Arsenic exposure to humans is pervasive, and, increasingly, studies are revealing adverse health effects at ever lower doses. Drinking water is the main route of exposure for many individuals; however, food can be a significant source of arsenic to an individual, especially if their diet is rice-based. Infants are particularly susceptible to dietary exposure, since many first foods contain rice and they have a low body mass. Here we report on arsenic concentration and speciation in infant formulas and first foods. Speciation is essential for food analysis because of the much greater toxicity of inorganic arsenic species and the possibility that arsenic in food (unlike water) may be present in either inorganic or organic forms. Infant milk formulas were low in total arsenic (2.2-12.6 ng g(-1), n=15). Non-dairy formulas were significantly higher in arsenic than dairy-based formulas. Arsenic in formula was almost exclusively inorganic and predominantly arsenic(V). Arsenic concentration in purees (n=41) and stage 3 foods (n=18) ranged from 0.3-22 ng g(-1). Rice-fortified foods had significantly higher total arsenic concentrations than non rice-based foods. Again arsenic speciation was predominantly inorganic; arsenic(III) was the main species with lower concentrations of DMA and arsenic(V) also present. These data confirm that infants are exposed to arsenic via diet, and suggest that careful attention to diet choices may limit this.  相似文献

Health risk associated with dietary arsenic intake may be different for infants and adults. Seafood is the main contributor to arsenic intake for adults while terrestrial-based food is the primary source for infants. Processed infant food products such as rice-based cereals, mixed rice/formula cereals, milk-based infant formula, applesauce and puree of peaches, pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, and squash were evaluated for total and speciated arsenic content. Arsenic concentrations found in rice-based cereals (63-320 ng/g dry weight) were similar to those reported for raw rice. Results for the analysis of powdered infant formula by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) indicated a narrow and low arsenic concentration range (12 to 17 ng/g). Arsenic content in puree infant food products, including rice cereals, fruits, and vegetables, varies from <1 to 24 ng/g wet weight. Sample treatment with trifluoroacetic acid at 100 degrees C were an efficient and mild method for extraction of arsenic species present in different food matrixes as compared to alternative methods that included sonication and accelerated solvent extraction. Extraction recoveries from 94 to 128% were obtained when the summation of species was compared to total arsenic. The ion chromatography (IC)-ICP-MS method selected for arsenic speciation allowed for the quantitative determination of inorganic arsenic [As(III) + As(V)], dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and methylarsonic acid (MMA). Inorganic arsenic and DMA are the main species found in rice-based and mixed rice/formula cereals, although traces of MMA were also detected. Inorganic arsenic was present in freeze-dried sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, and peaches. MMA and DMA were not detected in these samples. Arsenic species in squash, pears, and applesauce were not detected above the method detection limit [5 ng/g dry weight for As(III), MMA, and DMA and 10 ng/g dry weight for As(V)].  相似文献

Arsenic is a toxic element extensively studied in the marine environment due to differential toxicological effects of inorganic and organic species. In the present work, the bivalve Scrobicularia plana was exposed to AsV (10 and 100 μg/L) for 14 days to evaluate the metabolic perturbations caused by this element. Arsenic speciation and metabolomic analysis were performed in the digestive gland of the bivalve using two complementary analytical platforms based on inorganic and organic mass spectrometry. It has been observed the greater presence of the innocuous specie arsenobetaine produced in this organism as defense mechanism against arsenic toxicity, although significant concentrations of methylated and inorganic arsenic were also present, depending on the level of arsenic in aqueous media. Complementarily, a metabolomic study based on mass spectrometry and statistical discriminant analysis allows a good classification of samples associated to low and high As(V) exposure in relation to controls. About 15 metabolites suffer significant changes of expression by the presence of As(V): amino acids, nucleotides, energy‐related metabolites, free fatty acids, phospholipids and triacylglycerides, which can be related to membrane structural and functional damage. In addition, perturbation of the methylation cycle, associated with the increase of homocysteine and methionine was observed, which enhance the methylation of toxic inorganic arsenic to less toxic dimethylarsenic.  相似文献

