Using the method of “molecular probes” in gas chromatography, glass-transitions in mixtures of poly(methyl methacrylate) with poly(vinyl chloride) are found. The strong variation of Tg for poly (methyl methacrylate) in mixtures with more than 20% of that polymer suggests interactions although Tg for poly(vinyl chloride) remains constant. The existence of a single Tg in mixtures with less than 20% poly(methyl methacrylate), on the other hand, suggests possible compatibility in these mixtures.  相似文献

We clarified the birefringence properties of poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(ethyl methacrylate), poly(isobutyl methacrylate), poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate), poly(isopropyl methacrylate), and poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate). We demonstrated that the conformational change in polymer molecules that causes orientational birefringence differs from that causing photoelastic birefringence. Orientational birefringence depends mainly on the orientation of the main chains of the methacrylate polymers above Tg. On the other hand, photoelastic birefringence in elastic deformation below Tg depends mainly on the orientation of the side chains while the main chains are scarcely oriented. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glass transition temperatures Tg of methyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate copolymers obtained by means of atom‐transfer radical polymerization are measured using differential scanning calorimetry. Due the nature of this polymerization method an increase in molecular weight is produced as the reaction progresses, which gives rise to an increase in Tg. Simultaneously, a composition gradient with the enrichment of butyl acrylate causes a decrease in Tg. These opposite effects almost compensate each other and, therefore, no influence on the molecular weight at n < 10000 is found. This fact allows the application of the Johnston's equation and the Mayo‐Lewis terminal model to describe and predict the variation in Tg with copolymer conversion for the copolymers and under the experimental conditions investigated.  相似文献

Commercial polydisperse atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibits a decreased glass transition temperature (Tg) when the film thickness is less than ~60 nm, whereas more model atactic PMMA shows an increased Tg in thin films supported on clean silicon wafers. NMR indicates no difference in tacticity, so the divergent thin film behavior appears related to the relative distribution of molecular mass. Extraction of some low molecular weight PMMA components from the commercial sample results in a significant modification of the thin film Tg compared with the initial PMMA fraction. The extracted sample exhibits initially a slight decrease in Tg as the film thickness is reduced below ~60 nm, but then Tg appears to increase for films thinner than 20 nm. These results illustrate the sensitivity of polymer thin film properties to low‐molecular mass components and could explain some of the contradictory reports on the Tg of polymer thin films that exist in the literature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixtures of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and plasticizer were made by γ-irradiation of mixtures of methyl methacrylate with diethyl phthalate or with dioctyl phthalate. The glass transition temperature Tg was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Plots of Tg versus volume fraction of PMMA were found to conform to the simple free volume theory of Kelley and Bueche, using physical property values either reported in the literature or else calculated by Bondi's procedures.  相似文献

The ceric ion-initiated graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wood cellulose was found to depend on the concentrations of initiator, monomer, and cellulose. The structure of cellulose—methyl methacrylate graft copolymers was studied by hydrolyzing away the cellulose backbone to isolate the grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) branches. The molecular weights and molecular weight distributions of the grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) were determined by using gel-permeation chromatography. The number-average (M?n) molecular weights ranged from 36 000 to 160 000 and the polydispersity ratios (M?w/M?n) varied from 4.0 to 7.0. The grafting frequency or the number of poly(methyl methacrylate) branches per cellulose chain calculated from the per cent grafting and molecular weight data varied from 0.38 to 3.2. The structure of cellulose—methyl methacrylate graft copolymers and the effect of stepwise addition of initiator on the structure are discussed.  相似文献

The thermal decomposition and the glass transition temperature Tg of poly(phenyl methacrylate) (PPhMA) and poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (PcHU) were studied with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The undecomposed and decomposed polymers were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) for molecular weight distributions and by DSC for changes in the thermal properties, e.g., Tg. For all values of weight-loss α, the thermal stability of the polymers follows the order: Poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) = PcHMA > poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) > PPhMA > poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBuMA) > poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBuMA). In the depolymerization reactions that occur during the isothermal decomposition of PPhMA, there is no specific preference for longer or shorter chains although a minor fraction of the volatilized fraction with an [Mbar]w 10?5 of 2.5 and an [Mbar] n |MX 10.?5 of 1.5 does undergo chain recombination yielding high molecular weight products with an Mw × 10?6 of 1.35 and an Mn × 10?6 of 1.0 to 1.23. In the case of PcHMA, depolymerizations did show a preference for longer chains. No chain recombination, however, was found to take place. Activation energy of decomposition for substituted poly-methacrylates follows the order: PnBuMA = PiBuMA >; PEMA >; PcHMA >; PMMA >; PPhMA. Tg e values of PPhMA samples varied from 362 K for undecomposed polymers to 396 K for a polymer treated at 300° C. The literature value of 383 K does fall within this range. In the case of PcHMA, an average Tge of 356 f 6.0 ± is not far removed from the reported value of 359 K.  相似文献

