The surface chemistry of plasma treated polystyrene samples has been studied in a specially designed low-pressure argon discharge system incorporating in situ XPS analysis. By using an electrostatic grid biasing technique, the plasma source can also be used in a mode preventing ion interactions with the sample. The system, which utilizes a vacuum transfer chamber between plasma and XPS analysis has allowed us to differentiate between the level of oxygen incorporated at the polystyrene surface from residual gas during treatment and that from the exposure of the treated sample to the laboratory atmosphere. Using typical base pressures of about 5 × 10−3 Pa (4 × 10−5 Torr) the XPS results show that significant oxygen surface incorporation resulted from oxygen containing species in the plasma itself (i.e. water vapour with 2 × 10−3 Pa partial pressure). The surface concentration of O was measured at 7.6 at.%. Subsequent atmospheric exposure of the treated samples resulted in only a small increase (of 0.6 at.%) in oxygen incorporation in the form of acid anhydride functionalities.XPS measurements of PS samples exposed to plasmas with no ion-surface component (i.e. exposure from VUV, UV and excited neutral species only) showed no appreciable change in oxygen incorporation compared to those with low-energy ion bombardment from the plasma (<20 eV). Given the energetics of the remaining bombarding species, it indicates that VUV radiation may be chiefly responsible for the production of free radical sites in this discharge regime.  相似文献

The reaction of formic acid on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The hydroxyl and carbonyl O 1s core levels of chemisorbed formic acid display chemical shifts of 2.4 and 0.2 eV respectively, compared with those of physisorbed molecules. The HREELS spectra of chemisorbed formic acid show the absence of stretching and bending modes of the O-H bond, the appearance of Si-H (2089 cm−1) and the Si-O (680 cm−1) stretching modes and the retained stretching mode of CO at 1703 cm−1. Our results clearly suggest that formic acid dissociates to form monodentate formate species and H-atom on the adatom-rest atom pair of Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7.  相似文献

Surface flashover phenomena under high electric field are closely related to the surface characteristics of a solid insulating material between energized electrodes. Based on measuring the surface potential decaying curve of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) block charged by a needle-plane corona discharge, its surface trapping parameters are calculated with the isothermal current theory, and the correlative curve between the surface trap density and its energy level is obtained. The maximum density of electron traps and hole traps in the surface layer of PTFE presents a similar value of ∼2.7 × 1017 eV−1 m−3, and the energy level of its electron and hole traps is of about 0.85-1.0 eV and 0.80-0.90 eV, respectively. Via the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique, the F, C, K and O elements are detected on the surface of PTFE samples, and F shows a remarkable atom proportion of ∼73.3%, quite different from the intrinsic distribution corresponding to its chemical formula. The electron traps are attributed to quantities of F atoms existing on the surface of PTFE due to its molecular chain with C atoms surrounded by F atoms spirally. It is considered that the distortions of chemical and electronic structure on solid surface are responsible for the flashover phenomena occurring at a low applied voltage.  相似文献

In this study the erosion of poly(vinyl fluoride) Tedlar by hyperthermal atomic oxygen (AO) has been examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Initially the Tedlar film had F/C and O/C atom ratios of 0.45 and 0.11, which decrease to 0.018 and 0.04, respectively, after a 2-h exposure to a flux of 2 × 1015 atoms/cm2 s AO with an average kinetic energy of 5 eV. This exposure essentially produced a graphitic or amorphous carbon-like layer with a carbon content greater than 90 at.%. Longer AO exposures do not alter the composition of this layer significantly. Exposure to O2 or air nearly doubles the oxygen content in the near-surface region. This is due to dissociative oxygen adsorption at reactive sites formed at the polymer surface during AO exposure. Further exposure to AO removes this chemisorbed oxygen.  相似文献

In this work we show the adsorption of acetonitrile (CH3CN) and acrylonitrile (CH2CHCN) on Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 at room temperature by increasing the molecular doses. Especially, by means of XPS and LEED data, we stress the action of these molecules on the silicon surface locating the dangling-bonds quasi-saturation within 10 L. The shortage of nitrogen XPS signal and some anomalies in carbon spectra point to an invading action from a traditional X-ray source (Al-Kα line) against chemisorbed molecules. In particular, we think that a long exposure to this radiation could break carbon-silicon bonds changing some adsorption geometries and making desorb molecular fragments.  相似文献

