The problem of two dimensional stagnation point flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid impinging normally on a heated surface in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field is analyzed. The governing continuity, momentum, angular momentum, and heat equations together with the associated boundary conditions are reduced to dimensionless form using suitable similarity transformations. The reduced self similar non-linear equations are then solved numerically by an algorithm based on the finite difference discretization. The results are further refined by Richardson’s extrapolation. The effects of the magnetic parameter, the micropolar parameters, and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature fields are predicted in tabular and graphical forms to show the important features of the solution. The study shows that the velocity and thermal boundary layers become thinner as the magnetic parameter is increased. The micropolar fluids display more reduction in shear stress as well as heat transfer rate than that exhibited by Newtonian fluids, which is beneficial in the flow and thermal control of polymeric processing.  相似文献

Based on the restudies of existing polar continuum theories rather complete systems of basic balance laws and equations for micropolar continuum theory are presented. In these new systems not only the additional angular momentum, surface moment and body moment produced by the linear momentum, surface force and body force, respectively, but also the additional velocity produced by the angular velocity are considered. The new coupled balance laws of linear momentum, angular momentum and energy are reestablished. From them the new coupled local and nonlocal balance equations are naturally derived. Via contrast it can be clearly seen that the new results are believed to be rather general and complete. The transient problem of coupled heat and mass transfer of a micropolar fluid in magneto‐hydrodynamic free convection from a vertical infinite porous plate with an exponentially decaying heat generating considering the viscous dissipation and ohmic heating effects is studied. Joule heating must be considered when the viscous dissipation and the Prandtl number are large. The non‐dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and concentration are solved by means a numerical technique based on electric analogy (network simulation method). This method provides the numerical response of the system by running the network in circuit resolution software with the solution to both transient and steady‐state problems at the same time, and its programming does not require manipulation of the sophisticated mathematical software that is inherent in other numerical methods. The effects of the material parameters, viscous dissipation, internal generation and Joule heating on velocity, angular momentum and temperature fields across the boundary layer are investigated. In addition, the skin‐friction coefficient, couple stress coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are shown in tabular form. The numerical results for velocity and temperature distributions of micropolar fluids are compared with the corresponding flow problems for a Newtonian fluid. The mixed convective flow of a steady, incompressible micropolar fluid over a stretching sheet has been studied. This situation may arise in polymer technology involving the stretching of plastics sheets. The resulting system of non-linear ordinary coupled differential equations has been solved by the finite element method, using the variational Ritz model. Numerical results obtained for velocity, microrotation and temperature distributions are shown graphically. It was found that an increase in the micropolar parameter leads to a faster rate of cooling of the sheet. Also the velocity increases with an increase in micropolar effects. Microrotation effects are much smaller for the no-spin boundary condition as compared to the other boundary condition which assumes that the gyration vector is identical to the angular velocity of the fluid. Laminar flow of micropolar fluid in rectangular microchannels   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Compared with the classic flow on macroscale, flows in microchannels have some new phenomena such as the friction increase and the flow rate reduction. Papautsky and co-workers explained these phenomena by using a micropolar fluid model where the effects of micro-rotation of fluid molecules were taken into account. But both the curl of velocity vector and the curl of micro-rotation gyration vector were given incorrectly in the Cartesian coordinates and then the micro-rotation gyration vector had only one component in the z-direction. Besides, the gradient term of the divergence of micro-rotation gyration vector was missed improperly in the angular moment equation. In this paper, the governing equations for laminar flows of micropolar fluid in rectangular microchannels are reconstructed. The numerical results of velocity profiles and micro-rotation gyrations are obtained by a procedure based on the Chebyshev collocation method. The micropolar effects on velocity and micro-rotation gyration are discussed in detail. The project was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (10472054). The effects of micro-rotation and vortex viscosity in micropolar fluids have been investigated numerically to determine heat transfer by natural convection between concentric and vertically eccentric spheres with specified mixed boundary conditions. Calculations were carried out systematically for several different eccentricities and a range of modified Rayleigh numbers to determine the average Nusslet numbers which are affected by the micropolar parameters (F) of the flow and temperature fields. The skin friction stress on the walls has also been studied and discussed. The governing equations, in terms of vorticity, stream function, temperature and angular momentum are expressed in a spherical polar coordinate system. Results were obtained for steady heat-transfer in spherical annuli at a Prandtl number of 0.7, with the modified Rayleigh number ranging from 103 to 5 × 105, for a radius ratio of 2.0 and eccentricities varying from −0.625 to +0.625. Comparisons are attempted between the Newtonian fluid and micropolar fluid.  相似文献

