In this paper we derive a formula relating the energy and the Fourier transform of a finite measure on the -dimensional torus which is similar to the well-known formula for measures on .

We apply the formula to obtain estimates on the Hausdorff dimension of Riesz product measures. These give improvements on the earlier, classical results which were based on completely different techniques.

We investigate a necessary and sufficient condition which ensures validity of the Bedrosian identity for the Hilbert transform of a product function . Convenient sufficient conditions are presented, which cover the classical Bedrosian theorem and provide us with new insightful information.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to define and compute the index of an isolated critical point for densely defined operators of type acting from a real, reflexive and separable Banach space into This index is defined via a degree theory for such operators which has been recently developed by the authors. The calculation of the index is achieved by the introduction of a special linearization of the nonlinear operator at the critical point. This linearization is a new tool even for continuous everywhere defined operators which are not necessarily Fréchet differentiable. Various cases of operators are considered: unbounded nonlinear operators with unbounded linearization, bounded nonlinear operators with bounded linearization, and operators in Hilbert spaces. Examples and counterexamples are given in 2,$"> illustrating the main results. The associated bifurcation problem for a pair of operators is also considered. The main results of the paper are substantial extensions and improvements of the classical results of Leray and Schauder (for continuous operators of Leray-Schauder type) as well as the results of Skrypnik (for bounded demicontinuous mappings of type Applications to nonlinear Dirichlet problems have appeared elsewhere.

For a family of elliptic pseudodifferential operators we show there is a natural zeta-form and zeta-determinant form in the ring of smooth differential forms on the parameterizing manifold, generalizing the classical single operator zeta-function and zeta-determinant. We show that the zeta forms extend the Atiyah-Bott-Seeley formula for the index of an elliptic operator to a family of elliptic operators, while the zeta-determinant form leads to a graded Chern class form for the index bundle. Globally, the zeta-form and zeta-determinant form exist only at the level of -theory as maps to cohomology.

We study inequalities connecting a product of uniform norms of polynomials with the norm of their product. This subject includes the well known Gel'fond-Mahler inequalities for the unit disk and Kneser inequality for the segment . Using tools of complex analysis and potential theory, we prove a sharp inequality for norms of products of algebraic polynomials over an arbitrary compact set of positive logarithmic capacity in the complex plane. The above classical results are contained in our theorem as special cases.

It is shown that the asymptotically extremal sequences of polynomials, for which this inequality becomes an asymptotic equality, are characterized by their asymptotically uniform zero distributions. We also relate asymptotically extremal polynomials to the classical polynomials with asymptotically minimal norms.

The prolate spheroidal wave functions, which are a special case of the spheroidal wave functions, possess a very surprising and unique property. They are an orthogonal basis of both and a subspace of known as the Paley-Wiener space of bandlimited functions. They also satisfy a discrete orthogonality relation. No other system of classical orthogonal functions is known to possess this strange property. This raises the question of whether there are other systems possessing this property.

The aim of the article is to answer this question in the affirmative by providing an algorithm to generate such systems and then demonstrating the algorithm by a new example.

Here denotes outward unit spatial normal to the free boundary. In addition, initial data are specified, as well as either Dirichlet or Neumann data on the parabolic boundary of . This problem arises in combustion theory as a limit situation in the propagation of premixed flames (high activation energy limit).

The problem admits classical solutions only for good data and for small times. Several generalized concepts of solution have been proposed, among them the concepts of limit solution and viscosity solution. We investigate conditions under which the three concepts agree and produce a unique solution.

It is shown that is quasinormal, and the sequences in which do not have convergent subsequences are characterized. The method also yields a new proof of the result that transcendental entire functions have infinitely many periodic points of all periods greater than one.

Recently, a fast approximate algorithm for the evaluation of expansions in terms of standard -orthonormal spherical harmonics at arbitrary nodes on the sphere has been proposed in [S. Kunis and D. Potts. Fast spherical Fourier algorithms. J. Comput. Appl. Math., 161:75-98, 2003]. The aim of this paper is to develop a new fast algorithm for the adjoint problem which can be used to compute expansion coefficients from sampled data by means of quadrature rules.

We give a formulation in matrix-vector notation and an explicit factorisation of the spherical Fourier matrix based on the former algorithm. Starting from this, we obtain the corresponding factorisation of the adjoint spherical Fourier matrix and are able to describe the associated algorithm for the adjoint transformation which can be employed to evaluate quadrature rules for arbitrary weights and nodes on the sphere. We provide results of numerical tests showing the stability of the obtained algorithm using as examples classical Gauß-Legendre and Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature rules as well as the HEALPix pixelation scheme and an equidistribution.

The 2-twist spun trefoil is an example of a sphere that is knotted in 4-dimensional space. A proof is given in this paper that this sphere is distinct from the same sphere with its orientation reversed. Our proof is based on a state-sum invariant for knotted surfaces developed via a cohomology theory of racks and quandles (also known as distributive groupoids).

A quandle is a set with a binary operation -- the axioms of which model the Reidemeister moves in classical knot theory. Colorings of diagrams of knotted curves and surfaces by quandle elements, together with cocycles of quandles, are used to define state-sum invariants for knotted circles in -space and knotted surfaces in -space.

Cohomology groups of various quandles are computed herein and applied to the study of the state-sum invariants. Non-triviality of the invariants is proved for a variety of knots and links, and conversely, knot invariants are used to prove non-triviality of cohomology for a variety of quandles.

The open intervals in the Bruhat order on twisted involutions in a Coxeter group are shown to be PL spheres. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti and sharpens the known fact that these posets are Gorenstein over .

We also introduce a Boolean cell complex which is an analogue for twisted involutions of the Coxeter complex. Several classical Coxeter complex properties are shared by our complex. When the group is finite, it is a shellable sphere, shelling orders being given by the linear extensions of the weak order on twisted involutions. Furthermore, the -polynomial of the complex coincides with the polynomial counting twisted involutions by descents. In particular, this gives a type-independent proof that the latter is symmetric.

Cameron and Storvick introduced the concept of a sequential Fourier-Feynman transform and established the existence of this transform for functionals in a Banach algebra of bounded functionals on classical Wiener space. In this paper we investigate various relationships between the sequential Fourier-Feynman transform and the convolution product for functionals which need not be bounded or continuous. Also we study the relationships involving this transform and the first variation.
