To improve the vapor permeation performance of aqueous alcohol mixtures, acrylamide (AAm) plasma activation then post-graft polymerization onto an expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (e-PTFE) membrane, e-PTFE-g-AAm, was synthesized in this study. The surface properties of the e-PTFE-g-AAm membrane were characterized using ATR/FTIR, SEM, AFM and the water surface contact angle. The degree of grafting increases with increasing polymerization temperature. A maximum value was obtained at 80 °C. The water contact angle of the pristine e-PTFE membrane and the e-PTFE-g-AAm membrane with a 21% grafting degree was 109.7° and 34.1°, respectively. Optimum vapor permeation performance was obtained using an e-PTFE-g-AAm membrane with a 21% grafting degree for a 90 wt.% aqueous ethanol solution, giving a permeate water concentration of 99.4% and a permeation rate of 648 g/m2 h.  相似文献

Chitosan/PTFE composite membranes were prepared from casting a γ-(glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)-containing chitosan solution on poly(styrene sulfuric acid) grafted expended poly(tetrafluoroethylene) film surface. The adhesion between the chitosan skin layer and the PTFE substrate was pretty good to warrant the high performance of chitosan/PTFE composite membranes using in pervaporation dehydration processes on isopropanol. The chitosan/PTFE membrane exhibited a permeation flux of 1730 g/m2 h and a separation factor of 775 at 70 °C on pervaporation dehydration of a 70 wt% isopropanol aqueous solution. The membrane also survived after a long-term operation test in 45 days.  相似文献

The pervaporation and vapor permeation performance of symmetrical and asymmetrical polycarbonate membranes, prepared via a dry-phase inversion and wet-phase inversion methods, respectively, were studied by measuring the permeation rate and separation factor. It was found that the polymer concentration effect on the pervaporation performance for the symmetrical polycarbonate membrane was lower than that for the asymmetrical polycarbonate membrane. Compared with pervaporation, vapor permeation has a significantly increased separation factor with a decreased permeation rate for the symmetrical polycarbonate membrane. Water molecules preferentially dissolve into the symmetrical polycarbonate membrane and diffuse easily through the membrane.  相似文献

In this article, expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (e-PTFE) membrane surface modification was carried out using acetylene/nitrogen plasma treatment (p-e-PTFE). The variation in surface morphology of the p-e-PTFE membranes was confirmed by FTIR-ATR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. It was found that the surface hydrophilicity increased with increasing nitrogen content in the feed gas mixture, RF power, and plasma treatment time. The surface pore size decreased with increasing RF power and plasma treatment time. The water contact angles of the modified e-PTFE membrane decreased from 125.8° to 34.1° through the acetylene/nitrogen plasma treatment.  相似文献

In the present study, the permeation behavior of methanol and methyl acetate in the pervaporation (PV) experiments are compared with those in vapor permeation (VP) experiments using a PVA-based composite membrane. Experiments have been carried out to study the selectivity and mass transport flux of the systems under varying operations conditions of feed temperature (40–60 °C) and feed methanol concentrations (2–34 wt%). The selected membrane was found to be methanol selective. Results show higher permeation flux but a similar separation factor for methanol in PV than in VP. For PV operation, the resulting separation factor at 60 °C shows a monotonous decrease (6.4–4.1) as the alcohol concentration in the feed mixture increases (2.3–34 wt%), whereas the total flux increases from 0.97 to 7.9 kg m−2 h−1. Based on the solution-diffusion theory, a mathematical model that describes satisfactorily the permeation fluxes of methanol and methyl acetate in both the PV and VP processes has been applied. The fluxes of both permeants can be explained by the solution-diffusion model with variable diffusion coefficients dependent on MeOH concentration in the membrane. Both PV and VP processes can be described with the same model but using different fitting parameters.  相似文献

