The large-deflection analysis and post-buckling behavior of laterally braced or unbraced slender beam-columns of symmetrical cross section subjected to end loads (forces and moments) with both ends partially restrained against rotation, including the effects of out-of-plumbness, are developed in a classical manner. The classical theory of the “Elastica” and the corresponding elliptical functions utilized herein are those presented previously by Aristizabal-Ochoa [1]. The proposed method can be used in the large-deflection analysis and post-buckling behavior of elastic slender beam-columns with rigid, semi-rigid, and simple flexural connections at both ends including linear and non-linear inelastic connections like those that suffer from flexural degradation (such as flexural cracking and elasto-plastic connections) or flexural stiffening. Only bending strains are considered in the proposed analysis. Results from the proposed method are theoretically exact from small to very large curvatures and transverse and longitudinal displacements for laterally braced or unbraced slender beam-columns under bending caused by end loads. The large-deflection analysis and post-buckling behavior of slender beam-columns with both supports partially restrained against rotation and with sway inhibited or uninhibited are complex problems requiring the simultaneous solution of two coupled non-linear equations with elliptical integrals whose unknowns are the limits of the integrals. The validity of the proposed method and equations are verified against solutions available in the technical literature. Three comprehensive examples are included that show the effects of linear and non-linear connections at both ends on the large-deflection analysis and post-buckling behavior of slender beam-columns.  相似文献

The main objective of this publication is to present an extended version of the Moment Distribution Method (MDM) for the stability and non-linear second-order analysis of indeterminate beams and framed structures made of beam-columns of symmetrical cross-section including the combined effects of shear and bending deformations, axial loads, and semi-rigid connections. The proposed method along each member has the following advantages: (1) it can be utilized in the first- and second-order analyses (including buckling analysis) of indeterminate beams and framed structures made of beam-columns with rigid, semi-rigid, and simple end connections; (2) the effects of semi-rigid connections are condensed into the bending stiffness and fixed-end moments without introducing additional degrees of freedom and equations of equilibrium; and (3) it is accurate, powerful, practical, versatile, and an excellent teaching tool. Analytical studies indicate that shear deformations, semi-rigid connections, and axial loads increase the lateral deflections and affect the internal moments and reactions of continuous beams and framed structures. These effects must be taken into account particularly in slender structures and when they are made of beam or columns with relatively low effective shear areas (like laced columns, columns with batten plates or with perforated cover plates, and columns with open webs) or with low shear stiffness (like short columns made of laminated composites with low shear modulus G when compared to their elastic modulus E) making the shear stiffness GAs of the same order of magnitude as EI/L2. These effects become even more significant when the external supports are not perfectly clamped. Three comprehensive examples are included that show the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

An analytical method and closed-form equations that evaluate the elastic stability and second-order response of 2D multi-column systems with initial geometric imperfections (i.e., columns with initial curvature or out-of-straightness and out-of-plumbness in the plane of bending) and semirigid connections subjected to eccentric axial loads and to a lateral load at the top floor level are derived in a classical manner. The proposed method is based on the Euler–Bernoulli theory and limited to 2D multi-column systems with sidesway uninhibited or partially inhibited subjected to gravity loads. The combined effects of initial imperfections and semirigid connections in the plane of bending are condensed into the proposed equations, which can also be used to evaluate the induced elastic bending moments and second-order deflections along each column member of a multi-column system as the lateral and axial loads are applied. The effects of torsion, shear and axial deformations along each column and out-of-plane deformations are not included. Three examples are presented in detail that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the corresponding closed form equations showing the importance of initial imperfections, semirigid connections and lateral bracing on the stability and second-order behavior of multi-column systems.  相似文献

In this paper, a boundary element method is developed for the nonlinear analysis of shear deformable beam-columns of arbitrary doubly symmetric simply or multiply connected constant cross-section, partially supported on tensionless three-parameter foundation, undergoing moderate large deflections under general boundary conditions. The beam-column is subjected to the combined action of arbitrarily distributed or concentrated transverse loading and bending moments in both directions as well as to axial loading. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Five boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, to the axial displacement and to two stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a BEM-based method. Application of the boundary element technique yields a system of nonlinear equations from which the transverse and axial displacements are computed by an iterative process. The evaluation of the shear deformation coefficients is accomplished from the aforementioned stress functions using only boundary integration. The proposed model takes into account the coupling effects of bending and shear deformations along the member as well as the shear forces along the span induced by the applied axial loading. Numerical examples are worked out to illustrate the efficiency, wherever possible, the accuracy and the range of applications of the developed method.  相似文献

