Twisted homogeneously planar-aligned nematic liquid-crystal cells are cooled into the smectic- A phase. The expected defective structure does not form. Instead the cells still show good optical-guiding characteristics. Exploration of the cells using a half-leaky guided-mode arrangement reveals that the liquid-crystal phase separates into three or more regions. Adjacent to both the upper and lower boundaries is a region of highly twisted nematic liquid crystal. In the center of the cell is one or more homogeneous smectic- A regions with smectic layers normal to the cell surfaces, separated by twisted nematic. As the cell is cooled so the smectic- A regions grow in thickness with the nematic regions progressively thinning but with increased twist gradient. A theoretical model of these novel results is presented. 相似文献

The orientational relaxation of the director to its equilibrium orientation under electric, elastic, and viscous torques arising in twisted nematic liquid-crystal cells is investigated. It is shown that the relaxation time of the director depends strongly on the external electric field strength and weakly on the energy of anchoring of liquid-crystal molecules to the surfaces of the cell. The relaxation time of the director anomalously increases in electric fields close to the Fréedericksz threshold. It is established that, at specific strengths of the external electric field, the relaxation can occur in the form of traveling waves propagating from one edge to the other edge of the twisted nematic liquid-crystal cell. The calculations of the relaxation processes in the vicinity of the nematic-smectic A phase transition temperature demonstrate that the distortion of the director field is uniform over the entire cross section of the liquid-crystal cell and does not depend on the strength of anchoring of the liquid-crystal molecules to the surfaces of the cell. 相似文献

An optical convergent-beam guided-wave technique is used to explore in detail the dynamic flow effects in a twisted nematic cell. During switch-on it is found that the dynamic flow compresses the director twist to regions close to the cell walls. For high fields this twist compression takes the cell far beyond the Mauguin limit and it no longer effectively guides the polarization of the light through the cell. This results in a very fast switch to a transient dark state. 相似文献

In a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell we report and study the self-transparency effect induced by the creation of an isotropic droplet. A simple theoretical model is presented and good agreement with experimental data is found. In a two beams configuration transistor-like behavior is observed and theoretically discussed. 相似文献

The pretilt angle of a twisted nematic(TN) liquid crystal display has a strong effect on viewing angles and response times of the display as well as shifting the light-leaking disclination lines into the black-matrix area within pixels of a thin-film-transistor driven TN panel for a high contrast ratio. In this Letter, we develop an optical method to determine the TN pretilt angle based on heterodyne measurements of the phase versus the incident angle of a thin TN cell subjected to out-of-plane rotations. We believe that our method of measuring phases has advantages of simpler setup and calculations, better stability, and less sensitive to ambient electromagnetic interference than the commonly used method of measuring intensities. 相似文献

Electric fields of low and high frequency were applied successively to a twisted nematic layer consisting of a material with a dielectric anisotropy whose sign depends on the frequency. Six different areas have been observed which are found to have twist angles of ±π/2, ±3π/2 and ±5π/2. The formation process of these regions is described in some detail. 相似文献

The influence of the surface-induced smectic A (SmA) phase on the threshold field, for homeotropic alignment of polar liquid crystals is discussed from the energy point of view. It is shown that the Freedericksz critical field, for 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB), in a very thin cell near the second-order nematic-SmA phase transition, exhibits an anomalous increase with decreasing of temperature. 相似文献

The dielectric properties of an yttrium-based paramagnetic thermotropic nematic liquid-crystal complex have been studied. The conditions for the measurement of the magnitude and sign of the dielectric anisotropy of the mesophase have been determined. The relaxation of the components of the relative permittivity of a macroscopically homogeneously oriented sample has been observed. The linearized Ericksen-Leslie differential equations, which couple fluid motion and director reorientation to each other, are reduced to a set of time varying differential equations for two pulsed optical waves incident at an angle upon a homeotropically orientated liquid-crystal cell. The differential equations are solved by a numerical method. The fluid velocity and the director angle are plotted as a function of space and time. It is shown that the reaction of fluid motion upon director reorientation is small. 相似文献

Optical guided mode observations of the transient director profile (optical tensor distribution) during the relaxation of a 90 degrees twisted nematic cell directly reveals backflow. In the first 6 ms of the relaxation process, after a voltage across the cell is removed, the midplane tilt of the director increases, reaching a maximum value of 101 degrees at 1.4 ms. This increase in midplane tilt is attributed to coupling between fluid flow (backflow) and director reorientation. A 270 degrees twisted state of the opposite handedness to the 90 degrees twisted state found at equilibrium is shown to exist during the backflow period. Good fits of theoretical models with experimentally determined time dependent director profiles yield the viscosity coefficients. 相似文献

In a twisted nematic layer oppositely twisted regions can exist, separated by a disclination line, as demonstrated by the orientation of Williams domains. The disclination line can move under the influence of a magnetic field. We show that many of the complicated static and dynamic optical transmission characteristics of a Schadt-Helfrich twist cell, including the “bounce” in transmission that is observed at negative oblique angles of incidence after switching it off, can be predicted quite well from a very simple dynamic model. The model ignores flow and has only a viscous resistance to angular reorientation, in addition to the Ossen-Frank elastic properties. The bounce observed in some cases with normally incident light cannot be predicted by the model. As expected, the model yields equilibrium configurations at any applied voltage that give the observed transmission very accurately. Dynamic observations in the upper part of the nematic temperature range, where the observed bounce at normal incidence is small, are well reproduced by the model. At lower temperatures the discrepancies are larger. When interpreted with the model, both dynamic and static measurements concur in indicating that the directors of the liquid crystal adjacent to the surfaces assumed a more or less permanent tilt of a few degrees in our cell. We report the diffraction properties at wavelengths of 632.8 and 1550 nm for volume transmission gratings made of a sequence of continuously aligned nematic liquid-crystal layers separated by isotropic polymer slices. The gratings are generated by holographically curing a solution of liquid crystal diluted in an isotropic prepolymer by means of a laser beam at a wavelength of 352 nm with a total intensity of approximately 10 mW/cm2. A diffraction efficiency of 98% was measured, and an electric field as low as 5 V/microm switches off the phase grating. Measured angular spectra are fitted by use of the modified coupled-mode theory including the effects of grating birefringence. 相似文献

We present a procedure to obtain the physical parameters responsible of twisted nematic liquid crystal (LC) cells optical modulation. The novelty of our approach is based on the use of spectroscopic measurements of the light transmitted by the system polarizer-LC cell-analyzer, combined with a previously proposed simple physical model of the LC twist and tilt distribution along cell. The procedure involves two steps: the first one yields off-state parameters like the LC director orientation, the twist angle, and the optical path difference (cell gap); the second step yields the effective retardances of the central and edge LC layers. The use of a spectroscopic method provides a full characterization of the LC cell as a function of both the voltage and the wavelength. The complete procedure leads to a very accurate prediction of the transmitted light broadband spectrum, as well as the complex (amplitude and phase) modulation for any wavelength within the calibration range. 相似文献

We analyze the optical effects associated with an adiabatic rotation of a plane of polarization in a twisted nematic liquid crystal. The experimental verification was performed with a cell with linear rubbing of a front surface and circular rubbing of a rear surface. The expectations of the liquid crystal's orientation defect origin along the line of the maximum tension and a polarization conflict caused by geometrical phase are confirmed. 相似文献