The water‐vapor permeability of poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PA‐18) was measured as a function of temperature in the region traversing its melting point (50 °C). The molten‐state permeability of PA‐18 is comparable to that of shorter side‐chain methacrylate polymers. Water permeability in the semicrystalline state of PA‐18 is similar to that of polyethylene at comparable crystallinity levels. The permeation switch, or change in permeability with the traversing of the melting point, for water is discussed in the context of previous results for other penetrants in this and other side‐chain crystalline polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Crosslinked hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HPAE) membranes were prepared by crosslinking its terminal hydroxyl groups with glutaraldehyde (GA). The crosslinked HPAE membranes showed high reactivity and good hydrophilicity. The crosslinking degree was investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectra (FT-IR). Atom force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) reveals that the crosslinked HPAE films have smooth surfaces, dense and homogenous matrices. The swelling degree of the membrane was higher in water than that in isopropanol. From the permeation of pure water through the HPAE membrane, the effect of hydroxyl/aldehyde group ratio on the permeation flux and separation factor was investigated. The results indicated that the permeation flux increase was accompanied with the separation factor decrease if the water concentration increased in the feed solution.  相似文献

Blend membranes prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and used in the pervaporation dehydration of 1,4-dioxane. Membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (X-RD) to assess, respectively, the intermolecular interactions, thermal stability and crystallinity. Equilibrium sorption studies were carried out in pure liquids and binary mixtures of different compositions of water + 1,4-dioxane mixtures to assess the polymer–liquid interactions. The crosslinked membrane showed a good potential in breaking the azeotrope of 82 wt.% aqueous 1,4-dioxane giving a selectivity of 117 with a reasonable water flux of 0.37 kg/m2 h. The effect of operating parameters such as feed composition, membrane thickness and permeate pressure was evaluated.  相似文献

The gas permeation characteristics of poly(silamine) membrane, which consists of alternating 3,3-dimethyl-3-silapentane and N,N′-diethylethylenediamine units in the main chain, were investigated. Though poly(silamine) shows high flexibility (glass transition temperature of −88°C), the gas permeabilities were much lower than those of other rubbery polymers such as poly(dimethylsiloxane) and natural rubber. The activation energies of diffusion in poly(silamine) were much higher than that of natural rubber. On the basis of these results, we propose a model such that the interaction between the Si atom and gas molecules (O2 and N2) prevents the free diffusion of the gas molecule in the poly(silamine) membrane. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

NaY zeolite tubular membranes in an industrial scale of 80 cm long were synthesized on monolayer and asymmetric porous supports. The quality of synthesized membranes were evaluated by pervaporation (PV) experiments in 80 cm long at 75 °C in a mixture of water (10 wt.%)/ethanol (90 wt.%), resulting in higher permeation fluxes of 5.1 kg m−2 h−1 in the monolayer type membrane and of 9.1–10.1 kg m−2 h−1 in the asymmetric-type membranes, respectively. The uniformity with small performance fluctuation in longitudinal direction of the membranes were observed by PV for 10–12 cm long samples at 50 °C in a mixture of methanol (10 wt.%)/MTBE (90 wt.%). The ethanol single component permeation experiments in PV and vapor permeation (VP) up to 130 °C and 570 kPa were performed to determine the relations between the ethanol flux and the ethanol pressure difference across the membrane which is represented by permeance (Π, mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1) for estimate of potential of ethanol extraction through the present NaY zeolite membranes applying feasible studies. Results indicate that (1) the permeation fluxes are linearly proportional to the driving force of vapor pressure for each sample in VP and PV. The permeances through an asymmetric support type membrane were rather constant of 0.6–1.2 × 10−7 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1 in the wide temperature range of 90–130 °C in PV and VP, indicating that the ethanol permeances have weak temperature dependency with the feed at the saturated vapor pressure.

The results of superheating VP experiments showed that ethanol permeation fluxes are increased with increasing of the degree of superheating at a given constant feed vapor pressure. The ethanol permeances are increased with increasing of temperature at a given feed vapor pressure. The superheating VP could be a feasible process in industry.  相似文献