Certain classes of slender structures of complex cross-section or fabricated from specialised materials can exhibit a bi-linear bending moment-curvature relationship that has a strong influence on their global structural behaviour. This condition may be encountered, for instance, in (a) non-linear elastic or inelastic post-buckling problems if the cross-section stiffness may be well approximated by a bi-linear model; (b) multi-layered structures such as stranded cables, power transmission lines, umbilical cables and flexible pipes where the drop in the bending stiffness is associated with an internal friction mechanism. This paper presents a mathematical formulation and an analytical solution for such slender structures with a bi-linear bending moment versus curvature constitutive behaviour and subjected to axial terminal forces. A set of five first-order non-linear ordinary differential equations are derived from considering geometrical compatibility, equilibrium of forces and moments and constitutive equations, with hinged boundary conditions prescribed at both ends, resulting a complex two-point boundary value problem. The variables are non-dimensionalised and solutions are developed for monotonic and unloading conditions. The results are presented in non-dimensional graphs for a range of critical curvatures and reductions in bending stiffness, and it is shown how these parameters affect the structure's post-buckling behaviour.  相似文献

The buckling of higher-order shear beam-columns is studied in the light of enriched continuum. We show the equivalence between the enriched kinematics of usual higher-order shear beam theories with the nonlocal and gradient nature of the associated constitutive law. These equivalences are useful for a hierarchical classification of usual beam theories comprising Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, Timoshenko and third-order shear beam theories. A consistent variationnally presentation is derived for all generic theories, leading to meaningful buckling solutions. It is shown that Timoshenko or some other higher-order shear theories can be considered as nonlocal or gradient Euler-Bernoulli theories. The buckling problem of a third-order shear beam-column is analytically studied and treated in the framework of gradient elasticity Timoshenko theory. Some different gradient elasticity Timoshenko models are presented at the end of the paper with available buckling solutions for repetitive structures and microstructured beams.  相似文献

In this paper the non-linear analysis of a composite Timoshenko beam with arbitrary variable cross section undergoing moderate large deflections under general boundary conditions is presented employing the analog equation method (AEM), a BEM-based method. The composite beam consists of materials in contact, each of which can surround a finite number of inclusions. The materials have different elasticity and shear moduli with same Poisson's ratio and are firmly bonded together. The beam is subjected in an arbitrarily concentrated or distributed variable axial loading, while the shear loading is applied at the shear center of the cross section, avoiding in this way the induction of a twisting moment. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Five boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, the axial displacement and to two stress functions and solved using the AEM. Application of the boundary element technique yields a system of non-linear equations from which the transverse and axial displacements are computed by an iterative process. The evaluation of the shear deformation coefficients is accomplished from the aforementioned stress functions using only boundary integration. Numerical examples are worked out to illustrate the efficiency, the accuracy, the range of applications of the developed method and the influence of the shear deformation effect.  相似文献

In this article, both thermal buckling and post-buckling of pinned–fixed beams resting on an elastic foundation are investigated. Based on the accurate geometrically non-linear theory for Euler–Bernoulli beams, considering both linear and non-linear elastic foundation effects, governing equations for large static deformations of the beam subjected to uniform temperature rise are derived. Due to the large deformation of the beam, the constraint forces of elastic foundation in both longitudinal and transverse directions are taken into account. The boundary value problem for the non-linear ordinary differential equations is solved effectively by using the shooting method. Characteristic curves of critical buckling temperature versus elastic foundation stiffness parameter corresponding to the first, the second, and the third buckling mode shapes are plotted. From the numerical results it can be found that the buckling load-elastic foundation stiffness curves have no intersection when the value of linear foundation stiffness parameter is less than 3000, which is different from the behaviors of symmetrically supported (pinned–pinned and fixed–fixed) beams. As we expect that the non-linear foundation stiffness parameter has no sharp influence on the critical buckling temperature and it has a slight effect on the post-buckling temperature compared with the linear one.  相似文献

