In-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was utilized to examine the formation of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the water-soluble oligo(ethylene oxide) [OEO] disulfide [S(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3)](2) {[S(EO)(6)](2)} and two analogous thiols - HS(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)CH(3) {(EO)(6)} and HS(CH(2))(3)O(CH(2)CH(2)O)(5)CH(3) {C(3)(EO)(5)} - on Au from aqueous solutions. Kinetic data for all compounds follow simple Langmuirian models with the disulfide reaching a self-limiting final state (d=1.2nm) more rapidly than the full coverage final states of the thiol analogs (d=2.0nm). The in-situ ellipsometric thicknesses of all compounds were found to be nearly identical to earlier ex-situ ellipsometric measurements suggesting similar surface coverages and structural models in air and under water. Exposure to bovine serum albumin (BSA) shows the self-limiting (d=1.2nm) [S(EO)(6)](2) SAMs to be the most highly protein resistant surfaces relative to bare Au and completely-formed SAMs of the two analogous thiols and octadecanethiol (ODT). When challenged with up to near physiological levels of BSA (2.5mg/mL), protein adsorption on the final state [S(EO)(6)](2) SAM was only 3% of that which adsorbed to the bare Au and ODT SAMs.  相似文献

First-principle modeling is used to obtain a comprehensive understanding of infrared reflection absorption (RA) spectra of helical oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) containing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Highly ordered SAMs of methyl-terminated 1-thiaoligo(ethylene glycols) [HS(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3, n = 5, 6] on gold recently became accessible for systematic infrared analyses [Vanderah et al., Langmuir, 2003, 19, 3752]. We utilized the quoted experimental data to validate the first-principle modeling of infrared RA spectra of HS(CH2CH2O)(5,6)CH3 obtained by (i) DFT methods with gradient corrections (using different basis sets, including 6-311++G) and (ii) HF method followed by a M?ller-Plesset (MP2) correlation energy correction. In focus are fundamental modes in the fingerprint and CH-stretching regions. The frequencies and relative intensities in the calculated spectra for a single molecule are unambiguously identified with the bands observed in the experimental RA spectra of the corresponding SAMs. In addition to confirming our earlier assignment of the dominating peak in the CH-stretching region to CH2 asymmetric stretching vibrations, all other spectral features observed in that region have received an interpretation consistent (but not in all cases coinciding) with previous investigations. The obtained results provide an improved understanding of the orientation and conformation of the molecular building blocks within OEG-containing assemblies, which, in our opinion, is crucial for being able to predict the folding and phase characteristics and interaction of OEG-SAMs with water and proteins.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the disulfide [S(CH2CH2O)6CH3]2 ([S(EO)6]2) on Au from 95% ethanol and from 100% water are described. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy indicate that the [S(EO)6]2 films are similar to the disordered films of HS(CH2CH2O)6CH3 ((EO)6) and HS(CH2)3O(CH2CH2O)5CH3 (C3EO5) at their protein adsorption minima. The [S(EO)6]2 SAMs exhibit constant film thickness (d) of 1.2 +/- 0.2 nm over long immersion times (up to 20 days) and do not attain the highly ordered, 7/2 helical structure of the (EO)6 and C3EO5 SAMs (d = 2.0 nm). Exposure of these self-limiting [S(EO)6]2 SAMs to bovine serum albumin show high resistance to protein adsorption.  相似文献

A strategy for the synthesis of a series of closely related oligo(ethylene glycol)-terminated alkanethiol amides (principally HS(CH(2))(m)CONH(CH(2)CH(2)O)(n)H; m = 2, 5, 11, 15, n = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) and analogous esters has been developed. These compounds were made to study the structure and stability of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold in the prospect of designing new biosensing interfaces. For this purpose, monodisperse heterofunctional oligo(ethylene glycols) with up to 12 units were prepared. Selective monoacylation of the symmetrical tetra- and hexa(ethylene glycol) diols as their mesylates with the use of silver(I) oxide was performed. The synthetic approach was based on carbodiimide couplings of various oligo(ethylene glycol) derivatives to omega-(acetylthio) carboxylic acids via a terminal amino or hydroxyl function. SAM structures on gold were studied with respect to thickness, wettability (water contact angles approximately 30 degrees ), and conformation. A good fit was obtained for the relation between monolayer thickness (d) and the number of units in the oligo(ethylene glycol) chain (n): d = 2.8n + 21.8 (A). Interestingly, the corresponding infrared spectroscopy analysis showed a dramatic change in conformation of the oligomeric chains from all-trans (n = 4) to helical (n > or = 6) conformation. A crystalline helical structure was observed in the SAMs for n > 6.  相似文献

