We propose that there are two classes of temporal development in the degradation of permeability of porous media due to deposition of fines: (1) Deposition, and therefore permeability degradation, is localized to bands growing orthogonally to the average local flow direction, and (2) permeability degradation occurs in stripes parallel to the local flow direction. These latter stripes do not influence total permeability much as they develop. When these stripes are allowed to develop, they coalesce and worm holes form. We discuss how imposing different flow conditions such as constant flow and constant pressure influence the deposition process. Our conclusion is that constant pressure conditions typically lead to a slower permeability degradation compared to constant flow conditions as a direct consequence of the formation of low-permeability bands. We test our ideas by numerical simulations on a simple model for fines migration and deposition in porous media.  相似文献

We describe scale up of geological models of field-scale porous media using a new method based on the wavelet transformations. The porous media of interest contain broadly-distributed and correlated permeabilities. Wavelet transformation of the permeability field of such porous media coarsens the geological model from smallest to largest length scales, drastically reduces the number of equations to be solved, preserves the important information on the permeability field at all the relevant length scales, and yields numerical results for any fluid flow property that are as accurate as those that are obtained with the highly detailed geological model of the same porous media. To test this method, we carry out extensive computer simulations of unstable miscible displacement processes and the associated viscous fingering phenomenon in highly heterogeneous porous media, both with the fine-scale geological model and the coarsened model. Excellent agreement is found between the results of the two sets of simulations.  相似文献

Low pressure gas percolation characteristic in ultra-low permeability porous media is investigated in this article through core flow experiments. The results show that the wall-slip layer covers more than 10% of the average porous channel radius on account of minimum pore size when the permeability is below 0.1 × 10?3μ m 2 order, and seepage behavior is contrasted to that in mid-high permeability pore media. When the gas pressure is not high enough, the flow regime turns into transitional flow instead of slip flow, and nonlinear relationship between the measured gas permeability and the reciprocal of average pressure exists. The gas measuring permeability experiment would be influenced by the non-linear relationship. If Klinkenberg-corrected method is applied to speculate the equivalent liquid permeability, the extrapolated value will become less or minus. Simultaneously, actual gas flow velocity at the outlet is beyond the calculated value with Klinkenberg formula. A new gas seepage model based on the general slip boundary condition is derived from the homogenization technique in this article. At last the flow model is examined to be suitable for representing the gas flow behavior in ultra-low permeability media and estimating the absolute permeability from single-point, steady-states measurements.  相似文献

Forchheimer’s equation, considered to be a nonlinear extension of the linear Darcy’s law, applies to a broader range of velocities for flows through porous media. In this article, we examine sensitivity of the Forchheimer model to permeability κ and a nonlinear coefficient β, using both experimental and computational data for validation. In addition to the direct observations, we were able to identify the role of temperature which influences the model by means of viscosity and density of the fluid. To get a quantifiable answer, we introduce a sensitivity index. Our results reveal a significant impact of the temperature to the model behavior.  相似文献

Layered Thermohaline Convection in Hypersaline Geothermal Systems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Thermohaline convection occurs in hypersaline geothermal systems due to thermal and salinity effects on liquid density. Because of its importance in oceanography, thermohaline convection in viscous liquids has received more attention than thermohaline convection in porous media. The fingered and layered convection patterns observed in viscous liquid thermohaline convection have been hypothesized to occur also in porous media. However, the extension of convective dynamics from viscous liquid systems to porous media systems is complicated by the presence of the solid matrix in porous media. The solid grains cause thermal retardation, hydrodynamic dispersion, and permeability effects. We present simulations of thermohaline convection in model systems based on the Salton Sea Geothermal System, California, that serve to point out the general dynamics of porous media thermohaline convection in the diffusive regime, and the effects of porosity and permeability, in particular. We use the TOUGH2 simulator with residual formulation and fully coupled solution technique for solving the strongly coupled equations governing thermohaline convection in porous media. We incorporate a model for brine density that takes into account the effects of NaCl and CaCl2. Simulations show that in forced convection, the increased pore velocity and thermal retardation in low-porosity regions enhances brine transport relative to heat transport. In thermohaline convection, the heat and brine transport are strongly coupled and enhanced transport of brine over heat cannot occur because buoyancy caused by heat and brine together drive the flow. Random permeability heterogeneity has a limited effect if the scale of flow is much larger than the scale of permeability heterogeneity. For the system studied here, layered thermohaline convection persists for more than one million years for a variety of initial conditions. Our simulations suggest that layered thermohaline convection is possible in hypersaline geothermal systems provided the vertical permeability is smaller than the horizontal permeability, as is likely in sedimentary basins such as the Salton Trough. Layered thermohaline convection can explain many of the observations made at the Salton Sea Geothermal System over the years.  相似文献

