Glass transitions were observed in thin films of poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using a scanning nanocalorimetry technique which has both high sensitivity (10−9 J/K) and high scan rates (104-105 K/s). Samples were deposited by the spin-cast method. The thickness of samples was 100-400 nm. Glass transition temperature, obtained by nanocalorimetry, is shifted toward higher temperatures by 10-20 K and activation enthalpy of glass transition is shifted to lower values by factor of 2-4. The glass transition characteristics of both polymers are discussed in terms of the standard Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan (TNM) multi-parameter model. 相似文献

Poly[(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl methacrylate)] [poly(solketal methacrylate) (PSMA)] was synthesized by free radical polymerization. By partial hydrolysis of the acetal group, random copolymers of SMA with 2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate (DHPMA) were synthesized whereas complete cleavage lead to poly(2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PDHPMA). The copolymer composition was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy indicates the synthesis of random copolymers with different degrees of hydrogen bonding as measured by a shift of the OH vibration bands. The glass transition temperature of the random copolymers increases linearly with increasing DHPMA content, resulting in a positive deviation from the Fox equation. The thermal degradation of both homopolymers and their random copolymers has been studied. Finally, the solution behaviour of the copolymers and PDHPMA in water studied by dynamic light scattering showed a strong tendency of the polymer chains to form clusters in the size range of 15-62 nm. The size and the kind of associating interactions within the clusters strongly depend on the copolymer composition. 相似文献

The inherent miscibility and effects of reaction-induced changes on the phase behaviour of blends of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) with bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) were studied. The as-prepared (solution-cast) blends exhibited two well-spaced and separated glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and a heterogeneous phase-separated morphology, indicating an immiscible system. However, after annealing at high temperature (at 260 °C), the blends original two Tgs merged into one single Tg, and the annealed blends exhibited a homogeneous morphology, and turned from having a semicrystalline into having an amorphous nature upon extended annealing. The annealing-induced changes of phase behaviour in the blends were analyzed. The homogenization process of the blends upon heating is attributed to chemical transreactions between the PTT and PC chain segments, as evidenced with FT-IR characterization. The IR result showed a new aryl C-O vibration peak at 1,070 cm–1 for the annealed blends, which is characteristic of an aromatic polyester structure formed from exchange reactions between PTT and PC. The transreactions between PTT and PC led to a random copolymer comprised of PC/PTT segments, which is believed to serve as a compatibilizer at the beginning stage of transreactions, but at later stage, the random copolymer became the main species of blends and turned to a homogeneous and amorphous phase. 相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (polymer A) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) (polymer B) are known to form a thermodynamically miscible pair. In the present study the conclusion on miscibility of PVA/PVP solid blends, confirmed qualitatively (DMTA, FTIR) and quantitatively (DSC, χAB = − 0.69 at 503 K) is compared with the miscibility investigations of PVA/PVP solution blends by the technique of dilute solution viscometry. The miscibility of the ternary (polymer A/ polymer B/ solvent) system is estimated on the basis of experimental and ideal values of the viscosity parameters k, b and [η]. It is found that the conclusions on miscibility or nonmiscibility drawn from viscosity measurements in dilute solution blends depend: (i) on the applied extrapolation method used for the determination of the viscosity interaction parameters, (ii) on the assumed definition of the ideal values and (iii) on the thermodynamic quality of the solvent, which in the case of PVA depends on its degree of hydrolysis. Hence, viscometric investigations of dilute PVA/PVP solution blends have revealed that viscometry, widely used in the literature for estimation of polymer-polymer miscibility can not be recommended as a sole method to presume the miscibility of a polymer pair. 相似文献

In this work blends of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) with different ethylene contents (27, 32, 38 and 44 mol%) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared by mechanical mixing in the melted state. The miscibility and melting behavior as a function of blend composition and the ethylene content in EVOH copolymers were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The morphology of the cryofractured surfaces was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC and DMTA data show that EVOH/PMMA blends are immiscible, independent of EVOH and blend composition. The SEM analysis in agreement with DMTA analysis indicates that the morphology of phases depends on the blend composition, with phase inversion occurring as the concentration of one or other polymer component increases. However, the copolymer composition apparently does not affect the domain size distribution for blends containing 20 wt% of EVOH or 20 wt% of PMMA. A better phase adhesion is observed mainly for blends with 50 wt% of each polymer component. 相似文献

Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Various PVDF/PMMA (poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate)) blends were selected for mechanical testing in compression. At low PVDF content (less than 50/50 w/w), the blends remain amorphous and PVDF and PMMA are fully miscible. In PVDF-richer blends, PVDF crystallizes in part, leading to a PMMA-enriched homogeneous amorphous phase. In this study, the degree of crystallinity was set at equilibrium by appropriate annealing of the samples before testing. Mechanical analysis was focused on the low deformation range, and especially on the yield region. Depending on the test temperature and blend composition, three types of response were identified, depending on whether plastic deformation is influenced: 1) by the PMMA secondary relaxation motions, 2) by the PVDF/PMMA glass transition motions, or 3) by the crystallite-constrained PVDF chains. 相似文献

Thermal oxidation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its blends with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were studied using oxygen uptake measurements. The rates of oxidation and maximum oxygen uptake contents were reduced as the content of PMMA was increased in the blends. The results were indicative of a stabilizing effect by PMMA on the oxidation of PEO. The oxidation reaction at 140°C was stopped at various stages and PMMA was separated from PEO and its molecular weights were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The decrease in the number-average molecular weight of PMMA was larger as the content of PEO increased in the blends. The visual appearance of the films suggested that phase separation did not occur after thermal oxidation. The activation energy for the rates of oxidation in the blends was slightly increased compared to pure PEO. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Poly(methylphenylsiloxane)–poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers (PSXE-g-PMMA) were prepared by condensation reaction of poly(methylphenylsiloxane)-containing epoxy resin (PSXE) with carboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and they were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), infrared (IR), and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The microstructure of the PSXE-g-PMMA graft copolymer was investigated by proton spin–spin relaxation T2 measurements. The thermal stability and apparent activation energy for thermal degradation of these copolymers were studied by thermogravimetry and compared with unmodified PMMA. The incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) segments in graft copolymers improved thermal stability of PMMA and enhanced the activation energy for thermal degradation of PMMA. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amphiphilic triblock copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PEO-b-PMMA) with well-defined structure were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by the PEO macroinitiator. The macroinitiator and triblock copolymer with different PMMA and/or PEO block lengths were characterized with 1H and 13C NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The micelle formed by these triblock copolymers in aqueous solutions was detected by fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of pyrene probe. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) ranged from 0.0019 to 0.016 mg/mL and increased with increasing PMMA block length, while the PEO block length had less effect on the CMC. The partition constant Kv for pyrene in the micelle and in aqueous solution was about 105. The triblock copolymer appeared to form the micelles with hydrophobic PMMA core and hydrophilic PEO loop chain corona. The hydrodynamic radius Rh,app of the micelle measured with dynamic light scattering (DLS) ranged from 17.3 to 24.0 nm and increased with increasing PEO block length to form thicker corona. The spherical shape of the micelle of the triblock copolymers was observed with an atomic force microscope (AFM). Increasing hydrophobic PMMA block length effectively promoted the micelle formation in aqueous solutions, but the micelles were stable even only with short PMMA blocks. 相似文献