Extensive ab initio modeling has been performed to explain quantitatively the apparent shapes of characteristic bands, which are systematically observed in the fingerprint region of infrared (IR) reflection-absorption (RA) spectra of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-terminated SAMs. The presence of defects was thoroughly examined by modeling the RA spectra using the DFT method BP86/6-31G* for all-helical and all-trans conformers of HS(CH2CH2O)nR (n = 5, 6, R = H, CH3) and HS(CH2)15CONH(CH2CH2O)6H molecules and for several defect-containing conformers. These data were then used to simulate RA spectra of SAMs with different content of defects and to compare them with experiments. It is shown that for SAMs of HS(CH2CH2O)nCH3 (n = 5, 6) the pronounced asymmetry of the dominating band can be attributed to the multimode nature of COC stretching vibrations of helical conformers combined with the contribution from few percent of all-trans conformers. Arguments are presented which disprove appreciable amounts of helical conformers with single trans and/or gauche defects. Much more complex combination of factors, which can come into play in the formation of the high-frequency shoulder of COC band, is exemplified by self-assemblies of OEG-terminated amide-bridged alkanethiolates. In particular, spectral signatures of defects with inverted OH terminus are compared with other contributions to the apparent shape of COC band formation. For this family of SAMs, the presence of about 10% of all-trans conformers gives a satisfactory quantitative agreement between the calculated RA spectra and experimental observations.  相似文献

We have studied the oxidation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanes and alkenes with a thermal beam of OH radicals. The target films were produced by bonding alkane thiols and alkene thiols to a gold surface and the SAMs are mounted in a vacuum chamber at a base pressure of 10-9 Torr. Hydroxyl radicals were produced by a corona discharge in an Ar/H2O2/water mixture. The resultant molecular beam was scanned by an electrostatic hexapole and the OH radicals [4 (+/- 1) x 1011 OH radicals cm-2 sec-1] were focused onto the target SAM. All of the hydroxyl radicals impinging on the SAM surface are rotationally (J' ' 相似文献

Molecular simulations were performed to study a system consisting of protein (e.g., lysozyme) and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) terminating with different chemical groups in the presence of explicit water molecules and ions. Mixed SAMs of oligo (ethylene glycol) [S(CH2)4(OCH2CH2)4OH, (OEG)] and hydroxyl-terminated SAMs [S(CH2)4OH] with a mole fraction of OEG at chiOEG = 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0 were used in this study. In addition, methyl-terminated SAMs [S(CH2)11CH3] were also studied for comparison. The structural and dynamic behavior of hydration water, the flexibility and conformation state of SAMs, and the orientation and conformation of protein were examined. Simulation results were compared with those of experiments. It appears that there is a correlation between OEG surface resistance to protein adsorption and the surface density of OEG chains, which leads to a large number of tightly bound water molecules around OEG chains and the rapid mobility of hydrated SAM chains.  相似文献

