Let be a rank two Chevalley group and be the corresponding Moufang polygon. J. Tits proved that is the universal completion of the amalgam formed by three subgroups of : the stabilizer of a point of , the stabilizer of a line incident with , and the stabilizer of an apartment passing through and . We prove a slightly stronger result, in which the exact structure of is not required. Our result can be used in conjunction with the ``weak -pair" theorem of Delgado and Stellmacher in order to identify subgroups of finite groups generated by minimal parabolics.

For a prime divisor of the order of a finite group , we present the set of -subgroups generating . In particular, we present the set of primary subgroups of generating the last member of the lower central series of . The proof is based on the Frobenius Normal -Complement Theorem and basic properties of minimal nonnilpotent groups. Let be a group and a group-theoretic property inherited by subgroups and epimorphic images such that all minimal non--subgroups (-subgroups) of are not nilpotent. Then (see the lemma), if is generated by all -subgroups of it follows that is a -group.

Given a connected linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, we construct a pure Picard-Vessiot extension for , namely, a Picard-Vessiot extension , with differential Galois group , such that and are purely differentially transcendental over . The differential field is the quotient field of a -stable proper differential subring with the property that if is any differential field with field of constants and is a Picard-Vessiot extension with differential Galois group a connected subgroup of , then there is a differential homomorphism such that is generated over as a differential field by .

We observe a simple formula to compute the number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable finite group in terms of only the action of a fixed Hall -subgroup of on a set of normal -sections of . As a consequence, we obtain that divides whenever is a subgroup of a finite -separable group . This generalizes a recent result of Navarro. In addition, our method gives an alternative proof of Navarro's result.

The behavior of the images of a fixed element of order in irreducible representations of a classical algebraic group in characteristic with highest weights large enough with respect to and this element is investigated. More precisely, let be a classical algebraic group of rank over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2$">. Assume that an element of order is conjugate to that of an algebraic group of the same type and rank naturally embedded into . Next, an integer function on the set of dominant weights of and a constant that depend only upon , and a polynomial of degree one are defined. It is proved that the image of in the irreducible representation of with highest weight contains more than Jordan blocks of size if and are not too small and .

In 1992, Blanc and Brylinski showed the following property for a -adic group , called the ``abstract Selberg principle': the orbital integrals on conjugacy classes of non-compact elements of the Hattori rank of a finitely generated projective smooth representation of vanish. The proof is by explicit computations of ``low' level ( and cyclic and Hochschild cohomologies. Here we intend to show that this property is actually a direct consequence of two facts: Clozel's integration formula (which leads us to assume the defining characteristic to be zero) and the triviality of the action of unramified characters on the of (which is also proven here, using a standard -theoretic argument due to Grothendieck).

We prove the existence of invariant projections from the Banach space of -pseudomeasures onto with for closed neutral subgroup of a locally compact group . The following has been proven by Brauer and Nesbitt. Let be a finite group, and let be a prime. Assume is an irreducible complex character of such that the order of a -Sylow subgroup of divides the degree of . Then vanishes on all those elements of whose order is divisible by . The two only known proofs of this theorem use profound methods of representation theory, namely the theory of modular representations or Brauer's characterization of generalized characters. A known, and easy to establish, fact in Best Approximation Theory is that, if the unit ball of a subspace of a Banach space is proximinal in , then itself is proximinal in . We are concerned in this article with the reverse implication, as the knowledge of whether the unit ball is proximinal or not is useful in obtaining information about other problems. Extending results of a number of authors, we prove that if is the unipotent radical of an -split solvable epimorphic subgroup of a real algebraic group which is generated by unipotents, then the action of on is uniquely ergodic for every cocompact lattice in . This gives examples of uniquely ergodic and minimal two-dimensional flows on homogeneous spaces of arbitrarily high dimension. Our main tools are the Ratner classification of ergodic invariant measures for the action of a unipotent subgroup on a homogeneous space, and a simple lemma (the `Cone Lemma') about representations of epimorphic subgroups.

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds is presented. As an application we prove a theorem about simultaneous coexistence of countably many semi-free actions of compact metric zero-dimensional groups with the prescribed fixed-point sets: Let be a compact metric zero-dimensional group, represented as the direct product of subgroups , a -manifold and (resp., ) its pseudo-interior (resp., pseudo-boundary). Then, given closed subsets of , there exists a -action on such that (1) and are invariant subsets of ; and (2) each is the fixed point set of any element .