Blends of isotactic (natural) poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are partially miscible, and PHB in excess of 20 wt % segregates as a partially crystalline pure phase. Copolymers containing atactic PHB chains grafted onto a PMMA backbone are used to compatibilize phase‐separated PHB/PMMA blends. Two poly(methyl methacrylate‐g‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(MMA‐g‐HB)] copolymers with different grafting densities and the same length of the grafted chain have been investigated. The copolymer with higher grafting density, containing 67 mol % hydroxybutyrate units, has a beneficial effect on the mechanical properties of PHB/PMMA blends with 30–50% PHB content, which show a remarkable increase in ductility. The main effect of copolymer addition is the inhibition of PHB crystallization. No compatibilizing effect on PHB/PMMA blends with PHB contents higher than 50% is observed with various amounts of P(MMA‐g‐HB) copolymer. In these blends, the graft copolymer is not able to prevent PHB crystallization, and the ternary PHB/PMMA/P(MMA‐g‐HB) blends remain crystalline and brittle. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) have been combined to achieve the complete microstructural characterization of a poly(methacrylic acid)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMAA-PMMA) copolymer synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization. Various PMAA-PMMA species could be identified which mainly differ in terms of terminaisons. 1H and 13C NMR experiments revealed the structure of the end-groups as well as the proportion of each co-monomer in the copolymers. These end-group masses were further confirmed from m/z values of doubly charged copolymer anions detected in the single stage mass spectrum. In contrast, copolymer composition derived from MS data was not consistent with NMR results, obviously due to strong mass bias well known to occur during electrospray ionization of these polymeric species. Tandem mass spectrometry could reveal the random nature of the copolymer based on typical dissociation reactions, i.e., water elimination occurred from any two contiguous MAA units while MAA-MMA pairs gave rise to the loss of a methanol molecule. Polymer backbone cleavages were also observed to occur and gave low abundance fragment ions which allowed the structure of the initiating end-group to be confirmed. 相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) with a thiophene end group having narrow polydispersity was prepared by the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) technique. Subsequently, electrically conducting block copolymers of thiophene-capped poly(methyl methacrylate) with pyrrole were synthesized by using p-toluene sulfonic acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the supporting electrolytes via constant potential electrolysis. Characterization of the block copolymers were performed by CV, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and DSC analyses. Electrical conductivities were evaluated by the four-probe technique. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Blends of amorphous poly(DL‐lactide) (DL‐PLA) and crystalline poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared by both solution/precipitation and solution‐casting film methods. The miscibility, crystallization behavior, and component interaction of these blends were examined by differential scanning calorimetry. Only one glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was found in the DL‐PLA/PMMA solution/precipitation blends, indicating miscibility in this system. Two isolated Tg's appeared in the DL‐PLA/PMMA solution‐casting film blends, suggesting two segregated phases in the blend system, but evidence showed that two components were partially miscible. In the PLLA/PMMA blend, the crystallization of PLLA was greatly restricted by amorphous PMMA. Once the thermal history of the blend was destroyed, PLLA and PMMA were miscible. The Tg composition relationship for both DL‐PLA/PMMA and PLLA/PMMA miscible systems obeyed the Gordon–Taylor equation. Experiment results indicated that there is no more favorable trend of DL‐PLA to form miscible blends with PMMA than PLLA when PLLA is in the amorphous state. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We employed high‐resolution 13C cross‐polarization/magic‐angle‐spinning/dipolar‐decoupling NMR spectroscopy to investigate the miscibility and phase behavior of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends. The spin–lattice relaxation times of protons in both the laboratory and rotating frames [T1(H) and T1ρ(H), respectively] were indirectly measured through 13C resonances. The T1(H) results indicate that the blends are homogeneous, at least on a scale of 200–300 Å, confirming the miscibility of the system from a differential scanning calorimetry study in terms of the replacement of the glass‐transition‐temperature feature. The single decay and composition‐dependent T1ρ(H) values for each blend further demonstrate that the spin diffusion among all protons in the blends averages out the whole relaxation process; therefore, the blends are homogeneous on a scale of 18–20 Å. The microcrystallinity of PVC disappears upon blending with PMMA, indicating intimate mixing of the two polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The binary blend of poly(ethylene oxide)/atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) is examined using hot-stage atomic-force microscopy (AFM) in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. It was found possible to follow in real time the melting process, which reveals itself to be nonuniform. This effect is ascribed to the presence of lamellae having different thicknesses. The crystallization process of poly(ethylene oxide) from the miscible melt is also followed in real time by AFM, affording detailed images of the impingement of adjacent spherulites and direct observation of lamellar growth and subsequent polymer solidification in the interlamellar space.© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An amphiphilic graft copolymer was prepared by transesterification of poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (MPEG2000). The grafting reaction was performed in melt at 155°C. The purified graft copolymer was blended into poly(methyl methacrylate) in concentrations of 1.5-30 wt %, either by mixing in chloroform solution or by melt mixing by means of a twin-screw extruder or a Brabender blender. Films of the blends were prepared by solution casting onto glass plates or by hot pressing between polished Al plates. At concentrations up to 20% of the graft copolymer homogeneous blends were obtained. At higher concentrations the blends were heterogeneous, and side-chain crystallinity was detectable by DSC analysis. The surface properties of the films were studied by measurements of water contact angles. The surface accumulation of the graft copolymer was demonstrated as a large increase in the wetting angle hysteresis, and found to depend on the procedure for film preparation as well as the casting substrate. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