The adsorption of long-chain omega-alkoxy-n-alkanethiols [CH(3)(CH(2))(p-1)O(CH(2))(m)SH; m = 11, 19, 22; p = 18, 22] onto copper produces self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) that can provide protection against corrosion of the underlying metal substrate. The resulting films are 40-60 A in thickness and are isostructural with SAMs formed on copper from unsubstituted n-alkanethiols. As evidenced by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the barrier properties of these ether-containing SAMs depend on the chain length of the adsorbate and the position of the ethereal unit along the hydrocarbon chain. For SAMs where the ether substitution is farther from the copper surface, the initial coating resistances are similar to those projected for unsubstituted n-alkanethiolate SAMs of similar thickness. For SAMs where the ether substitution is nearer to the copper surface (m = 11), the resistances are significantly less than those for unsubstituted n-alkanethiolate SAMs of similar thickness, reflecting the effect of the molecular structure on the barrier properties of the film. Upon exposure to 1 atm of O(2) at 100% RH, the SAMs become less densely packed as observed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and their barrier properties deteriorate as observed by EIS. The rate that the SAMs lose their barrier properties upon exposure to oxidizing conditions is correlated to the strength of intermolecular interactions within the bulk state of the adsorbate.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been employed to study the surface intermediates from the thermal decomposition of HSCH2CH2OH on Cu(111) at elevated temperatures. On the basis of the changes of the core-level binding energies of C, O, and S as a function of temperature, it is found that HSCH2CH2OH decomposes sequentially to form -SCH2CH2OH and -SCH2CH2O-. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory for an unreconstructed one-layer copper surface suggest that -SCH2CH2OH is preferentially bonded at a 3-fold hollow site, with an adsorption energy lower than the cases at bridging and atop sites by 15.6 and 47.5 kcal x mol(-1), respectively. Other structural characteristics for the energy-optimized geometry includes the tilted C-S bond (14.1 degrees with respect to the surface normal), the C-C bond titled toward a bridging site, and the C-O bond pointed toward the surface. In the case of -SCH2CH2O- on Cu(111), the calculations suggest that the most probable geometry of the adsorbate has its S and O bonded at hollow and bridging sites, respectively. With respect to the surface normal, the angles of the S-C and O-C are 27.9 and 34.0 degrees.  相似文献

The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two asymmetric disulfides derivatives (namely, LC1 and LC2) were prepared on Au(111). The disulfides contain a pure alkyl chain and an alkyl chain terminated by a cyanoterphenyl group. LC1 and LC2 differ by the way the cyanoterphenyl group is attached onto the alkyl chain: it is expected to be aligned with the alkyl chain in the case of LC1 and perpendicular to it in the case of LC2 (T shape). The consequences in terms of surface coverage, chemical composition, and molecular conformation of the two SAMs are studied using ellipsometry, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and broadband femtosecond sum-frequency generation (SFG). A model of coverage and tilt angle based on ellipsometry and XPS results shows that the SAM "manages" the large size of the terphenyl group by lowering the terphenyl containing chain coverage and by increasing the tilt. In the case of LC2, the disulfide breaks during molecular assembly, less terphenyl chains adsorb than pure alkyl chains, and the overall chain coverage is smaller than for LC1. RAIRS and SFG results show that these differences in surface coverage correspond to a drastically different orientation of the terphenyl axis, which lies nearly parallel to the surface for LC2, while it is tilted by approximately 28 degrees for LC1. This shows that the terphenyl group takes much more space on the surface in the case of LC2 and explains why the terphenyl coverage is found smaller for LC2. The anomalous SFG relative intensities observed in the region of CH stretch between CH2 and CH3 modes, and symmetric and antisymmetric modes, show that the chains are not in the fully stretched, all-trans conformation, LC2 being probably more distorted than LC1. These distorsions allow the molecules to occupy the space available below the large terphenyl group. The relative intensities of symmetric and antisymmetric modes are discussed qualitatively for some typical molecular conformations and orientations of the alkyl chain.  相似文献

Four tetrameric nickel(II) pseudohalide complexes have been synthesized and structurally, spectroscopically, and magnetically characterized. Compounds 1-3 are isostructural and exhibit the general formula [Ni(2)(dpk·OH)(dpk·CH(3)O)(L)(H(2)O)](2)A(2)·2H(2)O, where dpk = di-2-pyridylketone; L = N(3)(-), and A = ClO(4)(-) for 1, L = NCO(-) and A = ClO(4)(-) for 2, and L = NCO(-) and A = NO(3)(-) for 3. The formula for 4 is [Ni(4)(dpk·OH)(3) (dpk·CH(3)O)(2)(NCO)](BF(4))(2)·3H(2)O. The ligands dpk·OH(-) and dpk·CH(3)O(-) result from solvolysis and ulterior deprotonation of dpk in water and methanol, respectively. The four tetramers exhibit a dicubane-like core with two missing vertexes where the Ni(II) ions are connected through end-on pseudohalide and oxo bridges. Magnetic measurements showed that compounds 1-4 are ferromagnetic. The values of the exchange constants were determined by means of a theoretical model based on three different types of coupling. Thus, the calculated J values (J(1) = J(2), J(3), and D) were 5.6, 11.8, and 5.6 cm(-1) for 1, 5.5, 12.0, and 5.6 cm(-1) for 2, 6.3, 4.9, and 6.2 cm(-1) for 3, and (J(1), J(2), J(3), and D) 6.9, 7.0, 15.2, and 4.8 cm(-1) for 4.  相似文献

