A space X is said to be κ-resolvable (resp., almost κ-resolvable) if it contains κ dense sets that are pairwise disjoint (resp., almost disjoint over the ideal of nowhere dense subsets). X is maximally resolvable if and only if it is Δ(X)-resolvable, where Δ(X) = min{|G| : G ≠ open}. We show that every crowded monotonically normal (in short: MN) space is ω-resolvable and almost μ-resolvable, where μ = min{2 ω , ω 2}. On the other hand, if κ is a measurable cardinal then there is a MN space X with Δ(X) = κ such that no subspace of X is ω 1-resolvable. Any MN space of cardinality < ℵ ω is maximally resolvable. But from a supercompact cardinal we obtain the consistency of the existence of a MN space X with |X| = Δ(X) = ℵ ω such that no subspace of X is ω 2-resolvable. We show that a T1 space X is resolvable if the set of limit points λ (X) of various simultaneously separated subsets of X is dense in X. Moreover, if λ (X) is open also, then X is ω-resolvable. It follows that a self-dense, Hausdroff space satisfying a generalized k-space (sequential space) condition is resolvable (respectively, ω-resolvable).  相似文献

The recent literature offers examples, specific and hand-crafted, of Tychonoff spaces (in ZFC) which respond negatively to these questions, due respectively to Ceder and Pearson (1967) [3] and to Comfort and García-Ferreira (2001) [5]: (1) Is every ω-resolvable space maximally resolvable? (2) Is every maximally resolvable space extraresolvable? Now using the method of KID expansion, the authors show that every suitably restricted Tychonoff topological space (X,T) admits a larger Tychonoff topology (that is, an “expansion”) witnessing such failure. Specifically the authors show in ZFC that if (X,T) is a maximally resolvable Tychonoff space with S(X,T)?Δ(X,T)=κ, then (X,T) has Tychonoff expansions U=Ui (1?i?5), with Δ(X,Ui)=Δ(X,T) and S(X,Ui)?Δ(X,Ui), such that (X,Ui) is: (i=1) ω-resolvable but not maximally resolvable; (i=2) [if κ is regular, with S(X,T)?κ?κ] τ-resolvable for all τ<κ, but not κ-resolvable; (i=3) maximally resolvable, but not extraresolvable; (i=4) extraresolvable, but not maximally resolvable; (i=5) maximally resolvable and extraresolvable, but not strongly extraresolvable.  相似文献

The authors give a consistent affirmative response to a question of Juhász, Soukup and Szentmiklóssy: If GCH fails, there are (many) extraresolvable, not maximally resolvable Tychonoff spaces. They show also in ZFC that for ω<λ?κ, no maximal λ-independent family of λ-partitions of κ is ω-resolvable. In topological language, that theorem translates to this: A dense, ω-resolvable subset of a space of the form (DI(λ)) is λ-resolvable.  相似文献

A topological space is called resolvable if it is a union of two disjoint dense subsets, and is n-resolvable if it is a union of n mutually disjoint dense subsets. Clearly a resolvable space has no isolated points. If f is a selfmap on X, the sets A?X with f (A)?A are the closed sets of an Alexandroff topology called the primal topology 𝒫(f ) associated with f. We investigate resolvability for primal spaces (X, 𝒫(f)). Our main result is that an Alexandroff space is resolvable if and only if it has no isolated points. Moreover, n-resolvability and other related concepts are investigated for primal spaces.  相似文献

A t-design Sλ(t, k, v) is an arrangement of v elements in blocks of k elements each such that every t element subset is contained in exactly λ blocks. A t-design Sλ(t, k, v) is called t′-resolvable if the blocks can be partitioned into families such that each family is the block system of a Sλ(t′, k, v). It is shown that the S1(3, 4, 22m) design of planes on an even dimensional affine space over the field of two elements is 2-resolvable. Each S1(2, 4, 22m) given by the resolution is itself 1-resolvable. As a corollary it is shown that every odd dimensional projective space over the field of two elements admits a 1-packing of 1-spreads, i.e. a partition of its lines into families of mutually disjoint lines whose union covers the space. This 1-packing may be generated from any one of its spreads by repeated application of a fixed collineation.  相似文献

