The following properties of the Holmes space H are established:
(i)
H has the Metric Approximation Property (MAP).
(ii)
The w-closure of the set of extreme points of the unit ball BH of the dual space H is the whole ball BH.
A family of compact subsets XU of the Urysohn space is described such that the Lipschitz-free space F(X) has a finite-dimensional decomposition and is not complemented in H.  相似文献

We investigate some subtle and interesting phenomena in the duality theory of operator spaces and operator algebras, and give several applications of the surprising fact that certain maps are always weak*-continuous on dual spaces. In particular, if X is a subspace of a C*-algebra A, and if aA satisfies aXX, then we show that the function x?ax on X is automatically weak* continuous if either (a) X is a dual operator space, or (b) a*XX and X is a dual Banach space. These results hinge on a generalization to Banach modules of Tomiyama's famous theorem on contractive projections onto a C*-subalgebra. Applications include a new characterization of the σ-weakly closed (possibly nonunital and nonselfadjoint) operator algebras, and a generalization of the theory of W*-modules to the framework of modules over such algebras. We also give a Banach module characterization of σ-weakly closed spaces of operators which are invariant under the action of a von Neumann algebra.  相似文献

By a ball-covering B of a Banach space X, we mean that B is a collection of open (or closed) balls off the origin whose union contains the unit sphere SX of X; and X is said to have the ball-covering property (BCP) provided it admits a ball-covering by countably many balls. In this note we give a natural example showing that the ball-covering property of a Banach space is not inherited by its subspaces; and we present a sharp quantitative version of the recent Fonf and Zanco renorming result saying that if the dual X of X is w separable, then for every ε>0 there exist a (1+ε)-equivalent norm on X, and an R>0 such that in this new norm SX admits a ball-covering by countably many balls of radius R. Namely, we show that R=R(ε) can be taken arbitrarily close to (1+ε)/ε, and that for X=?1[0,1] the corresponding R cannot be equal to 1/ε. This gives the sharp order of magnitude for R(ε) as ε→0.  相似文献

We call a subspace Y of a Banach space X a DBR subspace if its unit ball By admits farthest points from a dense set of points of X. In this paper, we study DBR subspaces of C(K). In the process, we study boundaries, in particular, the Choquet boundary of any general subspace of C(K). An infinite compact Hausdorff space K has no isolated point if and only if any finite co-dimensional subspace, in particular, any hyperplane is DBR in C(K). As a consequence, we show that a Banach space X is reflexive if and only if X is a DBR subspace of any superspace. As applications, we prove that any M-ideal or any closed *-subalgebra of C(K) is a DBR subspace of C(K). It follows that C(K) is ball remotal in C(K)**.  相似文献

We introduce the properties WD and BWD for the dual space of a Banach space. And then solve the dual problem for the compact approximation property (CAP): if X has the CAP and the WD, then X has the CAP. Also, we solve the three space problem for the CAP: for example, if M is a closed subspace of a Banach space such that M is complemented in X and X has the WD, then X has the CAP whenever X/M has the CAP and M has the bounded CAP. Corresponding problems for the bounded compact approximation property are also addressed.  相似文献

We study universality problems in Banach space theory. We show that if A is an analytic class, in the Effros-Borel structure of subspaces of C([0,1]), of non-universal separable Banach spaces, then there exists a non-universal separable Banach space Y, with a Schauder basis, that contains isomorphs of each member of A with the bounded approximation property. The proof is based on the amalgamation technique of a class C of separable Banach spaces, introduced in the paper. We show, among others, that there exists a separable Banach space R not containing L1(0,1) such that the indices β and rND are unbounded on the set of Baire-1 elements of the ball of the double dual R∗∗ of R. This answers two questions of H.P. Rosenthal. We also introduce the concept of a strongly bounded class of separable Banach spaces. A class C of separable Banach spaces is strongly bounded if for every analytic subset A of C there exists YC that contains all members of A up to isomorphism. We show that several natural classes of separable Banach spaces are strongly bounded, among them the class of non-universal spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of reflexive spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of spaces with a shrinking Schauder basis and the class of spaces with Schauder basis not containing a minimal Banach space X.  相似文献

