A very straightforward approach was developed to synthesize pegylated thermoresponsive core‐shell nanoparticles in a minimum of steps, directly in water. It is based on RAFT‐controlled radical crosslinking copolymerization of N,N‐diethylacrylamide (DEAAm) and N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) in aqueous dispersion polymerization. Because DEAAm is water‐soluble and poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PDEAAm) exhibits a lower critical solution temperature at 32 °C, the initial medium was homogeneous, whereas the polymer formed a separate phase at the reaction temperature. The first macroRAFT agent was a surface‐active trithiocarbonate based on a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) block and a hydrophobic dodecyl chain. It was further extented with N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm) to target macroRAFT agents with increasing chain length. All macroRAFT agents provided excellent control over the aqueous dispersion homopolymerization of DEAAm. When they were used in the radical crosslinking copolymerization of DEAAm and MBA, the stability and size of the resulting gel particles were found to depend strongly on the chain length of the macroRAFT agent, on the concentrations of both the monomer and the crosslinker, and on the process (one step or two steps). The best‐suited experimental conditions to reach thermosensitive hydrogels with nanometric size and well‐defined surface properties were determined. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The evolution of the intracellular caspase family is crucial in cell apoptosis. To evaluate this process, a universal platform of in situ activation and monitoring of the evolution of intracellular caspase is designed. Using well-known gold nanostructure as a model of both nanocarrier and matter inducing the cell apoptosis for photothermal therapy, a nanoprobe is prepared by assembly of two kinds of dye-labelled peptides specific to upstream caspase-9 and downstream caspase-3 as the signal switch, and folic acid as a targeting moiety. The energy transfer from dyes to the gold nanocarrier at two surface plasmon resonance absorption wavelengths leads to their fluorescence quenching. Upon endocytosis of the nanoprobe to perform the therapy against cancer cells, the peptides are successively cleaved by intracellular caspase activation with the evolution from upstream to downstream, which lights up the fluorescence of the dyes sequentially, and can be used to quantify both caspase-9 and caspase-3 activities in cancer cells and to monitor their evolution in living mice. The recovered fluorescence could also be used to assess therapeutic efficiency. This work provides a novel powerful tool for studying the evolution of the intracellular caspase family and elucidating the biological roles of caspases in cancer cell apoptosis.  相似文献

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization has been utilized to polymerize 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) using a water-soluble macromolecular chain transfer agent based on poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethylphosphorylcholine) (PMPC). A detailed phase diagram has been elucidated for this aqueous dispersion polymerization formulation that reliably predicts the precise block compositions associated with well-defined particle morphologies (i.e., pure phases). Unlike the ad hoc approaches described in the literature, this strategy enables the facile, efficient, and reproducible preparation of diblock copolymer spheres, worms, or vesicles directly in concentrated aqueous solution. Chain extension of the highly hydrated zwitterionic PMPC block with HPMA in water at 70 °C produces a hydrophobic poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPMA) block, which drives in situ self-assembly to form well-defined diblock copolymer spheres, worms, or vesicles. The final particle morphology obtained at full monomer conversion is dictated by (i) the target degree of polymerization of the PHPMA block and (ii) the total solids concentration at which the HPMA polymerization is conducted. Moreover, if the targeted diblock copolymer composition corresponds to vesicle phase space at full monomer conversion, the in situ particle morphology evolves from spheres to worms to vesicles during the in situ polymerization of HPMA. In the case of PMPC(25)-PHPMA(400) particles, this systematic approach allows the direct, reproducible, and highly efficient preparation of either block copolymer vesicles at up to 25% solids or well-defined worms at 16-25% solids in aqueous solution.  相似文献