While macroscopic longitudinal and transverse dispersion in three-dimensional porous media has been simulated previously mostly under purely advective conditions, the impact of diffusion on macroscopic dispersion in 3D remains an open question. Furthermore, both in 2D and 3D, recurring difficulties have been encountered due to computer limitation or analytical approximation. In this work, we use the Lagrangian velocity covariance function and the temporal derivative of second-order moments to study the influence of diffusion on dispersion in highly heterogeneous 2D and 3D porous media. The first approach characterizes the correlation between the values of Eulerian velocity components sampled by particles undergoing diffusion at two times. The second approach allows the estimation of dispersion coefficients and the analysis of their behaviours as functions of diffusion. These two approaches allowed us to reach new results. The influence of diffusion on dispersion seems to be globally similar between highly heterogeneous 2D and 3D porous media. Diffusion induces a decrease in the dispersion in the direction parallel to the flow direction and an increase in the dispersion in the direction perpendicular to the flow direction. However, the amplification of these two effects with the permeability variance is clearly different between 2D and 3D. For the direction parallel to the flow direction, the amplification is more important in 3D than in 2D. It is reversed in the direction perpendicular to the flow direction.  相似文献

A stochastic analysis of macrodispersion for conservative solute transport in three-dimension (3D) heterogeneous statistically isotropic and anisotropic porous media when both hydraulic conductivity and local dispersivity are random is presented. Analytical expressions of macrodispersivity are derived using Laplace and Fourier transforms. The effects of various parameters such as ratio of transverse to longitudinal local dispersivity, correlation length ratio, correlation coefficient and direction of flow on asymptotic macrodispersion are studied. The behaviour of growth of macrodispersivity in preasymptotic stage is also shown in this paper. The variation in local dispersion coefficient causes change in transverse macrodispersivity. The consideration of random dispersivity along with random hydraulic conductivity indicates that the total dispersion is affected and important in the case when the hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity are correlated. It is observed that the pre-asymptotic behavior of the macrodispersivity is not sensitive to the choice of spectral density functions.  相似文献

A simple, explicit model for the transverse permeability of porous media comprised of alternating layers of tows of varying permeability has been proposed. The development of the model is based on results of numerical simulations as well as an earlier developed analytical model for the permeability of such systems (Markicevic and Papathanasiou, 2003). Based on the above, as well as on physical arguments regarding the flow across such dual porosity media, we formulate an explicit model in terms of dimensionless permeabilities. Extensive validation of the model is carried out through numerical simulations using the CFD package FIDAP. A good agreement between the permeabilities predicted by the simple explicit model and those calculated numerically is found. From this model, the form of a master curve for the permeability of such system has been deduced.  相似文献

This paper gives an overview on nonlinear porous flow in low permeability porous media, reveals the microscopic mechanisms of flows, and clarifies properties of porous flow fluids. It shows that, deviating from Darcy's linear law, the porous flow characteristics obey a nonlinear law in a low-permeability porous medium, and the viscosity of the porous flow fluid and the permeability values of water and oil are not constants. Based on these characters, a new porous flow model, which can better describe low permeability reservoir, is established. This model can describe various patterns of porous flow, as Darcy's linear law does. All the parameters involved in the model, having definite physical meanings, can be obtained directly from the experiments.  相似文献

