The use of ion mobility spectrometry systems to detect explosives in high security situations creates a need to determine compounds that interfere and may compromise accurate detection. This is the first study to identify possible interfering air contaminants common in airport settings by IMS. Seventeen suspected contaminants from four major sources were investigated. Due to the ionization selectivity gained by employing chloride reactant ion chemistry, only 7 of the 17 compounds showed an IMS response. Of those seven compounds, only 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol (4,6DNOC) was found to have a similar mobility to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) with K(o) values of 1.55 and 1.50 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), respectively. Although baseline resolution between TNT and 4,6DNOC was not achieved, the drift time for TNT was still easily identified. Alkyl-nitrated phenols, due to acidic fog, responded the strongest in the IMS. The effect of contamination on TNT sensitivity was investigated. Charge competition between TNT and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4DNP) was found to occur and to effect TNT sensitivity.

The analysis of explosives with ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) directly from aqueous solutions was shown for the first time using an electrospray ionization technique. The IMS was operated in the negative mode at 250°C and coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer to identify the observed IMS peaks. The IMS response characteristics of trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene (2-ADNT), 4-nitrotoluene (4-NT), trinitrobenzene (TNB), cyclo-1,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine (RDX), cyclo-tetramethylene-tetranitramine (HMX), dinitro-ethyleneglycol (EGDN) and nitroglycerine (NG) were investigated. Several breakdown products, predominantly NO2 and NO3, were observed in the low-mass region. Nevertheless, all compounds with the exception of NG produced at least one ion related to the intact molecule and could therefore be selectively detected. For RDX and HMX the [M+Cl] cluster ion was the main peak and the signal intensities could be greatly enhanced by the addition of small amounts of sodium chloride to the sprayed solutions. The reduced mobility constants (K0) were in good agreement with literature data obtained from experiments where the explosives were introduced into the IMS from the vapor phase. The detection limits were in the range of 15–190 μg l−1 and all calibration curves showed good linearity. A mixture of TNT, RDX and HMX was used to demonstrate the high separation potential of the IMS system. Baseline separation of the three compounds was attained within a total analysis time of 6.4 s.

During the investigation of the degradation products of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) were found to have IMS responses which overlapped those of the TNT degradation products. It was observed that the Cl(-) reactant ion chemistry, often used for explosives analysis, was not always successful in resolving peak overlap of analytes and interferents. It is shown here that resolution of the analytes and interferences can sometimes be achieved using only air for the formation of reactant ions, at other times through the use of Br(-) as an alternative to Cl(-) for producing reactant ions, and also through the promotion of adduct stability by lowering the IMS temperature.

Ion mobility spectrometry provides information about molecular structures of ions. Hence, high resolving power allows separation of isomers which is of major interest in several applications. In this work, we couple our high-resolution ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) with a resolving power of Rp?=?100 to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). Besides, the benefit of an increased resolving power such an IMS-MS also helps analyzing and understanding the ionization processes in IMS. Usually, the coupling between IMS and TOF-MS is realized by synchronizing data acquisition of the IMS and MS resulting in two-dimensional data containing ion mobility and mass spectra. However, due to peak widths of less than 100 μs in our high-resolution IMS, this technique is not practicable due to significant peak broadening during the ion transfer into the MS and an insufficient data acquisition rate of the MS. Thus, a novel but simple interface between the IMS and MS has been designed which minimizes ion losses, allows recording of ion mobility at full IMS resolving power, and enables a shuttered transmission of ions into the MS. The interface is realized by replacing the Faraday plate used in IMS by a Faraday grid that is shielded by two additional aperture grids. For demonstration, positive product ions of benzene, toluene, and m-xylene in air are investigated. The IMS is equipped with a radioactive 3H source. Besides the well-known product ions M+ and M·NO+, a dimer ion is also observed for benzene and toluene, consisting of two molecules and three further hydrogen atoms.

