldistribution while the nozzle geometry shape has a slight effect. Also, the results indicate that reducing the nozzle diameter results in an increase in the flow maldistribution. A 25% increase is obtained in the standard deviation as a result of decreasing the diameter by 25%. Increasing the number of nozzles has a significant influence on the maldistribution. A reduction of 62.5% in the standard deviation of the mass flow rate inside the tubes is achieved by increasing the number of nozzles from 2 to 4. The results indicate that incorporating a second header results in a significant reduction in the flow maldistribution. A 50% decrease in the standard deviation is achieved as a result of incorporation of a second header of seven holes. It is also found that the hole‐diameter distribution at the exit of the second header has a slight influence on the flow maldistribution. Correlations of the flow maldistribution in terms of the investigated parameters are presented. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present study, the heat transfer coefficients of shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers were investigated experimentally. Three heat exchangers with different coil pitches were selected as test section for both parallel-flow and counter-flow configurations. All the required parameters like inlet and outlet temperatures of tube-side and shell-side fluids, flow rate of fluids, etc. were measured using appropriate instruments. Totally, 75 test runs were performed from which the tube-side and shell-side heat transfer coefficients were calculated. Empirical correlations were proposed for shell-side and tube-side. The calculated heat transfer coefficients of tube-side were also compared to the existing correlations for other boundary conditions and a reasonable agreement was observed.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of the mixed convection heat transfer from vertical helically coiled tubes in a cylindrical shell at various Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, various coil‐to‐tube diameter ratios and non‐dimensional coil pitches was carried out. The particular difference in this study compared with other similar studies is the boundary conditions for the helical coil. Most studies focus on constant wall temperature or constant heat flux, whereas in this study it was a fluid‐to‐fluid heat exchanger. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the tube diameter, coil pitch and shell‐side mass flow rate on shell‐side heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger. Different characteristic lengths were used in the Nusselt number calculations to determine which length best fits the data and finally it has been shown that the normalized length of the shell‐side of the heat exchanger reasonably demonstrates the desired relation. The thermal contact resistance is a principal parameter interfering with heat transfer in a fin–tube heat exchanger. However, the thermal contact resistance in the interface between tubes and fins has not been clearly investigated. The objective of the present study is to examine the thermal contact conductance for various fin–tube heat exchangers with tube diameter of 9.52 mm and to find a correlation between the thermal contact conductance and effective factors such as expansion ratio, fin type, fin spacing and hydrophilic coating. In this study, experiments have been conducted only to measure heat transfer rate between hot and cold water. To minimize heat loss to the ambient air by the natural convection fin–tube heat exchangers have been placed in an insulated vacuum chamber. Also, a numerical scheme has been employed to calculate the thermal contact conductance with the experimental data. As a result, a new correlation including the influences of expansion ratio, slit of fin and fin coating has been introduced, and the portion of each thermal resistance has been estimated in the fin–tube heat exchangers with 9.52 mm tube.  相似文献

The shell and tube heat exchangers constitute the single largest component of the heat exchanger family. Though a vast number of literature is available for their steady state analyses, the number of works on transient analysis are comparatively fewer. The present paper brings out the transient response of a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger neglecting wall heat capacitance. The model is constructed with a distributed parameter approach. Unlike a number of recent analyses the numerical technique is avoided and the path of double Laplace transform has been chosen instead. This gives a scope for a unique functional representation of the response which is useful for deciding the control strategies to be adopted. This strategy has been formulated for the parallel flow model using PID controllers.  相似文献