It is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X, if X has the weak approximation property, then X has the metric weak approximation property. We introduce the properties WD and MWD for Banach spaces. Suppose that M is a closed subspace of a Banach space X such that M is complemented in the dual space X, where for all mM}. Then it is shown that if a Banach space X has the weak approximation property and WD (respectively, metric weak approximation property and MWD), then M has the weak approximation property (respectively, bounded weak approximation property).  相似文献

It is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X if X has the weak approximation property, then X has the metric quasi approximation property. Using this it is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X the quasi approximation property and metric quasi approximation property are inherited from X to X and for a separable and reflexive Banach space X, X having the weak approximation property, bounded weak approximation property, quasi approximation property, metric weak approximation property, and metric quasi approximation property are equivalent. Also it is shown that the weak approximation property, bounded weak approximation property, and quasi approximation property are not inherited from a Banach space X to X.  相似文献

We consider some topological characterizations of dual Banach spaces that admit an equivalent dual average locally uniformly rotund norm and provide a criterion for such renorming which involves the class of σ-slicely continuous maps.  相似文献

We study when a Banach space with absolute norm may have polynomial numerical indices equal to one. In the real case, we show that a Banach space X with absolute norm, which has the Radon-Nikodým property or is Asplund, satisfies n(2)(X)<1 unless it is one-dimensional. In the complex case, we show that the only Banach spaces X with absolute norm and the Radon-Nikodým property which satisfy n(2)(X)=1 are the spaces . Also, the only Asplund complex space X with absolute norm which satisfies n(2)(X)=1 is c0(Λ).  相似文献

This paper is devoted to showing that Asplund operators with range in a uniform Banach algebra have the Bishop–Phelps–Bollobás property, i.e., they are approximated by norm attaining Asplund operators at the same time that a point where the approximated operator almost attains its norm is approximated by a point at which the approximating operator attains it. To prove this result we use the weak-to-norm fragmentability of weak-compact subsets of the dual of Asplund spaces and we need to observe a Urysohn type result producing peak complex-valued functions in uniform algebras that are small outside a given open set and whose image is inside a Stolz region.  相似文献

Given an injective bounded linear operator T:X→Y between Banach spaces, we study the Borel measurability of the inverse map T−1:TX→X. A remarkable result of Saint-Raymond (Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 26 (1976) 211-256) states that if X is separable, then the Borel class of T−1 is α if, and only if, X∗ is the αth iterated sequential weak∗-closure of T∗Y∗ for some countable ordinal α. We show that Saint-Raymond's result holds with minor changes for arbitrary Banach spaces if we assume that T has certain property named co-σ-discreteness after Hansell (Proc. London Math. Soc. 28 (1974) 683-699). As an application, we show that the Borel class of the inverse of a co-σ-discrete operator T can be estimated by the image of the unit ball or the restrictions of T to separable subspaces of X. Our results apply naturally when X is a WCD Banach space since in this case any injective bounded linear operator defined on X is automatically co-σ-discrete.  相似文献

It is well known that if (X,q) is an asymmetric normed linear space, then the function qs defined on X by qs(x)=max{q(x),q(−x)}, is a norm on the linear space X. However, the lack of symmetry in the definition of the asymmetric norm q yields an algebraic asymmetry in the dual space of (X,q). This fact establishes a significant difference with the standard results on duality that hold in the case of locally convex spaces. In this paper we study some aspects of a reflexivity theory in the setting of asymmetric normed linear spaces. In particular, we obtain a version of the Goldstine Theorem to these spaces which is applied to prove, among other results, a characterization of reflexive asymmetric normed linear spaces.  相似文献