The aim of the Solar Probe Plus (SP+) mission is to understand how the solar corona is heated and how the solar wind is accelerated. To achieve these goals, in situ measurements are necessary and the spacecraft has to approach the Sun as close as 9.5 solar radii. This trajectory induces extreme environmental conditions such as high temperatures and intense Vacuum Ultraviolet radiation (VUV). To protect the measurement and communication instruments, a heat shield constituted of a carbon material is placed on the top of the probe. In this study, the physical and chemical behavior of carbon materials is experimentally investigated under high temperatures (1600-2100 K), high vacuum (10−4 Pa) and VUV radiation in conditions near those at perihelion for SP+. Thanks to several in situ and ex situ characterizations, it was found that VUV radiation induced modification of outgassing and of mass loss rate together with alteration of microstructure and morphology.  相似文献

Surfaces of mineral cuprite prepared by fracture under UHV have been characterised by synchrotron XPS and near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy before and after exposure to ambient air. Before exposure of the cuprite, the Cu 2p photoelectron and Cu L2,3-edge absorption spectra were consistent with CuI with very little d9 character. Surface-enhanced O 1s spectra from the unexposed mineral revealed a surface species, with binding energy 0.95 ± 0.05 eV below the principal cuprous oxide peak, assigned to under-coordinated oxygen. A second surface species, with binding energy about 1 eV higher than the principal peak, was assigned to either hydroxyl derived from chemisorbed water vapour or surface oxygen dimers produced by restructuring of the cuprite fracture surface. The width of the principal O 1s peak was 0.66 ± 0.02 eV. The observed Cu L3- and O K-edge absorption spectra were in good agreement with those simulated for the cuprite structure. After exposure of the fracture surface to ambient air, the low binding energy O 1s surface species was barely discernible, the original high binding energy O 1s surface species remained of comparable intensity, new intensity appeared at an even higher (∼1.9 eV) binding energy, and the Cu L2,3-edge spectrum indicated the presence of CuII, consistent with the formation of a thin surface layer of Cu(OH)2.  相似文献

The adsorption of oxygen atoms on Mg3Nd (0 0 1) surface was studied based on density function theory (DFT), in which the exchange-correlation potential was chosen as the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in the Perdew and Wang (PW91). The most preferred adsorption position was at the top-hollow site. Upon the optimization on top-hollow site with different coverage, it was found that the adsorption energy decreased with oxygen coverage. The density of states analysis showed that obvious charge transfer took place between O atom and the nearest Nd atom and chemical bond formed between O atom and the nearest Nd atom after O adsorption. The result of surface energy as a function of chemical potential change of oxygen indicated the clean Mg3Nd (0 0 1) surface was easy to adsorb oxygen and form 1.00 ML surface.  相似文献

The adsorption of l-cysteine and l-methionine amino acids on a chiral Cu{5 3 1} surface was investigated with high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and carbon K-edge near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) Spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. XPS shows that at 300 K l-cysteine adsorbs through two oxygen, a nitrogen and a sulfur atom, in a four point ‘quadrangular footprint’, whereas l-methionine adsorbs through only two oxygen and a nitrogen atom in a ‘triangular footprint’. NEXAFS was used to clarify the adsorption geometry of both molecules, which suggests a binding orientation to the top layer and second layer atoms in two different orientations associated with adsorption sites on {1 1 0} and {3 1 1} microfacets of the Cu{5 3 1} surface.  相似文献

The surface of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE or Teflon) was treated by nitrogen plasma-based ion implantation. Accelerating voltages between 15 and 30 kV, fluences between 1 × 1017 and 3 × 1017 cm−2 and fluence rates between 3 × 1013 and 7 × 1013 cm−2 s−1 were applied. The effects of these main parameters were examined on the evolution of surface chemical composition, mean roughness, abrasive wear, wettability and surface electrical resistance. The aim was to obtain relationships, enabling to control the surface properties examined. The F/C atomic ratio determined by XPS strongly decreased, correlating inversely with voltage. The mean surface roughness characterized by topography measurements, increased, correlating directly with fluence and inversely with voltage. The wear volume obtained by multipass scratch tests did not show clear relationship with the main process parameters, however, it increased upon treatment with the increase of surface roughness and O/C atomic ratio. The water contact angle increased at low voltages and high fluences, due to preferential increase of roughness, and decreased at high voltages and low fluences, owing to intense defluorination and incorporation of N and O. The electrical resistance of the PBII-treated surfaces decreased by several orders of magnitude, showing a significant inverse correlation with fluence. It continued to decrease for samples exposed to air, primarily after treatments performed with low fluences, due to post-treatment type oxidation.  相似文献

