We consider systems of moving particles in 1-dimensional space interacting through energy storage sites. The ends of the systems are coupled to heat baths, and resulting steady states are studied. When the two heat baths are equal, an explicit formula for the (unique) equilibrium distribution is given. The bulk of the paper concerns nonequilibrium steady states, i.e., when the chain is coupled to two unequal heat baths. Rigorous results including ergodicity are proved. Numerical studies are carried out for two types of bath distributions. For chains driven by exponential baths, our main finding is that the system does not approach local thermodynamic equilibrium as system size tends to infinity. For bath distributions that are sharply peaked Gaussians, in spite of the near-integrable dynamics, transport properties are found to be more normal than expected.  相似文献

The existence and uniqueness of a steady state for nonequilibrium systems (NESS) is a fundamental subject and a main theme of research in statistical mechanics for decades. For Gaussian systems, such as a chain of classical harmonic oscillators connected at each end to a heat bath, and for classical anharmonic oscillators under specified conditions, definitive answers exist in the form of proven theorems. Answering this question for quantum many-body systems poses a challenge for the present. In this work we address this issue by deriving the stochastic equations for the reduced system with self-consistent backaction from the two baths, calculating the energy flow from one bath to the chain to the other bath, and exhibiting a power balance relation in the total (chain + baths) system which testifies to the existence of a NESS in this system at late times. Its insensitivity to the initial conditions of the chain corroborates to its uniqueness. The functional method we adopt here entails the use of the influence functional, the coarse-grained and stochastic effective actions, from which one can derive the stochastic equations and calculate the average values of physical variables in open quantum systems. This involves both taking the expectation values of quantum operators of the system and the distributional averages of stochastic variables stemming from the coarse-grained environment. This method though formal in appearance is compact and complete. It can also easily accommodate perturbative techniques and diagrammatic methods from field theory. Taken all together it provides a solid platform for carrying out systematic investigations into the nonequilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems and quantum thermodynamics.  相似文献

A model for self-propulsion of a colloidal particle--the osmotic motor--immersed in a dispersion of "bath" particles is presented. The nonequilibrium concentration of bath particles induced by a surface chemical reaction creates an osmotic pressure imbalance on the motor causing it to move. The ratio of the speed of reaction to that of diffusion governs the bath particle distribution which is employed to calculate the driving force on the motor, and from which the self-induced osmotic velocity is determined. For slow reactions, the self-propulsion is proportional to the reaction velocity. When surface reaction dominates over diffusion the osmotic velocity cannot exceed the diffusive speed of the bath particles. Implications of these features for different bath particle volume fractions and motor sizes are discussed. Theoretical predictions are compared with Brownian dynamics simulations.  相似文献

In this Letter, we present a new experimental approach to investigate the effective temperature concept as a generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) for nonequilibrium systems. Simultaneous measurements of diffusion coefficient and sedimentation velocity of heavy colloids, embedded in a Laponite clay suspension, are performed with a fluorescence-recovery-based setup. This nonperturbative dual measurement, performed at a single time in a single sample, allows for a direct application of the FDT to the tracer velocity observable. It thus provides a well-defined derivation of the effective temperature in this ageing colloidal gel. For a wide range of concentrations and ageing times, we report no violation of the FDT, with effective temperature agreeing with bath temperature. This result is consistent with recent theoretical predictions on the coupling between the velocity observable and nonequilibrium gels dynamics.  相似文献

Within a microscopic formalism for the nonequilibrium response of colloidal suspensions driven by an external force, we study the active micro-rheology of a glass-forming colloidal suspensions. In this technique, a probe particle is subject to an external force, and its nonequilibrium dynamics is monitored. Strong external forcing delocalizes the particle from its nearest-neighbor cage, resulting in a pronounced force-thinning behavior of the single-particle friction. We discuss the dynamics in the vicinity of this delocalization transition, and how long-range transport is induced for a particle that is localized in the quiescent case.  相似文献

The concept of effective depletion forces between two fixed big colloidal particles in a bath of small particles is generalized to a nonequilibrium situation where the bath of small Brownian particles is flowing around the big particles with a prescribed velocity. In striking contrast to the equilibrium case, the nonequilibrium forces violate Newton's third law; they are nonconservative and strongly anisotropic, featuring both strong attractive and repulsive domains.  相似文献

