Novel derivative series of the well known bent-shaped P-n-O-PIMB liquid crystal mesogens, referred to as ‘4Br-P-n-O-PIMB’, ‘4Cl-P-n-O-PIMB’ and ‘5Cl-P-n-O-PIMB’, having halogen atoms substituted on the phenyl ring in the central core, were synthesized by solution phase parallel synthesis based on a combinatorial approach. The mesomorphic behaviour and physical properties of all the new compounds were studied by means of optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray and circular dichroism spectroscopy. We found interesting transitional behaviour for the 4Br-P-n-O-PIMB homologous series. The homologues with alkyl tails having carbon numbers of n=3–10, 12, 14 exhibit rather complicated mesomorphic behaviour, which is strongly sensitive to n. The chiral fluid smectic B2 phase with SmCAPA structure and unidentified smectic Bx phase were observed in the homologues with n=9, 10, 12, 14 and n=3–5, respectively. Interestingly, every member exhibits frustrated and/or helical ordered phases at low temperatures, designated as X1, X2, and X3 phases, which result from a spontaneous escape from a macroscopic polarization. The mesomorphic behaviour and mesophase structures differ remarkably from those of the parent P-n-O-PIMB homologues, suggesting that substitution of the halogen atoms at the central core essentially creates a particular interaction between molecules.  相似文献

New liquid crystalline chloro-substituted thioesters containing two and three benzene rings have been synthesized. 4-Chlorophenyl 4-n-alkoxythiobenzoates and 4-chlorophenyl 4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy-4'-thiobenzoates are referred to as nO.SCl and nO.OSCl, respectively, where n varies from 4 to 16 for nO.SCl, from 4 to 10 for nO.OSCl and denotes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by means of polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, transmittance light intensity and X-ray diffraction measurements. The nO.SCl homologous series possesses smectic A (SmA) and nematic (N) phases for n = 4, 5, 6 while higher homologues have only an enantiotropic SmA phase. Those from the nO.OSCl homologous series have enantiotropic N and SmA phases and higher transition temperatures. The range of the N phase decreases, and of the SmA increases, with the elongation of the alkoxy chain in the nO.OSCl homologous series. The effect on mesomorphic behaviour of terminal alkoxy chain lengthening and replacement by chlorine on the other side of the molecule is discussed.  相似文献

Novel chiral amides (Ia-Ie, II) and azo compounds (III, IV) with a 1,3,4-thiadiazole unit in the rigid core were synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The amides Ia-Ie contain a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (R)-2-octanol and an achiral chain varying from 6 to 10 carbon atoms at the end of the rigid core. In amide II one of the terminal group is a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (S)-isoleucine and the other terminal substituent is an achiral n-decyloxy chain. Azo compounds III and IV contain an achiral n-decyloxy chain and a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (R)-2-octanol and (S)-isoleucine, respectively, at the end of the rigid core. The first homologue in the series of amides (Ia) exhibits enantiotropic smectic X (SmX)-chiral nematic (N*) dimorphism and the homologues Ib-Ie display enantiotropic SmX-chiral smectic C (SmC*)-N* mesomorphism. Amide II displays an enantiotropic smectic A phase. The azo compounds III and IV do not show smectic order and only an enantiotropic N* phase was observed. Thus, the mesomorphic behaviour depends on the nature of the central linkage and on the nature of the chiral alkoxy chain.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligooxyethylene spacers were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. These series all contain a smectic A (SA), a chiral smectic C (SC) and a crystal E (Cr E) phase sequence. The ordered smectic Cr E phase was observed for the short spacer chain (n = 0, 1, 2) homologues of the two series. Moreover, the mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of the oligooxyethylene spacer length, and the position of the aromatic core rings. These results indicate that the structures with a rigid part (biphenyl group) closer to the flexible spacer chain (oxyethylene unit) tend to form the symmetrical smectic SA and Cr E phases.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a new series of liquid crystals derived from quinoline with an imine central bond is described. All compounds exhibit mesophase ranges greater than 50°C. The lower homologues (n = 4-6) show trimorphism Sc-Sa-N (for n = 4, the Sc phase is monotropic). The higher homologues (n = 7-10) show nematic and smectic C phases. Compared to the styrylquinoline analogues the imine bond gives rise to similar liquid crystal phase ranges but lower melting points.  相似文献

Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure-property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (-60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

