In 1957 Robert Ellis proved that a group with a locally compact Hausdorff topology T making all translations continuous also has jointly continuous multiplication and continuous inversion, and is thus a topological group. The theorem does not apply to locally compact asymmetric spaces such as the reals with addition and the topology of upper open rays. We first show a bitopological Ellis theorem, and then introduce a generalization of locally compact Hausdorff, called locally skew compact, and a topological dual, Tk, to obtain the following asymmetric Ellis theorem which applies to the example above:Whenever (X,⋅,T) is a group with a locally skew compact topology making all translations continuous, then multiplication is jointly continuous in both (X,⋅,T) and (X,⋅,Tk), and inversion is a homeomorphism between (X,T) and (X,Tk).This generalizes the classical Ellis theorem, because T=Tk when (X,T) is locally compact Hausdorff.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper uniformly locally uniformly connected merotopic spaces are studied. It turns out that their structural behaviour is essentially similar to that one of locally connected topological spaces. The introduced concept is also investigated for spaces of functions between filter-merotopic spaces (e.g. topological spaces, proximity spaces, convergence spaces) and the relationship to other concepts of local connectedness is clarified. In particular, the category of uniformly locally uniformly connected filter-merotopic spaces is Cartesian closed.  相似文献

If a discrete subset S of a topological group G with the identity 1 generates a dense subgroup of G and S∪{1} is closed in G, then S is called a suitable set for G. We apply Michael's selection theorem to offer a direct, self-contained, purely topological proof of the result of Hofmann and Morris [K.-H. Hofmann, S.A. Morris, Weight and c, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 68 (1-2) (1990) 181-194] on the existence of suitable sets in locally compact groups. Our approach uses only elementary facts from (topological) group theory.  相似文献

Let A be a lattice-ordered algebra endowed with a topology compatible with the structure of algebra. We provide internal conditions for A to be isomorphic as lattice-ordered algebras and homeomorphic to Ck(X), the lattice-ordered algebra C(X) of real continuous functions on a completely regular and Hausdorff topological space X, endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. As a previous step, we determine this topology among the locally m-convex topologies on C(X) with the property that each order closed interval is bounded.  相似文献

We explore the relation between two general kinds of separation properties. The first kind, which includes the classical separation properties of regularity and normality, has to do with expanding two disjoint closed sets, or dense subsets of each, to disjoint open sets. The second kind has to do with expanding discrete collections of points, or full-cardinality subcollections thereof, to disjoint or discrete collections of open sets. The properties of being collectionwise Hausdorff (cwH), of being strongly cwH, and of being wD(1), fall into the second category. We study the effect on other separation properties if these properties are assumed to hold hereditarily. In the case of scattered spaces, we show that (a) the hereditarily cwH ones are α-normal and (b) a regular one is hereditarily strongly cwH iff it is hereditarily cwH and hereditarily β-normal. Examples are given in ZFC of (1) hereditarily strongly cwH spaces which fail to be regular, including one that also fails to be α-normal; (2) hereditarily strongly cwH regular spaces which fail to be normal and even, in one case, to be β-normal; (3) hereditarily cwH spaces which fail to be α-normal. We characterize those regular spaces X such that X×(ω+1) is hereditarily strongly cwH and, as a corollary, obtain a consistent example of a locally compact, first countable, hereditarily strongly cwH, non-normal space. The ZFC-independence of several statements involving the hereditarily wD(1) property is established. In particular, several purely topological statements involving this property are shown to be equivalent to b=ω1.  相似文献

We study CLP-compact spaces (every cover consisting of clopen sets has a finite subcover) and CLP-compact topological groups. In particular, we extend a theorem on CLP-compactness of products from [J. Steprāns, A. Šostak, Restricted compactness properties and their preservation under products, Topology Appl. 101 (3) (2000) 213-229] and we offer various criteria for CLP-compactness for spaces and topological groups, that work particularly well for precompact groups. This allows us to show that arbitrary products of CLP-compact pseudocompact groups are CLP-compact. For every natural n we construct:
(i)
a totally disconnected, n-dimensional, pseudocompact CLP-compact group; and
(ii)
a hereditarily disconnected, n-dimensional, totally minimal, CLP-compact group that can be chosen to be either separable metrizable or pseudocompact (a Hausdorff group G is totally minimal when all continuous surjective homomorphisms GH, with a Hausdorff group H, are open).

