Free jets, and jets with tubular confinements, are investigated in the jet Reynolds number regime 80 Rej 1000 being of interest for micro-jet pumps, among other applications. For issuing the jets, conventional (single-hole) nozzles as well as dual-hole nozzles of a particular design are used. Both flow visualization and LDA measurement indicate that, in agreement with previous findings, the jets issuing from conventional nozzles remain laminar up to large distances from the orifice. Thus there is but little entrainment of ambient fluid, and the performance of conventional nozzles in micro-jet pumps is rather poor. The dual-hole nozzles, on the other hand, are found to enforce transition to turbulent flow near the orifices. As a result, the entrainment rate is considerably increased, and the performance of jet pumps is improved when the dual-hole nozzles are applied. The experimental data are found to be in fair agreement with predictions based on mass and momentum balances.

The flow of annular liquid jets at high Reynolds numbers is analysed by means of the finite element method and the full‐Newton iteration scheme. Results have been obtained for various values of the inner to the outer diameter ratio and for non‐zero surface tension, using extremely long meshes. The annular film moves far from the symmetry axis at low values of the Reynolds number. At higher Reynolds numbers, the film moves towards the axis of symmetry and appears close to very far downstream, forming a round jet. Asymptotic results for the radius of the resulting round jet are provided. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report some experiments undertaken to investigate the control of vortex shedding behind electrically heated cylinders at low Reynolds numbers owing to the heat input brought to the cylinder. In airflow, depending on the Reynolds number value, complete suppression or modification of the vortex shedding phenomenon can be achieved with increase of heat input. Experimental results suggest that this control could result of a slight change of the separation point location due to the increase of the dynamic viscosity of the fluid.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate flow characteristics of confined twin jets issuing from the lower surface and impinging normally on the upper surface. Pressure distributions on the impingement and confinement plates were obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from 30,000 to 50,000, nozzle-to-plate spacing (H/D) in the range of 0.5-4 and jet-to-jet spacing (L/D) in the range of 0.5-2. Smoke-wire technique was used to visualize the flow behavior. The effects of Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate spacing and jet-to-jet spacing on the flow structure are examined. The subatmospheric regions occur on both impingement and confinement plates at the nozzle-to-plate spacing up to 1 for all studied Reynolds numbers and jet-to-jet spacings in consideration. They lie nearly up to the same radial location at both surfaces and move radially outward from the stagnation points with increasing nozzle-to-plate spacing and jet-to-jet spacing. It is concluded that there exists a relation between the subatmospheric regions and peaks in heat transfer coefficients for low spacings in the impinging jets.

It has been observed by researchers in the past that vortex shedding behind circular cylinders can be altered, and in some cases suppressed, over a limited range of Reynolds numbers by proper placement of a second, much smaller, ‘control’ cylinder in the near wake of the main cylinder. Results are presented for numerical computations of some such situations. A stabilized finite element method is employed to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the primitive variables formulation. At low Reynolds numbers, for certain relative positions of the main and control cylinder, the vortex shedding from the main cylinder is completely suppressed. Excellent agreement is observed between the present computations and experimental findings of other researchers. In an effort to explain the mechanism of control of vortex shedding, the streamwise variation of the pressure coefficient close to the shear layer of the main cylinder is compared for various cases, with and without the control cylinder. In the cases where the vortex shedding is suppressed, it is observed that the control cylinder provides a local favorable pressure gradient in the wake region, thereby stabilizing the shear layer locally. The possibility of transverse galloping of a square cylinder at low Reynolds numbers (Re≤200, so that the flow is presumably laminar) is analysed. Transverse galloping is here considered as a one-degree-of-freedom oscillator subjected to fluid forces, which are described by using the quasi-steady hypothesis (time-averaged data are extracted from previous numerical simulations). Approximate solutions are obtained by means of the method of Krylov-Bogoliubov, with two major conclusions: (i) a square cylinder cannot gallop below a Reynolds number of 159 and (ii) in the range 159≤Re≤200 the response exhibits no hysteresis.

We visualized the wake structure of circular disks falling vertically in quiescent water. The evolution of the wake was shown to be similar to the flow patterns behind a fixed disk. The Reynolds number,Re = Ud/ν,is in the range of 40 200.With the ascension of Reynolds numbers,a regular bifurcation occurred at the first critical Reynolds number Re c 1,leading to a transition from an axisymmetric wake structure to a plane symmetric one;A Hopf bifurcation took place at the second critical Reynolds number Re c 2,as the wake structure became unsteady.Plane symmetry of the wake structure was first lost as periodic vortex shedding appeared, but recovered at higher Reynolds number. The difference between the two critical Reynolds numbers was found to be shape-dependent,as we compared our results for thin discs with those for other falling bodies, such as spheres and cones. This observation could be understood in terms of the instability mechanism of the vortical structure.