Monolayers from the newly synthesized compound methoxy-tri(ethylene glycol)-undecenyldimethylchlorosilane (CH3O(CH2CH2O)3(CH2)11Si(CH3)2Cl, MeO(EG)3C11DMS) and dodecyldimethylchlorosilane (DDMS), both pure and mixed, were prepared by self-assembly from organic solution in the presence of an organic base. The films obtained were characterized by advancing and receding contact angle measurements and ellipsometry to confirm the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The resulting data on the covalently attached dimethylsilanes were compared to known oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-terminated SAM systems based on terminal alkenes, thiolates or trihydrolyzable silanes. The composition of the mixed SAMs was found to depend directly and linearly on the composition of the silanization solution. Enhanced protein repellent properties were found for the SAMs using a variety of proteins, including the Ras Binding Domain (RBD), a protein with high relevance for cancer diagnostics. Roughly a RBD protein monolayer amount was adsorbed to silicon oxide surfaces silanized with DDMS or non-silanized silicon wafers, and in contrast, no RBD was adsorbed to surfaces silanized with MeO(EG)3C11DMS or to mixed monolayers consisting of DDMS and MeO(EG)3C11DMS if the content of OEG-silane overcame a critical content of X(EG) approximately 0.9.  相似文献

Protein adsorption on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and oligo(ethylene oxide) (OEO) monolayers is studied at different packing densities using the Langmuir technique. In the case of a PEO monolayer, a protein adsorption minimum is revealed at sigma(-1) = 10 nm(2) for both lysozyme and fibrinogen. Manifested are two packing density regimes of steric repulsion and compressive attraction between PEO and a protein on top of the overall attraction of the protein to the air/water interface. The observed protein adsorption minimum coincides with the maximum of the surface segment density at sigma(-1) = 10 nm(2). However, OEO monolayer presents a different scenario, namely that the amount of protein adsorbed decreases monotonically with increasing packing density, indicating that the OEO chains merely act as a steric barrier to protein adsorption onto the air/water interface. Besides, in the adsorption of fibrinogen, three distinct kinetic regimes controlled by diffusion, penetration and rearrangement are recognized, whereas only the latter two were made out in the adsorption of lysozyme.  相似文献

The reaction of 1:1 stoichiometries (1:1.5 for the nitrate/tetraethylene glycol (EO4) and pentaethylene glycol (EO5) complexes) of PbX(2) (X = NO(3), Br) with five- to eight-donor poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) in 3:1 CH(3)CN/CH(3)OH (CH(3)CN only for the nitrate/EO5 complex) followed by solvent evaporation resulted in six crystalline materials upon which X-ray structural analyses were carried out: [Pb(NO(3))(2)(EO4)](n)(), [Pb(NO(3))(2)(EO5)], [Pb(NO(3))(2)(EO6)], [PbBr(EO5)(&mgr;-Br)PbBr(2)].H(2)O, [PbBr(NCMe)(EO6)](2)[PbBr(2)(EO6)][PbBr(3)](2), and [PbBr(EO7)][PbBr(3)]. The nitrates crystallize as tight ion pairs with the PEG ligands coordinating in an equatorial plane around the Pb(2+) ions. Because EO4 has only five oxygen donors, this complex exhibits steric unsaturation which is overcome by a monodentate interaction with a third nitrate anion that is also coordinated to a neighboring Pb(2+) ion. The six donors of EO5 coordinate in an equatorial plane resulting in a 10-coordinate complex with trans, twisted, bidentate nitrate anions. The seven-donor hexaethylene glycol (EO6) only uses six of its oxygen donors to coordinate Pb(2+). Lead(II) bromide complexes with PEGs tend to crystallize as PEG complexed cations with polymeric lead(II) bromide anions. In the EO5 complex, bromide anions in the polymer also coordinate to the PEG-wrapped Pb(2+) cations. The hexa- and heptaethylene glycol (EO6 and EO7, respectively) complexes contain discreet ions. In these halide complexes, EO7 is the only PEG to expand the Pb(2+) coordination number from eight to nine. The structural properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-terminated and amide-containing alkanethiols (HS(CH(2))(15)CONH(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)H and related molecules with shorter alkyl or OEG portions) on gold are addressed. Optimized geometry of the molecular constituents, characteristic vibration frequencies, and transition dipole moments are obtained using density-functional theory methods with gradient corrections. These data are used to simulate IR reflection-absorption (RA) spectra associated with different OEG conformations. It is shown that the positions and relative intensities of all characteristic peaks in the fingerprint region are accurately reproduced by the model spectra within a narrow range of the tilt and rotation angles of the alkyl plane, which turns out to be nearly the same for the helical and all-trans OEG conformations. In contrast, the tilt of the OEG axis changes considerably under conformational transition from helical to all-trans OEG. By means of ab initio modeling, we also clarify other details of the molecular structure and orientation, including lateral hydrogen bonding, the latter of which is readily possessed by the SAMs in focus. These results are crucial for understanding phase and folding characteristics of OEG SAMs and other complex molecular assemblies. They are also expected to contribute to an improved understanding of the interaction with water, ions, and ultimately biological macromolecules.  相似文献