An expanded theory for the resolving power of a linear ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) is derived. By definition, the resolving power is directly proportional to the total drift time for the ion through the drift tube divided by the full-width-at-half-height (FWHH) of the observed ion mobility peak. Two approaches to theoretically estimating these two parameters are possible, depending on the operating parameters of the IMS cell. The drift time is given by the first moment of the IMS response. If the electric fields (assumed uniform) are equal in both the shutter/aperture and aperture/collector region, the FWHH is given by a difference in error functions. If the electric fields (again assumed uniform) are not equal, the FWHH is given by the second central moment of the IMS response and can only be known to within a multiplicative factor. The effectiveness of these two approaches is demonstrated using IMS data from the published literature. The additional peak broadening often observed in a linear IMS has several possible sources. One depends on the construction of the cell and the parallelism (or lack thereof) that might exist between the aperture grid and ion collector. Another depends on electric fields used to bias the cell. If the electric field in the aperture/collector region is less than in the shutter/aperture region, peak broadening occurs. Induction effects in the aperture/collector region not only shorten drift times, but also create diffusion-like broadening of the peak. Shortening the distance between the aperture grid and ion collector, or using a higher electric field in that region, minimizes induction effects. Drift time calibration requires adjustments for induction effects.

Current commercially available ion mobility spectrometers are intended for the analysis of chemicals in the gas phase. Sample introduction methods, such as direct air sampling, a GC injector or a thermal desorber, are commonly an integral part of these instruments. This paper describes an electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometer system that allows direct introduction samples in solution phase. This allows direct analysis of non-volatile organic and biological samples, and avoids decomposition of thermally liable samples, providing reliable chemical identification. In addition, the new ion mobility spectrometer allows mobility analysis with high resolving power. Commonly used commercial IMS systems provide resolving powers between 10 and 30; this new ion mobility spectrometer has resolving power greater than 60 for routine analysis. A high resolution instrument is necessary for many applications where a complex mixture needs to be separated and quantified. This paper demonstrates the advantages of using a high resolution ion mobility spectrometer and an electrospray ionization source for the analysis of non-volatile pharmaceuticals as well as dissolved explosive in solution phase.

An ion mobility spectrometer that can easily be installed as an intermediate component between a commercial triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer and its original atmospheric pressure ionization (API) sources was developed. The curtain gas from the mass spectrometer is also used as the ion mobility spectrometer drift gas. The design of the ion mobility spectrometer allows reasonably fast installation (about 1 h), and thus the ion mobility spectrometer can be considered as an accessory of the mass spectrometer. The ion mobility spectrometer module can also be used as an independently operated device when equipped with a Faraday cup detector. The drift tube of the ion mobility spectrometer module consists of inlet, desolvation, drift, and extraction regions. The desolvation, drift and extraction regions are separated by ion gates. The inlet region has the shape of a stainless steel cup equipped with a small orifice. Ion mobility spectrometer drift gas is introduced through a curtain gas line from an original flange of the mass spectrometer. After passing through the drift tube, the drift gas serves as a curtain gas for the ion-sampling orifice of the ion mobility spectrometer before entering the ion source. Counterflow of the drift gas improves evaporation of the solvent from the electrosprayed sample. Drift gas is pumped away from the ion source through the original exhaust orifice of the ion source. Initial characterization of the ion mobility spectrometer device includes determination of resolving power values for a selected set of test compounds, separation of a simple mixture, and comparison of the sensitivity of the electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometry/mass spectrometry (ESI-IMS/MS) mode with that of the ESI-MS mode. A resolving power of 80 was measured for 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine in a 333 V/cm drift field at room temperature and with a 0.2 ms ion gate opening time. The resolving power was shown to be dependent on drift gas flow rate for all studied ion gate opening times. Resolving power improved as the drift gas flow increased, e.g. at a 0.5 ms gate opening time, a resolving power of 31 was obtained with a 0.65 L/min flow rate and 47 with a 1.3 L/min flow rate for tetrabutylammonium iodide. The measured limits of detection with ESI-MS and with ESI-IMS/MS modes were similar, demonstrating that signal losses in the IMS device are minimal when it is operated in a continuous flow mode. Based on these preliminary results, the IMS/MS instrument is anticipated to have potential for fast screening analysis that can be applied, for example, in environmental and drug analysis.