The phenomenon of forced compatibilization has been studied in poly(methyl acrylate)-polystyrene PMA-i-PS sequential interpenetrating
polymer networks, IPNs, using differential scanning calorimetry. Both networks in the IPN were prepared using the same amount
of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA, as crosslinking agent. The samples were subjected to thermal treatments which included
annealing at different ageing temperatures T
a, for 300 min. From the DSC curves, recorded on heating the enthalpy loss during the isothermal annealing, Δh
a was calculated. The dependence of Dh
a with the annealing temperature was used to define the temperature interval in which the conformational mobility is significant.
The comparison of the Δh
a(T
a) curves obtained in an IPN and the results obtained with the pure component homo-networks with the same crosslinking density
reveal some details of the miscibility of the IPN. In the case of the IPN crosslinked with 10% EGDMA, two peaks are apparent
in the Δh
a(T
a) curve, but the high-temperature peak is shifted towards lower temperatures compared to that of the polystyrene network while
the low-temperature one is nearly at the same temperature than the one of the poly(methyl acrylate) homonetwork. This means
that compatibilization is not complete and phase separation still exists even at this high crosslinking density. The different
behaviour of the high and low temperature transitions can be explained by the dynamic heterogeneity of the sample, i.e. by
the different length of cooperativity of the conformational rearrangements of PMA and PS domains at any temperature.

The separation of telechelic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) prepolymers based on the number of end-groups under critical liquid chromatography (LC) conditions has been studied using a bare-silica column, which can interact with polar functional groups. The critical solvent compositions for non-functional, mono-functional and bi-functional PMMAs were determined in normal-phase LC using mixtures of acetonitrile and dichloromethane (DCM) of varying composition as the mobile phase. The telechelic prepolymers were successfully separated according to hydroxyl (OH) functionality (with zero, one, or two OH groups, respectively) under the critical conditions, in which fast (5 min), base-line separations were obtained independent of molecular weight. Changing the column temperature, flow rate, and mobile-phase composition within a certain range did not affect the functionality separation. Therefore this isocratic LC separation method is quite robust. Evaporative light-scattering detector (ELSD) calibration curves were used for the quantitative analysis of functional PMMA prepolymers. 相似文献

Direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DIP-MS) analyses of polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl acetate), (PC/PMMA/PVAc), ternary blends have been performed. The PC/PMMA/PVAc ternary blends were obtained by coalescing from their common γ-cyclodextrin-inclusion compounds (CD-ICs), through the removal of the γ-CD host (coalesced blend), and by a co-precipitation method (physical blend). The coalesced ternary blend showed different thermal behaviors compared to the co-precipitated physical blend. The stability of PC chains decreased due to the reactions of CH3COOH formed by deacetylation of PVAc above 300 °C, for both coalesced and physical blends. This process was more effective for the physical blend most likely due to the enhanced diffusion of CH3COOH into the amorphous PC domains, where it can further react producing low molecular weight PC fragments bearing methyl carbonate chain ends. The decrease in thermal stability of PC chains was less significant for the coalesced ternary blend indicating that the diffusion of CH3COOH was either somewhat limited or competed with intermolecular reactions between PMMA and PC and between PMMA and PVAc, which were detected and were associated with their close proximity in the intimately mixed coalesced PC/PMMA/PVAc ternary blend. 相似文献