The in situ synthesis of the nano‐assemblies of the high molecular weight ferrocene‐containing block copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(4‐vinylbenzyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PEG‐b‐PVFC) via dispersion reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was discussed. Taking the advantage of the accelerated polymerization rate of the dispersion RAFT polymerization, the nano‐objects of the well‐defined PEG‐b‐PVFC diblock copolymer with the polymerization degree (DP) of the ferrocene‐containing PVFC block up to 300 were prepared. It was found that the morphology of the PEG‐b‐PVFC diblock copolymer nano‐assemblies was dependent on the DP of the PEG and PVFC blocks, and nanospheres favorably formed in the case of the long PEG block and vesicles containing a thick and porous membrane were formed in the case of the short PEG block and long PVFC block, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the dispersion RAFT polymerization is an effective way to prepare the high molecular weight ferrocene‐containing block copolymer with interesting morphologies. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of the ABA triblock copolymer nanoparticles of poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMA) by seeded RAFT polymerization is performed, and the effect of the introduced third poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) block on the size and morphology of the PDMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMA triblock copolymer nanoparticles is investigated. This seeded RAFT polymerization affords the in situ synthesis of the PDMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMA core‐corona nanoparticles, in which the middle solvophobic PS block forms the compacted core, and the first solvophilic PDMA block and the introduced third PDMA block form the solvated complex corona. During the seeded RAFT polymerization, the introduced third PDMA block extends, and the molecular weight of the PDMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMA triblock copolymer linearly increases with the monomer conversion. It is found that, the size of the PS core in the PDMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMA triblock copolymer core‐corona nanoparticles is almost equal to that in the precursor of the poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐block‐polystyrene diblock copolymer core‐corona nanoparticles and it keeps constant during the seeded RAFT polymerization, and whereas the introduction of the third PDMA block leads to a crowded complex corona on the PS core. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study is focused on the formation of polymer/silica nanocomposite particles prepared by the surfactant-free aqueous emulsion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) in the presence of 19 nm glycerol-functionalized aqueous silica nanoparticles using a cationic azo initiator at 60 °C. The TFEMA polymerization kinetics are monitored using 1H NMR spectroscopy, while postmortem TEM analysis confirms that the final nanocomposite particles possess a well-defined core–shell morphology. Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is used in conjunction with a stirrable reaction cell to monitor the evolution of the nanocomposite particle diameter, mean silica shell thickness, mean number of silica nanoparticles within the shell, silica aggregation efficiency and packing density during the TFEMA polymerization. Nucleation occurs after 10–15 min and the nascent particles quickly become swollen with TFEMA monomer, which leads to a relatively fast rate of polymerization. Additional surface area is created as these initial particles grow and anionic silica nanoparticles adsorb at the particle surface to maintain a relatively high surface coverage and hence ensure colloidal stability. At high TFEMA conversion, a contiguous silica shell is formed and essentially no further adsorption of silica nanoparticles occurs. A population balance model is introduced into the SAXS model to account for the gradual incorporation of the silica nanoparticles within the nanocomposite particles. The final PTFEMA/silica nanocomposite particles are obtained at 96% TFEMA conversion after 140 min, have a volume-average diameter of 216 ± 9 nm and contain approximately 274 silica nanoparticles within their outer shells; a silica aggregation efficiency of 75% can be achieved for such formulations.

SAXS is used to study the formation of polymer/silica nanocomposite particles prepared by surfactant-free aqueous emulsion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate in the presence of silica nanoparticles using a azo initiator at 60 °C.  相似文献

The formation mechanism of hollow micron-sized polystyrene (PS) particles having numerous dents on the surface, so-called cage-like particles, obtained from seeded dispersion polymerization (SDP) of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) with low molecular weight (MW) PS particles stabilized by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of hexadecane droplets was investigated. It was found that association of poly(2-ethylhexyl methacrylate) (PEHMA)/hexadecane phases which occurs due to the instability of the obtained composite particles followed by a diffusion of PS ellipsoidal particles into each other is the main process responsible for the production of such unique morphology. Time course monitoring of the SDP showed that diffusion of hexadecane and/or PS and/or PEHMA phase into PS/PEHMA/hexadecane composite particles through PS shell which happens based on Ostwald ripening is the main phenomenon which results in the formation of the dents on the surface of final particles. Moreover, the experimental results revealed that in this reaction system, the polymerization develops in a faster manner rather than the SDP employing seed particles having higher MWs. Furthermore, it was observed that particles with different surface morphologies can be produced by using different hydrocarbons. The elimination of small particles which are produced in addition to the cage-like ones via decreasing the concentration of the stabilizer was another interesting finding of this research. The acquired results showed that unstable SDP is expected to be a new concept in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) which employs instability of a dispersion for self-assembly of polymeric particles, and therefore, production of polymeric unique objects.  相似文献

Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of block copolymer through dispersion RAFT polymerization has been demonstrated to be a valid method to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. However, volatile solvents are generally involved in this preparation. Herein, the in situ synthesis of block copolymer nano‐objects of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polystyrene (PEG‐b‐PS) in the ionic liquid of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIN][PF6]) through the macro‐RAFT agent mediated dispersion polymerization is investigated. It is found that the dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the ionic liquid of [BMIN][PF6] runs faster than that in the alcoholic solvent, and the dispersion RAFT polymerization in the ionic liquid affords good control over the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer. The morphology of the in situ synthesized PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer nano‐objects, e.g., nanospheres and vesicles, in the ionic liquid is dependent on the polymerization degree of the solvophobic block and the concentration of the fed monomer, which is somewhat similar to those in alcoholic solvent. It is anticipated that the dispersion RAFT polymerization in ionic liquid broads a new way to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A new mechanism for mesostructure formation of ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) was investigated with in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements: thermally induced self-assembly. Unlike the well-established evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA), the structure formation for organic-organic self-assembly of an oligomeric resol precursor and the block-copolymer templates Pluronic P123 and F127 does not occur during evaporation but only by following a thermopolymerization step at temperatures above 100 °C. The systems investigated here were cubic (Im3m), orthorhombic Fmmm) and 2D-hexagonal (plane group p6mm) mesoporous carbon phases in confined environments, as thin films and within the pores of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs), respectively. The thin films were prepared by spin-coating mixtures of the resol precursor and the surfactants in ethanol followed by thermopolymerization of the precursor oligomers. The carbon phases within the pores of AAMs were made by imbibition of the latter solutions followed by solvent evaporation and thermopolymerization within the solid template. This thermopolymerization step was investigated in detail with in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS, for films) and in situ SAXS (for AAMs). It was found that the structural evolution strongly depends on the chosen temperature, which controls both the rate of the mesostructure formation and the spatial dimensions of the resulting mesophase. Therefore the process of structure formation differs significantly from the known EISA process and may rather be viewed as thermally induced self-assembly. The complete process of structure formation, template removal, and shrinkage during carbonization up to 1100 °C was monitored in this in situ SAXS study.  相似文献

