Photonic crystal all-optical switching is realized in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]. Organic polymer films are fabricated by a slow evaporation method. Under resonant excitation, the organic matrix provides very large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. An operating pump energy as low as 514 pJ/cm2 and a high switching efficiency of 70% are achieved for the photonic crystal optical switching. A switching time of 45.6 ps is maintained due to fast Forster transfer of excitons. 相似文献

A comprehensive review of the work done by our group, during the last few years, on diode-pumped cw operating bulk Er : Yb phosphate glass is presented. The high performance of this laser in terms of output power, laser slope efficiency, single longitudinal and transverse mode operation, laser tunability and frequency stability, amplitude noise, and active mode-locking operation, are considered. The combination of this high performance and potential low cost makes these laser devices attractive for a variety of applications including spectroscopy, metrology, optical radars, optical communications, and all optical switching.Prof. F. Flying-spot displays require light sources in the red, green and blue with a high optical output power and nearly diffraction limited beams. In this paper we present experimental results of red-emitting, AlGaInP based, tapered diode lasers and their integration into diode laser modules. The laser modules emit a collimated, almost diffraction limited beam with an optical output power as high as 1W at a wavelength close to 635 nm. The tapered laser chips were designed with emphasis on achieving a good beam quality in vertical and lateral directions of a collimated beam. To test the suitability for flying-spot display applications, we performed fiber coupling experiments with a low mode number optical fiber with an etendue as low as 6 × 10?6 mm2 sr. A maximum transmission of 70% of the launched power behind the uncoated fiber as well as a usable power in excess of 580mW were measured. 相似文献

The current saturated operation of X-ray lasers at wavelengths > 15 nm requires at least kilojoule drive energy, which is only available at the largest laser installations in the world. Using a specially designed drive pulse configuration, saturated operation of a Ni-like Sn X-ray laser at 12 nm has been achieved with only 75 J drive energy. An efficiency as high as 9 × 106 in converting laser energy from the 1 eV optical spectral range to the 100 eV soft X-ray range has been reached. This paves the way for applications of saturated X-ray lasers at 12 nm at many other smaller laboratories. 相似文献

A distributed feedback (DFB) laser module has been developed for 2.5 Gbs-1 optical transmission systems. The DFB laser has a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) active layer and a planar buried heterostructure (PBH) for a low threshold current and stable singlemode operation with low chirping. A PBH DFB laser module with a single-mode fibre pigtail and an optical isolator was designed and fabricated by employing a single lens and a laser welding method. The fabricated MQW PBH DFB laser module is shown to be a suitable light source for 2.5 Gb s-1 optical transmission systems with a minimum received power of-33 dBm after 47 km conventional optical fibre transmission. 相似文献

The peak-power-density stability and beam-wander precision of a probe laser are important factors affecting the inspection
results in precise thin-film optical measurements. These factors are also key to evaluating a probe laser for in-line long-time
operation of precise thin-film optical measurements. The peak-power density and beam wander of liner helium–neon (He–Ne) lasers,
random He–Ne lasers, and diode lasers as functions of time are investigated experimentally using a beam profiler. It is found
that the linear polarized He–Ne laser is considered to be a promising candidate for a probe laser employed in precise thin-film
optical measurements due to better peak-power-density stability and beam-wander precision. Both the peak-power-density stability
and beam-wander precision of He–Ne lasers are usually better than that of diode lasers, but an adequate warm-up of He–Ne laser
for 30 min is required before thin-film optical measurements are made. After 12 h operation, the linear polarized He–Ne laser
is suitable for precise thin-film optical measurements because both the peak-power-density stability and the beam-wander precision
reach the minimum level. A cost-effective system composed of two linear polarized He–Ne lasers for long-term operation is
proposed. This system can operate for around 0.5–1.2 years in precise thin-film optical measurements under the normal operating
life of a He–Ne laser by switching the probe laser every 18 h. 相似文献

Dye-doped SiO2-xerogels are prepared for application as laser active medium. An optical surface and a sealing of the samples are achieved by covering them with silicon oil and an optical glass window. All optical properties were compatible with the assumption that the active chromophores are dissolved in the liquid which fills the pores of the xerogel. A replacement of the dye molecules destroyed by the pumping radiation via diffusion was observed. For stilbene 3 a diffusion coefficient ofD = 0.35 × 10–9 m2/s was determined. Actively mode-locked electron-beam-sustained-discharge CO laser producing a train of ∼5-15 ns (FWHM) spikes following with repetition rate 10 MHz for both single-line and multiline mode of operation in the mid-IR range of ∼5 μm was experimentally studied. Total laser pulse duration was ∼0.5 ms for both mode-locked and free-running laser. Specific output energy in multiline CO laser mode of operation was up to 20 Jl−1 Amagat−1 and the laser efficiency up to 3.5%. The active mode-locking was achieved for single-line CO laser mode of operation in spectral range 5.2-5.3 μm. This sort of radiation can be used for pumping an optical parametric amplifier for optical stochastic cooling in relativistic heavy ion collider, for laser ablation, and for studying vibrational and rotational relaxation of CO and NO molecules. 相似文献