Preferential sorptions and pervaporation selectivities in poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane for various binary liquid mixtures were investigated. Methanol/n-propanol, benzene/n-hexane, and ethanol/water mixtures were selected as the binary liquid mixture. In the methanol/n-propanol mixture, methanol was preferentially sorbed in the PVC membrane and predominantly permeated. In the benzene/n-hexane mixture, benzene was incorporated and permeated preferentially. In the ethanol/water mixture, ethanol was preferentially sorbed in the PVC membrane and water was preferentially permeated. The preferential sorptions were analyzed according to Mulder's model derived from Flory-Huggins thermodynamics. The pervaporation selectivity in these systems were discussed using a sorption selectivity and diffusion selectivity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Direct spectroscopic evidence for radiation-induced crosslinking of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is presented for all x-ray and electron dose levels above which it is possible to distinguish between deliberately introduced radiation damage and the x-ray damage inherent in obtaining an x-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). The C (1s) spectrum obtained after irradiation with 2 keV electrons for all doses greater than 1 μA-min/cm2 consists of a four-peak spectrum identical to that previously obtained for plasma-polymerized tetrafluoroethylene and assigned to carbon atoms with variable numbers of bound F atoms (CF3, CF2, CF1, and CF0). X-ray irradiated PTFE can be fitted with the same four-peak spectrum. At or below an electron dose level of 1 μA-min/cm2, the radiation damage is comparable to that produced by the x-ray dose necessary to obtain an XPS spectrum. The CF1 and CF0 components increase with increasing electron dose, and at high electron doses dominate the spectrum. With increasing dose the CF3 component approaches a constant value while both the CF2 component and the total F : C ratio decreases. These four components are those expected to result from radiation-induced crosslinking reactions of the polymer and are consistent with previous suggestions that crosslinking is the basis of radiation patterned adhesion to PTFE. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this study CO2, H2/H2O and H2O low pressure plasma treatment of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) foils and of thin plasma deposited fluorocarbon polymer (PDFP) films with a structure close to PTFE was investigated. The properties of the plasma were analyzed by mass spectroscopy (MS) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The modified fluorocarbon surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, electrokinetic measurements and dynamic contact angle measurements in order to find optimized treatment conditions. The results of the surface modification were compared with respect to the efficiency of the plasma treatment and the stability of the modification effect at different ambient conditions. It was shown that the H2O plasma treatment is the most effective process for the intended modification. The hydrophobic PTFE surface was converted into a more hydrophilic one. The introduced radicals after the H2O plasma treatment can be utilized subsequently for post plasma reactions such as grafting processes.  相似文献

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films were treated with a low-temperature cascade arc torch (LTCAT) and radio-frequency (RF) plasmas of argon and hydrogen. The plasma-treatment effect on the PTFE surface was studied with contact-angle measurement and scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). LTCAT argon plasma, which is recognized as a beam of excited argon neutrals, was very efficient at improving the surface hydrophilicity of PTFE. For both the LTCAT and RF operation, argon plasma was more effective at modifying the surface wettability of PTFE films than hydrogen plasma was. Furthermore, the sample positions (inside or beyond the glow region) had a strong impact on the efficiency of the plasma treatment. SEM surface images indicated that no significant morphology change was induced on the PTFE films exposed to a LTCAT and RF argon plasmas. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Homogeneous membranes were prepared by blending poly(acrylic acid) with poly(vinyl alcohol). These blend membranes were evaluated for the selective separation of alcohols from toluene by pervaporation. The flux and selectivity of the membranes were determined both as a function of the blend composition and of the feed mixture composition. The results showed that a polymer blending method could be very useful to develop new membranes with improved permselectivity. The pervaporation properties could be optimized by adjusting the blend composition. All the blend membranes tested showed a decrease in flux with increasing poly(vinyl alcohol) content for both methanol—toluene and ethanol—toluene liquid mixtures. The alcohols permeated preferentially through all tested blend membranes, and the selectivity values increased with increasing poly(vinyl alcohol) content. The pervaporation characteristics of the blend membranes were also strongly influenced by the feed mixture composition. The fluxes increased exponentially with increasing alcohol concentration in the feed mixtures, whereas the selectivities decreased for both liquid mixtures.  相似文献

The knowledge of sorption and diffusion of liquids or vapors and their mixtures in nonporous membranes facilitates systematic membrane selection and process design. A novel experimental technique for the measurement of sorption and diffusion in nonporous membranes is described. An experimental apparatus has been designed for carrying out the transient permeation experiments. A general time-lag analysis procedure has also been developed in order to obtain the sorption and diffusion parameters from the transient permeation data. The effects of concentration dependent diffusivities, polymer swelling and a thermodynamic correction factor have been included in the analysis. Transient permeation experiments have been carried out to determine the sorption and diffusion of acetone in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The results obtained are in good agreement with data from the literature, indicating that the proposed technique is suitable for the measurement of sorption and diffusion in nonporous membranes.  相似文献

