To study the effects of low earth orbit environment on the surface properties of polymers, phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) blocks were irradiated by atomic oxygen in a ground-based simulation system. The surface properties of the pristine and irradiated blocks were studied by attenuated total-reflection FTIR (FTIR-ATR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that atomic oxygen irradiation induced the destruction of PES-C molecular chains, including the scission and oxidation of PES-C molecular chains, as evidenced by FTIR and XPS results. The scission of PES-C molecular chains decreased the relative concentration of C in the surface, while the oxidation increased the relative concentration of O in the surface. The changes in surface chemical structure and composition also changed the surface morphology of the block, which shifted from smooth structure before irradiation to “carpet-like” structure after irradiation.  相似文献

Effects of atomic oxygen (AO) irradiation on the structural and tribological behaviors of polyimide/Al2O3/SiO2 composites were investigated in a ground-based simulation facility, in which the energy of AO was about 5 eV and the flux was 7.2 × 1015 cm?2.s?1. The structural changes were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total-reflection FTIR (FTIR-ATR), while the tribological changes were evaluated by friction and wear tests as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the worn surfaces. It was found that AO irradiation induced the oxidation and degradation of polyimide (PI) molecular chains. The destructive action of AO changed the surface chemical structure, which resulted in changes of the surface morphology and chemical composition of the samples. Friction and wear tests indicated that AO irradiation decreased the friction coefficient but increased the wear rate of both pure and Al2O3/SiO2 filled PIs.  相似文献

Effects of atomic oxygen (AO) irradiation on the structural and tribological behaviors of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites filled with both glass fibers and Al2O3 were investigated in a ground-based simulation facility, in which the average energy of AO was about 5 eV and the flux was 5.0 × 1015/cm2 s. It was found that AO irradiation first induced the degradation of PTFE molecular chains on the sample surface, and then resulted in a change of surface morphology. The addition of Al2O3 filler significantly increased the AO resistance property of PTFE composites. Friction and wear tests indicated that AO irradiation affected the wear rate and increased the friction coefficient of specimens. The PTFE composite containing 10% Al2O3 exhibit the best AO resistance and lower wear rate after long time AO irradiation.  相似文献

To study the structural and tribological properties of MoS2/polyimide (MoS2/PI) composite under the irradiation environment of proton and electron, the MoS2/PI composites were investigated in a ground-based simulation facility, in which the energy of proton and electron was 25 keV and the flux was 2.5 × 1014 cm−2 s−1. The experimental results revealed that the simplex and combined irradiation of proton and electron induced bond break and cross-link, proton irradiation can break the PI bond easier than electron irradiation and then formed the graphite-like structure at surface area of the samples. Irradiation decreased the friction coefficient and wear rate remarkably of the composites comparing with the pristine one. The wear rate increased with the increasing of the proton and combined radiation time, and decreased with the electron radiation conditions.  相似文献

Changes in surface characteristics of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) film induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation were investigated. The surface properties of the pristine and irradiated films were studied by attenuated total-reflection FTIR (FTIR-ATR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that photooxidation degradation took place on the sample surface after irradiation and the oxygen content in the surface increased as evidenced by FTIR-ATR and XPS results. The water contact angle of the irradiated films decreased with increasing irradiation time, which was ascribed to the increased polarity of the surface induced by photooxidation. The etching of ultraviolet irradiation induced the roughening of PES-C surface after irradiation with its root-mean-square roughness (RMS) determined by AFM increased from 2.097 nm before irradiation to 7.403 nm in the area of 25 μm × 25 μm.  相似文献

The dry sliding tribological behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy irradiated by high-intensity pulsed ion beam (HIPIB) at energy density of 3.4 J/cm2 with 10 shots is investigated by dry sliding wear tests in order to explore the effect of HIPIB irradiation on tribological property of magnesium alloy. Surface morphologies, composition and structure of the irradiated AZ31 magnesium alloys are examined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that HIPIB irradiation led to the increase in surface microhardness and the reduction in friction coefficient and wear rate. Wear rate for both the original and the irradiated samples increased with increasing sliding load from 0.1 to 0.5 N. The transition from severe metallic wear to mild oxidative wear induced by HIPIB irradiation was observed by a combined analysis in surface morphology and chemical composition of wear tracks, mechanically mixed materials and wear debris, which is mainly attributed to the significant increase in microhardness resulting from grain refinement on the irradiated surface. In addition, defects induced by HIPIB irradiation promoted the diffusion of oxygen during sliding wear and therefore led to the formation of compact mixed materials and protective films on the wear tracks surface, which also contributes to the transition in wear mechanism of AZ31 magnesium alloy induced by HIPIB irradiation.  相似文献