New ether dimer (ED‐Eh) and diester (EHDE) derivatives of α‐(hydroxymethyl)acrylate, each having two 2‐ethylhexyl side chains, and an amine‐linked di(2‐ethylhexyl)acrylate (AL‐Eh), having three 2‐ethylhexyl side chains, were synthesized and (co)polymerized to evaluate the effects of differences in the structures of the monomers on final (co)polymer properties, particularly glass transition temperature, Tg. The free radical polymerizations of these monomers yielded high‐molecular–weight polymers. Cyclopolymer formation of ED‐Eh and AL‐Eh was confirmed by 13C NMR analysis and the cyclization efficiencies were found to be very high (~100%). Copolymers of ED‐Eh, EHDE, and AL‐Eh with methyl methacrylate (MMA) showed significant Tg decreases over poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) due to 2‐ethylhexyl side groups causing “internal” plasticization. Comparison of the Tg's of the copolymers of 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate, ED‐Eh, EHDE, and AL‐Eh with MMA revealed that the impacts of these monomers on depression of Tg's are identical with respect to the total concentration of the pendent groups. This is consistent with an earlier study involving copolymers of monomers comprising one and two octadecyl side groups with MMA. That is, the magnitude of decrease in Tg's was quantitatively related to the number of the 2‐ethylhexyl pendent groups in the copolymers rather than their placement on the same or randomly incorporated repeat units. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanoscale poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization. Different from particles made by traditional microemulsion polymerization, the particles prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization were multichain systems. PMMA samples, whether prepared by the traditional procedure or the modified procedure, had glass-transition temperatures (Tg's) greater than 120 °C and were rich in syndiotactic content (55–61% rr). After the samples were dissolved in CHCl3, there were decreases in the Tg values for the polymers prepared by the traditional procedure and those prepared by the modified process. However, a more evident Tg decrease was observed in the former than in the latter; still, for both, Tg was greater than 120 °C. Polarizing optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicated that some ordered regions formed in the particles prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization. The addition of a chain-transfer agent resulted in a decrease in both the syndiotacticity and Tg through decreasing polymer molecular weight. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanostructured amorphous bulk polymer samples were produced by processing them with small molecule hosts. Urea (U) and gamma‐cyclodextrin (γ‐CD) were utilized to form crystalline inclusion compounds (ICs) with low and high molecular weight as‐received (asr‐) poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and their blends as included guests. Upon careful removal of the host crystalline U and γ‐CD lattices, nanostructured coalesced (c‐) bulk PVAc, PMMA, and PVAc/PMMA blend samples were obtained, and their glass‐transition temperatures, Tgs, measured. In addition, non‐stoichiometric (n‐s)‐IC samples of each were formed with γ‐CD as the host. The Tgs of the un‐threaded, un‐included portions of their chains were observed as a function of their degree of inclusion. In all the cases, these nanostructured PVAc and PMMA samples exhibited Tgs elevated above those of their as‐received and solution‐cast samples. Based on their comparison, several conclusions were reached concerning how their molecular weights, the organization of chains in their coalesced samples, and the degree of constraint experienced by un‐included portions of their chains in (n‐s)‐γ‐CD‐IC samples with different stoichiometries affect their chain mobilities and resultant Tgs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The thermal decomposition and the glass transition temperatures of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBuMA) were studied with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The undecomposed and decomposed polymers were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) for molecular weight distributions and by DSC for changes in the thermal properties and glass transition temperatures, T. In the isothermal decomposition of PMMA and PiBuMA, depolymerization reactions exclusively are operative. During low temperature decompositions, longer PMMA chains depolymerize first. These are followed by the shorter chains. In the case of PiBuMA, the shorter chains depolymerize first. Some of these undergo chain recombinations to yield very high molecular weight products. For identical values of weight loss, the respective decomposition temperatures for PiBuMA are 40 to 70 K lower than those for PMMA. The activation energies of decomposition (42 kJ/mol for PMMA and 67 kJ/mol for PiBuMA) have been found to be lower than those reported in the literature. Although Tg of PiBuMA (331 K) agrees well with the literature value (326 K), Tg of atactic PMMA (394 K) is higher than the reported value (378 K).  相似文献