Arsenic in drinking water affects millions of people around the world. While soluble arsenic is commonly measured, the amount of particulate arsenic in drinking water has often been overlooked. We report here determination of the acid-leachable particulate arsenic and soluble arsenicals in well water from an arsenic-poisoning endemic area in Inner Mongolia, China. Water samples (583) were collected from 120 wells in Ba Men, Inner Mongolia, where well water was the primary drinking water source. Two methods were demonstrated for the determination of soluble arsenic species (primarily inorganic arsenate and arsenite) and total particulate arsenic. The first method used solid phase extraction cartridges and membrane filters to separate arsenic species on-site, followed by analysis of the individual arsenic species eluted from the cartridges and filters. The other method uses liquid chromatography separation with hydride generation atomic fluorescence detection to determine soluble arsenic species. Analysis of acidified water samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry provided the total arsenic concentration. Arsenic concentrations in water samples from the 120 wells ranged from <1 to ∼1000 μg L−1. On average, particulate arsenic accounted for 39 ± 38% (median 36%) of the total arsenic. In some wells, particulate arsenic was six times higher than the soluble arsenic concentration. Particulate arsenic can be effectively removed using membrane filtration. The information on particulate and soluble arsenic in water is useful for optimizing treatment options and for understanding the geochemical behavior of arsenic in groundwater.  相似文献

Arsenic composes a danger for human health all over the world as it is responsible for water resources contamination. The toxicity of arsenic depends on its chemical form. However, occurrence of particular arsenic species is dependent on processes occurring in water. Nowadays, more arsenic species is detected and analyzed in different kind of water (mineral, tap, waste), mainly owing to great possibilities resulting from coupling high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This review mainly describes arsenic speciation analysis by HPLC-ICP-MS technique on the basis of articles that have been published since 2000. Arsenic chemistry, occurrence in different kind of water, total arsenic determination with interferences elimination and its validation and analytical performance are also reviewed.  相似文献

In this opinion paper the toxicokinetic behaviour of arsenosugars is reviewed and compared with that of inorganic arsenic and arsenobetaine. It is concluded that the arsenosugars are similar to inorganic arsenic in terms of metabolite formation and tissue accumulation. As a pragmatic means of generating uniform data sets which adequately represent the toxicity of arsenic in food we recommend reporting partly speciated arsenic concentrations in food commodities in three fractions: i) toxic inorganic arsenic as arsenate (after oxidation); ii) arsenobetaine as established non-toxic arsenic; and iii) potentially toxic arsenic, which includes arsenosugars and other organoarsenicals.  相似文献

Arsenic is a natural element found in the environment in organic and inorganic forms. The inorganic form is much more toxic and is found in ground water, surface water and many foods. This form is responsible for many adverse health effects like cancer (skin, lung, liver, kidney and bladder mainly), and cardiovascular and neurological effects. The estimated number of people in Bangladesh in 1998 exposed to arsenic concentrations above 0.05 mg/l is 28–35 million, and the number of those exposed to more than 0.01 mg/l is 46–57 million. The estimated number of people in West Bengal, India (the border province to Bangladesh), in 1997 actually using arsenic-rich water is more than 1 million for concentrations above 0.05 mg/l and is 1.3 million for concentrations above 0.01 mg/l. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has estimated that 13 million of the US population are exposed to arsenic in drinking water at 0.01 mg/l. The situation has prevailed for more than 10 years and is more severe now. The USEPA lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water arsenic from 50 to 10 μg/l in 2001 based on international data analysis and research. This recommendation is now on hold. The level of 10 ppb become standard in the European Union (EU) in 2001. Arsenic may be found in water flowing through arsenic-rich rocks. The source is diverse. These include the earth's crust, introduced into water through the dissociation of minerals and ores, industrial effluents to water, combustion of fossil fuels and seafoods. Arsenic-removal methods are coagulation (ferric sulfate, ferrous sulfate, ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate, copper sulfate, and calcium hydroxide as coagulants), adsorption (activated carbon, activated alumina, activated bauxite) ion exchange, bio-sorption, etc.  相似文献