The electroosmotic flow of a micropolar fluid in a microchannel bounded by two parallel porous plates undergoing periodic vibration is studied. The equations for conservation of linear and angular momentums and Gauss' s law of charge distribution are solved within the framework of the Debye-H¨uckel approximation. The fluid velocity and microrotation are assumed to depend linearly on the Reynolds number. The study shows that the amplitude of microrotation is highly sensitive to the changes in the magnitude of the suction velocity and the width of the microchannel. An increase in the micropolar parameter gives rise to a decrease in the amplitude of microrotation. Numerical estimates reveal that the microrotation of the suspended microelements in blood also plays an important role in controlling the electro-osmotically actuated flow dynamics in microbio-fluidic devices.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer effects on the unsteady flow of a micropolar fluid through a porous medium bounded by a semi-infinite vertical plate in a slip-flow regime are studied taking into account a homogeneous chemical reaction of the first order. A uniform magnetic field acts perpendicular to the porous surface absorb micropolar fluid with a suction velocity varying with time. The free stream velocity follows an exponentially increasing or decreasing small perturbation law. Using the approximate method, the expressions for the velocity microrotation, temperature, and concentration are obtained. Futher, the results of the skin friction coefficient, the couple stress coefficient, and the rate of heat and mass transfer at the wall are presented with various values of fluid properties and flow conditions.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of free convection boundary layer flow on a solid sphere in a micropolar fluid with Newtonian heating, in which the heat transfer from the surface is proportional to the local surface temperature, is considered. The transformed boundary layer equations in the form of partial differential equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical solutions are obtained for the local wall temperature, the local skin friction coefficient, as well as the velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the material or micropolar parameter K, the Prandtl number Pr and the conjugate parameter γ are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

This paper reports a detailed numerical investigation on mixed convection flow of a polar fluid through a porous medium due to the combined effects of thermal and mass diffusion. The energy equation accounts for heat generation or absorption, while the nth order homogeneous chemical reaction between the fluid and the diffusing species is included in the mass diffusion equation. The governing equations of the linear momentum, angular momentum, energy and concentration are obtained in a non-similar form by introducing a suitable group of transformations. The final set of non-similar coupled non-linear partial differential equations is solved using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with quasi-linearization technique. The effects of various parameters on the velocity, angular velocity, temperature and concentration fields are investigated. Numerical results for the skin friction coefficient, wall stress of angular velocity, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also presented.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of a non-axisymmetric swirling jet of an incompressible viscous fluid flowing in a space flooded with the same fluid. The far field of the jet is studied under the assumption that the angular momentum vector corresponding to the swirling of the jet is not collinear to the momentum vector of the jet. It is shown that the main terms of the asymptotic expansion of the full solution for the velocity field are determined by the exact integrals of conservation of momentum, mass, and angular momentum. An analytical solution of the problem describing the axisymmetric swirling jet is obtained.  相似文献

This investigation examines the time dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow problem of a micropolar fluid between two radially stretching sheets. Both strong and weak concentrations of microelements are taken into account. Suitable transformations are employed for the conversion of partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. Solutions to the resulting problems are developed with a homotopy analysis method (HAM). The angular velocity, skin friction coefficient, and wall couple stress coefficient are illustrated for various parameters.  相似文献