Graded‐index plastic optical fibers, composed of doped polymers, have advantages over conventional glass optical fibers, but need to be developed further for practical application. Here, a variety of aromatic sulfide dopants were synthesized, and their effects on the refractive indexes and glass transition temperatures (Tg) of poly(methyl methacrylate) and methyl 2‐chloroacrylate/2,2,2‐trichloroethyl methacrylate copolymers were studied. While polymers containing large dopants exhibited relatively high refractive indices, their Tg values were low, making these materials unsuitable for graded‐index plastic optical fiber applications. Six dopants yielded polymers that exhibited higher Tg values than the conventionally used (diphenyl sulfide)‐doped polymer. The dopant dibenzothiophene, in particular, yielded polymers with the highest refractive indexes and Tg values, and polymers containing (phenylthio)benzene dopants also performed well. The soapless emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA) containing various concentrations of sodium methacrylate (NaMA) or methacrylic acid (MMA) is studied. The hydrosoluble yields in final latexes are not larger than 1.3–5%, depending on the concentration of NaMA used. Below 25% conversion, the change of conversion with reaction time follows the square rule and the particle size is proportional to the 2/3 power of time. Above 25% conversion, serious gel effect occurs, and the conversion follows the seventh power on time and the growth of particle diameter obeys the 2.5 power on time. The multiple glass transition (Tg) occur below 20% conversion, where monomer droplets exist. NaMA added induces more Tgs. The effect of molecular weight of the copolymers obtained on Tg (even the molecular weight distributions were shown to be shouldertype bimodal) is estimated to be insignificant. Thus, the heterogeneity of copolymer compositions for multiple Tgs is ascribed to be caused from neither the molecular weight heterogeneity nor the shifts in compositions due to the difference of the monomer reactivity ratios. Referring to the results mentioned, we assume the sublayer surrounding the particle, rich with SO4? and COO? groups, and the concentration gradients of monomers in particles to illustrate particle morphology. In addition, the relatively hydrophilic sublayer is proposed to be closely relative with the occurrence of the composition heterogeneity in particles.  相似文献

The poly(butyl methacrylate) studied is a polymer with a normal molecular weight distribution and a relatively low molecular weight close to Mc, the critical molecular weight from the viscosity–molecular weight relation. The polymer was subjected to uniaxial extension and shear over a temperature range which included Tg. It was found that in the region of Tg an increase in applied stress is accompanied by a decrease both in the temperature shift factor aT and in the activation energy for relaxation and rupture of polymer melts. Close attention is given to the long-term durability of the polymer. As is expected in the temperature range below Tg, its dependence on the stress is exponential, whereas at temperatures above Tg a power law fits the data. In the latter case a log-log plot of the long-term durability versus stress can be represented by two intersecting straight lines which can be replotted as a generalized straight line if the long-term durability values are normalized by the viscosity.  相似文献

The differential microemulsion polymerization technique was used to synthesize the nanoparticles of glycidyl-functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA via a two-step process, by which the amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant required was 1/217 of the monomer amount by weight and the surfactant/water ratio could be as low as 1/600. These surfactant levels are extremely low in comparison with those used in a conventional microemulsion polymerization system. The glycidyl-functionalized PMMA nanoparticles are composed of nanosized cores of high molecular weight PMMA and nano-thin shells of the random copolymer poly[(methyl methacrylate)-ran-(glycidyl methacrylate)]. The particle sizes were about 50 nm. The ratios of the glycidyl methacrylate in the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA were achieved at about 5–26 wt.%, depending on the reaction conditions. The molecular weight of glycidyl-functionalized PMMA was in the range of about 1 × 106 to 3 × 106 g mol−1. The solid content of glycidyl-functionalized PMMA increased when the amount of added glycidyl methacrylate was increased. The glycidyl-functionalized polymer on the surface of nano-seed PMMA nanoparticles was a random copolymer which was confirmed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The amounts of functionalization were investigated by the titration of the glycidyl functional group. The structure of the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA nanoparticles was investigated by means of TEM. The glycidyl-functionalized PMMA has two regions of Tg which are at around 90 °C and 125 °C, respectively, of which the first one was attributed to the poly[(methyl methacrylate)-ran-(glycidyl methacrylate)] and the second one was due to the PMMA. A core/shell structure of the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA latex nanoparticles was observed.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) and poly(ethylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) was converted into ATRP macroinitiators by reaction with chloroacetic acid and 2‐bromoisobutyric acid, respectively, and the pendant‐functionalized polyolefins were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In both cases, incorporation of the vinyl monomer into the graft copolymer increased with extent of the reaction. The controlled growth of the side chains was proved in the case of poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) by the linear increase of molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.4) of the cleaved polystyrene grafts. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2440–2448, 2000  相似文献