Refrigerant R-410a flow distribution is experimentally studied in a test section simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger having vertical headers with two pass configuration. Tubes are heated to yield a test section outlet superheat of 5 °C with inlet quality of 0.3. Mass flux is varied from 50 kg/m2 s to 70 kg/m2 s. Effects of inlet and outlet locations are investigated in a search for an optimum configuration. Results show that, significant liquid flows through bottom channels, and less liquid is supplied to top channels. As for the inlet location, better flow distribution (pressure drop as well) is obtained for top inlet as compared with middle inlet. As for the outlet location, top or bottom outlet is better than middle outlet. Correlations are developed for the fraction of liquid or gas taken off by downstream channel as a function of header gas Reynolds number at immediate upstream. The correlations may be used to predict the liquid or gas distribution in a parallel flow heat exchanger having vertical headers. A novel thermal performance evaluation method, which accounts for tube-side flow mal-distribution is proposed.  相似文献

In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics in dry surface conditions of a new type of heat exchanger, namely a helically coiled finned tube heat exchanger, is experimentally investigated. The test section, which is a helically coiled fined tube heat exchanger, consists of a shell and a helical coil unit. The helical coil unit consists of four concentric helically coiled tubes of different diameters. Each tube is constructed by bending straight copper tube into a helical coil. Aluminium crimped spiral fins with thickness of 0.5 mm and outer diameter of 28.25 mm are placed around the tube. The edge of fin at the inner diameter is corrugated. Ambient air is used as a working fluid in the shell side while hot water is used for the tube-side. The test runs are done at air mass flow rates ranging between 0.04 and 0.13 kg/s. The water mass flow rates are between 0.2 and 0.4 kg/s. The water temperatures are between 40 and 50°C. The effects of the inlet conditions of both working fluids flowing through the heat exchanger on the heat transfer coefficients are discussed. The air-side heat transfer coefficient presented in term of the Colburn J factor is proportional to inlet-water temperature and water mass flow rate. The heat exchanger effectiveness tends to increase with increasing water mass flow rate and also slightly increases with increasing inlet water temperature.  相似文献

Uniform distribution of fluids is crucial to obtain high performance in compact heat exchangers. Maldistribution has been studied by many authors, especially for parallel channels heat exchangers. But theoretical models and experimental studies for predicting flow maldistribution in offset strip fins exchangers are scarce. Offset strip fins, besides their higher thermal hydraulic performances, favour lateral distribution due to their geometry. In this work, an experimental investigation has been carried out for this type of heat exchanger. The experimental set-up consists in a flat vertical compact heat exchanger (1 m × 1 m area and 7.13 mm thickness) equipped with offset strip fins with a hydraulic diameter of 1.397 mm. Air and water are the working fluids. The flow rates of each phase in seven zones regularly distributed at the outlet have been measured as well as the pressures at the inlet, the outlet and two intermediate positions. These measurements were completed with visualisations using a high-speed camera.  相似文献

An experimental study of a double-pipe helical heat exchanger was performed. Two heat exchanger sizes and both parallel flow and counterflow configurations were tested. Flow rates in the inner tube and in the annulus were varied and temperature data recorded. Overall heat transfer coefficients were calculated and heat transfer coefficients in the inner tube and the annulus were determined using Wilson plots. Nusselt numbers were calculated for the inner tube and the annulus. The inner Nusselt number was compared to the literature values. Though the boundary conditions were different, a reasonable comparison was found. The Nusselt number in the annulus was compared to the numerical data. The experimental data fit well with the numerical for the larger heat exchanger. But, there were some differences between the numerical and experimental data for the smaller coil; however these differences may have been due to the nature of the Wilson plots. Overall, for the most part the results confirmed the validation of previous numerical work.  相似文献

In desalinization devices and some heat exchangers making use of low-quality heat energy, both wall temperatures and wall heat fluxes of the heated tubes are generally quite low; hence they cannot cause boiling in flooded tube-bundle evaporators with common large tube spacing. However, when the tube spacing is very small, the incipient boiling in restricted spaces can generate and results in higher heat transfer than that of pool boiling at the same heat flux. This study investigated experimentally the effects of tube spacing, positions of tubes and test pressures on the boiling heat transfer of water in restricted spaces of the compact in-line bundles consisting of smooth horizontal tubes. The experimental results show that tube spacing and tube position have significant effects on the boiling heat transfer in a compact tube bundle. There is an optimum tube spacing that provides the largest heat transfer coefficient at the same heat flux.  相似文献