The effects of magnetic field and thermal radiation on a micropolar fluid flow near a stagnation point towards a moving surface are investigated. Numerical solutions for the transformed non-linear ordinary differential equations are obtained using the fourth order Rung-Kutta integration scheme coupled with the shooting method. The effects of the magnetic parameter, the material parameter, the radiation parameter and the Prandtl number on the velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles are displayed graphically and investigated. Also the numerical values of the local skin-friction coefficient and the Nusselt number for various values of the physical parameters are entered in tabular form and discussed.  相似文献

An analysis is presented for the problem of free convection with mass transfer flow for a micropolar fluid via a porous medium bounded by a semi-infinite vertical porous plate in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The plate moves with constant velocity in the longitudinal direction, and the free stream velocity follows an exponentially small perturbation law. A uniform magnetic field acts perpendicularly to the porous surface in which absorbs the micropolar fluid with a suction velocity varying with time. Numerical results of velocity distribution of micropolar fluids are compared with the corresponding flow problems for a Newtonian fluid. Also, the results of the skin-friction coefficient, the couple stress coefficient, the rate of the heat and mass transfers at the wall are prepared with various values of fluid properties and flow conditions.  相似文献

This paper examines the Stokes' flow due to an axially symmetric body rotating about its axis of symmetry in a micropolar fluid which sustains anti-symmetric stress and couple stress. General solutions are obtained to the coupled differential equations governing such a flow and the special case of a sphere is deduced. Then, with the aid of a concentrated couple, a simple formula for the couple experienced by a body is derived in terms of the angular velocity of the flow field.  相似文献

In this paper, the field equation of micropolar fluid with general lubrication theory assumptions is simplified into two systems of coupled ordinary differential equation. The analytical solutions of velocity and microrotation velocity are obtained. Micropolar fluid lubrication Reynolds equation is deduced. By means of numerical method, the characteristics of a finitely long journal bearing under various dynamic parameters, geometrical parameters and micropolar parameters are shown in curve form. These characteristics are pressure distribution, load capacity, coefficient of flow flux and coefficient of friction. Practical value of micropolar effects is shown, so micropolar fluid theory further closes to engineering application.  相似文献

A regular perturbation analysis is presented for three laminar natural convection flows in micropolar fluids in liquids with temperature dependent viscosity: a freely-rising plane plume, the flow above a horizontal line source on an adiabatic surface (a plane wall plume) and the flow adjacent to a vertical uniform flux surface. While these flows have well-known power-low similarity solutions when the fluid viscosity is taken to be constant, they are non-similar when the viscosity is considered to a function of temperature. A single similar flow, that adjacent to a vertical isothermal surface, is also analysed for comparison in order to estimate the extent of validity of perturbation analysis. The formulation used here provides a unified treatment of variable viscosity effects on those four flows. Computed first-order perturbation quantities are presented for all four flows. Numerical results for velocity, angular velocity and thermal functions has been shown graphically or tabulated for different values of micropolar parameters. Received on 20 October 1997  相似文献

The effect of melting heat transfer on the two dimensional boundary layer flow of a micropolar fluid near a stagnation point embedded in a porous medium in the presence of internal heat generation/absorption is investigated. The governing non-linear partial differential equations describing the problem are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations solved numerically using the Chebyshev spectral method. Numerical results for velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically and discussed for different values of the inverse Darcy number, the heat generation/absorption parameter, and the melting parameter. The effects of the pertinent parameters on the local skin-friction coefficient, the wall couple stress, and the local Nusselt number are tabulated and discussed. The results show that the inverse Darcy number has the effect of enhancing both velocity and temperature and suppressing angular velocity. It is also found that the local skin-friction coefficient decreases, while the local Nusselt number increases as the melting parameter increases.  相似文献

The (static) energy-momentum tensor, angular momentum tensor and scaling flux vector of micropolar elasticity are derived within the framework of Noether’s theorem on variational principles. Certain balance (or broken conservation) laws of broken translational, rotational and dilatational symmetries are found including inhomogeneities, elastic anisotropy, body forces, body couples and dislocations and disclinations present. The non-conserved J-, L- and M-integrals of micropolar elasticity are derived and discussed. We gave explicit formulae for the configurational forces, moments and work terms.  相似文献
