Negative index materials are artificial structures whose refractive index has negative value over some frequency range. These materials were first investigated theoretically by Veselago in 1946 and were confirmed experimentally by Shelby, Smith, and Schultz in2001. Mathematically, the study of negative index materials faces two difficulties. Firstly,the equations describing the phenomenon have sign changing coefficients, hence the ellipticity and the compactness are lost in general. Secondly, the localized resonance, i.e.,the field explodes in some regions and remains bounded in some others as the loss goes to 0, might appear. In this survey, the author discusses recent mathematics progress in understanding properties of negative index materials and their applications. The topics are reflecting complementary media, superlensing and cloaking by using complementary media, cloaking a source via anomalous localized resonance, the limiting absorption principle and the well-posedness of the Helmholtz equation with sign changing coefficients.  相似文献

Among those three solutions we obtained, one is positive, one negative and one sign changing. Given the flexibility of choosing negative elastic parameters, we construct material structures that can induce two resonance phenomena, referred to as the elastodynamical resonances. They mimic the emerging plasmon/polariton resonance and anomalous localized resonance in optics for subwavelength particles. However, we study the peculiar resonance phenomena for linear elasticity beyond the subwavelength regime. It is shown that the resonance behaviors possess distinct characters, with some similar to the subwavelength resonances, but some sharply different due to the frequency effect. It is particularly noted that we construct a core–shell material structure that can induce anomalous localized resonance as well as cloaking phenomena beyond the quasistatic limit. The study is boiled down to analyzing the so-called elastic Neumann–Poincaré (N-P) operator in the frequency regime. We provide an in-depth analysis of the spectral properties of the N-P operator on a circular domain beyond the quasistatic approximation, and these results are of independent interest to the spectral theory of layer potential operators.  相似文献

In the literature on analyzing extremes, both generalized Pareto distributions and Pareto distributions are employed to infer the tail of a distribution with a known positive extreme value index. Similar studies exist for a known negative extreme value index. Intuitively, one should not employ the generalized Pareto distribution in the case of knowing the sign of the extreme value index. In this work, we show that fitting a generalized Pareto distribution is equivalent to the model in Hall (1982) in the case of a negative extreme value index, in both improving the rate of convergence and including the bias term of the asymptotic results of that reference. When the extreme value index is known to be positive, we show that fitting a generalized Pareto distribution may be preferred in some cases determined by a so-called second-order parameter and the extreme value index itself.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove the existence of ground state sign‐changing solutions for the following class of elliptic equation: where , and K(x) are positive continuous functions. Firstly, we obtain one ground state sign‐changing solution ub by using some new analytical skills and non‐Nehari manifold method. Furthermore, the energy of ub is strictly larger than twice that of the ground state solutions of Nehari type. We also establish the convergence property of ub as the parameter b↘0. The aim of this note is to investigate the existence of signed and sign‐changing solutions to the Kirchhoff type problem (0.1) where Ω is a bounded smooth domain in (N = 1,2,3), a,b > 0 and 2 < p < 2?, with 2?=+ if N = 1,2 and 2?=6 if N = 3. Using variational methods, we show that (0.1) possesses three solutions of mountain pass type (one positive, one negative and one sign‐changing) and infinitely many high‐energy sign‐changing solutions. Generation of bell-shaped localized wave solutions to nonlinear coupled equations is studied numerically. It is shown how predictions of the known exact traveling wave solutions may help in understanding and explanation of arising of localized wave solutions of permanent shape and velocity in numerical solution. It is found that just coupling gives rise to changing of the sign of the amplitude of the localized bell-shaped wave.  相似文献

In this paper, we study approximate cloaking of active devices for the Helmholtz equation in the whole space of dimension 2 or 3 using the scheme introduced by Kohn, Shen, Vogelius, and Weinstein. More precisely, we assess the degree of invisibility, determine the limit of the field inside the cloaked and cloaking regions, and show that the scheme is unstable with respect to the material parameters. As a consequence, we obtain some feasible properties of “perfect” cloaking. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this note, the authors establish a non-extinction result for the changing sign solution with negative initial energy by discussing a suitable differential inequality. The result gives an answer to the problem unsolved in Qu, Bai, Zheng (2014) [1]. Two examples are given in the paper to show the existence of the initial datum with negative initial energy.  相似文献

For a two-dimensional model of thermal scattering, inverse problems arising in the development of tools for cloaking material bodies on the basis of a mixed thermal cloaking strategy are considered. By applying the optimization approach, these problems are reduced to optimization ones in which the role of controls is played by variable parameters of the medium occupying the cloaking shell and by the heat flux through a boundary segment of the basic domain. The solvability of the direct and optimization problems is proved, and an optimality system is derived. Based on its analysis, sufficient conditions on the input data are established that ensure the uniqueness and stability of optimal solutions.  相似文献

We construct positive and sign changing multipeak solutions to the pure critical exponent problem in a bounded domain with a shrinking hole, having a peak which concentrates at some point inside the shrinking hole (i.e. outside the domain) and one or more peaks which concentrate at interior points of the domain. This article consists of study of anisotropic double phase problems with singular term and sign changing subcritical as well as critical nonlinearity. Seeking the help of well known Nehari manifold technique, we establish existence of at least two opposite sign energy solutions in the subcritical case and one negative energy solution in the critical case. The macroscopic failure of composite materials is preceded by complex multilevel processes accompanied by accumulation and localization of damaged centers and formation of a failure cluster. Therefore, the study of these mechanisms is one of the basic problems for the mechanics of modern composite materials used in aerospace engineering. The formation of a theory of the stable postcritical deformation of the work-softening media is considered. The pseudo-plastic deformation affected by structural damage of granular composites is investigated within the framework of the considered two-level structurally phenomenological model of heterogeneous media. The stable evolution of the interconnected processes is accompanied by stress redistributions, partial or complete unloading, and strain or damage localization that are one of the main causes of implementation of the postcritical deformation stage. The numerical calculation results of inelastic deformation and failure of the periodic unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites are presented under conditions of the displacement-controlled transverse proportional loading mode. The main mechanisms of the work-softening behavior for the indicated type of materials are described in the macro-homogeneous stress-strain states. Macroscopically, the failure of heterogeneous media as a result of postcritical deformation and the loss of stability of damage accumulation depends on the stiffness of the loading system. When a deformable body is fixed on the closed surface with sufficiently but not infinitely large coefficients of stiffness, it is possible to observe the equilibrium development of the localized volumes of work-softening and damage. The constitutive equations for the work-softening isotropic, transverse isotropic, and orthotropic media are presented. The effect of the loading system on the stability of deformation, damage accumulation, and failure under monotone and nonmonotone triaxial loading was studied. The growth of failure strains with increase in stiffness of the loading system and unequal resistance of heterogeneous body are registered and investigated. A preventive unloading method is offered for the mathematical modeling of the damage accumulation during the testing of the materials on the servo-controlled systems. The displacement-controlled mode is simulated by a series of soft loading and unloading cycles. The detected phenomenon of failure where the unloading leads to stress-strain diagrams with a negative slope of the descending branch was not found either in the displacement or stress-controlled monotone loading mode.Submitted to the 10th International Conference on Mechanics of Composite Materials, April 20–23, 1998, Riga, Latvia.Perm' State Technical University, Russia.