Several water‐soluble polymers were used as templates for the in situ polymerization of pyrrole to determine their effect on the generation of nanosized polypyrrole (PPy) particles. The polymers used include: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), poly(vinyl butyral), polystyrene sulfonic acid, poly(ethylene‐alt‐maleic anhydride) (PEMA), poly(octadecene‐alt‐maleic anhydride), poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(vinyl butyral‐co‐vinyl alcohol‐co‐vinyl acetate), poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide), poly(ethylene oxide‐block‐propylene oxide), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and guar gum. The oxidative polymerization of pyrrole was carried out with FeCl3 as an oxidant. The morphology of PPy particles obtained after drying the resulting aqueous dispersions was examined by optical microscopy, and selected samples were further analyzed via atomic force microscopy. Among the template polymers, PVA was the most efficient in generating stable dispersions of PPy nanospheres in water, followed by PEO and PEMA. The average size of PPy nanospheres was in the range of 160 nm and found to depend on the molecular weight and concentration of PVA. Model reactions and kinetics of the polymerization reaction of pyrrole in PVA were carried out by hydrogen 1H NMR spectroscopy using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we demonstrate the formation of various 3D structures formed by a structural reorganization; a process not governed by self‐assembly. First, we packaged well‐defined diblocks, thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐b‐styrene) or P(NIPAM‐b‐STY), into spherical particles made in situ using a reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) nanoreactor technique in water to obtain high polymer solids. The resultant spheres reorganized through a temperature stimulus to form equilibrium and kinetically trapped structures; we denote this process as temperature directed morphology transformation (TDMT). Cylinder and vesicle structures, other more unusual loop, buckled sphere and cauliflower (via ultrasound) structures were observed below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM. These structures were produced efficiently, rapidly, reproducibly at high polymer solids and can be stored for years in solution or be freeze‐dried and rehydrated without a change in structure, which becomes important in biological applications. We generated the first phase diagram for the TDMT changes of thermoresponsive diblock micelles in concentrated solutions (> 7% polymer solids) produced from narrow molecular weight diblock copolymers (PDI ~ 1.1). The sphere/cylinder and cylinder/vesicle transition in the phase diagram were surprisingly found to be predominantly dictated by the length of the hydrophilic block, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tissue regeneration is a crucial self-renewal capability involving many complex biological processes. Although transgenic techniques and fluorescence immunohistochemical staining have promoted our understanding of tissue regeneration, simultaneous quantification and visualization of tissue regeneration processes is not easy to achieve. Herein, we developed a simple and quantitative method for the real-time and non-invasive observation of the process of tissue regeneration. The synthesized ratiometric aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) probe exhibits high selectivity and reversibility for pH responses, good ability to map lysosomal pH both in vitro and in vivo, good biocompatibility and excellent photostability. The caudal fin regeneration of a fish model (medaka larvae) was monitored by tracking the lysosomal pH change. It was found that the mean lysosomal pH is reduced during 24–48 hpa to promote the autophagic activity for cell debris degradation. Our research can quantify the changes in mean lysosomal pH and also exhibit its distribution during the caudal fin regeneration. We believe that the AIE-active lysosomal pH probe can also be potentially used for long-term tracking of various lysosome-involved biological processes, such as tracking the stress responses of tissue, tracking the inflammatory responses, and so on.

An AIE-active ratiometric probe for the first time achieved the long-term quantification of lysosomal pH during the medaka larva''s caudal fin regeneration.  相似文献

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been widely utilized as a powerful methodology for the preparation of various self-assembled AB diblock copolymer nano-objects in aqueous media. Moreover, it is well-documented that chain extension of AB diblock copolymer vesicles using a range of hydrophobic monomers via seeded RAFT aqueous emulsion polymerization produces framboidal ABC triblock copolymer vesicles with adjustable surface roughness owing to microphase separation between the two enthalpically incompatible hydrophobic blocks located within their membranes. However, the utilization of hydrophilic monomers for the chain extension of linear diblock copolymer vesicles has yet to be thoroughly explored; this omission is addressed for aqueous PISA formulations in the present study. Herein poly(glycerol monomethacrylate)-poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (G-H) vesicles were used as seeds for the RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA). Interestingly, this led to polymerization-induced disassembly (PIDA), with the initial precursor vesicles being converted into lower-order worms or spheres depending on the target mean degree of polymerization (DP) for the corona-forming POEGMA block. Moreover, construction of a pseudo-phase diagram revealed an unexpected copolymer concentration dependence for this PIDA formulation. Previously, we reported that PHPMA-based diblock copolymer nano-objects only exhibit thermoresponsive behavior over a relatively narrow range of compositions and DPs (see Warren et al., Macromolecules, 2018, 51, 8357–8371). However, introduction of the POEGMA coronal block produced thermoresponsive ABC triblock nano-objects even when the precursor G-H diblock copolymer vesicles proved to be thermally unresponsive. Thus, this new approach is expected to enable the rational design of new nano-objects with tunable composition, copolymer architectures and stimulus-responsive behavior.