A metric space X is straight if for each finite cover of X by closed sets, and for each real valued function f on X, if f is uniformly continuous on each set of the cover, then f is uniformly continuous on the whole of X. A locally connected space is straight iff it is uniformly locally connected (ULC). It is easily seen that ULC spaces are stable under finite products. On the other hand the product of two straight spaces is not necessarily straight. We prove that the product X×Y of two metric spaces is straight if and only if both X and Y are straight and one of the following conditions holds:
(a)
both X and Y are precompact;
(b)
both X and Y are locally connected;
(c)
one of the spaces is both precompact and locally connected.
In particular, when X satisfies (c), the product X×Z is straight for every straight space Z.Finally, we characterize when infinite products of metric spaces are ULC and we completely solve the problem of straightness of infinite products of ULC spaces.  相似文献

A refinement of an algorithm developed by Culberson and Rawlins yields the numbers of all partially ordered sets (posets) with n points and k antichains for n11 and all relevant integers k. Using these numbers in connection with certain formulae derived earlier by the first author, one can now compute the numbers of all quasiordered sets, posets, connected posets etc. with n points for n14. Using the well-known one-to-one correspondence between finite quasiordered sets and finite topological spaces, one obtains the numbers of finite topological spaces with n points and k open sets for n11 and all k, and then the numbers of all topologies on n14 points satisfying various degrees of separation and connectedness properties, respectively. The number of (connected) topologies on 14 points exceeds 1023.  相似文献

A metric space X is straight if for each finite cover of X by closed sets, and for each real valued function f on X, if f is uniformly continuous on each set of the cover, then f is uniformly continuous on the whole of X. The straight spaces have been studied in [A. Berarducci, D. Dikranjan, J. Pelant, An additivity theorem for uniformly continuous functions, Topology and its Applications 146-147 (2005) 339-352], which contains characterization of the straight spaces within the class of the locally connected spaces (they are the uniformly locally connected ones) and the class of the totally disconnected spaces (they coincide with the totally disconnected Atsuji spaces). We show that the completion of a straight space is straight and we characterize the dense straight subspaces of a straight space. In order to clarify further the relation between straightness and the level of local connectedness of the space we introduce two more intermediate properties between straightness and uniform local connectedness and we give various examples to distinguish them. One of these properties coincides with straightness for complete spaces and provides in this way a useful characterization of complete straight spaces in terms of the behaviour of the quasi-components of the space.  相似文献

Generalizing duality theorem of V.V. Fedorchuk [V.V. Fedorchuk, Boolean δ-algebras and quasi-open mappings, Sibirsk. Mat. Zh. 14 (5) (1973) 1088-1099; English translation: Siberian Math. J. 14 (1973) 759-767 (1974)], we prove Stone-type duality theorems for the following four categories: the objects of all of them are the locally compact Hausdorff spaces, and their morphisms are, respectively, the continuous skeletal maps, the quasi-open perfect maps, the open maps, the open perfect maps. In particular, a Stone-type duality theorem for the category of compact Hausdorff spaces and open maps is obtained. Some equivalence theorems for these four categories are stated as well; two of them generalize the Fedorchuk equivalence theorem [V.V. Fedorchuk, Boolean δ-algebras and quasi-open mappings, Sibirsk. Mat. Zh. 14 (5) (1973) 1088-1099; English translation: Siberian Math. J. 14 (1973) 759-767 (1974)].  相似文献

Abstract

Local compactness is studied in the highly convenient setting of semi-uniform convergence spaces which form a common generalization of (symmetric) limit spaces (and thus of symmetric topological spaces) as well as of uniform limit spaces (and thus of uniform spaces). It turns out that it leads to a cartesian closed topological category and, in contrast to the situation for topological spaces, the local compact spaces are exactly the compactly generated spaces. Furthermore, a one-point Hausdorff compactification for noncompact locally compact Hausdorff convergence spaces is considered.1  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the following question: when does a topological group G have a Hausdorff compactification bG with a remainder belonging to a given class of spaces? We extend the results of A.V. Arhangel'skii by showing that if a remainder of a non-locally compact topological group G has a countable open point-network or a locally Gδ-diagonal, then G and the compactification bG of G are separable and metrizable.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this paper is to study join-continuous frames. We present two representation theorems for them: one in terms of -subframes of complete Boolean algebras and the other in terms of certain Priestley spaces. This second representation is used to prove that the topological spaces whose frame of open sets is join-continuous are characterized by a condition which says that certain intersections of open sets are open. Finally, we show that Priestley's duality can be viewed as a partialization of the dual adjunction between the categories of, respectively, bitopological spaces and biframes, stated by B. Banaschewski, G. C. L. Brümmer and K. A. Hardie in [5].This work was partially supported by Centro de Matemáíica da Universidade de Coimbra.  相似文献