A lattice gas automaton (LGA) model is proposed to simulate fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media. Permeability fields are created by distributing scatterers (solids, grains) within the fluid flow field. These scatterers act as obstacles to flow. The loss in momentum of the fluid is directly related to the permeability of the lattice gas model. It is shown that by varying the probability of occurrence of solid nodes, the permeability of the porous medium can be changed over several orders of magnitude. To simulate fluid flow in heterogeneous permeability fields, isotropic, anisotropic, random, and correlated permeability fields are generated. The lattice gas model developed here is then used to obtain the effective permeability as well as the local fluid flow field. The method presented here can be used to simulate fluid flow in arbitrarily complex heterogeneous porous media.  相似文献

A clear understanding of two-phase flows in porous media is important for investigating CO2 geological storage. In this study, we conducted an experiment of CO2/brine flow process in porous media under sequestration conditions using X-ray CT technique. The flow properties of relative permeability, porosity heterogeneity, and CO2 saturation were observed in this experiment. The porous media was packed with glass beads having a diameter of 0.2 mm. The porosity distribution along the flow direction is heterogeneous owing to the diameter and shape of glass beads along the flow direction. There is a relationship between CO2 saturation and porosity distribution, which changes with different flow rates and fractional flows. The heterogeneity of the porous media influences the distribution of CO2; moreover, gravity, fractional flows, and flow rates influence CO2 distribution and saturation. The relative permeability curve was constructed using the steady-state method. The results agreed well with the relative permeability curve simulated using pore-network model.  相似文献

The analysis of two-phase flow in porous media begins with the Stokes equations and an appropriate set of boundary conditions. Local volume averaging can then be used to produce the well known extension of Darcy's law for two-phase flow. In addition, a method of closure exists that can be used to predict the individual permeability tensors for each phase. For a heterogeneous porous medium, the local volume average closure problem becomes exceedingly complex and an alternate theoretical resolution of the problem is necessary. This is provided by the method of large-scale averaging which is used to average the Darcy-scale equations over a region that is large compared to the length scale of the heterogeneities. In this paper we present the derivation of the large-scale averaged continuity and momentum equations, and we develop a method of closure that can be used to predict the large-scale permeability tensors and the large-scale capillary pressure. The closure problem is limited by the principle of local mechanical equilibrium. This means that the local fluid distribution is determined by capillary pressure-saturation relations and is not constrained by the solution of an evolutionary transport equation. Special attention is given to the fact that both fluids can be trapped in regions where the saturation is equal to the irreducible saturation, in addition to being trapped in regions where the saturation is greater than the irreducible saturation. Theoretical results are given for stratified porous media and a two-dimensional model for a heterogeneous porous medium.  相似文献

This article presents a new nonlinear finite‐volume scheme for the nonisothermal two‐phase two‐component flow equations in porous media. The face fluxes are approximated by a nonlinear two‐point flux approximation, where transmissibilities nonlinearly depend on primary variables. Thereby, we mainly follow the ideas proposed by Le Potier combined with a harmonic averaging point interpolation strategy for the approximation of arbitrary heterogeneous permeability fields on polygonal grids. The behavior of this interpolation strategy is analyzed, and its limitation for highly anisotropic permeability tensors is demonstrated. Moreover, the condition numbers of occurring matrices are compared with linear finite‐volume schemes. Additionally, the convergence behavior of iterative solvers is investigated. Finally, it is shown that the nonlinear scheme is more efficient than its linear counterpart. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Relative permeability functions for immiscible displacements in porous media show a wide range of profiles. Although, this behavior is well known, its impact on the stability of the displacement process is unexplored. Our analysis clearly demonstrates for the first time that the viscous instability characteristics of two-phase flows are governed not only by their end point values, but are strongly dependent on the actual profile of relative permeability functions. Linear stability analysis predicts the capacity of the flow to develop large scale fingers which can result in substantial bypassing of the resident fluid. It is observed that relative permeability functions attributed to drainage processes yield a more unstable displacement as compared to functions related to imbibition processes. Moreover, instability is observed to increase for those relative permeability functions which result from increased wettability of the wetting fluid. High accuracy numerical simulations show agreement with these predictions and demonstrate how large amplitude viscous fingers result in significant bypassing for certain relative permeability functions. In the nonlinear regime, the finger amplitude grows at a rate ∝ t1/2 initially, drops to t1/4 at a later time and finally grows ∝ t. The basic mechanisms of finger interaction, however, are not substantially influenced by relative permeability functions.  相似文献

