A new project was initiated at PSI to replace the existing μE4 decay channel with a new beam line delivering surface/cloud beams of highest luminosities. This goal will be accomplished by installing a solenoidal lens system at the main production target E and then transporting the muons with conventional beamline elements of very big apertures to a greatly enlarged experimental floor. Several slit systems and an electrostatic separator will be available to control the beam shape and reduce the electrons and other background. Particle fluxes up to 5 × 108 μ+/s and 107 μ/s can be expected at 28 MeV/c beam momentum, using the 600 MeV primary proton beam of 1.7 mA. The operation of the channel will be limited to a maximum momentum of 40 MeV/c. The beam line has been specially designed to provide highest flux to the ultra-slow μ+ beam (LEM). A systematic study on muon catalyzed fusion (μCF) was conducted in solid deuterium and tritium (D–T) mixture. A variety of experimental conditions were investigated, i.e., tritium concentrations from 20 to 70%, temperatures from 5 to 16 K. A preliminary analysis result suggests a steep decrease in the dtμ-molecule formation rate with decreasing temperature, and also an increase in the probability for a muon reactivation after an α-sticking phenomenon. The crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of La(Fell.4Alz.6)C0.02 are studied by magnetic measurernent and powder neutron diffraction with temperature and applied magnetic field. Rietveld refinement shows that La(Fe11.4Al1.6)C0.02 crystallizes into the cubic NaZn13-type with two different Fe sites: FeI (8b) and FeII (96i), and that A1 atoms preferentially occupy the FeII site. A ferromagnetic state can he induced at a medial temperature of 39 K-139 K by an external magnetic field of 0.7 T, and a large lattice is correspondingly found at 100 K and 0.7 T. In all other conditions, La(Fe11.4Al1.6)C0.02 has no net magnetization in the paramagnetic (T 〉 TN = 182 K) or antifer- romagnetic states, and thus keeps its small lattice. Analysis of the Fe Fe bond length indicates that the ferromagnetic state prefers longer Fe-Fe distances.  相似文献

I set forth and discuss I.I. Rabis views on the nature of science and society, focusing specifically on Rabis views on science and government, science and education, and science and religion. I also explore the influence of Rabi and C.P. Snow on each other. In the 1960s, Rabi set forth his mature and boldest positions, advocating science as the center of education and science as the replacement for religion. His positions culminate in science as the universal culture. I highlight Rabi not only as a scientist and public servant, but also as a public intellectual actively engaged with and connected to major issues of his time.Michael A. Those who have worked in the Royal Institution of Great Britain have, since its foundation in 1799, made significant contributions to scientific knowledge, to its practical application, and to its communication to a wide variety of audiences. Such work cannot be carried out in an architectural vacuum, and in this paper we examine how the buildings of the Royal Institution, 20 and 21 Albemarle Street in central London, have shaped the work undertaken within its walls and how, on a number of occasions, the buildings have been reconfigured to take account of the evolving needs of scientific research and communication. This paper is based on the Conservation Plan of the Royal Institution that we wrote during 2003. The Conservation Plan did not examine the land owned by the Royal Institution to the north (i.e., 22 and 23 Albemarle Street; for this area see Richard Garnier, “Grafton Street, Mayfair,” Georgian Group Journal 13 (2003), 210–272), but it did discuss 18 and 19 Albemarle Street. In this paper we concentrate on the core Royal Institution buildings at 20 and 21 Albemarle Street. The influence of the position of the double bond on the autoignition of linear alkenes has been investigated by modeling the behavior of the three isomers of linear hexene and those of linear heptene. Low-temperature kinetic mechanisms for the oxidation of these six alkenes have been obtained after some improvements made to the system EXGAS, for the automatic generation of mechanisms, which had been previously adapted to model the oxidation of 1-pentene and 1-hexene. Quantum mechanical calculations have shown that cis-trans conformations should be taken into account and that isomerizations of alkenyl and alkenyl peroxy radicals involving a transition state including a double bond could be neglected. The new mechanisms have been validated using experimental data obtained in two rapid compression machines between 600 and 900 K with a good prediction of cool flame and ignition delay times. The model reproduces well the decreasing reactivity at low temperature when going from 1- to 3-alkene. While the profiles of products are well reproduced for 1-hexene in a jet-stirred reactor above 780 K, more problems are encountered for the prediction of products in a rapid compression machine at 707 K, showing persisting problems in the understanding of the chemistry of the low-temperature oxidation of alkenes. Reaction rates analysis have been used to explain the difference of reactivity between the isomers of hexene.  相似文献

We measured the neutron beam polarization of the BL05/NOP (Neutron Optics and Physics) beamline at J-PARC with an accuracy of less than 10−3 using polarized 3He gas as a neutron spin analyzer. Precise polarimetry of the neutron beam is necessary to understand the beamline optics as well as for the asymmetry measurements of the neutron beta decay, which are planned in this beamline.  相似文献