Chain extension of linear AB diblock copolymer vesicles by seeded RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization using a hydrophilic monomer C leads to polymerization-induced disassembly to form lower-order thermoresponsive ABC triblock copolymer nano-objects.  相似文献

Extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness affects the drug resistance behavior of cancer cells, while multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1) on the cell membrane confers treatment resistance via actively transporting drugs out of cancer cells. However, the relationship between ECM stiffness and MRP1 functional activity in cancer cells remains elusive, mainly due to the technical challenge of in situ monitoring. Herein, we engineered in vitro cancer cell models using breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells) as the reprehensive cells on polyacrylamide (PA) gels with three stiffness, mimicking different developmental stages of cancer. We in situ characterized the functional activity of MRP1 and investigated the effect of ECM stiffness on MRP1 of cancer cells before and after vincristine treatment using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FcCOOH) as the redox mediator and endogenous glutathione (GSH) as the indicator. The SECM results show that the functional activity of MRP1 is enhanced with increasing ECM stiffness, and the MRP1-mediated vincristine efflux activity of MCF-7 cells is more affected by ECM stiffness than that of MDA-MB-231 cells. This work, for the first time, applied SECM to in situ and quantitatively monitor the functional activity of MRP1 in cancer cells in different tumor mechanical microenvironments, which could help to elucidate the mechanism of matrix stiffness-dependent drug resistance behavior in cancer cells.

SECM using FcCOOH as the redox mediator and endogenous GSH as the indicator was employed to investigate the effect of extracellular matrix stiffness on the functional activity of MRP1 in cancer cells in situ.  相似文献

Nature or synthetic systems that can self-assemble into biomimetic membranes and form compartments in aqueous solution have received extensive attention. However, these systems often have the problems of requiring complex processes or lacking of control in simulating lipid synthesis and membrane formation of cells. This paper demonstrates a conceptually new strategy that uses a photoligation chemistry to convert nonmembrane molecules to yield liposomes. Lysosphingomyelin (Lyso) and 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol derivatives (NBs) are used as precursors and the amphiphilic character of Lyso promotes the formation of mixed aggregates with NBs, bringing the lipid precursors into close proximity. Light irradiation triggers the conversion of NBs into reactive aldehyde intermediates, and the preassembly facilitates the efficient and specific ligation between aldehyde and Lyso amine over other biomolecules, thereby accelerating the synthesis of phospholipids and forming membrane compartments similar to natural lipids. The light-controllable transformation represents the use of an external energy stimulus to form a biomimetic phospholipid membrane, which has a wide range of applications in medicinal chemistry, synthetic biological and abiogenesis.

A photoligation chemistry was used to drive the formation of biomimetic membranes in situ. The preassembly of precursors promotes the synthesis of lipid, which is an important feature as a candidate for simulating natural membrane functions.  相似文献

Dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the alcohol/water mixture mediated with the brush macro‐RAFT agent of poly[poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether vinylphenyl‐co‐styrene] trithiocarbonate [P(mPEGV‐co‐St)‐TTC] with similar molecular weight but different chemical composition is investigated. Well‐controlled RAFT polymerization including an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous polymerization at almost complete monomer conversion is achieved. The molecular weight of the synthesized block copolymer increases linearly with the monomer conversion, and the polydispersity is relatively narrow (PDI < 1.3). The RAFT polymerization kinetics is dependent on the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agents, and those with high content of hydrophobic segment lead to fast RAFT polymerization. The growth of the block copolymer nano‐objects during the RAFT polymerization is explored, and various block copolymer nano‐objects such as nanospheres, worms, vesicles and large‐compound‐micelle‐like particles are prepared. The parameters such as the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agent, the chain length of the solvatophobic block, the concentration of the feeding monomer and the solvent character affecting the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects are investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The replacement of HgCl2/C with Au/C as a catalyst for acetylene hydrochlorination represents a significant reduction in the environmental impact of this industrial process. Under reaction conditions atomically dispersed cationic Au species are the catalytic active site, representing a large-scale application of heterogeneous single-site catalysts. While the metal nuclearity and oxidation state under operating conditions has been investigated in catalysts prepared from aqua regia and thiosulphate, limited studies have focused on the ligand environment surrounding the metal centre. We now report K-edge soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the Cl and S ligand species used to stabilise these isolated cationic Au centres in the harsh reaction conditions. We demonstrate the presence of three distinct Cl species in the materials; inorganic Cl, Au–Cl, and C–Cl and how these species evolve during reaction. Direct evidence of Au–S interactions is confirmed in catalysts prepared using thiosulfate precursors which show high stability towards reduction to inactive metal nanoparticles. This stability was clear during gas switching experiments, where exposure to C2H2 alone did not dramatically alter the Au electronic structure and consequently did not deactivate the thiosulfate catalyst.

