The effect of diversity on dynamics of coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons on complex networks is numerically investigated, where each neuron is subjected to an external subthreshold signal. With the diversity the network is a mixture of excitable and oscillatory neurons, and the diversity is determined by the variance of the system's parameter. The complex network is constructed by randomly adding long-range connections (shortcuts) on a nearest-neighbouring coupled one-dimensional chain. Numerical results show that external signals are maximally magnified at an intermediate value of the diversity, as in the case of well-known stochastic resonance, burthermore, the effects of the number of shortcuts and coupled strength on the diversity-induced phenomena are also discussed. These findings exhibit that the diversity may play a constructive role in response to external signal, and highlight the importance of the diversity on such complex networks.  相似文献

The Hodgkin-Huxley (H-H) neuron model driven by stimuli just above threshold shows a noise-induced response delay with respect to time to the first spike for a certain range of noise strengths, an effect called “noise delayed decay” (NDD). We study the response time of a network of coupled H-H neurons, and investigate how the NDD can be affected by the connection topology of the network and the coupling strength. We show that the NDD effect exists for weak and intermediate coupling strengths, whereas it disappears for strong coupling strength regardless of the connection topology. We also show that although the network structure has very little effect on the NDD for a weak coupling strength, the network structure plays a key role for an intermediate coupling strength by decreasing the NDD effect with the increasing number of random shortcuts, and thus provides an additional operating regime, that is absent in the regular network, in which the neurons may also exploit a spike time code.  相似文献

We study the phenomenon of stochastic resonance on Newman-Watts small-world networks consisting of biophysically realistic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons with a tunable intensity of intrinsic noise via voltage-gated ion channels embedded in neuronal membranes. Importantly thereby, the subthreshold periodic driving is introduced to a single neuron of the network, thus acting as a pacemaker trying to impose its rhythm on the whole ensemble. We show that there exists an optimal intensity of intrinsic ion channel noise by which the outreach of the pacemaker extends optimally across the whole network. This stochastic resonance phenomenon can be further amplified via fine-tuning of the small-world network structure, and depends significantly also on the coupling strength among neurons and the driving frequency of the pacemaker. In particular, we demonstrate that the noise-induced transmission of weak localized rhythmic activity peaks when the pacemaker frequency matches the intrinsic frequency of subthreshold oscillations. The implications of our findings for weak signal detection and information propagation across neural networks are discussed.  相似文献

We study the collective temporal coherence of a small-world network of coupled stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley neurons. Previous reports have shown that network coherence in response to a subthreshold periodic stimulus, thus subthreshold signal encoding, is maximal for a specific range of the fraction of randomly added shortcuts relative to all possible shortcuts, p, added to an initially locally connected network. We investigated this behavior further as a function of channel noise, stimulus frequency and coupling strength. We show that temporal coherence peaks when the frequency of the external stimulus matches that of the intrinsic subthreshold oscillations. We also find that large values of the channel noise, corresponding to small cell sizes, increases coherence for optimal values of the stimulus frequency and the topology parameter p. For smaller values of the channel noise, thus larger cell sizes, network coherence becomes insensitive to these parameters. Finally, the degree of coupling between neurons in the network modulates the sensitivity of coherence to topology, such that for stronger coupling the peak coherence is achieved with fewer added short cuts.  相似文献

Stochastic Resonance in Neural Systems with Small-World Connections   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
We study the stochastic resonance (SR) in Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neural systems with small-world (SW) connections under the noise synaptic current and periodic stimulus, focusing on the dependence of properties of SR on coupling strength c. It is found that there exists a critical coupling strength c^* such that if c 〈 c^*, then the SR can appear on the SW neural network. Especially, dependence of the critical coupling strength c^* on the number of neurons N shows the monotonic even almost linear increase of c^* as N increases and c^* on the SW network is smaller than that on the random network. For the effect of the SW network on the phenomenon of SR, we show that decreasing the connection-rewiring probability p of the network topology leads to an enhancement of SR. This indicates that the SR on the SW network is more prominent than that on the random network (p = 1.0). In addition, it is noted that the effect becomes remarkable as coupling strength increases. Moreover, it is found that the SR weakens but resonance range becomes wider with the increase of c on the SW neural network.  相似文献