Ce(1-x-y)Ti(x)Pt(y)O(2-delta) (x=0.15; y=0.01) and Ce(1-x-y)Ti(x)Pd(y)O(2-delta) (x=0.25; y=0.02 and 0.05) are found to be good CO oxidation catalysts [T. Baidya et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 110, 5262 (2006); T. Baidya et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 111, 830 (2007)]. A detailed structural study of these compounds has been carried out by extended x-ray absorption fine structure along with x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The gross cubic fluorite structure of CeO(2) is retained in the mixed oxides. Oxide ion sublattice around Ti as well as Pt and Pd ions is destabilized in the solid solution. Instead of ideal eight coordinations, Ti, Pd, and Pt ions have 4+3, 4+3, and 3+4 coordinations creating long and short bonds. The long Ti-O, Pd-O, and Pt-O bonds are approximately 2.47 A (2.63 A for Pt-O) which are much higher than average Ce-O bonds of 2.34 A.  相似文献

A novel layered K(4)Ag(2)Sn(3)S(9) x 2KOH was synthesized solvothermally. A mixture of ethanol and HSCH(2)CH(SH)CH(2)OH was used for the synthesis. The HSCH(2)CH(SH)CH(2)OH plays an important role and appears to serve as a mineralizer for the solvothermal reaction. A layer comprises Sn(3)S(9)(6)(-) clusters linked by Ag(+) ions and possesses two types of 1D channels in which potassium ions are located. Reactions of methylglyoxyl and methylglyoxylperoxy radicals were investigated at a total pressure of 1 bar in oxygen. Methylglyoxyl radicals were generated by stationary photolysis of Br2-CH3C(O)C(O)H-NO2-O2-N2 mixtures at wavelengths > or =480 nm and of Cl2-CH3C(O)C(O)H-NO2-O2-N2 mixtures in the wavelength range 315-460 nm. In the bromine system, rate constant ratios for the reactions CH3C(O)CO --> CH3CO + CO (kdis) and CH3C(O)CO + O2 --> CH3C(O)C(O)O2 (kO2) were measured as a function of temperature in the range 275-311 K. Assuming the constant value kO2 = 5.1 x 10(-12) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) for our reaction conditions, kdis = 1.2 x 10(10.0+/-0.7) x exp(-11.7 +/- 3.8 kJ mol(-1)/RT) s(-1) (2sigma errors) was obtained for ptot = 1 bar (M = O2), in good agreement with the kinetic parameters calculated by Méreau et al. [R. Méreau, M.-T. Rayez, J.-C. Rayez, F. Caralp and R. Lesclaux, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2001, 3, 4712]. CH3C(O)C(O)O2 radicals oxidise NO2, forming NO3, CH3CO and CO2. This experimental result is supported by DFT and ab initio calculations. Possible mechanisms for the observed formation of several % of ketene and bromoacetyl peroxynitrate are discussed. Use of Cl rather than Br atoms to abstract the aldehydic H atom from methylglyoxal leads to chemically activated CH3C(O)CO radicals, thus substantially increasing the fraction of CH3C(O)CO radicals that decompose rather than add O2.  相似文献