We describe a novel type of an optical packet switch with an optical header processor based on optical signal processing and wavelength routing architecture. It consists of an optical digital-to-analog conversion-type header processor, wavelength selection portion with an electrically tunable laser, a wavelength converter based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and wavelength routing by use of an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG), which is called a wavelength label switch (WLS). Wavelength switching of an electrically tunable laser, and wavelength conversion were successfully achieved within a few nanoseconds after recognition of an optical header using a two-bit optical header processor and a FPGA-based wavelength table. High-speed transfer performance of less than a few tens of nanoseconds and BER of less than 10-10 were verified in the wavelength routing operation among three assigned wavelengths. 相似文献

Single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have been investigated with ultrafast optical modulation. After injection of a subpicosecond laser pulse into the VCSEL cavity, nonlasing modes were excited and produced optical beating in the emission of the VCSEL. After these oscillations have died down, when the VCSEL is operating at high power and when the injected laser pulses exceed a power threshold as well, the injected laser pulses can induce the lasing to switch to a normally nonlasing mode with crossed polarization. Our measurements of the decay time of the nonlasing modes at low injected pulse energy are consistent with the interpretation of this switching as enabled by increased lifetime of the nonlasing modes at high power. 相似文献

A novel coupled multi-active-region large optical cavity structure cascaded by tunnel junction is proposed to solve the problems of catastrophic optical damage (COD) of facet and large vertical divergence caused by the thin emitting area in the conventional laser diode. For the laser with three active regions, a slope efficiency as high as 1.49 W/A, a vertical divergence angle of 17.4°, and a threshold current density of 271 A/cm2 are achieved. By optimizing the structure parameters, the beam quality is greatly improved, and the level of COD power increases more than two times compared with that of the conventional laser. 相似文献

We have demonstrated an efficient diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser at 1342 nm by using an uncoated Co2+:LaMgAl11O19 (Co2+:LMA) crystal as the saturable absorber. With the absorbed pump power of 11.7 W, the pulse width could be as low as 42 ns,
with a corresponding average output power of 580 mW. At around 40 kHz repetition rate, the energy of a single Q-switched pulse
was estimated to be about 14.5 μJ and the peak power was 346 W. The passive Q switching operation for the Co2+:LMA in different polarization states was also investigated.

There exists the problem in diagnostics of dense plasma (so-called Thomson diagnostics). For this purpose the plasma is illuminated by series of high energy laser pulses. The energy of each separate pulse is as large as 3 J, so it is impossible to generate a burst of such pulses by a single laser. In this situation, the pulses are generated by several independent lasers operating sequentially, and these pulses are to be directed along the same optical path. To form an optical path with λ = 1.064 μm and absolute value of the laser pulse energy of 3 J, a special refractive index matched twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell of type LCNP3, with switching on time τON smaller than 3 μs was applied. 相似文献

以TEA CO2激光器通常采用的平-凹光学稳定腔为基础,提出了一种新的波长选支方法——输出窗口镀膜选支方法。利用一台高平均功率TEA CO2激光器进行了选支实验研究,结合现有光学镀膜技术,得到了中心波长为9.3 μm的激光单谱线输出,其单脉冲能量及平均功率与激光器原中心波长10.6 μm单谱线输出的相应参数基本相当。研究发现,以相同单脉冲能量激光照射热敏纸时,中心波长9.3 μm激光光斑与中心波长10.6 μm的明显不同。同时,还设计出两波长窗口密闭免调切换装置,在一台激光器上实现了10.6,9.3 μm两个中心波长激光同等功率水平的免调切换输出,切换位置误差小于5″,密封性能满足使用要求。 相似文献

In this work, we report on the structural and optical properties of novel Ag0.98Cu0.02GaGe3Se8 single crystals that were synthesized by the Bridgman–Stockbarger technique. We have performed illumination by 10.6 μm CO2 pulsed laser working in the microsecond time duration regime. Such illumination allows causing substantial changes for both pure electronic nonlinear optical effects like optical second harmonic generation as well as piezooptical effects described by the fourth rank tensors. The measurements of the piezo-optical effects were carried out at different temperatures. The effects are observed only during the IR CO2 laser illumination and are disappeared after switching off the illumination. Simultaneously the IR induced optical second harmonic generation at Er:glass laser fundamental wavelength 1540 nm was performed during illumination by nanosecond Nd:YAG and Er3+:glass laser. The observed effects allow to use the studied materials as promising for IR-optoelectronic devices. 相似文献

We report the pulsed-diode-pumped and acoustics-optically Q-switched operation of a long-pulse-width Tm:YAG laser at room
temperature. Output energy for single pulse of 48 mJ is obtained under the incident pump energy of 217.3 mJ, corresponding
to a slope efficiency of 30.2% and an optical conversion efficiency of 22.1%. For the Q-switched regime, maximum pulse energy
of 3.25 mJ and the pulse width of 232.8 ns at the repetition rate of 30 Hz are achieved. The wavelength of the Q-switched
laser is 2.013 μm. A beam quality factor of M

We report a tunable, single-mode vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) format suitable for array operation, power scaling, fiber coupling, and operation in isolated environments such as those required by atom optics. The devices are fiber VCSELs, consisting of a semiconductor gain and mirror structure separated from a mirror-coated optical fiber by an air (or vacuum) gap. The gain structure has polymer microlenses fabricated on its surface, of characteristics suitable to focus the oscillating mode on both cavity mirrors, ensuring stable fundamental mode emission and high fiber coupling efficiency. We demonstrate such devices in continuous-wave operation at 1.03 microm at room temperature, with a single-mode tuning range of 13 nm, laser threshold as low as 2.5 mW, and a maximum fiber-coupled output power of 10 mW. 相似文献