More than ever before, dynamic investigation techniques are becoming widely used in the control systems, parameter implementation and state estimators. Indeed, dynamical models describing the response of process systems that are subject to disturbances play a vital role in controlling and optimising these systems. Recently developed in literature, the method of step response analysis provides a promising means towards solving some of the problems associated with the characterisation of transient response of heat exchangers. In Abdelghani-Idrissi et al. (Int J Heat Mass Transfer 44:3721–3730, 2001), authors present analytical expressions of fluids temperatures response time of counter-current heat exchanger when hot fluid step change is applied in the internal tube. This paper describes the extension of this technique to a coflow heat exchanger for which the exact solution of its mathematical model is unavailable.  相似文献

Tube inserts are used as heat transfer enhancement tool for both retrofit and new design of shell and tube heat exchangers. This paper discusses and reviews the characteristics and performance of twisted tapes. The theory and application are also addressed. Industrial case study was selected to illustrate the behaviour effect that the twisted tapes impose at various laminar, transition and turbulent flow regions. This effect was demonstrated by changing the inside tube diameter and twist ratio through evaluating selected exchanger design parameters such as: local heat transfer coefficient, friction factor and pressure drop. Testing the exponent powers for Re and Pr at both laminar and turbulent regions were carried out. General design considerations are outlined for the use of twisted tapes in shell and tube heat exchangers.  相似文献

Uniform flow distribution is critical to obtain high thermal performance in many heat and mass transfer devices. It especially plays an important role in a compact heat exchanger. In this paper, a two-phase flow distributor is proposed for the evaporator unit of the plate-fin heat exchanger to alleviate the phase maldistribution in the multiphase flow. Air and water mixture was adopted as two-phase medium and distributions into ten parallel channels were measured in detail. The results show that the proposed distributor can improve the two-phase flow distribution of the plate-fin heat exchanger.  相似文献

In the present study, a thermodynamic second-law analysis was performed to investigate the effects of different geometry and flow parameters on the air-cooled heat exchanger performance. For this purpose, the entropy generation due to heat transfer and pressure loss of internal and external flows of the air-cooled heat exchanger was calculated; and it was observed that the total entropy generation has a minimum at special tube-side Reynolds number. Also, it was seen that the increasing of the tube-side Reynolds number resulted in the rise of the irreversibility of the air-cooled heat exchanger. The results also showed when air-side Reynolds number decreased, the entropy generation rate of the external flow reduced. Finally, based on the computed results, a new correlation was developed to predict the optimum Reynolds number of the tube-side fluid flow.  相似文献

The influence of grooves in the U-turn areas for the multi-channel-plate heat exchangers (MCPHEs) is significant due to the friction and flow phenomena in this region. In this study, two types of MCPHE made of acrylic plates were tested: one with grooves in the U-turn area, one without. During this series of experiments, heat transfer rate, overall volumetric heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number and overall pressure drop (i.e., including the entrance and exit losses) were measured and calculated in order to understand the overall performance of these two different constructions of MCPHE. The experimental results show that the heat exchanger without grooves in the U-turn area possessed higher heat transfer performance and lower overall pressure drop.  相似文献

Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) is the most critical dynamic issue in the design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. This fluid-structure phenomenon may generate high amplitude vibration of tubes or structural parts, which leads to fretting wear between the tubes and supports, noise or even fatigue failure of internal components. The study of this phenomenon is more challenging if considered that two-phase crossflow exists in many shell-and-tube heat exchangers. In this framework, the analysis of the influence of void fraction and flow patterns on FIV is of particular interest. In fact, void fraction and flow patterns do affect the dynamic parameters involved in tube vibration and, hence, the current vibration mechanism. However, in spite of the importance of devices subjected to two-phase flow, FIV under these conditions have not been entirely understood. In this paper, the results of an extensive experimental campaign, aiming at validating the flow pattern maps found in open literature, are presented. For this purpose, a normal triangular (transversal pitch per diameter ratio of 1.26) tube bundle subjected to two-phase air - water vertical upward crossflow is used. Structural sensors are used to measure the tube dynamic responses and estimate parameters such as hydrodynamic mass and damping ratios, which are strongly dependent on flow conditions. Theoretical models and data previously published are compared with the present experimental results, showing good agreement.  相似文献