A prominent central peak in the sub‐THz frequency range was observed in the Raman spectra of BaTiO3/(Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BT/BST) superlattice grown on (001)MgO substrate. Both soft and central mode show an anomaly around 200 K and 280 K, which can be correlated with orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition of BST and BT, respectively. The observed temperature dependence of the central mode enabled us to explain rather broad temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity previously observed in BT/BST superlattices. Random tensor models for a generic complex tensor generalize matrix models in arbitrary dimensions and yield a theory of random geometries. They support a 1/N1/N expansion dominated by graphs of spherical topology. Their Schwinger Dyson equations, generalizing the loop equations of matrix models, translate into constraints satisfied by the partition function. The constraints have been shown, in the large N limit, to close a Lie algebra indexed by colored rooted D  -ary trees yielding a first generalization of the Virasoro algebra in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper we complete the Schwinger Dyson equations and the associated algebra at all orders in 1/N1/N. The full algebra of constraints is indexed by D-colored graphs, and the leading order D-ary tree algebra is a Lie subalgebra of the full constraints algebra.  相似文献

A systematic procedure is given for obtaining the asymptotic late-time behavior of the Becker-Döring equations describing the time evolution of a population of clusters of particles. In lowest order of approximation, the distribution of the sizes of the largest clusters satisfies the equations of the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory of coarsening.  相似文献

At zero temperature and density, the nature of the chiral phase transition in QED3 with NfNf massless fermion flavors is investigated. To this end, in Landau gauge, we numerically solve the coupled Dyson–Schwinger equations for the fermion and boson propagator within the bare and simplified Ball–Chiu vertices separately. It is found that, in the bare vertex approximation, the system undergoes a high-order continuous phase transition from the Nambu–Goldstone phase into the Wigner phase when the number of fermion flavors NfNf reaches the critical number Nf,cNf,c, while the system exhibits a typical characteristic of second-order phase transition for the simplified Ball–Chiu vertex.  相似文献

The symmetry change occurring at the first-order I-II transition at 267 K in dicalcium barium propionate, DBP, has been determined using X-ray diffraction: phase II is orthorhombic, with probable space group Pnma or Pn21a. The twinning in phase II is explained and lattice parameters calculated in the temperature range 125 K to 300 K. The behaviour of the spontaneous strain in phase II is compared with that in the similar compound dicalcium barium acrylate.  相似文献

Optical properties of have been studied via infrared spectroscopy. For x>0.3, a hump in the optical conductivity σ1 is observed at about 0.2 eV, resulting from strong hybridization between conduction electrons and Ce 4-f electronic states. For x0.3, in contrast, no such hump is observed. The low frequency plasmon indicating the existence of heavy particles is also observed below coherence temperature T* for x>0.3.  相似文献

Magneto-optical experiments are reported which demonstrate the influence of the structural phase transition in Pb1–xGexTe (x<0.012) on the band structure. Cyclotron resonance has been observed both above and below Tc. Above Tc the band structure is similar to that of PbTe with four equivalent valleys at the L-point in both conduction and valence bands. At Tc a rhombohedral phase transition occurs and the valleys are split into a singly degenerate (T) valley and three equivalent (L) valleys. The effective masses and relative band-edge energies for the different types of valley are deduced.  相似文献

The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique is used to study the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (nearest-neighbor) repulsive interaction U (V) and nearest-neighbor hopping t. We calculate the static spin structure factor to consider the spin degrees of freedom. We notice a striking difference of the static spin structure factor among the spin-density-wave, charge-density-wave (CDW), and bond-order-wave (BOW) phases. Based on the results, we identify the BOW-CDW transition at small (large) U value as continuous (of first order). We also calculate the double occupancy to consider the charge degrees of freedom. For large U, the double occupancy show a discontinuous jump at the BOW-CDW critical point and it implies first-order transition. With decreasing U, the jump becomes smaller and vanishes at the tricritical point Ut≈5.961t. This value is close to our previous estimation Ut=5.89t obtained with other quantities. Consequently, the results of static spin structure factor and double occupancy support the accuracy of our ground-state phase diagram.  相似文献

The KPII equation is an integrable nonlinear PDE in 2+1 dimensions (two spatial and one temporal), which arises in several physical circumstances, including fluid mechanics, where it describes waves in shallow water. It provides a multidimensional generalisation of the renowned KdV equation. In this work, we employ a novel approach recently introduced by one of the authors in connection with the Davey-Stewartson equation (Fokas (2009) [13]), in order to analyse the initial-boundary value problem for the KPII equation formulated on the half-plane. The analysis makes crucial use of the so-called d-bar formalism, as well as of the so-called global relation. A novel feature of boundary as opposed to initial value problems in 2+1 is that the d-bar formalism now involves a function in the complex plane which is discontinuous across the real axis.  相似文献

Four previously known rotational bands in 76Rb have been extended to moderate spins using the Gammasphere and Microball γ ray and charged particle detector arrays and the 40Ca(40Ca, 3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV. The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model calculations if they have the same configuration in terms of the number of g9/2 particles, but they result from different nuclear shapes (one near-oblate and the other near-prolate). These data appear to constitute a unique example of shape coexisting structures at medium spins.  相似文献

The magnetoresistance (MR) effect is theoretically investigated in a periodic magnetically modulated nanostructure, which can be realized experimentally by depositing periodic parallel ferromagnetic strips on the top of a heterostructure. We find that there exists a significant conductance difference for electrons through the parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) magnetization configurations, which results in a considerable magnetoresistance effect. We also find that the magnetoresistance effect depends not only on the temperature but also on the number of the periodic magnetic barriers.  相似文献