The symmetrically difluorinated aryl-acetylene dimers, 1,4-bis[2-(3',3'-difluoro-4',4'-di-n-alkyloxyphenyl)ethynyl]benzenes (n = 7-12), were prepared by a one pot phase transfer. Pd(0)/Cu(I) catalysed, three step coupling of 1,4-diiodobenzene with 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol and the appropriate 1-bromo-3-fluoro-(4-n-alkyloxy)benzene. All members of the series display enantiotropic nematic and smectic C phases as well as an additional smectic mesophase in the sequence C-S-SC-N-I. The textures observed by polarized optical microscopy strongly support identification of the second smectic phase as a SE mesophase. The SC temperature window increases as the length of the n-alkyloxy substituent increases, whereas the stability of the nematic and SE temperature windows decrease. In these fluorinated dimers, destabilization of mesomorphic behaviour by lateral fluorine substitution is compensated by stabilization due to the large length to breadth ratio of the mesogen, such that melting and crystallization are depressed more than isotropization when compared to the non-fluorinated dimers.  相似文献

A series of trifluoro-substituted benzoate derivatives: (S)-1-ethylheptyl 4-[4-(4-alkyloxy-3- fluorobenzoyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoyloxy]-2-fluorobenzoates is reported. The short chain members (n = 8 to n = 11) display a direct SmC*A-SmA transition, whereas for longer chains a SmC* phase appears, but no ferrielectric phases are present, and a direct SmCA*-SmC* transition is obtained. The mesomorphic properties were studied by optical microscopy and DSC, and by electro-optical, helical pitch and optical rotatory power measurements. The effect of the number and position of the fluoro substituents, and the influence of the chiral moiety on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

3,3',4,4'-Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) was investigated as the central core unit in mesogenic molecules. Of particular interest was whether the BPDA unit could be self-constrained into a trans-conformation, and thus organize into a liquid crystalline phase. Two homologous series of symmetrical substituted model compounds, 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxy-N-N'-bis-(4-n- alkylphenyl) diimides and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxy-N-N'-bis-(4-n- alkoxyphenyl)diimides were synthesized. For both series high temperature smectic A phases were observed. To our knowledge these are the first examples of liquid crystalline behaviour observed with BPDA as the mesogenic core.  相似文献

Nine members of the octa-n-alkanoyloxy-9,10-anthraquinone series, ranging from octanoyloxy (n = 8) to hexadecanoyloxy (n = 16) (where n is the number of carbon atoms per chain), were prepared and their mesomorphic properties studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. All the compounds studied are mesomorphic with the higher homologues exhibiting two (for n ≧ 12) or even three (for n ≧ 14) columnar mesophases. For n = 8 to 11, the phase sequence is C-DB-I, where DB is an optically biaxial mesophase with a two-dimensional pgg symmetry. For n = 12, 13, the phase sequence is C-M3-DB-I, where M3 is a highly ordered phase whose structure has not been identified. Finally for n = 14 to 16, the phase sequence is C-M3-DB-DA-I, where DA is an hexagonal phase. In all cases, the phases change from high to low order with increasing temperature and all transitions are first order. Compared with the corresponding hexa-substituted naphthoquinones the present series generates larger mesomorphic ranges and the higher homologues exhibit a uniaxial phase which is lacking in the hexa-substituted series. The increase in volume occupied by the aliphatic chains in the octa-substituted series is evidently sufficient to reduce the interaction between the aromatic cores of the different columns to permit the stability of a uniaxial phase.  相似文献

Binary mixtures are composed of compounds belonging to the 4'cyanobiphenyl-4-yl 4'-n -alkylbiphenyl-4 carboxylate homologous series and halogenophenyl 4-(trans-4-n-decylcyclohexyl)benzoate (10XPCHB) have been studied. Compounds CBnAB are smectic A1 for n ≤ 7 and smectic Ad for n ≥ 8; compounds 10XPCHB are smectic A, only. It was found that the SAd phase of compounds CBnAB exhibits ideal miscibility with the SA1 phase of compounds 10XTCHB, and that the SA1 phases of both compounds show abnormal behaviour. The SA1 phase of compounds CBnAB is destabilized and the range of the SA1 phase is enhanced on the side of 10XPCHB. The reasons for this behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

With the aim of developing new oligothiophene-based liquid crystals involving hydrogen bonding, new terthiophene derivatives containing an alkylamide group, N,N'-distearyl-2,2' : 5',2"-terthiophene-5,5"-dicarboxamide (DNC183T) and N,N'-dialkyl-5,5"-dibromo-2,2' : 5',2"-terthiophene-4,4"-dicarboxamides (DNCnDBr3T, n = 5, 8, 16, 18), were designed and synthesized, and their thermal behaviour examined. While DNC183T did not exhibit liquid crystallinity, DNCnDBr3T compounds with n = 8, 16, 18 were found to form smectic A phases. In addition to liquid crystal behaviour, crystal polymorphism was also observed for DNC16DBr3T. It is shown that both the position of the amido group and the alkyl chain length greatly affect liquid crystal phase formation. The absence of liquid crystallinity in the corresponding ester derivatives suggests that intermolecular hydrogen bonding also plays a role in the formation of liquid crystal phases in the DNCnDBr3T system.  相似文献