Temperature modulated differential calorimetry (TMDSC) is used to examine the crystal-crystal transitions of poly(tetrafluoroethylene). This study gives new information about the dynamic thermal behavior of such transitions. The involvement of reversible and irreversible processes during the phenomenon is observed, which are related to the order-disorder changes occurring during the transition. This study adds a new example to the response of TMDSC during first order transitions.  相似文献

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate), PGMA, chains in linear and arborescent structures were incorporated onto surfaces of poly(tetrafluoroethylene), PTFE, films by hydrogen plasma and ozone treatment and atom transfer radical polymerization. The epoxide groups of the PGMA chains were further reacted with acetic acid (AAc), oxalic acid (XAc), allyl amine (AA), and ethylenediamine (EDN) to introduce hydroxyl and amine groups to the surfaces of the PTFE films. Surface characterizations performed by Fourier Transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the surface modification and the chemical structure. The PGMA chains in arborescent structures show a high effectiveness for the enhancement of the adhesion of PTFE films. The adhesion of PTFE films was also significantly enhanced by ring-opening reactions of the PGMA epoxide groups with acetic acid and amine compounds. A high value of 9.5 N cm(-1) in the optimum 180 degrees peel strength test was observed with PTFE/copper assemblies.  相似文献

Novel nanocomposite membranes (PVA–CNT(CS)) were prepared by incorporating chitosan-wrapped multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). To further explore the intrinsic correlation between pervaporation performance and free volume characteristics, molecular dynamics simulation was first introduced to qualitatively analyze the contribution of carbon nanotube incorporation on improving free volume characteristics of the nanocomposite membranes. Secondly, the pervaporation performance of PVA–CNT(CS) nanocomposite membranes was investigated using permeation flux and separation factor as evaluating parameters. For benzene/cyclohexane (50/50, w/w) mixtures at 323 K, permeation flux and separation factor of pure PVA membrane are only 20.3 g/(m2 h) and 9.6, respectively, while the corresponding values of PVA–CNT(CS) (CNT content: 1%) nanocomposite membrane are 65.9 g/(m2 h) and 53.4. In order to explain the simultaneous increase of permeation flux and separation factor, as well as to check the calculation reliability of molecular dynamics simulation, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) analysis was employed.  相似文献

Pervaporation (PV) separation of water + isopropanol and water + 1,4-dioxane mixtures has been attempted using the blend membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with 5 wt.% of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). These results have been compared with the plain PVA membrane. Both plain PVA and PVA/PMMA blend membranes have been crosslinked with glutaraldehyde in an acidic medium. The membranes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and universal testing machine. Pervaporation separation experiments have been performed at 30 °C for 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 wt.% of feed water mixtures containing isopropanol as well as 1,4-dioxane. PVA/PMMA blend membrane has shown a selectivity of 400 for 10 wt.% of water in water + isopropanol feed, while for water + 1,4-dioxane feed mixture, membrane selectivity to water was 104 at 30 °C. For both the feed mixtures, selectivity for the blend membrane was higher than that observed for plain PVA membrane, but flux of the blend membrane was lower than that observed for the plain PVA membrane. Membranes of this study are able to remove as much as 98 wt.% of water from the feed mixtures of water + isopropanol, while 92 wt.% of water was removed from water + 1,4-dioxane feed mixtures at 30 °C. Flux of water increased for both the feed mixtures, while the selectivity decreased at higher feed water concentrations. The same trends were observed at 40 and 50 °C for 10, 15 and 20 wt.% of water mixtures containing isopropanol as well as 1,4-dioxane feed mixtures, which also covered their azeotropic composition ranges. Membrane performance was studied by calculating flux (Jp), selectivity (), pervaporation separation index (PSI) and enrichment factor (β). Permeation flux followed the Arrhenius trend over the range of temperatures investigated. It was found that by introducing a hydrophobic PMMA polymer into a hydrophilic PVA, the selectivity increased dramatically, while flux decreased compared to plain PVA, due to a loss in PVA chain relaxation.  相似文献