Adsorption of As(III) from aqueous solutions by iron oxide-coated sand   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Arsenic is a toxic element and may be found in natural waters as well as in industrial waters. Leaching of arsenic from industrial wastewater into groundwater may cause significant contamination, which requires proper treatment before its use as drinking water. The present study describes removal of arsenic(III) on iron oxide-coated sand in batch studies conducted as a function of pH, time, initial arsenic concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The results were compared with those for uncoated sand. The adsorption data fitted well in the Langmuir model at different initial concentration of As(III) at 20 g/l fixed adsorbent dose. Maximum adsorption of As(III) for coated sand is found to be much higher (28.57 microg/g) than that for uncoated sand (5.63 microg/g) at pH 7.5 in 2 h. The maximum As(III) removal efficiency achieved is 99% for coated sand at an adsorbent dose of 20 g/l with initial As(III) concentration of 100 microg/l in batch studies. Column studies have also been carried out with 400 microg/l arsenic (pH 7.5) by varying the contact time, filtration rate, and bed depth. Results of column studies demonstrated that at a filtration rate of 4 ml/min the maximum removal of As(III) observed was 94% for coated sand in a contact time of 2 h. The results observed in batch and column studies indicate that iron oxide-coated sand is a suitable adsorbent for reducing As(III) concentration to the limit (50 microg/l) recommended by Indian Standards for Drinking Water.  相似文献

Bioaccumulation and biomethylation of inorganic arsenic were investigated in a three-step fresh-water food chain consisting of an autotroph (blue- green alga: Nostoc sp.), a herbivore (shrimp: Neocaridina denticulata) and a carnivore (carp: Cyprinus carpio). The autotroph, herbivore and carnivore survived in arsenic-containing water below 1000, 2 and 60 mg As(V) dm?3, respectively. Bioaccumulation of arsenate by Nostoc sp. was decreased with an increase in the nitrogen concentration of the medium. Arsenic(V) was accumulated from the water phase and part-methylated by the carp, as well as by the algae and shrimp. Arsenic was mostly accumulated in the gut of the carp. The predominant arsenical in the guts was the monomethylarsenic species. Arsenic accumulation via food in the above three-step food chain decreased by one order of magnitude and the relative concentration of methylated arsenic to the total arsenic accumulated increased successively with an elevation in the trophic level. When arsenicals were transferred via the food chain, no monomethylarsenic, or only a trace amount, was detected in the three organisms. Dimethylarsenic in the alga, both dimethyl- and trimethyl-arsenic in shrimp, and trimethyl-arsenic in carp, were the predominant methylated arsenic species, respectively.  相似文献

Arsenic is an element that exists naturally in many rocks and minerals around the world. It also accumulates in petroleum, shale, oil sands, and coal deposits as a result of biogeochemical processes, and it has been found in fly ash from the combustion of solid biofuels. Arsenic compounds in their organic and inorganic forms pose both a health and an environmental risk, and continue to be a challenge to the energy industry. The environmental fate and removal technologies of arsenic compounds are controlled to a large extent by their surface interactions with inorganic and organic adsorbents. We report thermodynamic binding constants, K(binding), from applying the triple-layer surface complexation model to adsorption isotherm and pH envelope data for dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and p-arsanilic acid (p-AsA) on hematite and goethite. Ligand exchange reactions were constructed based on the interpretation of ATR-FTIR spectra of DMA and p-AsA surface complexes. Surface coverage of adsorbates was quantified in situ from the spectral component at 840 cm(-1). The best fit to the DMA adsorption data was obtained using outer-sphere complex formation, whereas for p-AsA, the best fit was obtained using two monodentate inner-sphere surface complexes. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to improving modeling tools used by environmental regulators and the energy sector for optimum control of arsenic content in fuels.  相似文献