Considerations are presented that support the idea that the nonequilibrium phase transition in protein is accompanied by the growth of a colloidal nanocrystal (or the vitrified phase of a liquid crystal). To date, the dynamic transition forms of protein, which are “the source of the catalytic power of enzymes,” have been poorly understood. In our experiments, we observed the dehydration (drying) of the colloid solution of protein in an open (far from thermodynamic equilibrium) one-component protein-water system. The protein in this state is found to acquire properties typical of matter self-organization, including the universal properties of colloidal nanocrystals of different nature, namely, nonequilibrium chaotic dynamics with self-replicability, autocatalysis, coherency, autowave fluctuations, synchronism, fractality, 3D epitaxial growth (stacking) of films, nucleation giving rise to blocks (cells) with shell nuclei, etc. It then follows that our realistic model of the nonequilibrium state of protein during growth of its colloidal nanocrystal provides an opportunity of studying the dynamics of the structural and energy-information features of the transition and solid colloidal nanocrystalline phases of protein. In addition, it allows researchers to gain fundamentally new information about the energy characteristics of protein under abiotic and biotic conditions.  相似文献

In this Letter, the entanglement dynamics of two interacting qubits in a common bath and in two independent baths, at finite and zero temperature are investigated. Entanglement sudden death (ESD) and entanglement sudden birth (ESB) are observed when the two qubits are embedded in two independent baths at finite temperature. At zero temperature, the entanglement of the two qubits may evolve to a steady state with non-zero value when the two qubits are embedded in a common bath, the entanglement sudden birth does not occur when the qubits are embedded in two independent baths.  相似文献

We discuss the problem of heat conduction in quantum spin chain models. To investigate this problem it is necessary to consider the finite open system connected to heat baths. We describe two different procedures to couple the system with the reservoirs: a model of stochastic heat baths and the quantum trajectories solution of the quantum master equation. The stochastic heat bath procedure operates on the pure wave function of the isolated system, so that it is locally and periodically collapsed to a quantum state consistent with a boundary nonequilibrium state. In contrast, the quantum trajectories procedure evaluates ensemble averages in terms of the reduced density matrix operator of the system. We apply these procedures to different models of quantum spin chains and numerically show their applicability to study the heat flow.  相似文献

We study the thermal fluctuations of an optically confined probe particle, suspended in an aging colloidal suspension, as the suspension transforms from a viscous liquid into an elastic glass. The micron-sized bead forms a harmonic oscillator. By monitoring the equal-time fluctuations of the tracer, at two different laser powers we determine the temperature of the oscillator, T(o). In the ergodic liquid the temperatures of the oscillator and its environment are equal, while in contrast, in a nonequilibrium glassy phase we find that T(o) substantially exceeds the bath temperature.  相似文献

We measure the energy fluctuations of a Brownian particle confined by an optical trap in an aging gelatin after a very fast quench (less than 1 ms). The strong nonequilibrium fluctuations due to the assemblage of the gel are interpreted, within the framework of fluctuation theorem, as a heat flux from the particle towards the bath. We derive an analytical expression of the heat probability distribution, which fits the experimental data and satisfies a fluctuation relation similar to that of a system in contact with two baths at different temperatures.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity of nanoparticles colloidal suspensions, submitted to the action of an external force field has been calculated by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. For driven forces in the radio frequency and microwave ranges, we show that the thermal conductivity of nanofluids can be strongly enhanced without cluster formation.  相似文献

We study the nonequilibrium steady state realized in a general stochastic system attached to multiple heat baths. Starting from the detailed fluctuation theorem, we derive concise and suggestive expressions for the corresponding stationary distribution which are correct up to the second order in thermodynamic forces. The probability of a microstate eta is proportional to exp[Phi(eta)] where Phi(eta)=-[under summation operator]kbeta_{k}E_{k}(eta) is the excess entropy change. Here, E_{k}(eta) is the difference between two kinds of conditioned path ensemble averages of excess heat transfer from the kth heat bath whose inverse temperature is beta_{k}. This result can be easily extended to steady states maintained with other sources, e.g., particle current driven by an external force. Our expression may be verified experimentally in nonequilibrium states realized, for example, in mesoscopic systems.  相似文献