Let H0(X) (H(X)) denote the set of all (nonempty) closed subsets of X endowed with the Vietoris topology. A basic problem concerning H(X) is to characterize those X for which H(X) is countably compact. We conjecture that u-compactness of X for some uω (or equivalently: all powers of X are countably compact) may be such a characterization. We give some results that point into this direction. We define the property R(κ): for every family of closed subsets of X separated by pairwise disjoint open sets and any family of natural numbers, the product is countably compact, and prove that if H(X) is countably compact for a T2-space X then X satisfies R(κ) for all κ. A space has R(1) iff all its finite powers are countably compact, so this generalizes a theorem of J. Ginsburg: if X is T2 and H(X) is countably compact, then so is Xn for all n<ω. We also prove that, for κ<t, if the T3 space X satisfies a weak form of R(κ), the orbit of every point in X is dense, and X contains κ pairwise disjoint open sets, then Xκ is countably compact. This generalizes the following theorem of J. Cao, T. Nogura, and A. Tomita: if X is T3, homogeneous, and H(X) is countably compact, then so is Xω.Then we study the Frolík sum (also called “one-point countable-compactification”) of a family . We use the Frolík sum to produce countably compact spaces with additional properties (like first countability) whose hyperspaces are not countably compact. We also prove that any product α<κH0(Xα) embeds into .  相似文献

Let (X,T) be a topological dynamical system and F be a Furstenberg family (a collection of subsets of Z+ with hereditary upward property). A point xX is called an F-transitive one if {nZ+:TnxU}∈F for every non-empty open subset U of X; the system (X,T) is called F-point transitive if there exists some F-transitive point. In this paper, we aim to classify transitive systems by F-point transitivity. Among other things, it is shown that (X,T) is a weakly mixing E-system (resp. weakly mixing M-system, HY-system) if and only if it is {D-sets}-point transitive (resp. {central sets}-point transitive, {weakly thick sets}-point transitive). It is shown that every weakly mixing system is Fip-point transitive, while we construct an Fip-point transitive system which is not weakly mixing. As applications, we show that every transitive system with dense small periodic sets is disjoint from every totally minimal system and a system is Δ?(Fwt)-transitive if and only if it is weakly disjoint from every P-system.  相似文献

We continue the work started in [6] and show that all monotonically normal (in short: MN) spaces are maximally resolvable if and only if all uniform ultrafilters are maximally decomposable. As a consequence we get that the existence of an MN space which is not maximally resolvable is equi-consistent with the existence of a measurable cardinal. We also show that it is consistent (modulo the consistency of a measurable cardinal) that there is an MN space X with |X| = Δ(X) = ? ω which is not ω 1-resolvable. It follows from the results of [6] that this is best possible.  相似文献

Let Δ ? X1 be the diagonal. In the first part of this paper, we show that a compact space X is Corson compact (resp., Eberlein compact; compact metric) if and only if X2?Δ is metalindelöf (resp., σ-metacompact; paracompact). In the second part of the paper, we investigate the notion of a W-set in a space X, which is defined in terms of an infinite game. We show that a compact space X is Corson compact if and only if X has a W-set diagonal, and that a compact scattered space X is strong Eberlein compact if and only if each point of X is a W-set in X.  相似文献

By classical results of Hurewicz, Kechris and Saint-Raymond, an analytic subset of a Polish space X is covered by a Kσ subset of X if and only if it does not contain a closed-in-X subset homeomorphic to the Baire space ww. We consider the analogous statement (which we call the Hurewicz dichotomy) for ∑11j subsets of the generalized Baire space κκ for a given uncountable cardinal κ with κ = κ<κ. We show that the statement that this dichotomy holds at all uncountable regular cardinals is consistent with the axioms of ZFC together with GCH and large cardinal axioms. In contrast, we show that the dichotomy fails at all uncountable regular cardinals after we add a Cohen real to a model of GCH. We also discuss connections with some regularity properties, like the κ-perfect set property, the κ-Miller measurability, and the κ-Sacks measurability.  相似文献

Building on work of Terada, we prove that h-homogeneity is productive in the class of zero-dimensional spaces. Then, by generalizing a result of Motorov, we show that for every non-empty zero-dimensional space X there exists a non-empty zero-dimensional space Y such that X×Y is h-homogeneous. Also, we simultaneously generalize results of Motorov and Terada by showing that if X is a space such that the isolated points are dense then Xκ is h-homogeneous for every infinite cardinal κ. Finally, we show that a question of Terada (whether Xω is h-homogeneous for every zero-dimensional first-countable X) is equivalent to a question of Motorov (whether such an infinite power is always divisible by 2) and give some partial answers.  相似文献

In this paper, we show the following statements:
(1)
For any cardinal κ, there exists a pseudocompact centered-Lindelöf Tychonoff space X such that we(X)?κ.
(2)
Assuming 02=12, there exists a centered-Lindelöf normal space X such that we(X)?ω1.