Soil collected from a disused cattle dip in northern New South Wales was studied with the aim of developing an inexpensive, yet effective method for quantitative determination of arsenic(III), arsenic(V) and total organic arsenic in a contaminated soil. Hydrochloric acid extractions were used as a method for removal of the arsenic from the soil in a form suitable for speciation. It was found that the extraction efficiency varied with the ratio of soil to acid, and the concentration of the acid. Arsenic(III), as arsenic trichloride, was selectively extracted into chloroform from a solution highly concentrated in hydrochloric acid. This was followed by back-extraction of the arsenic into water. Total inorganic arsenic was determined in a similar manner after the reduction of arsenic(V) to the trivalent state with potassium iodide. Arsenic(V) was determined by the difference between the results for arsenic(III) and total inorganic arsenic. All analyses for the various arsenic species were performed by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectroscopy; concentrations of total arsenic in the soil were confirmed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. It was found that all the arsenic in the soil was present as inorganic arsenic in the pentavalent state. This reflects the ability of arsenic to interchange between species, since the original species in cattle dipping solution is arsenic(III).  相似文献

Inorganic arsenic, a term which encompasses both As (III) and As (V) species, constitutes the highest toxicological risk associated with arsenic in water in contrast to the organic arsenic species. Different determination methods of inorganic arsenic have been developed over 40 years providing timely and efficient risk assessments of inorganic arsenic contamination world wide. The current report gives an overview of more than 100 papers, regarding existing methods for analysis of As (III) and As (V) in water, including various spectroscopic, ICP and electrochemical techniques. Recent field portable analytical applications are also reviewed.  相似文献

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with high-resolution sector field ICP-MS was applied to the speciation of arsenic in environmental samples collected from the Moira watershed, Ontario, Canada. Arsenic contamination in Moira River and Moira Lake from historic gold mine operations is of increasing environmental concern to the local community. In this study, the current arsenic contamination status in water, sediment, and plants was investigated. Elevated levels of arsenic in the surface water of up to 75 ng mL(-1) in Moira River and 50 ng mL(-1) in Moira Lake were detected, 98% of which was present as arsenate. High concentrations of arsenic (>300 ng mL(-1)), mainly present as arsenite, were detected in sediment porewaters. A sediment profile of As from the West basin of Moira Lake showed lower As concentrations compared with data from the 1990s. An optimized extraction procedure using a phosphoric acid-ascorbic acid mixture demonstrated that an unknown "As-complex" which may consist of As, sulfide and organic matter is potentially responsible for the release of arsenite from the sediment to the overlying water column. Arsenic concentrations in plant samples ranged from 2.6 to 117 mg kg(-1), dry weight. Accumulation of arsenic was observed in submerged plants collected from Moira River and Moira Lake. Only a small part of the arsenic (6.3-16.1%) in the plants was extractable with methanol-water (9:1), and most of this arsenic (70-93%) was inorganic arsenic. A variety of organic arsenic compounds, including simple methylated compounds (methylarsonic acid and dimethylarsinic acid), trimethylarsine oxide, and tetramethylarsonium cation were detected at trace levels. No arsenobetaine and arsenocholine was found in any plant sample. An unknown compound, most probably an arsenosugar was detected in the two submerged plants, coontail ( Ceratophyllum demersum) and long-stemmed waterwort ( Elatine triandra). These submerged plants are constantly exposed to high arsenic concentrations in the surrounding water. Apparently, they are able to grow in this environment without invoking the same biochemical defence known from marine algae to detoxify inorganic arsenic. The detoxification mechanism of these plants remains unknown.  相似文献

Arsenic(V) and arsenic(III) can be separated, by ion-exclusion chromatography, in solutions containing iron and sulphuric acid. Iron is removed by ion-exchange before the speciation of arsenic, with phosphoric acid as the eluent. The separated arsenic(V) and arsenic(III) are measured spectrophotometrically in the ultraviolet region at a wavelength of 195 mn. Arsenic(V) and arsenic(III) can be determined at concentrations > or = 3 mg/1. The relative standard deviations are 1.3% for arsenic(V) and 0.9% for arsenic(III), at the 10 mg/1. level. The time required for the separation of the inorganic arsenic species is 11 min.  相似文献