Ion mobility-mass spectrometry
This review article compares and contrasts various types of ion mobility-mass spectrometers available today and describes their advantages for application to a wide range of analytes. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), when coupled with mass spectrometry, offers value-added data not possible from mass spectra alone. Separation of isomers, isobars, and conformers; reduction of chemical noise; and measurement of ion size are possible with the addition of ion mobility cells to mass spectrometers. In addition, structurally similar ions and ions of the same charge state can be separated into families of ions which appear along a unique mass-mobility correlation line. This review describes the four methods of ion mobility separation currently used with mass spectrometry. They are (1) drift-time ion mobility spectrometry (DTIMS), (2) aspiration ion mobility spectrometry (AIMS), (3) differential-mobility spectrometry (DMS) which is also called field-asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) and (4) traveling-wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS). DTIMS provides the highest IMS resolving power and is the only IMS method which can directly measure collision cross-sections. AIMS is a low resolution mobility separation method but can monitor ions in a continuous manner. DMS and FAIMS offer continuous-ion monitoring capability as well as orthogonal ion mobility separation in which high-separation selectivity can be achieved. TWIMS is a novel method of IMS with a low resolving power but has good sensitivity and is well intergrated into a commercial mass spectrometer. One hundred and sixty references on ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IMMS) are provided.

In recent years, the resolving power of ion mobility instruments has been increased significantly, enabling ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) to be utilized as an analytical separation technique for complex mixtures. In theory, decreasing the drift tube temperature results in increased resolution due to decreased ion diffusion. However, the heat requirements for complete ion desolvation with electrospray ionization (ESI) have limited the reduction of temperatures in atmospheric pressure ion mobility instruments. Micro-electrospray conditions were investigated in this study to enable more efficient droplet formation and ionization with the objective of reducing drift tube temperatures and increasing IMS resolution. For small molecules (peptides), the drift tube temperature was reduced to ambient temperature with good resolution by employing reduced capillary diameters and flow rates. By employing micro-spray conditions, experimental resolution values approaching theoretically predicted resolution were achieved over a wide temperature range (30 to 250 °C). The historical heat requirements of atmospheric pressure IMS due to ESI desolvation were eliminated due to the use of micro-spray conditions and the high-resolution IMS spectra of GLY-HIS-LYS was obtained at ambient temperature. The desolvation of proteins (cytochrome c) was found to achieve optimal resolution at temperatures greater than 125 °C. This is significantly improved from earlier IMS studies that required drift tube temperatures of 250°C for protein desolvation.

In order to hyphenate ion pairing chromatography and MS detection we used several types of formates as volatile ion pairing reagents (IPRs) instead of common tetraalkylammonium salts, as these salts tend to precipitate in the ion source. The formates were prepared by mixing formic acid with the corresponding amine. Both tributyl- and trihexylammonium formate proved to be valuable IPRs for the separation of acidic compounds like nitrobenzoic acids, nitrobenzenesulfonic acids and nitrated phenols. Due to the weaker retention of the ion-pairs with trialkylammonium formates compared with tetraalkylammonium compounds, either less organic modifier or a higher concentration of the IPR had to be used. With negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry it was possible to unambiguously identify several acidic oxidation products of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in ammunition wastewater and soil extracts. 2-amino-4,6-dinitrobenzoic acid was often found to be the main metabolite of TNT in such water samples.

A novel surface ionization source for ion mobility spectrometer
A surface ionization (SI) source is designed and prepared for ion mobility spectrometer (IMS). The source acts not only as an emitter but also an ion injector which can inject ions periodically into the drift region of drift tube. Using the dual-role source, the dimension of the drift tube can be decreased and the circuit for high voltage can be simplified efficiently. The IMS with the SI source has a response range of ∼4 orders of magnitude and a good reproducibility to tri-ethylamine. Compared with radioactive ionization (RI), the ultra-short time for ion injection and the zero level base line of ion mobility spectrum are characteristics of the surface ionization.

The performance of three different types of ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) devices: GDA2 with a radioactive ion source (Airsense, Germany), UV-IMS with a photo-ionization source (G.A.S. Germany) and VG-Test with a corona discharge source (3QBD, Israel) was studied. The gas-phase ion chemistry in the IMS devices affected the species formed and their measured reduced mobility values. The sensitivity and limit of detection for trimethylamine (TMA), putrescine and cadaverine were compared by continuous monitoring of a stream of air with a given concentration of the analyte and by measurement of headspace vapors of TMA in a sealed vial. Preprocessing of the mobility spectra and the effectiveness of multivariate curve resolution techniques (MCR-LASSO) improved the accuracy of the measurements by correcting baseline effects and adjusting for variations in drift time as well as enhancing the signal to noise ratio and deconvolution of the complex data matrix to their pure components. The limit of detection for measurement of the biogenic amines by the three IMS devices was between 0.1 and 1.2 ppm (for TMA with the VG-Test and GDA, respectively) and between 0.2 and 0.7 ppm for putrescine and cadaverine with all three devices. Considering the uncertainty in the LOD determination there is almost no statistically significant difference between the three devices although they differ in their operating temperature, ionization method, drift tube design and dopant chemistry. This finding may have general implications on the achievable performance of classic IMS devices.