We apply and develop an idea of E. van Douwen used to define D-spaces. Given a topological property P, the class P dual to P (with respect to neighbourhood assignments) consists of spaces X such that for any neighbourhood assignment there is YX with YP and . We prove that the classes of compact, countably compact and pseudocompact are self-dual with respect to neighbourhood assignments. It is also established that all spaces dual to hereditarily Lindelöf spaces are Lindelöf. In the second part of this paper we study some non-trivial classes of pseudocompact spaces defined in an analogous way using stars of open covers instead of neighbourhood assignments.  相似文献

We continue the study of Selectively Separable (SS) and, a game-theoretic strengthening, strategically selectively separable spaces (SS+) (see Barman, Dow (2011) [1]). The motivation for studying SS+ is that it is a property possessed by all separable subsets of Cp(X) for each σ-compact space X. We prove that the winning strategy for countable SS+ spaces can be chosen to be Markov. We introduce the notion of being compactlike for a collection of open sets in a topological space and with the help of this notion we prove that there are two countable SS+ spaces such that the union fails to be SS+, which contrasts the known result about SS spaces. We also prove that the product of two countable SS+ spaces is again countable SS+. One of the main results in this paper is that the proper forcing axiom, PFA, implies that the product of two countable Fréchet spaces is SS, a statement that was shown in Barman, Dow (2011) [1] to consistently fail. An auxiliary result is that it is consistent with the negation of CH that all separable Fréchet spaces have π-weight at most ω1.  相似文献

In this paper we give a topological characterization of ω-limit sets in hereditarily locally connected continua. Moreover, we characterize also orbit-enclosing ω-limit sets in these spaces.  相似文献

A notion of real compactness for completely biregular bi-T2 ditopological texture spaces is defined and studied under the name real dicompactness. In particular it is shown that real dicompact spaces are nearly plain ∗-spaces, and an important characterization is presented. Finally the connection of this work with topological and bitopological real compactness is discussed in a categorical setting.  相似文献

In this work we expand upon the theory of open ultrafilters in the setting of regular spaces. In [E. van Douwen, Remote points, Dissertationes Math. (Rozprawy Mat.) 188 (1981) 1-45], van Douwen showed that if X is a non-feebly compact Tychonoff space with a countable π-base, then βX has a remote point. We develop a related result for the class of regular spaces which shows that in a non-feebly compact regular space X with a countable π-base, there exists a free open ultrafilter on X that is also a regular filter.Of central importance is a result of Mooney [D.D. Mooney, H-bounded sets, Topology Proc. 18 (1993) 195-207] that characterizes open ultrafilters as open filters that are saturated and disjoint-prime. Smirnov [J.M. Smirnov, Some relations on the theory of dimensions, Mat. Sb. 29 (1951) 157-172] showed that maximal completely regular filters are disjoint prime, from which it was concluded that βX is a perfect extension for a Tychonoff space X. We extend this result, and other results of Skljarenko [E.G. Skljarenko, Some questions in the theory of bicompactifications, Amer. Math. Soc. Transl. Ser. 2 58 (1966) 216-266], by showing that a maximal regular filter on any Hausdorff space is disjoint prime.Open ultrafilters are integral to the study of maximal points and lower topologies in the partial order of Hausdorff topologies on a fixed set. We show that a maximal point in a Hausdorff space cannot have a neighborhood base of feebly compact neighborhoods. One corollary is that no locally countably compact Hausdorff topology is a lower topology, which was shown previously under the additional assumption of countable tightness by Alas and Wilson [O. Alas, R. Wilson, Which topologies can have immediate successors in the lattice of T1-topologies? Appl. Gen. Topol. 5 (2004) 231-242]. Another is that a maximal point in a feebly compact space is not a regular point. This generalizes results of both Carlson [N. Carlson, Lower upper topologies in the Hausdorff partial order on a fixed set, Topology Appl. 154 (2007) 619-624] and Costantini [C. Costantini, On some questions about posets of topologies on a fixed set, Topology Proc. 32 (2008) 187-225].  相似文献

We furnish characterizations of topologies that coincide with the lower topology or with the order topology of some total preorder defined on a set. Leaning on these characterizations we introduce some applications to the study of continuous and semicontinuous order-representability properties of topological spaces.  相似文献

Similarly as the sobriety is essential for representing continuous maps as frame homo-morphisms, also other separation axioms play a basic role in expressing topological phenomena in frame language. In particular,T D is equivalent with the correctness of viewing subspaces as sublocates, or with representability of open or closed maps as open or closed homomorphisms. A weaker separation axiom is equivalent with an algebraic recognizability whether the intersection of a system of open sets remains open or not. The role of sobriety is also being analyzed in some detail.In honour of Nico Pumplün on the occasion of his 60th birthdayThe support of the Italian C.N.R. is gratefully acknowledged.Partial financial support of the Italian M.U.R.S.T. is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献