Two of the core tasks of the European Union Reference Laboratory for Heavy Metals in Feed and Food (EU-RL-HM) are to provide advice to the Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) on scientific matters and to organise proficiency tests among appointed National Reference Laboratories. This article presents the results of the 12th proficiency test organised by the EU-RL-HM (IMEP-112) that focused on the determination of total and inorganic arsenic in wheat, vegetable food and algae. The test items used in this exercise were: wheat sampled in a field with a high concentration of arsenic in the soil, spinach (SRM 1570a from NIST) and an algae candidate reference material. Participation in this exercise was open to laboratories from all around the world to be able to judge the state of the art of the determination of total and, more in particular, inorganic arsenic in several food commodities. Seventy-four laboratories from 31 countries registered to the exercise; 30 of them were European National Reference Laboratories. The assigned values for IMEP-112 were provided by a group of seven laboratories expert in the field of arsenic speciation analysis in food. Laboratory results were rated with z and ζ scores (zeta scores) in accordance with ISO 13528. Around 85?% of the participants performed satisfactorily for inorganic arsenic in vegetable food and 60?% did for inorganic arsenic in wheat, but only 20?% of the laboratories taking part in the exercise were able to report satisfactory results in the algae test material.  相似文献

Driven by the significant need for characterization of the chemical speciation of arsenic in food, this work developed a method for rapid determination of four common arsenic species, namely, arsenite, arsenate, monomethyl arsenic acid, and dimethyl arsenic acid, in vegetables using microwave‐assisted extraction, followed by detection with high‐performance liquid chromatography hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry. Initial screening results showed that microwave‐assisted extraction using 1% HNO3 exhibited the highest overall efficiencies for all arsenic species without causing significant degradation of the organic ones. With the aid of response surface methodology, the optimum conditions established for extraction of arsenic species from vegetables were: 500 mg of freeze‐dried vegetable sample, extracted by closed vessel microwave‐assisted extraction using 10 mL of 2% v/v HNO3 at 90°C for 17 min. Application of the method in the analysis of 24 market vegetable samples indicates that the extraction efficiencies for total arsenic species were in the range of 91.4–106%. Arsenite and arsenate were found to be the predominant arsenic species in the vegetables, which suggests that vegetable consumption could be an important route of inorganic arsenic exposure for the population with a heavy vegetable diet in arsenic polluted regions.  相似文献

A recently developed and validated method for simultaneous determination of 17 inorganic and organic arsenic compounds in marine biota has been successfully applied to routine analysis of different food products, including fish, shellfish, edible algae, rice, and other types of grain. During one year, approximately 250 food samples were analyzed, mostly fish and rice. Long-term stability and robustness of the system was observed and reproducible results for certified reference materials were ensured by means of control charts. The separation was performed by ion-pair chromatography on an anion-exchange column to separate anionic, neutral, and cationic arsenic species in one chromatographic run. Hyphenation to ICP–MS allowed element-specific and sensitive detection of the different arsenic species with a detection limit as low as 8 ng As L–1 in the sample extract, which is equivalent to 2 ng As g–1 in the original sample. Special emphasis was laid on the analysis of marine algae and rice samples. These food types can contain elevated levels of the very toxic inorganic arsenic species (up to 90% in rice) and therefore are the focus of interest in the food industry. In marine algae, inorganic arsenic was mainly present as arsenate whereas in rice arsenite predominated.  相似文献

Arsenic contamination of natural waters is a worldwide concern, as the drinking water supplies for large populations can have high concentrations of arsenic. Traditional techniques to detect arsenic in natural water samples can be costly and time-consuming; therefore, robust and inexpensive methods to detect arsenic in water are highly desirable. Additionally, methods for detecting arsenic in the field have been greatly sought after. This article focuses on the use of bacteria-based assays as an emerging method that is both robust and inexpensive for the detection of arsenic in groundwater both in the field and in the laboratory. The arsenic detection elements in bacteria-based bioassays are biosensor–reporter strains; genetically modified strains of, e.g., Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Rhodopseudomonas palustris. In response to the presence of arsenic, such bacteria produce a reporter protein, the amount or activity of which is measured in the bioassay. Some of these bacterial biosensor–reporters have been successfully utilized for comparative in-field analyses through the use of simple solution-based assays, but future methods may concentrate on miniaturization using fiberoptics or microfluidics platforms. Additionally, there are other potential emerging bioassays for the detection of arsenic in natural waters including nematodes and clams.  相似文献