CrN coatings were prepared by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. The influence of the deposition parameters (nitrogen partial pressure PN2, substrate bias voltage Vs and preheating of the substrate) on the structural, mechanical and tribological properties of the FCVA CrN coatings was investigated. Further, the FCVA CrN coating was compared in dry reciprocating sliding with commercial multi-arc ion plating (MAIP) CrN coating as to friction and wear properties. Profilometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) were used to evaluate the wear scars and the wear mechanisms were discussed. The results showed that the structural, mechanical and tribological properties of the FCVA CrN coatings were significantly dependent on the deposition parameters. The FCVA CrN coating deposited with PN2 of 0.1 Pa, Vs of −100 V and without preheating exhibited the optimal mechanical and tribological properties. The FCVA CrN coating exhibited much better anti-abrasive and anti-spalling properties than the MAIP CrN coating, which was resulted from significant reduction of macroparticles and pitting defects by the FCVA technique. The MAIP CrN coating suffered severe concentrated wear by a combination wear mechanisms of delamination, abrasive and oxidative wear when high normal load was applied, while for the FCVA CrN coating the wear mechanisms were ultra-mild abrasive and oxidative wear.  相似文献

Ag-Cu alloy film was deposited by arc ion plating (AIP). Atomic oxygen (AO) irradiation experiments were conducted using a ground AO simulation facility. The structure, morphology, composition and tribological property of the Ag-Cu alloy film before and after AO irradiation were investigated and compared with Ag film using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) and ball-on-disk tribometer, respectively. In depth XPS analysis clearly shows that the affected thickness of Ag-Cu alloy film was greatly reduced and the oxidation product was mainly Ag2O, but AgO and Ag2O in case of pure Ag film. As a result, the Ag-Cu alloy film exhibited better AO resistant behaviors, and showed a stable friction and low wear after the AO irradiation. The AO resistant behaviors of the Ag-Cu alloy film were discussed in terms of the film microstructure.  相似文献

In this study a series of polyimide (PI) films were synthesized from fluorinated and nonfluorinated monomers which contained diamines and dianhydrides. The influence of fluorine-containing groups on the glass transition temperature (T g) and tribological properties of the PI films was investigated. The wear mechanism for the different kinds of PI polymers was comparatively discussed. T g was characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis and the tribological changes were evaluated by friction and wear tests as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the worn surfaces. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) has been used to study the structures of the PI polymers. Experimental results indicated that the fluorine groups influenced the thermal behavior (T g) of the PI films. Nonfluorinated PI films have lower friction coefficient and wear rate compared with the fluorinated ones. It was also found that the tribological properties of the PI films were closely related with the applied load. The friction coefficients and wear rates reduced with increasing the applied load.  相似文献

We investigated the structure change, surface properties (roughness, porosity, and hardness), tribological, and electrochemical performances of HVOF sprayed Ni-20Cr-10W-9Mo-4Cu-1C-1B-1Fe (Diamalloy-4006) coatings before and after laser irradiation. The results showed that the friction and wear resistance of the coatings were improved significantly with an optimized laser irradiation process. The improvement can be attributed to the improved roughness and hardness, as well as the formation of oxides Cu x O and Cr2O3 tribofilms. With the laser irradiation treatment, the local corrosion of the coating had a decrease and the selective corrosion resistance of the Diamalloy-4006 coating was improved as a result of the decreasing the size and number of the pores, especially compact interface achieved by laser irradiation.  相似文献