Erosion is one of the major problems in many industrial processes, and in particular, in heat exchangers. The effects of flow velocity and sand particle size on the rate of erosion in a typical shell‐and‐tube heat exchanger were investigated numerically using the Lagrangian particle‐tracking method. Erosion and penetration rates were obtained for sand particles of diameters ranging from 10 to 500 µm and for inlet flow velocities ranging from 0.197 to 2.95 m/s. A flow visualization experiment was conducted with the objective of verifying the accuracy of the continuous phase calculation procedure. Comparison with available experimental data of penetration rates was also conducted. These comparisons resulted in a good agreement. The results show that the location and number of eroded tubes depend mainly on the particle size and velocity magnitude at the header inlet. The rate of erosion depends exponentially on the velocity. The particle size shows negligible effect on the erosion rate at high velocity values and the large‐size particles show less erosion rates compared to the small‐size particles at low values of inlet flow velocities. The results indicated that the erosion and penetration rates are insignificant at the lower end of the velocity range. However, these rates were found to increase continuously with the increase of the inlet flow velocity for all particle sizes. The particle size creating the highest erosion rate was found to depend on the flow velocity range. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Quite a large quantity of waste energy is discharged into atmosphere with vapor/gas mixture. It exceeds more than 10% of the primary energy input in a plant. By developing heat exchangers resistant to the low-temperature corrosion, an efficient use of a large part of this energy can be provided. The intensity of moist air/cold water heat transfer has been experimentally determined in a semi-in-dustrial plant and given in the form of the criterion equation (diagram) with variations of inlet gas moisture, inlet gas Reynolds number, and water flow rates. This diagram enables technically reliable calculation of any heat exchanger consisting of a bundle of vertical tubes in a tube sheet.  相似文献

A simplified model of heat transfer was developed to investigate the thermal behavior of heat exchangers and stack plates of thermoacoustic devices. The model took advantage of previous results describing the thermal behavior of the thermoacoustic core and heat transfer in oscillating flow to study the performance of heat exchangers attached to the core. The configuration considered is a flat tube (with a working fluid flowing in the tube) of the thickness of the stack plate attached to both ends of the stack plate. Geometrical and operational parameters as well as thermophysical properties of the heat exchangers, transport fluids in the heat exchangers, stack plate and the thermoacoustic working fluid were organized into dimensionless groups that allowed accounting for their impact on the performance of the heat exchangers. Two types of thermal boundary conditions were considered: constant temperature and constant heat flux along the heat exchanger tubes. Numerical simulations were carried out with the model introduced in the paper. The temperature distributions and heat fluxes near the edge of the stack plate were found to be nonlinear. The influence of system parameters on the thermal performance of the heat exchangers was analyzed. This article is dedicated to Prof. D. An analysis of a crossflow plate-fin compact heat exchanger, accounting for the combined effect of two-dimensional longitudinal heat conduction through the exchanger wall and nonuniform inlet fluid flow distribution on both hot and cold fluid sides is carried out using a finite element method. Using the fluid flow maldistribution models, the exchanger effectiveness and its deterioration due to the combined effects of longitudinal heat conduction and flow nonuniformity are calculated for various design and operating conditions of the exchanger. It was found that the performance deteriorations are quite significant in some typical applications due to the combined effects of wall longitudinal heat conduction and inlet fluid flow nonuniformity on crossflow plate-fin heat exchanger.
