Wireless Technologies in Healthcare: Selected Papers from IEEE PIMRC 2011

The use of wireless technologies for medical device communication, health monitoring (at hospitals or homes) and mobile healthcare information delivery (i.e. m-Health) is one of the most rapidly growing areas in health-IT research today. The papers which appear in this special issue have been carefully selected from the best IEEE PIMRC 2011 conference. They are highlighting various challenging issues in using wireless technology for healthcare applications such as PHY & MAC innovations for wearable and implantable medical sensors, optical communication and location systems in hospital environments and interference mitigation issues.     

Guest Editorial: Selected Papers on Wireless and Mobility from IEEE INFOCOM

The three papers in this special section were originally presented at the IEEE INFOCOM 2006 conference in Barcelona. The augmented papers, which address issues in wireless networks and mobile computing, represent the high quality of research presented at the conference.

Transmission Power Control for IEEE 802.15.6 Body Area Networks

Energy consumption is an important issue in body area networks (BANs). In this letter, we propose an energy efficient transmission power control scheme for IEEE 802.15.6 BANs, which can improve energy efficiency by adaptively adjusting the transmit power in an on‐demand way to adapt to varying channel environments. Simulations are performed to evaluate the performance, and it is shown that the proposed power control scheme outperforms traditional ones in terms of energy efficiency without significant reliability degradation.

Smart Body Sensor Object Networking

This paper discusses smart body sensor objects(BSOs), including their networking and internetworking. Smartness can be incorporated into BSOs by embedding virtualization, predictive analytics, and proactive computing and communications capabilities. A few use cases including the relevant privacy and protocol requirements are also presented. General usage and deployment etiquette along with the relevant regulatory implications are then discussed.