Novel ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds, containing the (S)-2-methyl-l -butyl (4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate mesogenic group and an oligooxyethylene spacer, were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of these materials were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurement. The results indicate that all members of this series exhibit a very broad temperature mesophase range (reaching a maximum around 210°C) including a blue phase (BP), cholesteric (Ch), twist grain boundary A (TGBA), chiral smectic C (S*c), and smectic X (Sx) phases. The mesomorphic properties are discussed and a comparison is made with three phenyl rings of ester core analogues.  相似文献

A homologous series of di(4-alkyloxybenzoates) of 4,4'-dimercaptobiphenyl: CH3(CH2)n-1O-C6H4-COS-C6H4-C6H4-SOC-C6H4-O(CH2)n-1CH3,n=1-7, has been synthesized and the thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour investigated. All compounds exhibit enantiotropic mesomorphism over a remarkable temperature range. While the mesophase thermal stability is moderately higher than that found for the corresponding oxygenated analogues, the smectic stability is definitely lower. In fact, all the compounds are nematic but smectic mesomorphism (SC) is observed for n = 7. Compounds with n = 6 or 7 exhibit enantiotropic highly ordered smectic (or disordered crystal) phases, probably SG in type.  相似文献

Some of the higher homologues of the N-(p-n-alkoxybenzylidene)p-n-alkylanilines, n O.m, compounds with n ≧ 8 and m ≧ 5 have been synthesized and the smectic polymesomorphism studied. The transition temperatures were obtained from both thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. These compounds in the n O.m series exhibit the usual phase sequences, viz. SASCSBSG, and SASBSG apart from SASCSFSG by 9O.8 (and some higher n O.m, like 9O.6). These phases were confirmed by miscibility studies with standard materials. The smectic F phase in 9O.8 compound is also confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study.  相似文献

A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C8) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C3 to C11. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C9 to C11 methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced.  相似文献

A homologous series of novel two-ring alkoxythiophene-containing liquid crystals has been synthesized using a recently developed cyclization methodology to construct the heterocyclic core. The new heterocyclic unit is expected to confer high negative dielectric anisotropy and high dielectric biaxiality when incorporated into suitable mesogenic structures. The materials reported here possess nematic phases, with the longer chain homologues displaying smectic mesomorphism. In all cases the clearing points are significantly enhanced when compared with other two-ring thiophene-based mesogens. The synthesis, mesomorphic behaviour and stability are discussed, and the mesomorphic behaviour is compared with the analogous 4-alkoxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl derivatives synthesized by Gray.  相似文献

A new series of ferrocene derivatives, 1,1'-bis[4(4'-alkyloxy) benzaldimine]ferrocene dicarboxylates, (FeESADCn, where the number of carbon atoms in the alkyloxy chain, n, varies from 4-12) have been synthesized. The thermal behaviour was investigated by means of polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All members of the series exhibit liquid-crystalline behaviour. While the shorter chain members exhibit a nematic mesophase, the longer chain members exhibit a smectic A mesophase. The electronic spectrum of the n = 7 member is also presented.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterization, and mesomorphic properties of a new type of heteronuclear compounds 1a-c and a Pd complex 1d derived from benzoxazole as the core group are reported. These compounds were prepared by the ring closure reaction of 4-alkoxybenzoic acid 4-[(4-alkoxy-2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl]phenyl esters 6 in the presence of lead(IV) acetate. All the compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. The phase behaviour of these mesogenic compounds was characterized and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. All the compounds 1a exhibited nematic (N) and/or smectic C (SmC) phases, as expected for rod-like molecules; however, the compounds 1b and 1c exhibited crystal phases. For those compounds 1a having shorter carbon chains (n = 1, 3, 4) nematic phases were observed, whereas for compounds having longer carbon chains (n = 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14) smectic C behaviour was also observed at lower temperatures. The greater aspect ratio (l/d) of compounds 1a compared with 1b and 1c was found to be required for the observation of liquid crystallinity. The fluorescent properties of these compounds were also examined. All λmax peaks of the absorption and photoluminescence spectra of compounds 1a-1c occurred at c. 316-322 nm and 371-382 nm, respectively. The quantum yields of some compounds were relatively low, and also slightly solvent-dependent.  相似文献
