We consider the quantum magnet at LiHo(x)Y(1-x)F(4) at x = 0.167. Experimentally the spin glass to paramagnet transition in this system was studied as a function of the transverse magnetic field and temperature, showing peculiar features: for example, (i) the spin glass order is destroyed much faster by thermal fluctuations than by the transverse field; and (ii) the cusp in the nonlinear susceptibility signaling the glass state decreases in size at lower temperature. Here we show that the hyperfine interactions of the Ho atom must dominate in this system, and that along with the transverse inter-Ho dipolar interactions they dictate the structure of the phase diagram. The experimental observations are shown to be natural consequences of this.  相似文献

Anisotropic dipolar systems are considered. Such systems in an external magnetic field are expected to be a good experimental realization of the transverse field Ising model. With random interactions, this model yields a spin glass to paramagnet phase transition as a function of the transverse field. We show that the off-diagonal dipolar interaction, although effectively reduced, induces a finite correlation length and thus destroys the spin-glass order at any finite transverse field. We thus explain the behavior of the nonlinear susceptibility in the experiments on LiHo(x)Y(1-x)F(4), and argue that a crossover to the paramagnetic phase, and not quantum criticality, is observed.  相似文献

When performed in the proper low-field, low-frequency limits, measurements of the dynamics and the nonlinear susceptibility in the model Ising magnet in a transverse field LiHo(x)Y(1-x)F(4) prove the existence of a spin-glass transition for x=0.167 and 0.198. The classical behavior tracks for the two concentrations, but the behavior in the quantum regime at large transverse fields differs because of the competing effects of quantum entanglement and random fields.  相似文献

We examine the evolution of magnetic properties in the normal spinel oxides Mg(1-x)Cu(x)Cr2O4 using magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The end-member compounds of the solid solution series have been studied in some detail because of their very interesting magnetic behavior. MgCr2O4 is a highly frustrated system that undergoes a first-order structural transition at its antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. CuCr2O4 is tetragonal at room temperature as a result of Jahn-Teller active tetrahedral Cu2+ and undergoes a magnetic transition at 135 K. Substitution of magnetic cations for diamagnetic Mg2+ on the tetrahedral A site in the compositional series Mg(1-x)Cu(x)Cr2O4 dramatically affects magnetic behavior. In the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ ≈0.3, the compounds are antiferromagnetic. A sharp peak observed at 12.5 K in the heat capacity of MgCr2O4 corresponding to a magnetically driven first-order structural transition is suppressed even for small x. Uncompensated magnetism--with open magnetization loops--develops for samples in the x range ≈0.43 ≤ x ≤ 1. Multiple magnetic ordering temperatures and large coercive fields emerge in the intermediate composition range 0.43 ≤ x ≤ 0.47. The Néel temperature increases with increasing x across the series while the value of the Curie-Weiss Θ(CW) decreases. A magnetic temperature-composition phase diagram of the solid solution series is presented.  相似文献

We present a study of the magnetic properties of Zr(1-x)NbxZn2, using an Arrott plot analysis of the magnetization. The Curie temperature Tc is suppressed to zero temperature for Nb concentration xc = 0.083+/-0.002, while the spontaneous moment vanishes linearly with Tc as predicted by the Stoner theory. The initial susceptibility chi displays critical behavior for x or= xc we find that chi(-1) = chi0(-1) + aT(4/3), where chi0(-1) vanishes as x-->xc. The resulting magnetic phase diagram shows that the quantum critical behavior extends over the widest range of temperatures for x=xc, and demonstrates how a finite transition temperature ferromagnet is transformed into a paramagnet, via a quantum critical point.  相似文献

We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of Eu(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2 (x = 0-1) and carried out systematic characterization using x-ray diffraction, ac and dc magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. A clear signature of the coexistence of a superconducting transition (T(c) = 5.5 K) with spin density wave (SDW) ordering is observed in our underdoped sample with x = 0.15. The SDW transition disappears completely for the x = 0.3 sample and superconductivity arises below 20 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with increase in the K content and a maximum Tc = 33 K is reached for x = 0.5, beyond which it decreases again. The doping dependent Tx phase diagram is extracted from the magnetic and electrical transport data. It is found that magnetic ordering of Eu moments coexists with the superconductivity up to x = 0.6. The isothermal magnetization data taken at 2 K for the doped samples suggest the 2+ valence state of the Eu ions. We also present the temperature dependence of the lower critical field H(c1) of the superconducting polycrystalline samples. The values of H(c1)(0) obtained for x = 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 after taking the demagnetization factor into account are 202, 330, and 212 Oe, respectively. The London penetration depth λ(T) calculated from the lower critical field does not show exponential dependence at low temperature, as would be expected for a fully gapped clean s-wave superconductor. In contrast, it shows a T2 power law feature up to T = 0.3Tc, as observed in Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2 and BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As2.  相似文献