Consideration is given to the dynamic response of a Timoshenko beam under repeated pulse loading. Starting with the basic dynamical equations for a rotating radial cantilever Timoshenko beam clamped at the hub in a centrifugal force field, a system of equations are derived for coupled axial and lateral motions which includes the transverse shear and rotary inertia effects, as well. The hyperbolic wave equation governing the axial motion is coupled with the flexural wave equation governing the lateral motion of the beam through the velocity-dependent skew-symmetric Coriolis force terms. In the analytical formulation, Rayleigh-Ritz method with a set of sinusoidal displacement shape functions is used to determine stiffness, mass and gyroscopic matrices of the system. The tip of the rotating beam is subjected to a periodic pulse load due to local rubbing against the outer case introducing Coulomb friction in the system. Transient response of the beam with the tip deforming due to rub is discussed in terms of the frequency shift and non-linear dynamic response of the rotating beam. Numerical results are presented for this vibro-impact problem of hard rub with varying coefficients of friction and the contact-load time. The effects of beam tip rub forces transmitted through the system are considered to analyze the conditions for dynamic stability of a rotating blade with intermittent rub.  相似文献

Interaction between reduced axial and lateral torsional buckling strengths of thin beam-columns of double symmetric sections with an edge crack at the middle is examined via Liapunov's second method. This is done in order to show how critical loads for pre-cracked thin-walled beam-columns can be obtained with out the rigour of meticulous solution of a set of differential equations. Having derived an asymptotic expression for the normalized energy release rates for the beam-column, a metric space and a Liapunov's Functional for a pre-cracked beam-column are proposed. By using Zubov's stability theorems and appropriate eigen value inequalities, expressions for reduced buckling strengths due to edge cracks are obtained. A crack reduction parameter k is proposed which is used to calculate reserve strengths for published lateral buckling strength equations. Results obtained using the proposed parameter are well in agreement with findings of earlier published works in the literature when the parameter is set to zero. The results also show that cracks cause loss of stiffness and can reduce the lateral buckling strengths of beam-columns considerably.  相似文献

Composite members composed of two materials joined by shear connection find widespread use in engineering infrastructure, in both traditional practice and innovative applications. Studies in the literature dating back nearly 60 years have elucidated the mechanics of the behaviour of these composite structural members in which the solution for the slip at the interface between the materials was determined by solving a linear differential equation. However, these solutions are based on a linear formulation of the strain-displacement relationship, and in some applications this relationship must be represented in non-linear form, so that the second order effects in the member can be quantified correctly. This paper presents such a study for a composite member with two materials, being typical of a steel-concrete composite beam in structural engineering. It quantifies the restraint of the member ends by longitudinal and rotational elastic springs, so that the axial tension developed is a function of the transverse loading, material properties, cross-sectional properties and the restraint stiffness. The problem is treated using minimisation of the total potential stored in the two members, the elastic shear connection at their interface, the restraints at the ends and the work done by the transverse forces, for which the differential equations for the deformations can be determined from routine variational calculus. The non-linear equation of equilibrium relating the external loading to the internal actions is stated in closed form by invoking the static and kinematic boundary conditions for the member. The solution is compared with closed form treatments derived elsewhere, and a representative member is analysed so that the influences of the non-linearity, end restraint stiffness and degree of partial shear interaction on its behaviour can be examined.  相似文献

This article presents the behavior of slender elastic rods subjected to axial terminal forces and self-weight. The mathematical formulation is presented, a solution is sought for a double-hinged boundary condition and the analysis is carried out for different values of non-dimensional weight. The formulation derives from geometrical compatibility, equilibrium of forces and moments and constitutive relations yielding a set of six first order non-linear ordinary differential equations with boundary conditions specified at both ends, which characterizes a complex two-point boundary value problem. Furthermore, a perturbation method is used to find the critical buckling loads and initial post-buckling solutions. A numerical integration scheme based on a three parameter shooting method is employed in the post-buckling solutions.  相似文献