In situ chlorine and sulphur XAS shows a dynamic ligand environment around cationic Au single-sites during acetylene hydrochlorination.  相似文献

Rising phenomena of aqueous solution meniscus were found for the silver electrode of a 5 MHz piezoelectric quartz crystal (PQC) partially immersed in Na2SO4, NaClO4, HClO4 and NaF aqueous solutions at oxygen reduction potentials, respectively. A detailed study revealed that a decrease in contact‐angle hysteresis (or a contact‐angle decrease) and a continued collection of the water product at the solid‐gas‐solution interface during oxygen reduction, rather than the electrocapillary effect and an agitation effect induced by the oscillation of PQC, are responsible for the meniscus‐rising phenomena. In addition, in situ determination of the immersed height of a partially immersed Ag electrode was studied on the basis of simultaneous measurements of the electroacoustic admittance and electrochemical impedance.  相似文献

The dispersion reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine in toluene in the presence of the polystyrene dithiobenzoate (PS‐CTA) macro‐RAFT agent with different chain length is discussed. The RAFT polymerization undergoes an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous one. The RAFT polymerization rate is dependent on the PS‐CTA chain length, and short PS‐CTA generally leads to fast RAFT polymerization. The dispersion RAFT polymerization induces the self‐assembly of the in situ synthesized polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) block copolymer into highly concentrated block copolymer nano‐objects. The PS‐CTA chain length exerts great influence on the particle nucleation and the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects. It is found, short PS‐CTA leads to fast particle nucleation and tends to produce large‐sized vesicles or large‐compound micelles, and long PS‐CTA leads to formation of small‐sized nanospheres. Comparison between the polymerization‐induced self‐assembly and self‐assembly of block copolymer in the block‐selective solvent is made, and the great difference between the two methods is demonstrated. The present study is anticipated to be useful to reveal the chain extension and the particle growth of block copolymer during the RAFT polymerization under dispersion condition. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One of the most successful approaches for balancing the high stability and activity of water oxidation in alkaline solutions is to use amorphous and crystalline heterostructures. However, due to the lack of direct evidence at the molecular level, the nano/micro processes of amorphous and crystalline heterostructure electrocatalysts, including self-reconstruction and reaction pathways, remain unknown. Herein, the Leidenfrost effect assisted electrospray approach combined with phase separation was used for the first time to create amorphous NiOx/crystalline α-Fe2O3 (a-NiOx/α-Fe2O3) nanowire arrays. The results of in situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that with the increase of the potential at the a-NiOx/α-Fe2O3 interface, a significant accumulation of OH can be observed. Combining with XAS spectra and DFT calculations, we believe that more OH adsorption on the Ni centers can facilitate Ni2+ deprotonation to achieve the high-valence oxidation of Ni4+ according to HSAB theory (Fe3+ serves as a strong Lewis acid). This result promotes the electrocatalysts to follow the lattice oxygen activation mechanism. This work, for the first time, offers direct spectroscopic evidence for deepening the fundamental understanding of the Lewis acid effect of Fe3+, and reveals the synergistic effect on water oxidation via the unique amorphous and crystalline heterostructures.

The amorphous NiOx/crystalline α-Fe2O3 heterojunctions were constructed and exhibited outstanding OER activities. Through the collaboration of multiple characterization techniques, the Lewis acid effect of Fe3+ was revealed at molecular level.  相似文献