Many models of neuronal activity exhibit complex oscillations in response to an input from other neurons in a network or to an input from a stimulus. We consider the effect of a single short stimulus on a simple model designed to mimic some features of neuronal dynamics. We focus on the transient response induced by the stimulus, particularly on the spike-adding behaviour of the response. Our main goal is to explain how the transient response is affected by the presence of unstable equilibria. We also investigate the dependence of the number of spikes on the amplitude and duration of the stimulus. In our analysis, we use numerical continuation methods and exploit the presence of different time scales in the model.  相似文献

The synchronization and pattern dynamics of coupled logistic maps on a certain type of complex network, constructed by adding random shortcuts to a regular ring, is investigated. For parameters where an isolated map is fully chaotic, the defect turbulence, which is dominant in the regular network, can be tamed into ordered periodic patterns or synchronized chaotic states when random shortcuts are added, and the patterns formed on the complex network can be grouped into two or three branches depending on the coupling strength.  相似文献

We investigate the existence and the stability of waves and phase locked states in rings of coupled oscillators with delayed interactions. Using center manifold reduction and the normal form method, we reduce the equation governing the dynamics of the whole network to an amplitude-phase model (i.e. a set of coupled ordinary differential equations describing the evolution of both the amplitudes and the phases of the oscillators). Then we prove the existence of traveling waves, in-phase and anti-phase locked oscillations, in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional lattices. The influence of the interaction strength and the number of oscillators is investigated, and the possible coexistence of waves and phase locked oscillations is shown.  相似文献

We present a simple model for examining the wealth distribution with agents playing evolutionary games (the Prisoners’ Dilemma and the Snowdrift Game) on complex networks. Pareto’s power law distribution of wealth (from 1897) is reproduced on a scale-free network, and the Gibbs or log-normal distribution for a low income population is reproduced on a random graph. The Pareto exponents of a scale-free network are in agreement with empirical observations. The Gini coefficient of an ER random graph shows a sudden increment with game parameters. We suggest that the social network of a high income group is scale-free, whereas it is more like a random graph for a low income group.  相似文献

Topological Effects on the Performance of Transportation Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
We investigate the influence of the network topology on the performance (characterized by the total system cost and maximal tratffic volume) of transportation networks, where the weights are not static (constant), but dynamic (a function of the flow on the link). Four classes of networks are used in the simulation, including regular networks, random networks, small-world networks and scale-free networks. The initial simulation results show that topologies play important roles on the performance of transportation networks, and random networks have better performance than other networks. Also, we find that there are distinct difference of the link flow distribution for various networks in both the distribution function form and the span between the minimum and the maximum of the link flow, explaining the difference of the performance among distinct networks. These findings will be useful in network design problems of transportation systems.  相似文献

The mammalian cortices show an specific architecture close to the optimum, represented by the high clustering, short processing steps and short wiring length. What are the key factors that influence the layout of neural connectivity networks? Here a model to investigate the conditions leading to the small-world cortical networks with minimal global wiring is presented. The essential factors in this model are the introductions of the unequal number distribution of heterogeneous neurons and two connection mechanisms, the preferential attachment to neurons with large spatial coverage (PANLSC) and distance preference. Outcomes show that the specific architecture close to the optimum can only result from the PANLSC when the number distribution of neurons with diverse spatial coverage is highly unequal. This suggests the PANLSC may be an important connection mechanism in cortical systems.  相似文献

To reveal the dynamics of neuronal networks with pacemakers, the firing patterns and their transitions are investigated in a ring HR neuronal network with gap junctions under the control of a pacemaker. Compared with the situation without pacemaker, the neurons in the network can exhibit wrious firing patterns as the externed current is applied or the coupling strength of pacemaker varies. The results are beneficial for understanding the complex cooperative behaviour of large neural assemblies with pacemaker control.  相似文献

Fast response and temporal coherent oscillations in small-world networks   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
We have investigated the role that different connectivity regimes play in the dynamics of a network of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons by computer simulations. The different connectivity topologies exhibit the following features: random topologies give rise to fast system response yet are unable to produce coherent oscillations in the average activity of the network; on the other hand, regular topologies give rise to coherent oscillations, but in a temporal scale that is not in accordance with fast signal processing. Finally, small-world topologies, which fall between random and regular ones, take advantage of the best features of both, giving rise to fast system response with coherent oscillations.  相似文献