A new nonlinear planar beam formulation with stretch and shear deformations is developed in this work to study equilibria of a beam under arbitrary end forces and moments. The slope angle and stretch strain of the centroid line, and shear strain of cross-sections, are chosen as dependent variables in this formulation, and end forces and moments can be either prescribed or resultant forces and moments due to constraints. Static equations of equilibria are derived from the principle of virtual work, which consist of one second-order ordinary differential equation and two algebraic equations. These equations are discretized using the finite difference method, and equilibria of the beam can be accurately calculated. For practical, geometrically nonlinear beam problems, stretch and shear strains are usually small, and a good approximate solution of the equations can be derived from the solution of the corresponding Euler–Bernoulli beam problem. The bending deformation of the beam is the only important one in a slender beam, and stretch and shear strains can be derived from it, which give a theoretical validation of the accuracy and applicability of the nonlinear Euler–Bernoulli beam formulation. Relations between end forces and moments and relative displacements of two ends of the beam can be easily calculated. This formulation is powerful in the study of buckling of beams with various boundary conditions under compression, and can be used to calculate post-buckling equilibria of beams. Higher-order buckling modes of a long slender beam that have complex configurations are also studied using this formulation.  相似文献

Aerospace structures with large aspect ratio, such as airplane wings, rotorcraft blades, wind turbine blades, and jet engine fan and compressor blades, are particularly susceptible to aeroelastic phenomena. Finite element analysis provides an effective and generalized method to model these structures; however, it is computationally expensive. Fortunately, the large aspect ratio of these structures is exploitable as these potential aeroelastically unstable structures can be modeled as cantilevered beams, drastically reducing computational time.In this paper, the non-linear equations of motion are derived for an inextensional, non-uniform cantilevered beam with a straight elastic axis. Along the elastic axis, the cross-sectional center of mass can be offset in both dimensions, and the principal bending and centroidal axes can each be rotated uniquely. The Galerkin method is used, permitting arbitrary and abrupt variations along the length that require no knowledge of the spatial derivatives of the beam properties. Additionally, these equations consistently retain all third-order non-linearities that account for flexural-flexural-torsional coupling and extend the validity of the equations for large deformations.Furthermore, linearly independent shape functions are substituted into these equations, providing an efficient method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the beam and to solve for time-varying deformation. This method is validated using finite element analysis and is extended to swept wings. Finally, the importance of retaining cubic terms, in addition to quadratic terms, for non-linear analysis is demonstrated for several examples.  相似文献

A study of the non-linear pre-buckling state and the bifurcation and initial post-buckling behaviour of infinitely long, cylindrical, elastic tubes subjected to bending, pressure and axial loads is presented. The collapse behaviour is analysed by determining both the limit load and the possibility and significance of axial wrinkling of the compressed region of the shell prior to the limit load.

In this article, post-buckling and non-linear bending analysis of functionally graded annular sector plates based on three dimensional theory of elasticity in conjunction with non-linear Green strain tensor is considered. In-plane normal compressive loads have been applied to either radial, circumferential, or all edges of annular sector plates. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of constituents while Poisson׳s ratio is assumed to be constant. The governing equations are developed based on the principle of minimum total potential energy and solved based on graded finite element method. Non-linear equilibrium equations are solved based on iterative Newton–Raphson method. The effects of material gradient exponent, different sector angles, thickness ratio, loading condition and two different boundary conditions on the post-buckling behavior of FGM annular sector plates have been investigated. Results denote that due to the stretching–bending coupling effects of the FGMs, the post-buckling behavior of movable simply supported FGM plates is not of the bifurcation-type buckling. Moreover, FGM annular sector plates subjected to uniaxial compression at radial edges show a non-linear bending behavior with unique and stable equilibrium paths following a flattening feature.  相似文献

We propose a wavelet method in the present study to analyze the large deflection bending and post-buckling problems of rods composed of non-linearly elastic materials, which are governed by a class of strong non-linear differential equations. This wavelet method is established based on a modified wavelet approximation of an interval bounded L2-function, which provides a new method for the large deflection bending and post-buckling problems of engineering structures. As an example, in this study, we considered the rod structures of non-linear materials that obey the Ludwick and the modified Ludwick constitutive laws. The numerical results for both large deflection bending and post-buckling problems are presented, illustrating the convergence and accuracy of the wavelet method. For the former, the wavelet solutions are more accurate than the finite element method and the shooting method embedded with the Euler method. For the latter, both bifurcation and limit loads can be easily and directly obtained by solving the extended systems. On the other hand, for the shooting method embedded with Runge–Kutta method, to obtain these values usually needs to choose a good starting value and repeat trial solutions many times, which can be a tough task.  相似文献