Recently, in their attempt to construct steady state thermodynamics (SST), Komatsu, Nakagawa, Sasa, and Tasaki found an extension of the Clausius relation to nonequilibrium steady states in classical stochastic processes. Here we derive a quantum mechanical version of the extended Clausius relation. We consider a small system of interest attached to large systems which play the role of heat baths. By only using the genuine quantum dynamics, we realize a heat conducting nonequilibrium steady state in the small system. We study the response of the steady state when the parameters of the system are changed abruptly, and show that the extended Clausius relation, in which “heat” is replaced by the “excess heat”, is valid when the temperature difference is small. Moreover we show that the entropy that appears in the relation is similar to von Neumann entropy but has an extra symmetrization with respect to time-reversal. We believe that the present work opens a new possibility in the study of nonequilibrium phenomena in quantum systems, and also confirms the robustness of the approach by Komatsu et al.  相似文献

We present a general analytic method for understanding how specific motions of a classical bath influence the dynamics of quantum-mechanical observables in mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics simulations. We apply our method and develop expressions for the special case of quantum solvation, allowing us to examine how specific classical solvent motions couple to the equilibrium energy fluctuations and nonequilibrium energy relaxation of a quantum-mechanical solute. As a first application of our formalism, we investigate the motions of classical water underlying the equilibrium and nonequilibrium excited-state solvent response functions of the hydrated electron; the results allow us to explain why the linear response approximation fails for this system.  相似文献

Quantum thermalization and thermal entanglement in the open quantum Rabi model (QRM), in which a two-level system and a single-mode bosonic field are coupled to either two individual heat baths or a common heat bath, are studied. By treating the QRM as an effective multilevel system and deriving global quantum master equations in the eigenstate representation of the QRM, the physical conditions for quantum thermalization of the QRM is studied. It is found that, in the individual heat-bath case, the QRM can only be thermalized when either the two heat baths have the same temperature or the QRM is only coupled to one of the two baths. In the common heat-bath case, differently, the QRM can always be thermalized. Thermal entanglement of the QRM in both the resonant- and non-resonant coupling cases is also studied. The logarithmic negativity for the thermal state of the QRM is obtained in a wide parameter space, ranging from the low- to high-temperature limits, and from the weak- to deep-strong-coupling regimes. This work paves the way toward the study of quantum effects in nonequilibrium ultrastrongly-coupled light-matter systems.  相似文献

With the help of recent results in the mathematical theory of master equations, we present a rigorous derivation of the stochastic Glauber dynamics of Ising models from Hamiltonian quantum mechanics. A thermal bath is explicitly constructed and, as an illustration, the dynamics of the Ising-Weiss model is analyzed in the thermodynamic limit. We thus obtain an example of a nonequilibrium statistical mechanical system for which a link without mathematical gap can be established from microscopic quantum mechanics to a macroscopic irreversible thermodynamic process.  相似文献

We present the reduced dynamics of a bead in a Rouse chain which is submerged in a bath containing a driving agent that renders it out-of-equilibrium. We first review the generalized Langevin equation of the middle bead in an equilibrated bath. Thereafter, we introduce two driving forces. Firstly, we add a constant force that is applied to the first bead of the chain. We investigate how the generalized Langevin equation changes due to this perturbation for which the system evolves towards a steady state after some time. Secondly, we consider the case of stochastic active forces which will drive the system to a nonequilibrium state. Including these active forces results in an extra contribution to the second fluctuation–dissipation relation. The form of this active contribution is analysed for the specific case of Gaussian, exponentially correlated active forces. We also discuss the resulting rich dynamics of the middle bead in which various regimes of normal diffusion, subdiffusion and superdiffusion can be present.  相似文献

Thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis respectively refer to the directed drift of suspended particles in solutions with external thermal and chemical gradients, which have been widely used in the manipulation of mesoscopic particles. We here study a phoretic-like motion of a passive colloidal particle immersed in inhomogeneous active baths, where the thermal and chemical gradients are replaced separately by activity and concentration gradients of the active particles. By performing simulations, we show that the passive colloidal particle experiences phoretic-like forces that originate from its interactions with the inhomogeneous active fluid, and thus drifts along the gradient field, leading to an accumulation. The results are similar to the traditional phoretic effects occurring in passive colloidal suspensions, implying that the concepts of thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis could be generalized into active baths.  相似文献