The flow structures in the near field of the unducted wake region behind a circular disc for annular flow at low Reynolds numbers were studied by smoke-wire flow visualization technique. A twisted-dual-wire was employed to perform the time evolving visualization. Three typical characteristic flow modes: Q-tip, open-top toroid, and closed toroid, were identified in the near disc region. For Reynolds number between 130 and 390, the Q-tip flow mode which subject to a periodic up-down oscillatory motion was observed. The open-top toroid mode which experiences the expelling vortex shedding was found for Reynolds number between 390 and 455. The free separation surface turns around and merges to the central axisymmetric axis to form the conventionally observed toroidal recirculation bubble for Reynolds number higher than 455. The closed toroid mode exhibits both expelling and shear-layer vortex sheddings. With the identified flow modes at low Reynolds numbers, the recirculation contours, recirculation length, and the shedding frequency in each mode were measured and discussed.List of symbols B.R. blockage ratio (=D 2 /D a 2 ) - D a outer diameter of annular jet, 30 mm - D diameter of circular disc, 20 mm - f frequency of vortex shedding, Hz - L r axial length of recirculation zone - R radius of circular disc, 10 mm - u a average exit velocity of annular jet - 0 stream function with value of zero - mass density of annular flow - u average axial velocity - r radial coordinate, originated from center of circular disk - r 0 radial coordinate of the boundary of the recirculation zone - Re a Reynolds number of annular jet based on the disc diameter - Z axial coordinate, originated from center of circular disk - w max maximum half-width of the recirculation zone - St Strouhal number (=fD/D a )  相似文献

We have investigated the spatial and temporal structure of certain cases of chaotic and organized vortex shedding in self-excited cylinder wakes at low Reynolds number (40–200) by extending hot-wire measurements to much larger downstream locations than our earlier measurements (Van Atta and Gharib, 1987) and performing concurrent smoke-wire flow visualizations. We describe here results for two cases in which chaotic vortex shedding is observed. The first is the single-vibration frequency locked-in case, in which the most highly disturbed regions of the vortex street, which produce chaotic spectra, are confined to compact spanwise-periodic propagating disturbed regions. The second is the multiple-vibration frequency case in which chaotic velocity spectra are observed at all spanwise locations.

Multigrid cross-correlation digital particle image velocimetry (MCCDPIV) is used to investigate the stability and structure of low Reynolds number axisymmetric jets. The in-plane velocities, out-of-plane vorticity and some of the components of the Reynolds stress tensor are measured. Two Reynolds numbers based on the orifice outlet diameter are examined (680 and 1,030) at two different positions: one close to the orifice, ranging from 2D 0 to 5D 0 (D 0 is the orifice diameter); and the other further from the orifice, ranging from 10D 0 to 14.4D 0. The results show that the lower Reynolds number jet (Re=680) is marginally unstable in the near-orifice region and is best described as laminar. Further downstream some intermittent structures are observed in the jet, and the growth in integrated turbulent kinetic energy with axial position indicates that the jet is also unstable in this region. For the higher Reynolds number jet (Re=1,030) the increasing size and intensity of vortical structures in the jet in the near-orifice region observed from the MCCDPIV data and the growth in integrated turbulent kinetic energy indicate that the jet is unstable. Further downstream this jet is best described as transitional or turbulent. From flow visualisation images in the near-orifice region it seems that, for both Reynolds numbers, shear layer roll-up occurs when the jet exits the orifice and enters the quiescent fluid in the tank, resulting in vortical structures that appear to grow as the jet proceeds. This is indicative of instability in both cases and is consistent with previous flow visualisation studies of low Reynolds number round jets. Discrepancies observed between the flow visualisation results and the MCCDPIV data is addressed. On the basis of flow visualisation results it is generally assumed that round jets are unstable at very low Reynolds number, however the present work shows that this assertion may be incorrect.

Summary The development of a plane Poiseuille flow at low Reynolds numbers is studied; given any velocity distribution in the section x=0, it is possible to evaluate its evolution along the direction of motion, by means of quite simple calculation. A numerical example is also given.

Model-based feedback control of vortex shedding at low Reynolds numbers is considered. The feedback signal is provided by velocity measurements in the wake, and actuation is achieved using blowing and suction on the cylinder’s surface. Using two-dimensional direct numerical simulations and reduced-order modelling techniques, linear models of the wake are formed at Reynolds numbers between 45 and 110. These models are used to design feedback controllers using \(\mathcal {H}_\infty \) loop-shaping. Complete suppression of shedding is demonstrated up to Re \(=\) 110—both for a single-sensor arrangement and for a three-sensor arrangement. The robustness of the feedback controllers is also investigated by applying them over a range of off-design Reynolds numbers, and good robustness properties are seen. It is also observed that it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve acceptable control performance—measured in a suitable way—as Reynolds number increases.

Time-resolved surface pressure measurements are used to experimentally investigate characteristics of separation and transition over a NACA 0018 airfoil for the relatively wide range of chord Reynolds numbers from 50,000 to 250,000 and angles of attack from 0° to 21°. The results provide a comprehensive data set of characteristic parameters for separated shear layer development and reveal important dependencies of these quantities on flow conditions. Mean surface pressure measurements are used to explore the variation in separation bubble position, edge velocity in the separated shear layer, and lift coefficients with angle of attack and Reynolds number. Consistent with previous studies, the separation bubble is found to move upstream and decrease in length as the Reynolds number and angle of attack increase. Above a certain angle of attack, the proximity of the separation bubble to the location of the suction peak results in a reduced lift slope compared to that observed at lower angles. Simultaneous measurements of the time-varying component of surface pressure at various spatial locations on the model are used to estimate the frequency of shear layer instability, maximum root-mean-square (RMS) surface pressure, spatial amplification rates of RMS surface pressure, and convection speeds of the pressure fluctuations in the separation bubble. A power-law correlation between the shear layer instability frequency and Reynolds number is shown to provide an order of magnitude estimate of the central frequency of disturbance amplification for various airfoil geometries at low Reynolds numbers. Maximum RMS surface pressures are found to agree with values measured in separation bubbles over geometries other than airfoils, when normalized by the dynamic pressure based on edge velocity. Spatial amplification rates in the separation bubble increase with both Reynolds number and angle of attack, causing the accompanying decrease in separation bubble length. Values of the convection speed of pressure fluctuations in the separated shear layer are measured to be between 35 and 50% of the edge velocity, consistent with predictions of linear stability theory for separated shear layers.
