On Lyapunov-type inequality for quasilinear systems

In this paper, we sketch some recent developments in the theory of Lyapunov-type inequalities and present some new results relating to a quasilinear system, special cases of which contain some well-known differential equations such as half-linear and linear equations. Our result generalize the Lyapunov-type inequality given in [18].     

A note on the second largest eigenvalue of the laplacian matrix of a graph

In this note, a lower bound for the second largest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of a graph is given in terms of the second largest degree of the graph.     

A note on Hardy’s inequalities with boundary singularities

Let Ω be a smooth bounded domain in R^N with N≥1. In this paper we study the Hardy-Poincaré inequalities with weight function singular at the boundary of Ω. In particular we give sufficient conditions so that the best constant is achieved.     

A note on quasi-equilibrium problems

The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of solutions of quasi-equilibrium problems without any generalized monotonicity assumption. Additionally, we give some applications.

A note on “Some inequalities in inner product spaces related to the generalized triangle inequality” by S.S. Dragomir et al.

In this note, we present an affirmative answer to a question presented in the paper “Some inequalities in inner product spaces related to the generalized triangle inequality” by S.S. Dragomir et al. [Appl. Math. Comput. 217 (18) (2011) 7462-7468].     

A note on the perturbation analysis for the generalized Cholesky factorization

In this note, we consider the perturbation analysis for the generalized Cholesky factorization further. The conditions for the main theorems of the paper [W.-G. Wang, J.-X. Zhao, Perturbation analysis for the generalized Cholesky factorization, Appl. Math. Comput. 147 (2004) 601-606] are weakened by using an alternative method. Moreover, some new perturbation bounds are also derived.     

A NOTE ON THE BACKWARD ERRORS FOR INVERSE EIGENVALUE PROBLEMS

In this note,we consider the backward errors for more general inverse eigenvalus prob-lems by extending Sun‘‘‘‘s approach.The optimal backward errors defined for diagonal-ization matrix inverse eigenvalue problem with respect to an approximate solution,and the upper and lower bounds are derived for the optimal backward errors.The results may be useful for testing the stability of practical algorithms.     

A note on Turán type and mean inequalities for the Kummer function

Turán-type inequalities for combinations of Kummer functions involving Φ(a±ν,c±ν,x) and Φ(a,c±ν,x) have been recently investigated in [Á. Baricz, Functional inequalities involving Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind, Expo. Math. 26 (3) (2008) 279-293; M.E.H. Ismail, A. Laforgia, Monotonicity properties of determinants of special functions, Constr. Approx. 26 (2007) 1-9]. In the current paper, we resolve the corresponding Turán-type and closely related mean inequalities for the additional case involving Φ(a±ν,c,x). The application to modeling credit risk is also summarized.     

Note on Shim and Kim’s lower bounds for scheduling on identical parallel machines to minimize total tardiness

This note introduces a new lower bound for the problem of scheduling on parallel identical machines to minimize total tardiness that is based on the concepts used in the two lower bounds developed by Shim and Kim [Shim, S.O., Kim, Y.D., 2007. Scheduling on parallel identical machines to minimize total tardiness. European Journal of Operational Research 177, 135–146]. The note shows that the new lower bound dominates the three lower bounds used in Shim and Kim’s branch-and-bound algorithm and can be used in place of these lower bounds to lower the enumeration required.     

A note on Chrystal’s equation

The exact, explicit form of the transcendental solution of Chrystal’s equation, a first order nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) of degree two, is derived in terms of the Lambert W-function. It is shown that this case of the general solution is dual-valued over a finite interval and that, for a special case of the coefficients, its zeros involve the Golden ratio. Additionally, a number of applications involving special cases of this ODE are noted and the main properties of the Lambert W-function are briefly reviewed.

A note on Fung-Fu's theorem

The axiomatic approach to rational decision malting in a fuzzy environment proposed by Fung and Fu (1975) lays down a too restrictive family of aggregation rules. Because of such axioms, the independence of the size of the groups under aggregation is assumed; moveover, in a general problem, these groups are fuzzy sets.     

A note on Bellman-Gronwall's inequality

In the present note a multidimensional analogue of Bellman-Gronwall's inequality is proved.     

A note on three-parameter families and generalized convex functions

The concept of generalized convex functions introduced by Beckenbach [E.F. Beckenbach, Generalized convex functions, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 43 (1937) 363–371] is extended to the two-dimensional case. Using three-parameter families, we define generalized convex (midconvex, M-convex) functions and show some continuity properties of them.     

A note on kernels and Sperner’s Lemma

The kernel-solvability of perfect graphs was first proved by Boros and Gurvich, and later Aharoni and Holzman gave a shorter proof. Both proofs were based on Scarf’s Lemma. In this note we show that a very simple proof can be given using a polyhedral version of Sperner’s Lemma. In addition, we extend the Boros–Gurvich theorem to h-perfect graphs and to a more general setting.     

Localization of Generalized Normal Maps and Stability of Variational Inequalities in Reflexive Banach Spaces

In this paper, we introduce a localized version of generalized normal maps as well as generalized natural mappings. By using these concepts, we study continuity properties of the solution map of parametric variational inequalities in reflexive Banach spaces. This localization permits us to deal with variational conditions posed on sets that may not be convex and to establish existence and continuity of solutions. We also establish homeomorhisms between the solution set of variational inequalities and the solution set of generalized normal maps. Using these homeomorphisms and the degree theory, we show that the solution map of parametric variational inequalities is lower semicontinuous. Our results extend some results of Robinson (Set-Valued Anal 12:259–274, 2004). The authors wish to express their sincere appreciation to Professor Stephen M.