Studies of magnetization, magnetoresistance, and magnetic oscillations in semiconductor-multiferroics Eu(1-x)Ce(x)Mn2O5 (x = 0.2-0.25) (ECMO) at temperatures ranging from 5 to 350 K in magnetic fields up to 6 T are presented. It is shown that phase separation and charge carrier self-organization in the crystals give rise to a layered superstructure perpendicular to the c axis. An effect of magnetic field cycling on the superstructure, magnetization, and magnetoresistance is demonstrated. X-ray diffraction studies of ECMO demonstrating the effect of magnetic field on the superstructure are presented. The de Haas-van Alphen magnetization oscillations in high magnetic fields and the temperature-induced magnetic oscillations in a fixed magnetic field are observed at low temperatures. Below 10 K the quantum corrections to magnetization due to the weak charge carrier localization in 2D superlattice layers occur. It is shown that at all the temperatures the Eu(1-x)Ce(x)Mn2O5 magnetic state is dictated by superparamagnetism of isolated ferromagnetic domains.  相似文献

We investigate the influence of Sb-doping on the martensitic transformation and magnetocaloric effect in Mn_(50)Ni_(40)Sn_(10-x)Sb_x(x = 1, 2, 3, and 4) alloys. All the prepared samples exhibit a B2-type structure with the space group F m3 m at room temperature. The substitution of Sb increases the valence electron concentration and decreases the unit cell volume. As a result, the magnetostructural transformation shifts rapidly towards higher temperatures as x increases. The changes in magnetic entropy under different magnetic field variations are explored around this transformation. The isothermal magnetization curves exhibit typical metamagnetic behavior, indicating that the magnetostructural transformation can be induced by a magnetic field. The tunable martensitic transformation and magnetic entropy changes suggest that Mn_(50)Ni_(40)Sn_(10-x)Sb_x alloys are attractive candidates for applications in solid-state refrigeration.  相似文献

Optimization of thin films of small bandwidth manganite, Pr(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 (for x = 0.1), and their magnetic properties are investigated. Using different pulsed laser deposition (PLD) conditions, several films were deposited from the stoichiometric target material on SrTiO3 (001) substrate and their thorough structural and magnetic characterizations were carried out using x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SQUID magnetometry and ac susceptibility measurements. A systematic investigation shows that irrespective of the growth temperature (between 550 and 750?°C), all the as-deposited films have twin boundaries and magnetic double phases. Post-annealing in partial or full oxygen pressure removes the extra phase and the twin boundaries. Zero-field-cooled magnetization data show an antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at around 100 K whereas the field-cooled magnetization data exhibit a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition close to 120 K. However, depending on the oxygen treatments, the saturation magnetization and Curie temperature of the films change significantly. Redistribution of oxygen vacancies due to annealing treatments leading to a change in ratio of Mn3+ and Mn4+ in the films is observed from XPS measurements. Low temperature (below 100 K) dc magnetization of these films shows metamagnetic transition, high coercivity and irreversibility magnetizations, indicating the presence of a spin-glass phase at low temperature. The frequency dependent shift in spin-glass freezing temperature from ac susceptibility measurement confirms the coexistence of spin-glass and ferromagnetic phases in these samples at low temperature.  相似文献

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect-induced temperature changes at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru0.96Rh0.04)2Si2, which yield irreversible properties similar to those at the valence transition of Yb(1-x)Y(x)InCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which lattice parameter changes caused by an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.  相似文献

A nonlinear optical crystal YCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) (YCOB) is phase matchable for third-harmonic generation (THG) of a Nd:YAG laser by type I mixing between 1.064 and 0.532mum . By partial substitution of Gd for Y in YCOB, a solid solution Gd(x)Y(1-x)Ca(4)O(BO(3))(3) gradually changes the phase-matching angles of THG to (theta, ?)=(90( degrees ), 90 ( degrees )) . We present the properties of noncritically phase-matched THG in Gd(x) Y(1-x)Ca(4)O(BO(3))(3) (x=0.28) .  相似文献

In situ temperature-dependent micro-Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction have been performed to study atomic vibration, lattice parameter and structural transition of proton-conducting Ba(Zr(0.8-x)Ce(x)Y(0.2))O(2.9) (BZCY) ceramics (x = 0.0-0.8) synthesized by the glycine-nitrate combustion process. The Raman vibrations have been identified and their frequencies increase with decreasing x as the heavier Ce(4+) ions are replaced by Zr(4+) ions. The main Raman vibrations of Ba(Ce(0.8)Y (0.2))O(2.9) appear near 305, 332, 352, 440 and 635 cm(-1). The X-O ( X=Ce, Zr, Y) stretching modes are sensitive to the variation of Ce/Zr ratio. A rhombohedral-cubic structural transition was observed for x = 0.5-0.8, in which the transition shifts toward higher temperature as cerium increases, except for Ba(Ce(0.8)Y(0.2))O(2.9). A minor monoclinic phase possibly coexists in the rhombohedral matrix for x = 0.5-0.8. The lower-cerium BZCYs (x = 0.0-0.4) ceramics do not exhibit any transition in the region of 20-900?°C, indicating a cubic phase at and above room temperature.  相似文献

