The effect of dispersion on optical bistability

We generalize a previously derived master equation for resonant absorptive optical bistability to include non resonant or dispersive effects. We examine the consequences of dispersion in both the mean field and fluctuation behavior of optical bistability.     

Modified optical bistability in two-photon absorption

The effect of level degeneracy of the absorbing atoms on the transmission characteristic of a ring cavity is examined within the mean field approximation. Using a single-mode input field, the possibility of realising a form of tristable behaviour is discussed.     

Comparison of absorption dispersion and optical bistability behaviors between open and closed four-level tripod atomic systems

In this paper we investigate the optical properties of an open four-level tripod atomic system driven by an elliptically polarized probe field and compare its properties with the corresponding closed system. Our results reveal that absorption,dispersion, group velocity, and optical bistability of the probe field can be manipulated by adjusting the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field and cavity parameters, i.e., the atomic exit rate from cavity and atomic injection rates.     

高吸收ZnSe多晶无镜光学双稳的实验观测

本文对具高吸收的ZnSe多晶材料的增加吸收型光学双稳性进行了实验观测,发现在介质的吸收远高于过去提出的理论判据时,仍能获得双稳输出,并测定了阈值开关功率与光斑尺寸及样品厚度的关系.采用分层模型分析实验结果,定性地解释了实验现象.     

A dynamical model for the increasing absorption optical bistability

By phenomenological analysis with reference to Miller et al. [2a], a specific Hamiltonian for increasing absorption optically bistable systems is proposed and the corresponding coupled dynamical equations are derived.     

Emission spectra and intrinsic optical bistability in a two-level medium

Scattering of resonant radiation in a dense two-level medium is studied theoretically accounting for local field effects and renormalisation of the resonance frequency. Intrinsic optical bistability is viewed as switching between different spectral patterns of fluorescent light controlled by the incident field strength. Response spectra are calculated analytically for the entire hysteresis loop of atomic excitation. The equations to describe the non-linear interaction of an atomic ensemble with light are derived from the Bogolubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy for reduced single particle density matrices of atoms and quantised field modes and their correlation operators. The spectral power of scattered light with separated coherent and incoherent constituents is obtained straightforwardly within the hierarchy. The formula obtained for emission spectra can be used to distinguish between possible mechanisms suggested to produce intrinsic bistability in experiments.     

Low-temperature optical absorption spectra of hematoporphyrins

Low-temperature optical absorption spectra of both free base and metal complexes of hematoporphyrin have been obtained. Vibrational structure, inferred by others from MORD data, is observed here directly in bands III and IV of the free base. Structure is also observed in the β band of the Ni and Pd metallohematoporphyrins. Implications of these results on the presently accepted theory of porphyrin optical spectra are discussed.

Low threshold optical bistability with optical pumping

By use of circularly polarized light we have exploited optical pumping within the Zeeman sublevels of the ground state to obtain optical bistability in sodium vapours with low threshold power (around 1 mW) and a wide tuning range (>12 GHz). Experimental results are presented for different conditions of operation and compared to computer calculations, that include propagation effects and inhomogeneous broadening, based on a three-level atomic model that accounts for optical pumping.CEILAP, Buenos Aires, Argentina     

Increasing absorption optical bistability operating in the front surface layer of high absorption samples

The increasing absorption optical bistability in a bulk ZnSe sample with quite high absorption has been observed. Our experiments show that the bistability operates only in the front surface layer of sample and that the back layer of sample can be regarded as a linear absorber and heat sink.     

Piezooptical optical bistability

A glass fiber piezooptical optical bistability device is reported.Basing on pho-toelastic and strain effects of single-mode fiber,we have realized piezooptical modulation andperformed experiments of optical bistability.     

光栅光学双稳态

本文报道了一种光栅光学双稳态装置.利用改变一对对称光栅间相对位移,实现了对透过光强的周期性调制.将这样的系统作为传输部分,分别用He-Ne激光和普通白光完成了光学双稳实验.实验结果与理论分析相符.     

Fiber-ring laser with tunable optical bistability

The structure of combining two segments of erbium-doped fiber (EDF) together—one EDF acting as an amplifier and the other as an absorber—has a special gain characteristic curve which has a maximum gain with an increase in the input signal power. This special gain characteristic curve can lead to an optical bistability (OB) phenomenon in a fiber-ring laser employing an EDF of this structure. By adjusting the pump light power injected into the second segment of the EDF, we can change the behavior of the absorber and can, therefore, control the range of the bistability region. A method is proposed to calculate the tunable optical bistability, and the calculation result is in accordance with our experiment.     

Influence of nonlinear absorption effects on optical bistability in semiconductor ring resonators

We present a theoretical investigation of optical bistability in a nonlinear semiconductor ring resonator, by taking into account the two-photon absorption and the free-carrier absorption. By solving the intensity equation within the ring resonator, a parametric formulation is obtained for describing the bistability relation between the input and the output intensities. Numerical results show that the nonlinear absorption effects can affect the critical points and domain of the optical bistability.     

InSb纳米晶体的生长和吸收光谱的研究

采用在惰性气体中蒸发的方法获得了沉积在ZnS基片上的InSb纳米晶体,其平均尺寸随惰性气体的压强增加而增大.从实验测量的室温吸收谱上看到,当纳米晶体的平均直径从27.9 nm减小到24.2nm再到21.4 nm时,其吸收边分别向高能方向移动了0.0151 eV和0.0145 eV.用有效质量近似模型计算了半导体纳米晶体的吸收边相对其体材料的移动,将理论计算与实验结果进行了比较.     

Supercontinuum spectra generation in the single-mode optical fibre with concave dispersion profile

In this paper, a new method is proposed to generate broad supercontinuum (SC) spectra in the single-mode optical fibre with concave dispersion profile. We numerically simulate pulse evolutions and discuss physics mechanism in detail for SC spectrum generation in the optical fibre with concave dispersion profile. Furthermore, general criteria are presented for specifying the shape of SC spectrum by introducing normalized parameters, which are related to the fibres and the initial pump pulses. The results show that the flat and broad SC spectra are indeed generated in our proposed optical fibre.     

Transients in optical bistability

In this paper we report on both a theoretical model for the transients in optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity and the corresponding experimental results. An analytical calculation permits to predict the shape of the transient curves and the order of magnitude of their time duration in the case of a slow sweep of the length of the cavity. The experiment, which uses the nonlinearity arising from a two-photon transition in rubidium, yields results in good agreement with the theoretical calculation.Work supported by the D.R.E.T.