We build on Gruenhage, Natkaniec, and Piotrowski?s study of thin, very thin, and slim dense sets in products, and the related notions of (NC) and (GC) which they introduced. We find examples of separable spaces X such that X2 has a thin or slim dense set but no countable one. We characterize ordered spaces that satisfy (GC) and (NC), and we give an example of a separable space which satisfies (GC) but not witnessed by a collection of finite sets. We show that the question of when the topological sum of two countable strongly irresolvable spaces satisfies (NC) is related to the Rudin-Keisler order on βω. We also introduce and study the concepts of <κ-thin and superslim dense sets.  相似文献

Most of results of Bestvina and Mogilski [Characterizing certain incomplete infinite-di-mensional absolute retracts. Michigan Math. J., 33, 291-313 (1986)] on strong Z-sets in ANR's and absorbing sets is generalized to nonseparable case. It is shown that if an ANR X is locally homotopy dense embeddable in infinite-dimensional Hilbert manifolds and w(U ) = w(X ) (where "w"is the topological weight) for each open nonempty subset U of X , then X itself is homotopy dense embeddable in a Hilbert manifold. It is also demonstrated that whenever X is an AR, its weak product W (X, ) = {(x n ) ∞ n=1 ∈ X ω : x n = for almost all n} is homeomorphic to a pre-Hilbert space E with E ~ = ΣE. An intrinsic characterization of manifolds modelled on such pre-Hilbert spaces is given.  相似文献

This text contains an example which presents a way to modify any Dowker space to get a normal space X such that X×[0,1] is not κ-normal, and a theorem implying the existence of a non-Tychonoff space which is internally compact in a larger regular space. It gives answers to several questions by Arhangel'skii [A.V. Arhangel'skii, Relative normality and dense subspaces, Topology Appl. 123 (2002) 27-36].  相似文献

For a normal space X, α (i.e. the nonempty player) having a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) in the strong Choquet game Ch(X) played on X is equivalent to α having a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) in the strong Choquet game played on the hyperspace CL(X) of nonempty closed subsets endowed with the Vietoris topology τ V . It is shown that for a non-normal X where α has a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) in Ch(X), α may or may not have a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) in the strong Choquet game played on the Vietoris hyperspace. If X is quasi-regular, then having a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) for α in the Banach-Mazur game BM(X) played on X is sufficient for α having a winning strategy (resp. winning tactic) in BM(CL(X), τ V ), but not necessary, not even for a separable metric X. In the absence of quasi-regularity of a space X where α has a winning strategy in BM(X), α may or may not have a winning strategy in the Banach-Mazur game played on the Vietoris hyperspace.  相似文献

We show that a completely regular space Y is a p-space (a ?ech-complete space, a locally compact space) if and only if given a dense subspace A of any topological space X and a continuous f: AY there are a p-embedded subset (resp. a G δ-subset, an open subset) M of X containing A and a quasicontinuous subcontinuous extension f*: M → Y of f continuous at every point of A. A result concerning a continuous extension to a residual set is also given.  相似文献

A space is said to be resolvable if it has two disjoint dense subsets. It is shown thatX is a Baire space with no resolvable open subsets iff every real function defined onX has a dense set of points of continuity. Thus almost resolvable spaces, as defined by Bolstein, are shown to be characterized as the union of a first category set and a closed resolvable set.  相似文献

We prove, among other things, that a Lipschitz (or uniformly continuous) mapping f:XY can be approximated (even in a fine topology) by smooth Lipschitz (resp. uniformly continuous) mapping, if X is a separable Banach space admitting a smooth Lipschitz bump and either X or Y is a separable C(K) space (resp. super-reflexive space). Further, we show how smooth approximation of Lipschitz mappings is closely related to a smooth approximation of C1-smooth mappings together with their first derivatives. As a corollary we obtain new results on smooth approximation of C1-smooth mappings together with their first derivatives.  相似文献