We study the evolution of the water–oil front for two-phase, immiscible flow in heterogeneous porous media. Our analysis takes into account the viscous coupling between the pressure field and the saturation map. Although most of previously published stochastic homogenization approaches for upscaling two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media neglect this viscous coupling, we show that it plays a crucial role in the dynamics of the front. In particular, when the mobility ratio is favorable, it induces a transverse flux that stabilizes the water–oil front, which follows a stationary behavior, at least in a statistical sense. Calculations are based on a double perturbation expansion of equations at first order: the local velocity fluctuation is defined as the sum of a viscous term related to perturbations of the saturation map, on one hand, plus the perturbation induced by the heterogeneity of the permeability field with a base-state saturation map, on the other hand. In this companion paper, we focus on flows in isotropic media. Our results predict the dynamics of the water–oil front for favorable mobility ratios. We show that the statistics of the front reach a stationary limit, as a function of the geostatistics of the permeability field and of the mobility ratio evaluated across the front. Results of numerical experiments and Monte-Carlo analysis confirm our predictions.  相似文献

Hydraulic flow, electrical flow and the passage of elastic waves through porous media are all linked by electrokinetic processes. In its simplest form, the passage of elastic waves through the porous medium causes fluid to flow through that medium and that flow gives rise to an electrical streaming potential and electrical counter-current. These processes are frequency-dependent and governed by coupling coefficients which are themselves frequency-dependent. The link between fluid pressure and fluid flow is described by dynamic permeability, which is characterised by the hydraulic coupling coefficient (Chp). The link between fluid pressure and electrical streaming potential is characterised by the streaming potential coefficient (Csp). While the steady-state values of such coefficients are well studied and understood, their frequency dependence is not. Previous work has been confined to unconsolidated and disaggregated materials such as sands, gravels and soils. In this work, we present an apparatus for measuring the hydraulic and streaming potential coefficients of high porosity, high permeability consolidated porous media as a function of frequency. The apparatus operates in the range 1 Hz to 2 kHz with a sample of 10 mm diameter and 5–30 mm in length. The full design and validation of the apparatus are described together with the experimental protocol it uses. Initial data are presented for three samples of Boise sandstone, which present as dispersive media with the critical transition frequency of 918.3?±?99.4 Hz. The in-phase and in-quadrature components of the measured hydraulic and streaming potential coefficients have been compared to the Debye-type dispersion model as well as theoretical models based on bundles of capillary tubes and porous media. Initial results indicate that the dynamic permeability data present an extremely good fit to the capillary bundle and Debye-type dispersion models, while the streaming potential coefficient presents an extremely good fit to all of the models up to the critical transition frequency, but diverges at higher frequencies. The streaming potential coefficient data are best fitted by the Pride model and its Walker and Glover simplification. Characteristic pore size values calculated from the measured critical transition frequency fell within 1.73% of independent measures of this parameter, while the values calculated directly from the Packard model showed an underestimation by about 12%.

For a two-phase immiscible flow through a heterogeneous porous medium in gravity field but with neglected capillary pressure, a macroscale model of first order is derived by a two-scale homogenization method while capturing the effect of fluid mixing. The mixing is manifested in the form of a nonlinear hydrodynamic dispersion and a transport velocity shift. The dispersion tensor is shown to be a nonlinear function of saturation. In the case offlow without gravity this function is proportional to the fractional flow derivative and depends on the viscosity ratio. For a flow which is one dimensional at the macroscale, the dispersion operator remains three dimensional and can be calculated in an analytical way. In the case of gravity induced flow, the longitudinal dispersion as the function of saturation is negative within some interval of saturation values. Numerical simulations of the microscale problemjustify the theoretical results of homogenization.  相似文献