Let (X,τ) be a topological space and let ρ be a metric defined on X. We shall say that (X,τ) is fragmented by ρ if whenever ε>0 and A is a nonempty subset of X there is a τ-open set U such that UA≠∅ and ρ−diam(UA)<ε. In this paper we consider the notion of fragmentability, and its generalisation σ-fragmentability, in the setting of topological groups and metric-valued function spaces. We show that in the presence of Baireness fragmentability of a topological group is very close to metrizability of that group. We also show that for a compact Hausdorff space X, σ-fragmentability of (C(X),‖⋅) implies that the space Cp(X;M) of all continuous functions from X into a metric space M, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence on X, is fragmented by a metric whose topology is at least as strong as the uniform topology on C(X;M). The primary tool used is that of topological games.  相似文献

Let G be an amenable group, let X be a Banach space and let π:GB(X) be a bounded representation. We show that if the set is γ-bounded then π extends to a bounded homomorphism w:C(G)→B(X) on the group C-algebra of G. Moreover w is necessarily γ-bounded. This extends to the Banach space setting a theorem of Day and Dixmier saying that any bounded representation of an amenable group on Hilbert space is unitarizable. We obtain additional results and complements when G=Z, R or T, and/or when X has property (α).  相似文献

Let X be a (real or complex) Banach space and 1<p,p′<∞ such that 1/p+1/p′=1. Then , the injective tensor product of Lp[0,1] and X, has the Radon-Nikodym property (resp. the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the near Radon-Nikodym property, contains no copy of c0, is weakly sequentially complete) if and only if X has the same property and each continuous linear operator from Lp[0,1] to X is compact.  相似文献

By a well-known result of Grothendieck, a Banach space X has the approximation property if and only if, for every Banach space Y, every weak∗-weak continuous compact operator T:X∗→Y can be uniformly approximated by finite rank operators from XY. We prove the following “metric” version of this criterion: X has the approximation property if and only if, for every Banach space Y, every weak∗-weak continuous weakly compact operator T:X∗→Y can be approximated in the strong operator topology by operators of norm ?‖T‖ from XY. As application, easier alternative proofs are given for recent criteria of approximation property due to Lima, Nygaard and Oja.  相似文献

In this paper we study equivalent formulations of the DP? Pp (1 < p < ∞). We show that X has the DP? Pp if and only if every weakly-p-Cauchy sequence in X is a limited subset of X. We give su?cient conditions on Banach spaces X and Y so that the projective tensor product X ?π Y, the dual (X ?? Y)? of their injective tensor product, and the bidual (X ?π Y)?? of their projective tensor product, do not have the DP Pp, 1 < p < ∞. We also show that in some cases, the projective and the injective tensor products of two spaces do not have the DP? Pp, 1 < p < ∞.  相似文献

A local dual of a Banach space X is a closed subspace of X that satisfies the properties that the principle of local reflexivity assigns to X as a subspace of X∗∗. Here we introduce a technical property which characterizes the local dual spaces of a Banach space and allows us to show new examples of local dual spaces.  相似文献

Let A and B be (not necessarily unital or closed) standard operator algebras on complex Banach spaces X and Y, respectively. For a bounded linear operator A on X, the peripheral spectrum σπ(A) of A is the set σπ(A)={zσ(A):|z|=maxωσ(A)|ω|}, where σ(A) denotes the spectrum of A. Assume that Φ:AB is a map the range of which contains all operators of rank at most two. It is shown that the map Φ satisfies the condition that σπ(BAB)=σπ(Φ(B)Φ(A)Φ(B)) for all A,BA if and only if there exists a scalar λC with λ3=1 and either there exists an invertible operator TB(X,Y) such that Φ(A)=λTAT-1 for every AA; or there exists an invertible operator TB(X,Y) such that Φ(A)=λTAT-1 for every AA. If X=H and Y=K are complex Hilbert spaces, the maps preserving the peripheral spectrum of the Jordan skew semi-triple product BAB are also characterized. Such maps are of the form A?UAU or A?UAtU, where UB(H,K) is a unitary operator, At denotes the transpose of A in an arbitrary but fixed orthonormal basis of H.  相似文献