Thin films of SiO2 and La2O3 were prepared on a glass substrate by a dip-coating process from specially formulated sols. The tribological properties of the resulting thin films sliding against a Si3N4 ball were evaluated on a one-way reciprocating friction and wear tester. The morphologies of the unworn and worn surfaces of the films were examined by an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). La2O3 shows the best tribological performance. The coefficient of friction is about 0.1 and the wear life is over 5000 sliding passes both under higher (3 N) and lower load (1 N). The SiO2 film derived from a specially formulated aqueous solution shows much better performance in resisting wear and reducing friction than the one derived from an ethanol solution. The wear mechanisms of the films are discussed based on SEM observation of the worn surface morphologies. SEM observation of the morphologies of worn surfaces indicates that the worn surface of La2O3 is too slight to be observed by SEM. The wear of SiO2 derived from TEOS solution is the characteristic of delaminating, which is responsible for the abrupt failure of the film. The wear of SiO2 derived from aqueous solution is the characteristic of fracture. Brittle fracture and severe abrasion dominate the wear of glass substrate.  相似文献

Polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR)-type polyimide was synthesized and the homogeneous matrix resin solution (30–40% solid) was used to prepare film blocks for tribological tests. Compared with a thermoplastic polyimide with similar molecular formula and similar behavior of weight loss under heating, the high glass transition (Tg) and char yield of the PMR polyimide can be attributed to the self-reaction of phenylethynyl groups to result in a cross-linked structure. Tribological studies on both PMR type thermosetting polyimide and thermoplastic one showed that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the former polyimide were lower than that of the latter one under both similar and even more critical conditions. Scanning electron microscope examinations of worn surfaces and wear debris show that the wear type of the thermoplastic polyimide was adhesive wear and that of the thermosetting one was fatigue wear. In terms of all good tribological properties, this PMR-type thermosetting polyimide, due to its high PV limit, could be a potential candidate for tribo-material in dry sliding against steel under high speed and large load.  相似文献

Mo doped diamond-like carbon (Mo/DLC) films were deposited on Si substrates via unbalanced magnetron sputtering of molybdenum combined with plasma chemical vapor deposition of CH4/Ar. The microstructure of the films, characterized by transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction, was considered as a nanocomposite with nano-sized MoC particles uniformly embedded in the amorphous carbon matrix. The structure, morphology, surface composition and tribological properties of the Mo/DLC films before and after the atomic oxygen (AO) irradiation were investigated and a comparison made with the DLC films. The Mo/DLC films exhibited more excellent degradation resistant behaviors in AO environment than the DLC films, and the MoC nanoparticles were proved to play a critical role of preventing the incursion of AO and maintaining the intrinsic structure and excellent tribological properties of DLC films.  相似文献

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fabric (CF) was modified with strong HNO3 oxidation and then introduced into polyimide (PI) composites. The friction and wear properties of the carbon fabric reinforced polyimide composites (CFRP), sliding against GCr15 stainless steel rings, were investigated on an M-2000 model ring-on-block test rig under dry sliding. Experimental results revealed that the carbon fiber surface treatment largely reduced the friction and wear of the CFRP. Compared with the untreated ones, the surface-modified CF can enhance the tribological properties of CFRP efficiently due to the improved adhesion between the CF and the PI matrix. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of the carbon fiber surface showed that the fiber surface became rougher and the oxygen concentration increased greatly after surface treatment, which improved the adhesion between the fiber and the PI matrix and improved the friction-reduction and anti-wear properties of the CFRP. State-of-the-art means of physical materials science are used to study the structure, phase composition, defect substructure, and tribological properties of a coating formed on low-carbon Hardox 450 martensite steel via the electrocontact deposition of an Fe–C–Ni–B wire and modified through subsequent irradiation with high-intensity pulsed electron beams. It is shown that electron-beam treatment results in the formation of a modified 50-μm thick surface layer, the main phases of which are the α-phase, iron boride FeB, and boron carbide B4C. In the layer modified by electron-beam treatment, the transverse size of batch martensite crystals is reduced by a factor of 3, relative to the initial Hardox 450 steel, and ranges from 50 to 70 nm. It is established that the wear resistance of the deposited layer after electron-beam treatment grows by more than 20 times with respect to the wear resistance of Hardox 450 steel, and the friction coefficient is reduced by a factor of 3.5. The microhardness of a deposited layer ~7 mm thick is more than double that of the base metal.  相似文献

