LSND reloaded     
In view of the recent result from the anti-neutrino run of MiniBooNE, we suggest to repeat the original Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment using Super-Kamiokande, doped with Gadolinium, as detector. Due to the more than 100 times larger detector mass offered by Super-Kamiokande, the neutrino source requires a proton beam power of less than 300 kW at a proton energy around a 1 GeV. A one year run of this setup can corroborate or refute both the LSND and MiniBooNE claims at more than 5σ   confidence level. If a signal is observed, the large size of Super-Kamiokande combined with its good ability to determine the position of an anti-neutrino event allows to establish the characteristic L/EL/E-dependence of oscillation.  相似文献

We investigate symmetries in Dirac and Majorana mass matrices of neutrinos in a three-generation scenario. We show that if we invokeL e +L μ-L τ x S 2R symmetry, one combination of right-handed neutrino states remains massless which can be interpreted as a sterile neutrino. Next we consider a SU2L x U(1)y x U(l)R gauge model and show how higher-dimensional operators can induce mixing between left- and right-handed states which explains solar, atmospheric and LSND experimental results.  相似文献

Implications of the neutrinoless double-beta (0) decay searches for the neutrino mass and mixing spectrum are discussed. We consider properties of the effective Majorana mass, m ee, relevant for 0 decay. We find predictions or limits for m ee in the three neutrino schemes which explain the atmospheric and solar neutrino data. We show how combined analysis of results from 0-decay searches, oscillation experiments as well as direct measurements of neutrino mass will allow to identify the spectrum. In this connection, several test equalities which relate m ee and the oscillation parameters in the context of certain neutrino spectra are suggested. Two issues are important for realization of the identification program: (i) high enough accuracy of determination of m ee which requires reliable knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements, and (ii) possibility to identify the mechanism of the 0 decay, in particular, to disentangle the decay due to exchange of the light Majorana neutrino and mechanisms related to exchange of heavy particles with m1/r nuclei.  相似文献

It is shown that the hypothesis of tachyonic neutrinos leads to the same oscillations effect as if they were usual massive particles. Therefore, the experimental evidence of neutrino oscillations does not distinguish between massive and tachyonic neutrinos. Thus, in view of the fact that the results of the direct neutrino mass measurements are not decisive, the question about the nature of neutrinos remains still open.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility of explaining the MiniBooNE anomaly using CPT-and Lorentz-symmetry-violating neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in a two-generation framework. We work with four non-zero CPT-violating parameters that allow for resonant enhancements in neutrino-antineutrino oscillation phenomena in vacuo which are suitably described in terms of charge conjugation eigenstates of the system. We study the relations among the flavor, charge conjugation and mass eigenbases of neutrino-antineutrino oscillations and examine the interplay between the available CPT-violating parameter space and possible resonance structures.  相似文献

We explore the dynamics of neutrinos in a vacuum dominated cosmology. First we show that such a geometry will induce a phase change in the eigenstates of a massive neutrino and we calculate the phase change. We also calculate the delay in the neutrino flight times in this geometry. Applying our results to the presently observed background vacuum energy density, we find that for neutrino sources further than 1.5 Gpc away both effects become non-trivial, being of the order of the standard relativistic corrections. Such sources are within the observable Hubble Deep Field. The results which are theoretically interesting are also potentially useful, in the future, as detection techniques improve. For example such effects on neutrinos from distant sources like supernovae could be used, in an independent method alternative to standard candles, to constrain the dark energy density and the deceleration parameter. The discussion is extended to investigate Caianiello's inertial or maximal acceleration (MA) effects of such a vacuum dominated spacetime on neutrino oscillations. Assuming that the MA phenomenon exists, we find that its form as generated by the presently observed vacuum energy density would still have little or no measurable effect on neutrino phase evolution, for neutrinos in the energy range of a few eV.  相似文献

We clarify the domain needed for the mixing angles in three flavor neutrino oscillations. By comparing the ranges of the transition probabilities as functions of the domains of the mixing angles, we show that it is necessary and sufficient to let all mixing angles be in . This holds irrespectively of any assumptions on the neutrino mass squared differences.  相似文献

This work extends the idea of using a cyclotron-based antineutrino source for purposes of neutrino physics.Long baseline experiments suffer from degeneracies and correlations between Θ_(23), δ_(CP) and the mass hierarchy.However, the combination of a superconducting cyclotron and a big liquid scintillator detector like JUNO in a medium baseline experiment, which does not depend on the mass hierarchy, may allow to determine whether the position of the mixing angle Θ_(23) is in the lower octant or the upper octant. Such an experiment would improve the precision of the Θ_(23) measurement to a degree which depends on the CP-phase.  相似文献