Pattern synchronization in a two-layer neuronal network is studied. For a single-layer network of Rulkov map neurons, there are three kinds of patterns induced by noise. Additive noise can induce ordered patterns at some intermediate noise intensities in a resonant way; however, for small and large noise intensities there exist excitable patterns and disordered patterns, respectively. For a neuronal network coupled by two single-layer networks with noise intensity differences between layers, we find that the two-layer network can achieve synchrony as the interlayer coupling strength increases. The synchronous states strongly depend on the interlayer coupling strength and the noise intensity difference between layers.  相似文献

We study the spatial dynamics of spiral waves in noisy Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal ensembles evoked by different information transmission delays and network topologies. In classical settings of coherence resonance the intensity of noise is fine-tuned so as to optimize the system's response. Here, we keep the noise intensity constant, and instead, vary the length of information transmission delay amongst coupled neurons. We show that there exists an intermediate transmission delay by which the spiral waves are optimally ordered, hence indicating the existence of delay-enhanced coherence of spatial dynamics in the examined system. Additionally, we examine the robustness of this phenomenon as the diffusive interaction topology changes towards the small-world type, and discover that shortcut links amongst distant neurons hinder the emergence of coherent spiral waves irrespective of transmission delay length. Presented results thus provide insights that could facilitate the understanding of information transmission delay on realistic neuronal networks.  相似文献

Accelerated Stochastic Simulation of Large Chemical Systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文

For efficient simulation of chemical systems with large number of reactions, we report a fast and exact algorithm for direct simulation of chemical discrete Markov processes. The approach adopts the scheme of organizing the reactions into hierarchical groups. By generating a random number, the selection of the next reaction that actually occurs is accomplished by a few successive selections in the hierarchical groups. The algorithm which is suited for simulating systems with large number of reactions is much faster than the direct method or the optimized direct method. For a demonstration of its efficiency, the accelerated algorithm is applied to simulate the reaction-diffusion Brusselator model on a discretized space.  相似文献

We investigate the structure of a perturbed stock market in terms of correlation matrices. For the purpose of perturbing a stock market, two distinct methods are used, namely local and global perturbation. The former involves replacing a correlation coefficient of the cross-correlation matrix with one calculated from two Gaussian-distributed time series while the latter reconstructs the cross-correlation matrix just after replacing the original return series with Gaussian-distributed time series. Concerning the local case, it is a technical study only and there is no attempt to model reality. The term ‘global’ means the overall effect of the replacement on other untouched returns. Through statistical analyses such as random matrix theory (RMT), network theory, and the correlation coefficient distributions, we show that the global structure of a stock market is vulnerable to perturbation. However, apart from in the analysis of inverse participation ratios (IPRs), the vulnerability becomes dull under a small-scale perturbation. This means that these analysis tools are inappropriate for monitoring the whole stock market due to the low sensitivity of a stock market to a small-scale perturbation. In contrast, when going down to the structure of business sectors, we confirm that correlation-based business sectors are regrouped in terms of IPRs. This result gives a clue about monitoring the effect of hidden intentions, which are revealed via portfolios taken mostly by large investors.  相似文献

We study the dynamic behaviour of two intracellufar calcium oscillators that are coupled through gap junctions both to Ca^2+ and inositol(1,4,5)-trisphosphate (IP3). It is found that synchronized anti-phase and in-phase oscillations of cytoplasmic cadcium coexist in parameters space. Especially, synchronized anti-phase oscillations only occur near the onset of a Hopf bifurcation point when the velocity of IP3 synthesis is increased. In addition, two kinds of coupling effects, i.e., the diffusions of Ca^2+ and IP3 among cells on synchronous behaviour, are considered. We fnd that small coupling of Ca^2+ and large coupling of IP3 facilitate the emergence of synchronized anti-phase oscillations. However, the result is contrary for the synchronized in-phase case. Our findings may provide a qualitative understanding about the mechanism of synchronous behaviour of intercellular calcium signalling.  相似文献

A mathematical model proposed by Grubelnk et al. [Biophys. Chem. 94 (2001) 59] is employed to study the physiological role of mitochondria and the cytosolic proteins in generating complex Ca^2+ oscillations, lntracellulax bursting calcium oscillations of point-point, point-cycle and two-folded limit cycle types are observed and explanations are given based on the fast/slow dynamical analysis, especially for point-cycle and two-folded limit cycle types, which have not been reported before. Furthermore, synchronization of coupled bursters of Ca^2+ oscillations via gap junctions and the effect of bursting types on synchronization of coupled cells are studied. It is argued that bursting oscillations of point-point type may be superior to achieve synchronization than that of point cycle type.  相似文献
