The recent observation of optical gain from silicon nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 opens an opportunity to develop a nanoscale silicon-based laser. However, the challenge remains to design and develop a laser
architecture using CMOS-compatible materials. In this paper we present two designs for a waveguide laser in which silicon
nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 are used as the optical gain media. One design employs a SiO2 membrane containing encapsulated Si nanocrystals. Preliminary calculations given here show that a highly resonant laser cavity
can be produced in a SiO2 membrane using sub-wavelength structures. This photonic crystal architecture, used to guide and contain the light, can be
combined with a gain medium of optically active Si nanocrystals synthesized in the SiO2 membrane using ion implantation/thermal annealing to produce a Si-based laser. The laser cavity dimensions can be matched
to the near-infrared wavelengths where optical gain has been observed from Si nanocrystals. The second design utilizes silicon
nanocrystals embedded in a distributed-feedback laser cavity fabricated in SiO2. Lasing action over a broad wavelength range centered at ∼770 nm should be possible in both of these configurations.

We demonstrate coherent coupling of the quadrupole S1/2D5/2 optical transition of a single trapped 40Ca+ ion to the standing wave field of a high-finesse cavity. The dependence of the coupling on temporal dynamics and spatial
variations of the intracavity field is investigated in detail. By precisely controlling the position of the ion in the cavity
standing wave field and by selectively exciting vibrational state-changing transitions the ion’s quantized vibration in the
trap is deterministically coupled to the cavity mode. We confirm coherent interaction of ion and cavity field by exciting
Rabi oscillations with short resonant laser pulses injected into the cavity, which is frequency-stabilized to the atomic transition.

The progress in the development of a sensor for the detection of trace air constituents to monitor spacecraft air quality
is reported. A continuous-wave (cw), external-cavity tunable diode laser centered at 1.55 μm is used to pump an optical cavity
absorption cell in cw-cavity ringdown spectroscopy (cw-CRDS). Preliminary results are presented that demonstrate the sensitivity,
selectivity and reproducibility of this method. Detection limits of 2.0 ppm for CO, 2.5 ppm for CO2, 1.8 ppm for H2O, 19.4 ppb for NH3, 7.9 ppb for HCN and 4.0 ppb for C2H2 are calculated.

Photonic-molecule modes of a cobweb-microstructure fiber allow efficient nonlinear optical spectral broadening of nanojoule
femtosecond light pulses. Spectral widths of approximately 200 nm are achieved at the output of a 6-cm sample of such a fiber
for 40-fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses with an energy of a few nanojoules coupled into photonic-molecule modes. Higher values
of the group index and a lower group-velocity dispersion, attainable with higher-order photonic-molecule modes, allow the
efficiency of spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulses to be increased relative to the efficiency of spectral broadening
in the fundamental photonic-molecule mode.

The analysis of compact CW diode-side-pumped grazing-incidence-geometry Nd:YVO4 laser designs is presented. An output power of 5 W (λ=1064 nm) was produced at 17 W of diode pump (conversion efficiency
of 30%) in single transverse TEM00 mode operation at high laser beam quality (Mx
2≈1.05 and My
2≈1.01). The resonator geometry was analyzed by applying generalized 4×4 matrix modeling of the spatial mode size, including
the impact on the laser operation of cavity astigmatism and a thermal lens in the laser slab. The simplicity and compactness
of the laser cavities allow their use for technological applications.

By using holographic shear interferometry, we have measured the thermal lens in a diode-pumped Yb:YAB crystal, under lasing
and non-lasing conditions, as a function of absorbed power. From these purely optical measurements we estimate the fractional
thermal loading and the thermal conductivity of Yb:YAB. Knowledge of these thermal parameters is essential for the optimisation
of Yb:YAB laser cavity designs.

Cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy is explained in terms of the transmission function of a rapidly swept interferometer,
and the integrated transmission is shown to be proportional to the cavity ringdown time. The technique is demonstrated on
the b1Σg
+-X3Σg
- (1,0) band in molecular oxygen at 687 nm using a tunable diode laser and a relative-ly high-Q optical cavity (finesse ≈4000).
A detection limit of 3×10-8 cm-1 s1/2 is achieved for a 0.8 cm-1 scanning range.

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, operation of a self-adaptive holographic laser with wavelength selection,
which uses Nd:YLF as the gain medium. The holographic laser was self-starting and, by virtue of the temporal dynamics in writing
the gain grating, passively Q-switched the cavity to produce pulses with 20–50 ns duration. A pulse energy of 184 mJ was obtained
from the system with beams having a TEM00 spatial profile. Single-longitudinal-mode operation was observed with near-transform-limited bandwidth.

We report a portable, all-solid-state, mid-infrared spectrometer for trace-gas analysis. The light source is a continuous-wave
optical parametric oscillator based on PPLN and pumped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm. The generated single-frequency idler
output covers the wavelength region between 2.35 and 3.75 μm. With its narrow line width, this light source is suitable for
precise trace-gas analysis with very high sensitivity. Using cavity leak-out spectroscopy we achieved a minimum detectable
absorption coefficient of 1.2×10-9 /cm (integration time: 16 s), corresponding, for example, to a detection limit of 300 parts per trillion ethane. This sensitivity
and the compact design make this trace-gas analyzer a promising tool for various in situ environmental and medical applications.

Sensitive absorption measurements in the near-infrared region using off-axis integrated-cavity-output spectroscopy 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A novel instrument that employs a high-finesse optical cavity as an absorption cell has been developed for sensitive measurements
of gas mixing ratios using near-infrared diode lasers and absorption-spectroscopy techniques. The instrument employs an off-axis
trajectory of the laser beam through the cell to yield an effective optical path length of several kilometers without significant
unwanted effects due to cavity resonances. As a result, a minimum detectable absorption of approximately 1.4×10-5 over an effective optical path of 4.2 km was obtained in a 1.1-Hz detection bandwidth to yield a detection sensitivity of
approximately 3.1×10-11 cm-1 Hz-1/2. The instrument has been used for sensitive measurements of CO, CH4, C2H2 and NH3.

By combining the technologies of ion trapping and cavity QED, we have achieved deterministic coupling of single ions to an
optical field. By Doppler cooling, the spread of the ion’s wavepacket was reduced to 42 nm, corresponding to Lamb–Dicke localization.
As an application, we have measured the three-dimensional structure of cavity eigenmodes with sub-wavelength precision. The
setup presented is suited for the controlled coherent processing of atomic and photonic quantum information. Examples include
the triggered generation of single photons and two-ion quantum gates.

Nanostructures on metal film surfaces have been written directly using a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The optical near-field
effects of the laser were investigated. Spherical silica particles (500–1000 nm in diameter) were placed on metal films. After
laser illumination with a single laser shot, nanoholes were obtained at the original position of the particles. The mechanism
for the formation of the nanostructure patterns was investigated and found to be the near-field optical resonance effect induced
by the particles on the surface. The size of the nanohole was studied as a function of laser fluence and silica particle size.
The experimental results show a good agreement with those of the relevant theoretical calculations of the near-field light
intensity distribution. The method of particle-enhanced laser irradiation allows the study of field enhancement effects as
well as its potentialapplications for nanolithography.

Optical bistable behavior in a quasi-waveguide containing non-linear film has been experimentally investigated in several
publications in the past years; however, the physical mechanism for optical bistability has not been theoretically explained.
In the present letter, we propose a theoretical model and successfully explain the observed optical bistability of both the
reflected light and the scattered light (m-lines) in a non-linear quasi-waveguide. The optical bistability in the non-linear quasi-waveguide is due to the scattering-type
wavevector mismatch mechanism.