We investigate the low-temperature magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds Tb1-xPrx(Fe0.4Co0.6)1.88C0.05(x = 0, 0.8, and 1) by detailed magnetization measurements. Obvious temperature- and field-induced irreversibilities suggest the coexistence of multiple magnetic phases. Sharp magnetization jumps across the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition are observed only in the Pr-containing samples, indicating that the behavior of the avalanche-like growth of ferromagnetic clusters is mainly related to the light lanthanide Pr ions. In addition, the time relaxation, field sweep rate, and cooling field dependence of magnetization jumps in the sample with x = 1 are consistent with those in the martensitic scenario.  相似文献

Two nonstoichiometric UAu_(1-x)Sb_2(x = 0.25, 0.1) single crystals are successfully synthesized using a flux method, and their physical properties are comprehensively studied by measuring the dc-magnetization and electrical resistivity. Evidence for at least three magnetic phases is found in these samples. In zero field, both samples undergo an antiferromagnetic transition at a relatively high temperature, and with further cooling they pass through another antiferromagnetic phase, before reaching a ferromagnetic ground state. Furthermore, the magnetic order can be tuned by varying the site occupation of Au. Such a tunable magnetic order may provide an opportunity for exploring the potential quantum critical behavior in this system.  相似文献

The magnetic properties and magnetoresistance effects of Dy_{1-x}Gd_xMn_6Ge_6 (x=0.1-0.6) compounds have been studied by magnetic properties and resistivity measurements in applied magnetic fields up to 5T. The compounds with x=0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.5 order antiferromagnetically at 425, 428, 430 and 432K, respectively, and there are second magnetic phase transitions below 100K. The compound with x=0.6 exhibits a transition from ferrimagnetic to antiferromagnetic, then to ferrimagnetic state again with decreasing temperature. Furthermore, it displays a field-induced metamagnetic transition, and its threshold field decreases with increasing temperature. The magnetoresistance curve of the compound with x=0.6 in applied magnetic fields up to 5T is presented and the magnetoresistance effects are related to the metamagnetic transitions.  相似文献

Recent spectroscopic observations of a d-wave-like gap in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 have led us to critically analyze the anisotropic transport and magnetization properties of this material. The data suggest that concomitant with the spin ordering is an electronic decoupling of the CuO(2) planes. We observe a transition (or crossover) to a state of two-dimensional (2D) fluctuating superconductivity, which eventually reaches a 2D superconducting state below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Thus, it appears that the stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) frustrates three-dimensional superconducting phase order, but is fully compatible with 2D superconductivity and an enhanced T(c).  相似文献

The present paper reports detailed structural and magnetic characterization of the low-bandwidth manganite Pr(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) (with x = 0.0-0.5) (PCMO) polycrystalline samples. With increasing Ca content, reduction of the unit cell volume and improvement in perovskite structure symmetry was observed at room temperature. Magnetic characterization shows the signature of coexisting AFM-FM ordering and spin-glass phase at the low doping range (x = 0.0-0.2) while increased hole doping (x = 0.3-0.5) leads to charge ordering, training effect and an irreversible metamagnetic phenomenon. The large irreversible metamagnetism in the CO phase of PCMO and the corresponding spin memory effect is a direct consequence of hysteretic first-order phase transition arising from the weakening of the CO state under the external magnetic field and trapping of the spins due to a strong pinning potential in the material.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of (Cox Fe1-x )A(Zn1-xFe1+x) BO4 are studied using mean-field theory and the probability distribution law to obtain the saturation magnetization, the coercive field, the critical temperature, and the exchange interactions with different values of D (nm) and x. High-temperature series expansions (HTSEs) combined with the Pad′e approximant are used to calculate the critical temperature of (Cox Fe1-x) A (Zn1-x Fe1+x) BO4 , and the critical exponent associated with magnetic susceptibility is obtained.  相似文献

We have succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals of the valence-fluctuating system EuIr(2)Si(2), the divalent Eu system EuRh(2)Si(2) and the substitutional alloy Eu(Rh(1-x)Ir(x))(2)Si(2) across the range 0 < x < 1, which we characterized by means of x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, specific heat, magnetization and resistivity measurements. On increasing x, the divalent Eu ground state subsists up to x = 0.25 with a slight increase in Néel temperature, while for 0.3≤x < 0.7 a sharp hysteretic change in susceptibility and resistivity marks the first-order valence transition. For x?0.7 the broad feature observed in the physical properties is characteristic of the continuous valence evolution beyond the critical end point of the valence transition line, and the resistivity is reminiscent of Kondo-like behaviour while the Sommerfeld coefficient indicates a mass renormalization of at least a factor of 8. The resulting phase diagram is similar to those reported for polycrystalline Eu(Pd(1-x)Au(x))(2)Si(2) and EuNi(2)(Si(1-x)Ge(x))(2), confirming its generic character for Eu systems, and markedly different to those of homologue Ce and Yb systems, which present a continuous suppression of the antiferromagnetism accompanied by a very smooth evolution of the valence. We discuss these differences and suggest them to be related to the large polarization energy of the Eu half-filled 4f shell. We further argue that the changes in the rare earth valence between RRh(2)Si(2) and RIr(2)Si(2) (R = Ce, Eu, Yb) are governed by a purely electronic effect and not by a volume effect.  相似文献
