A study has been made of the strength of adhesion of epoxy polymer to fibers of various chemical natures, and it has been shown that the magnitude of the adhesion depends not only on the nature of the fiber but also on its surface geometry. The effect of the supermolecular structure on the internal stresses and adhesion of coatings obtained from solutions of atactic polystyrene has been investigated. The structure of the coatings depends on the nature of the solvent and is nonuniform with respect to the morphology, size, distribution, and state of order of the structural elements. The variation of the axial and radial components of the residual stresses in fiber-reinforced polyethylene with distance from the fiber has been investigated. It is shown that, irrespective of the agent employed, coupling leads to an increase in stresses. The values obtained for the residual stresses are compared with the adhesion strength determined by the shearing method. The temperature stresses in polyethylene composites with fibrous fillers have been estimated. It is shown that they do not represent a threat to the adhesion bond or the cohesion strength of the components of the systems investigated. Model experiments have revealed the presence of an adhesion interaction between the filler and the matrix in the composite itself and have made it possible to estimate the actual threat posed by the temperature stresses. In polymer materials phase transition of the system from the liquid to the solid state is associated with internal stresses which act counter to the forces of molecular cohesion and thus reduce the cohesive strength. The strength properties of and internal stresses in epoxy and epoxyphenol resins and GRPs based on them are investigated using an optical method of determining internal stresses. The GRPs had tape and fabric reinforcement. Compared with the internal stresses in unplasticized specimens, the stresses in pure resin films and in GRPs based on plasticized resins are found to be smaller. It is shown that the distribution of internal stresses in GRPs is anisotropic. The highest internal stresses are observed in tape-reinforced GRPs in a direction normal to the fibers. Glass reinforcement in two directions at right angles reduces the internal stresses in GRPs as compared with pure resin films. A finite element model is presented for analyzing the strength and stability of sandwich shells of arbitrary configuration with an adhesion failure zone between the core and one of the facings. The model is based on the assumptions that both facings are laminated Timoshenko-type composite shells, only transverse shear stresses in the core and normal stresses in the thickness direction have nonzero values, a free slip in the tangential plane in the adhesion failure zone and unilateral contact along the normal are possible, and the prebuckling state in the stability problem is linear. Biquadratic nine-node approximations for all functions and numerical integration were used. The displacements and rotation angles of the normals toward the facings as well as stresses in the core are taken as global degrees of freedom. The algebraic problem is solved using a special step-by-step procedure of determining the contact area in the scaling zone and employing unilateral constraints for some of the unknowns. The effect of structure formation on the mechanical properties of amorphous paint films has been investigated. It is shown that the organization of the supermolecular formations affects the internal stresses and adhesion of the film and, moreover, their tensile and impact strengths over a broad temperature interval. A previous investigation [4] of the tear strength of filled systems based on SKS-85 butadiene-styrene copolymer over a broad temperature interval revealed a reversal of the reinforcing effect of fillers with a coefficient of thermal expansion different from that of the filled polymer. At Tg the strength of mixtures containing polymer fillers [Kapron (polycaprolactam) and cellophane powder] exceeds that of mixtures containing chalk and carbon black. The temperature reversal effect is attributed to the severe weakening of the adhesion of the polymer to the surface of the filler particles as a result of the concentration of shrinkage stresses in the polymer-filler contact zone. The presence of shrinkage stresses around the filler particles at Tg is qualitatively demonstrated on model systems using a photoelastic technique. Moreover, it is shown that the unbalance, and hence the residual stresses, in filled systems at temperatures below the glass transition temperature of the filled polymer is determined by the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion.Moscow Technological Institute of the Meat and Dairy Industry. We propose a mathematical model for describing diffusion processes in piecewise homogeneous bodies, in particular in structural elements with coverings taking account of corrosion in the space of the bodies in contact and at the interface. On the basis of the principle of ellipsometry and, moreover, the method of pyrolitic decomposition of the polymer with subsequent chromatographic analysis of the products of pyrolysis, a procedure has been developed for experimentally determining the thickness of the ultrathin layer of polymer that remains on the metal after failure of a polyethylene-steel adhesion bond. The nature of the relationship between the thickness of the residual polymer layer (200–800 Å) and the strength of the adhesion bond is established. It is concluded that the cohesion strength and the deformation at failure of the layer of adhesive next to the more rigid and stronger boundary layer have a decisive influence on the strength of the adhesion bond.Riga Polytechnic Institute. The temperature — time dependence of the adhesion strength has been studied for polymer systems differing in the thermodynamic compatibility of the substrate and adhesive and in the rate of polymerization of the latter. The fracture-activation energies of these systems have been calculated. The effect of a filler on the strength properties of polymers in tension is investigated. The thermostructural stresses that develop in the composite during cure are taken into account. Relations are given for the strength of the filled polymer as a function of the percentage filler content. In the process of analyzing the thermostructural stresses an analytic expression is obtained for the linear expansion coefficient of the composite with allowance for the structural distribution of the components. Calculated values of the strength and thermostructural stresses are presented for composites with different filler contents. Possibilities of controlling the internal stresses developing during production of glass reinforced plastics were investigated. A favorable effect can be obtained by prestressing the glass fiber reinforcement during molding. Prestressing during heat treatment was found to increase the strength of the fibers. The problem on calculating the failure time of thin-walled polymer tubes in creep under internal pressure, internal pressure with tension, pure torsion, and torsion with tension is solved. The solution is constructed based on the concept of equivalent stresses. A mixed long-term failure criterion taking into account the sings of principal stresses is used as the equivalent stress.