A simple, inexpensive and environmental chemical treatment process, i.e., treating porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films by a mixture of potassium permanganate solution and nitric acid, was proposed to improve the hydrophilicity of PTFE. To evaluate the effectiveness of this strong oxidation treatment, contact angle measurement was performed. The effects of treatment time and temperature on the contact angle of PTFE were studied as well. The results showed that the chemical modification decreased contact angle of as-received PTFE film from 133 ± 3° to 30 ± 4° treated at 100 °C for 3 h, effectively converting the hydrophobic PTFE to a hydrophilic PTFE matrix. The changes in chemical structure, surface compositions and crystal structure of PTFE were examined by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. It was found that the F/C atomic ratio decreased from untreated 1.65-0.10 treated by the mixture at 100 °C for 3 h. Hydrophilic groups such as carbonyl (CO) and hydroxyl (OH) were introduced on the surface of PTFE after treatment. Furthermore, hydrophilic compounds K0.27MnO2·0.54H2O was absorbed on the surface of porous PTFE film. Both the introduction of hydrophilic groups and absorption of hydrophilic compounds contribute to the significantly decreased contact angle of PTFE.  相似文献

We directly investigated the chemical compositional origin of surface roughness variations in air-annealed ZnO single crystal samples for annealing temperatures up to 1000 °C. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) showed temperature-dependent changes in surface roughness and morphology, with a maximum in surface roughness of 2 nm found for samples annealed at 400 °C. The O(1s) line, measured by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) showed a maximum for Zn(OH)2 and a minimum for off-stoichiometric ZnO at 400 °C; while the Zn(2p) peaks show an increase in slope at that temperature. These results indicate that the roughness arises from Zn diffusion and loss of surface oxygen.  相似文献

The morphological change of D2O layers on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated on the basis of He atom scattering. With the increase of D2O exposure on Ru(0 0 0 1) at 111 K, the intensity of a specularly reflected He beam continuously decreases up to the exposure of 1.0 L (Langmuir). At the D2O coverage of 1.0 adsorbed layer (∼1.5 L), which is characterized by temperature-programmed desorption measurements, the formation of the (√3 × √3)R30° superstructure as a result of the diffusion of D2O on the surface was confirmed by He atom diffraction. With the further increase of D2O exposure, at 2-3 adsorbed layers, the disordered structure was found to be on the surface at 111 K. The morphological change of the disordered layers was observed during annealing, and discussed in detail.  相似文献

Proof-of-concept reactions were performed on GaN (0 0 0 1) surfaces to demonstrate surface termination with desired chemical groups using an olefin cross-metathesis reaction. To prepare the GaN surfaces for olefin metathesis, the surfaces were hydrogen terminated with hydrogen plasma, chlorine terminated with phosphorous pentachloride, and then terminated with an alkene group via a Grignard reaction. The olefin metathesis reaction then bound 7-bromo-1-heptene. The modified surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurements following each step in the reaction scheme. The XPS data was used to qualitatively identify surface chemical species and to quantitatively determine molecular surface coverage. The bromine atom in 7-bromo-1-heptene served as a heteroatom for identification with XPS. The reaction scheme resulted in GaN substrates with a surface coverage of 0.10 monolayers and excellent stability towards oxidation when exposed to oxygen plasma.  相似文献

The surface of cyclo-olefin polymer (COP) was treated with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light at 172 nm wavelength to improve the wettability and adhesion properties. Through VUV treatment in air, the terminal groups of the COP surface were oxidized into oxygen functional groups, containing CO, CO, and COO components, making the COP surface hydrophilic. The extent of oxygenation was evaluated by XPS and FTIR-ATR spectra, and it was shown that the surface properties, hydrophilicity, and functionalization were dependent on both VUV irradiation distance and irradiation time, which have an effect on the concentration of oxygen functional groups. VUV-light treatment with a short irradiation distance was more effective in introducing oxygen functional groups.  相似文献

Plasma interactions with l-alaine have been studied as a basis of fundamental processes in plasma medicine. The plasma interactions with l-alaine have been examined for investigations of molecular degradations induced by direct exposures with Ar plasma and exposures with UV–VUV photons emitted from the Ar plasma via chemical bonding states analyses using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The direct Ar-plasma exposure resulted in significant degradations of COOH group and CNH2 group. Separate experiments via irradiation with photons in UV and VUV regions from the Ar plasma showed that the molecular degradation via irradiation with photons in VUV region was much more significant than via irradiation with photons in UV region. These experiments have indicated that the causality of the molecular degradation of the l-alanine during the Ar plasma exposure is considered to be significant in the following order; ions > VUV photons > UV photons ~ meta-stable radicals. Furthermore, the exposure with Ar–O2 mixture plasma resulted in insignificant change in the XPS C1s spectra for variation of the exposure time ranging from 30 s to 300 s, indicating that the surface etching process is much more considerable than the chemical degradation process.  相似文献