Segmented terpolymers, poly(alkyl methacrylate)‐g‐poly(D ‐lactide)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PLA/PDMS), were prepared with a combination of the “grafting through” technique (macromonomer method) and controlled/living radical polymerization (atom transfer radical polymerization or reversible addition–fragmentation transfer polymerization). Two synthetic pathways were used. The first was a single‐step approach in which a low‐molecular‐weight methacrylate monomer (methyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate) was copolymerized with a PLA macromonomer and a PDMS macromonomer. The second strategy was a two‐step approach in which a graft copolymer containing one macromonomer was chain‐extended by a copolymerization of the second macromonomer and the low‐molecular‐weight methacrylate. The kinetics of both synthetic approaches were investigated, showing that the polymerizations exhibited a controlled/living behavior. Furthermore, the molecular structure of the terpolymers (composition, molecular weight distribution, and microstructure) was investigated by two‐dimensional liquid chromatography. Well‐defined terpolymers with controlled branch distribution, composition (Fw,PMMA/Fw,PLA/Fw,PDMS ~ 50/30/20) molecular weight (Mn ~ 50,000 g · mol?1), and a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ~ 1.3) were prepared via both pathways. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of side-chain crystallinity on the glass transition temperatures of selected copolymers was investigated. The copolymers were selected, in part, from those whose crystallinity was treated in the preceding paper. These included the lower amorphous acrylate esters, such as methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates, together with methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, each copolymerized with n-octadecyl acrylate over the range of composition. The decline in the glass transition temperature was linear with increasing weight fraction of n-octadecyl acrylate for all systems in the composition range where the copolymers were essentially amorphous. The extrapolated Tg for the amorphous state of poly(n-octadecyl acrylate), and for amorphous poly(oleyl acrylate), was close to ?111°C. This coincided with a value previously obtained by an extrapolation of data on homologs. Beyond a critical fraction of octadecyl acrylate (0.3 to 0.5), developing side-chain crystallinity in n-octadecyl acrylate raised the glass temperature steadily for all systems, up to a value of 17-C, obtained for the crystalline homopolymer. Crystallinity did not develop in stiff copolymers until Tg was about 30°C below the melting point of the most perfect crystals. In compositionally heterogeneous copolymers incorporating vinyl stearate, blocks of crystalline units appeared to be dispersed in a glassy matrix of amorphous co-units. An empirical equation was derived which fitted the experimental data for random copolymers, over all composition ranges, with fair accuracy.  相似文献

Polymer electrolytes which are adhesive, transparent, and stable to atmospheric moisture have been prepared by blending poly(methyl methacrylate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) with poly(ethylene glycol)/LiCF3 SO3 complexes. The maximum ionic conductivities at room temperature were measured to be in the range of 10−4 to 10−5 s cm−1. The clarity of the sample was improved as the graft degree increased for all the samples studied. The graft degree of poly(methyl methacrylate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) was found to be important for the compatibility between the poly(methyl methacrylate) segments in poly(methyl methacrylate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) and the added poly(ethylene glycol), and consequently, for the ion conductivity of the polymer electrolyte. These properties make them promising candidates for polymer electrolytes in electrochromic devices. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Phenyl methacrylate and 1‐naphthyl methacrylate were polymerized in microemulsions using stearyltrimethylammonium chloride, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and a mixture of nonionic Triton surfactants to form latexes that were 20–30 nm in diameter. A temperature of 70 °C was needed to obtain polymers using thermal initiation. The tacticities of poly(phenyl methacrylate) (PPhMA) (55% rr) and poly(1‐naphthyl methacrylate) (P‐1‐NM) (47% rr) were the same as those of the polymers prepared in toluene solutions. The weight average molecular weights were 1 × 106 and 5 × 105 g/mol for PPhMA and P‐1‐NM prepared in microemulsions with very broad distributions. PPhMA samples from microemulsions and solution had the same Tg = 127 °C. P‐1‐NM from microemulsions had Tg = 145–147 °C compared with Tg = 142 °C for P‐1‐NM from solution. The molecular weights and the glass‐transition temperatures of both PPhMA and P‐1‐NM from microemulsions are substantially higher than any previously reported. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