In this study, the capability of negative corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) for quantitative magnitude of several explosives including 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and cyclo-1,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine (RDX) has been evaluated for the first time. The total current obtained with the negative corona discharge was about 100 times larger than that of IMS based on 63Ni, which results in a lower detection limit and a wider linear dynamic range. The detection limits for PETN, TNT and RDX were 8×10−11, 7×10−11 and 3×10−10 g, respectively. The calibration plots for these explosives showed linear dynamic ranges of about four orders of magnitude.

Negative corona discharge atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) was used to investigate phenols with varying numbers of tert‐butyl groups using ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry (IMS‐MS). The main characteristic ion observed for all the phenolic compounds was the deprotonated molecule [M–H]. 2‐tert‐Butylphenol showed one main mobility peak in the mass‐selected mobility spectrum of the [M–H] ion measured under nitrogen atmosphere. When air was used as a nebulizer gas an oxygen addition ion was seen in the mass spectrum and, interestingly, this new species [M–H+O] had a shorter drift time than the lighter [M–H] ion. Other phenolic compounds primarily produced two IMS peaks in the mass‐selected mobility spectra measured using the [M–H] ion. It was also observed that two isomeric compounds, 2,4‐di‐tert‐butylphenol and 2,6‐di‐tert‐butylphenol, could be separated with IMS. In addition, mobilities of various characteristic ions of 2,4,6‐trinitrotoluene were measured, since this compound was previously used as a mobility standard. The possibility of using phenolic compounds as mobility standards is also discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper explains the effect of pressure on separation factor, resolving power (defined based on a single peak), and resolution (defined based on two adjacent peaks) in ion mobility spectrometry. IMS spectra were recorded at various pressures ranging from 39 hPa (29 Torr) up to atmospheric pressure and various ion gates ranging from 50 to 225 μs. The results show that the IMS peaks shift perfectly linear with pressure so that separation factors remain unaffected by pressure. However, pressure has strong influence on resolving power and resolution. Reducing pressure at constant pulse width decreases the resolving power and resolution. On the other hand, the decrease in resolution can be compensated by shortening the ion pulse width since reducing pressure results in a higher ion current.

Using a simple ion source set-up, laser desorption/ionization on silicon (DIOS) was demonstrated with the use of a custom-made drift tube ion mobility spectrometer (IMS), mounted on a commercial triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, and with an IMS equipped with a Faraday plate detector. DIOS was tested by mobility measurement of tetrapropylammonium iodide, tetrabutylammonium iodide and tetrapentylammonium iodide, whilst 2,6-di-tert- butylpyridine was used as a standard. The reduced mobilities measured for the test halides are in concordance with previously obtained ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry data.

In this work we evaluate the influence of thermal desorber temperature on the analytical response of a swipe-based thermal desorption ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) for detection of trace explosives. IMS response for several common high explosives ranging from 0.1 ng to 100 ng was measured over a thermal desorber temperature range from 60 °C to 280 °C. Most of the explosives examined demonstrated a well-defined maximum IMS signal response at a temperature slightly below the melting point. Optimal temperatures, giving the highest IMS peak intensity, were 80 °C for trinitrotoluene (TNT), 100 °C for pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), 160 °C for cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and 200 °C for cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX). By modifying the desorber temperature, we were able to increase cumulative IMS signal by a factor of 5 for TNT and HMX, and by a factor of 10 for RDX and PETN. Similar signal enhancements were observed for the same compounds formulated as plastic-bonded explosives (Composition 4 (C-4), Detasheet, and Semtex). In addition, mixtures of the explosives exhibited similar enhancements in analyte peak intensities. The increases in sensitivity were obtained at the expense of increased analysis times of up to 20 seconds. A slow sample heating rate as well as slower vapor-phase analyte introduction rate caused by low-temperature desorption enhanced the analytical sensitivity of individual explosives, plastic-bonded explosives, and explosives mixtures by IMS. Several possible mechanisms that can affect IMS signal response were investigated such as thermal degradation of the analytes, ionization efficiency, competitive ionization from background, and aerosol emission.