The coherent combining of two Nd:YAG lasers using a Vernier–Michelson-type cavity has been demonstrated. The spectral behaviour
and the energetic performance are reported. We firstly show that the combining efficiency is not strongly spoilt by the gain
imbalance between the two amplifying media, and secondly, that despite the interferometric nature of the cavity, the Vernier–Michelson
laser can withstand environmental perturbations without alteration in output power.

Passive mode locking and saturable absorber Q-switching of neodymium lasers at 1.3 μm with PbS-doped phosphate glasses are
demonstrated. Q-switched pulses of 120 ns (0.1 μJ) in duration (energy) and the average output power of 3 mW from a quasi-cw
diode-pumped Nd3+:KGW laser and ultrashort pulses of a maximum of 250 μJ in energy and 150 ps in duration from a Nd3+:YAP laser were obtained. The bleaching decay rate of the samples was found to increase with the Quantum Dot’s size decreasing
due to the enhancement of quantum confinement effects for smaller dots and stronger overlapping of the electron and trap state
wave functions.

A new laser medium – Yb,Tm:KY(WO4)2 – for diode pumped solid state laser applications operating around 1.9 to 2.0 μm has been investigated and the main laser
characteristics are presented. Diode pumping at 981 nm and around 805 nm was realised. For 981-nm pumping, the excitation
occurs into Yb3+ ions followed by an energy transfer to Tm3+ions. A slope efficiency of 19% was realised. For pumping around 805 nm, the excitation occurs directly into the Tm3+ ions. Here a maximum slope efficiency of 52%, an optical efficiency of 40%, and output powers of more than 1 W were realised.
Using a birefringent quartz plate as an intracavity tuning element, the tunability of the Yb,Tm:KY(WO4)2 laser in the spectral range of 1.85–2.0 μm has been demonstrated. The possibility of laser operation in a microchip cavity
configuration for this material has also been shown.

Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in competition with optical breakdown in condensed matter is studied both
experimentally and numerically using water as an example. Strong random deflection and modulation of the supercontinuum under
tight focusing conditions were observed. They manifest the beginning of the filamentation process near the highly disordered
plasma created by optical breakdown at the geometrical focus.

Results are presented related to the use of two-photon dissociation of HgBr2 molecular vapor as a non-linear fast-opening passive mode locker of a long-pulse XeCl laser. A dye solution, with or without
scatterers, is also examined for comparison. Pulses with durations below our resolution limit of 400 ps and with a modulation
better than 90% are reported. The low threshold, the non-destruction and the broadband absorption causing photodissociation
make this molecule useful for laser pulse compression and decoupling for many lasers in the ultraviolet region.

Self-starting additive-pulse mode locking of a diode-pumped Nd:KGd(WO4)2 laser is demonstrated for the first time. An output power of 0.85 W is achieved with 2.3-ps pulses at a repetition frequency
of 76.5 MHz. The shortest pulse generated had a duration of 1.9 ps.

The time-resolved dynamics of plasma self-channeling and refractive index bulk modification in silica glasses were first observed
in situ using a high-intensity femtosecond (110 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm). Plasma channeling is induced in silica glass at an irradiation higher than an input intensity of 1.5×1012 W/cm2 and photoinduces either the refractive-index modification or optical crack modification. In the domain of refractive-index
modification, the lifetime of induced plasma self-channeling was 20 ps and the structural transition time for forming the
refractive-index change was 10 ps. In the domain of optical cracks, however, the lifetime of induced plasma formation was
30 ps and the structural transition time for forming the optical cracks was 40 ps. According to electron spin resonance spectroscopic
(ESP) measurement, it was found that the defect concentration of the SiE′ center increased significantly in the refractive index modification region. A maximum value of the refractive-index change
Δn was measured to be 1.6×10-2. The intensity profile of the output beam transmitted through the refractive-index modification showed that the bulk modification
produced a permanent optical waveguide.