III-V semiconductor compound structures are widely applied in technology of advanced microelectronics, optoelectronics, and gas sensors. In this paper, we report on the use of XPS to characterize in situ the interaction of thermally activated hydrogen atoms and hydrogen molecules with InP(1 0 0) surfaces covered by thin InN overlayers. XPS spectra were taken with an ESCALAB-210 spectrometer after repeated hydrogenation cycles at temperatures up to 350 °C. The evolution of the In 3d, In 4d, P 2p, N 1s, O 1s and C 1s photoelectron spectra was carefully monitored. The XPS spectra of the hydrogen exposed surface revealed significant differences compared to those from the non-hydrogenated surface. InN films were found to be weakly reactive to hydrogen under experimental conditions explored. The behavior of P atoms at the hydrogenated surface was dependent on the parameters characterizing each hydrogenation (exposure, hydrogen species used, annealing temperature). Moreover, the heavily hydrogenated surface exhibited a phosphorus enrichment.  相似文献

A surface characterization study using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) has been performed on a 5 wt.% Pd/Co3O4 methane oxidation catalyst before and after exposure to a mixture of CH4 and O2 in N2 at 250 °C for a period of 6 days. The primary peaks observed in the XPS survey spectra are the Co 2p, Pd 3d, O 1s and C 1s, along with Co, Pd and O Auger peaks. High-resolution Pd 3d spectra reveal that Pd exists on the surface predominantly as PdO, with no apparent change in chemical state during reaction. High-resolution XPS Co 2p and O 1s spectra reveal an accumulation of CoOOH and a depletion of CoO in the near-surface region during reaction. ISS analysis with intermittent 1-keV Ar+ sputtering was used to obtain depth profiles from the catalyst before and after reaction. The results indicate that the Pd/Co concentration ratio decreases with sputtering and that this ratio is larger for the as-prepared catalyst indicating that morphological changes occur during reaction. The ISS depth profile spectra obtained from the catalyst after reaction indicates the presence of an oxyhydroxide layer throughout the near-surface region. This observation is consistent with the XPS data indicating accumulation of hydroxide and oxyhydroxide species at the surface during reaction.Based on these data and the results of related studies, a reaction mechanism is proposed. In this mechanism, methane dissociatively chemisorbs to form a surface methoxy species and CoOOH. The remaining hydrogen atoms are stripped from the methoxy species leaving an active adsorbed C species which reacts with surface oxygen and a hydroxyl group to form an adsorbed bicarbonate ion which then decomposes to form CO2 and a surface hydroxyl group. These hydroxyl groups also react to form H2O and then more O2 adsorbs dissociatively at the vacant sites.  相似文献

The surface reaction and desorption of sulfur on Rh(1 0 0) induced by O2 and H2O are investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique. The Rh(1 0 0) sample covered with atomic sulfur is prepared by means of the exposure to H2S gas, and subsequently the sample is annealed under O2 or H2O atmosphere. The XPS results show that atomic sulfur adsorbed on Rh(1 0 0) reacts with O2 and desorbs from the surface at 473 K or more. On the other hand, atomic sulfur can not be removed from Rh(1 0 0) surface by H2O at any temperature.  相似文献

Structures of carbon monoxide layers on the oxygen-modified Mo(1 1 0) and Mo(1 1 2) surfaces have been investigated by means of density-functional (DFT) calculations. It is found that CO molecules adsorb at hollow sites on the O/Mo(1 1 0) surface and nearly atop Mo atoms on the O/Mo(1 1 2) surface. The favorable positions for adsorption are shown to be near protrusions of electron density above the Mo surface atoms. The presence of oxygen on the molybdenum surface significantly reduces the binding energy of the CO molecule with the substrate; on the oxygen-saturated Mo(1 1 0) surface, the adsorption of CO is completely blocked. The calculated local densities of states (LDOS) demonstrate that the O 2s peak for O adsorbed on Mo(1 1 0) surface is at −19 eV (with respect to the Fermi level), while for the oxygen atom of an adsorbed CO molecule the related 3σ molecular orbital gives rise to a peak at −23 eV. This difference stems from the bonding of the O atom either with Mo surface for adsorbed O or with C atom in adsorbed CO, and therefore the position of the O 2s peak in photoemission spectra can serve as a convincing argument in favor of either the presence or absence of the CO dissociation on Mo surfaces.  相似文献