Carbon fabric reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites with different PTFE content, viz. 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 vol%, were fabricated by a dispersion impregnation technique followed by a hot-press process. The composites were evaluated for their mechanical and tribological properties. The tribological tests were conducted on a friction and wear tester with a ring-on-block arrangement. The mechanical properties were also tested and their relationship with tribological properties was analyzed. The worn surface and wear debris were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study the wear mechanism. It was found that the resin content had a great influence on both the mechanical properties and the tribological properties, and the tribological properties were correlated with the mechanical properties. The composite with 50 vol% PTFE showed promising tribological behaviors under the selected test conditions.  相似文献

In the study, samples of AZ91 magnesium alloy were subjected to a surface remelting treatment by means of a continuous wave (cw) CO2 laser. The scope of the investigation included both macro- and microstructural examination, hardness measurements, and wear resistance tests. The investigation has shown that remelting treatment leads to a strong refinement of structure in the surface layer and a more even distribution of phases. Fine α-phase dendrites have been observed to dominate in the remelting zone. The dendritic arm spacing in the laser treated surface was in the range of 1–2.5 μm. The structural changes triggered by remelting have contributed to an increase in the hardness and the wear resistance of AZ91 alloy. The microhardness of the remelted zone has increased to 71–93 HV0.05 for single-strip remelting and to 84–107 HV0.05 for multi-strip remelting in comparison with about ~60 HV0.05 for untreated alloy. The friction coefficient has decreased from 0.375 for material w/o treatment to 0.311 for remelted material. SEM investigations of samples after tribological tests have revealed the presence of parallel grooves proving the occurrence of microploughing and micro cutting of the material during the tribological testing. The results of the conducted investigation have indicated a beneficial influence of the cw-CO2 laser remelting treatment on the structure and properties of AZ91 alloy.  相似文献

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, ripples) were generated on stainless steel (100Cr6) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces upon irradiation with multiple femtosecond laser pulses (pulse duration 30 fs, central wavelength 790 nm). The experimental conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas (5 × 5 mm2) covered homogeneously by the nanostructures. The irradiated surface regions were subjected to white light interference microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealing spatial periods around 600 nm. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surface was characterized by reciprocal sliding against a ball of hardened steel in paraffin oil and in commercial engine oil as lubricants, followed by subsequent inspection of the wear tracks. For specific conditions, on the titanium alloy a significant reduction of the friction coefficient by a factor of more than two was observed on the laser-irradiated (LIPSS-covered) surface when compared to the non-irradiated one, indicating the potential benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications.  相似文献

Carbon fibers-reinforced polyimide composites (CF-PI) were fabricated by means of a hot press molding technique. To contrast the effects of ultraviolet and atomic oxygen irradiation under high vacuum on the tribological properties of CF-PI composites, the friction and wear properties of the composites sliding against GCr15 steel ball before and after irradiation were conducted in high vacuum on a ball-on-disk test rig. The experimental results revealed that CF-PI composites exhibited higher modulus and lower coefficient of friction and worn rate value than pure polyimide under high vacuum. However, the coefficient of friction of composites increased and the worn rate value decreased after ultraviolet or atomic oxygen irradiation, which slightly affected the tribological properties of CF-PI composites. The chemical composition of the composites changed after irradiation was inspected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Microstructure of the worn surfaces of the tested composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy to reveal the wear mechanism.  相似文献

Abstract

It is important to optimize the properties of a material for a particular application, hence, to find the suitable material for tribological applications, the wear and friction behaviour of AA5052 in situ composites with different kind of reinforcements have been investigated. For present study, three in situ formed composites have been produced with different reinforcements namely Al3Zr, ZrB2 and combination of both (Al3Zr + ZrB2) by direct melt reaction (DMR) technique. The as-cast composites and base alloy have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, electron microscopy, tensile testing, hardness and dry sliding wear and friction tests. XRD results indicate the successful formation of second phase reinforcement particles in all composites. Wear test results indicate that the cumulative volume loss increases with an increase in sliding distance while coefficient of friction shows a fluctuating tendency, whereas with increasing applied load, wear rate shows an increasing trend while coefficient of friction shows decreasing trend. The variation of wear rate with composites indicates that the composite with multiple reinforcement (Al3Zr + ZrB2) has lowest wear rate among all as-cast composites and base alloy, while coefficient of friction is higher. The responsible mechanisms concerned with wear and friction results have been discussed in detail with the help of the observation on worn surface analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D-profilometer. All tribological results have been correlated with the microstructural properties, strength parameters and bulk hardness of the composites.  相似文献
