The features of a phase transition between the strict striped domain structure in thin ferromagnetic films with transverse anisotropy and the so-called tetragonal phase, where domains can be twisted and broken into parts, have been analyzed. It has been shown that the phase transition should be thermodynamically treated as a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, where ends of domains serve as vortices. It has been demonstrated with the Wang-Landau numerical algorithm that the kinetics of this phase transition is strongly slowed down owing to the existence of a large number of metastable states; in this property, the system is partially similar to spin glasses.  相似文献

Optical experiments on the wetting properties of liquid 4He and molecular hydrogen are reviewed. Hydrogen films on noble metal surfaces serve as model systems for studying triple point wetting, a continuous transition between wetting and non-wetting. By means of optically excited surface plasmons, the adsorbed film thickness for temperatures around, and far below, the bulk melting temperature is measured, and the physical mechanisms responsible for the transition are elucidated. Possible applications for other experiments in pure and applied research are discussed. Thin films and droplets of liquid helium are studied on cesium surfaces, on which there is a first order wetting transition. Our studies concentrate on dynamical observations via surface plasmon microscopy, which provide insight into the morphology of liquid helium droplets spreading at different temperatures. Features corresponding to pinning forces, the prewetting line, and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition are clearly observed.  相似文献

We explore the relationship between the critical temperature T(c), the mobile areal carrier density n(2D), and the zero-temperature magnetic in-plane penetration depth lambda(ab)(0) in very thin underdoped NdBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) films near the superconductor to insulator transition using the electric-field-effect technique. Having established consistency with a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, we observe that T(KT) depends linearly on n(2D), the signature of a quantum superconductor to insulator transition in two dimensions with znu(over)=1, where z is the dynamic and nu is the critical exponent of the in-plane correlation length.  相似文献

A new implementation of the Finite Lattice Method of series expansion is used to derive low temperature series for the 6-state planar Potts model. This is expected to have Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions between the ordered low-temperature phase and a massless phase, and between the massless phase and a high-temperature disordered phase. In an exploratory study, we have analysed series for the order parameter to order x 59. These series have proved particularly difficult to analyse and when seeking to both locate the transition and confirm the form of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, considerable ambiguity is found. If however the form of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is assumed, then the series analysis consistently indicates that the lower transition occurs at x L=0.4886(10). A more conservative analysis, which made no assumption about the nature of the transition, led to the estimate x L=0.485(8).  相似文献

The type of a phase transition in the quasi-equilibrium system of exciton polaritons in a two-dimensional optical microcavity has been analyzed. It has been shown that, although the system contains two types of bosons undergoing mutual transformations into each other, only one phase transition to the superfluid state with the quasilong-range order occurs in the two-dimensional system. This phase transition is a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. A new physical implementation—excitons in a photon crystal—has been proposed for the Bose condensation of exciton polaritons. The superfluid properties of the ordered phase are discussed, and the superfluid density and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature have been calculated in the low-density approximation.  相似文献

报道了Yba2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO)颗粒膜的微波辐射(λ=8mm)响应的特征.实验结果表明:YBCO颗粒膜的微波响应行为不能用辐射热效应来描述,而应当属于非平衡响应行为.在超导转变温度T以下温区,非平衡微波响应信号电平随样品电阻R趋于零而消失,并且对弱的外磁场十分灵敏.在对样品的直流I-V特性进行了仔细测量后发现,样品的电输运行为具有准二维结构特征,可以用Kosterlitz-Thouless(K-T)相变模型加以描述.在此基础上,分析结果表明:YBCO颗粒膜中的非平衡微波响应机制可能与磁通“涡旋-反涡旋”束缚对的激发态有关. 关键词:  相似文献

Measurements of the IV characteristics of site-diluted Josephson-junction arrays have revealed intriguing effects of percolative disorder on the phase transition and the vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional XY system. Different from other types of phase transitions, the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition was eliminated with the introduction of percolative disorder far below the percolation threshold. Even after the Kosterlitz-Thouless order had been removed, the system remained superconducting at low temperatures by establishing a different type of order. Near the percolation threshold, evidence was found that, as a consequence of the underlying fractal structure, the critical dynamics of the phase degrees of freedom persisted down to zero temperature.  相似文献

ESR measurements are reported for the quasi-two-dimensional honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8. Planar anisotropic properties are confirmed by angular dependent investigations of resonance field and linewidth. The divergence of the temperature-dependent linewidth on approaching T(N) from above is described in terms of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, the critical behavior close to long-range magnetic order, and the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We provide arguments that the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario is compatible with the observed critical exponent and suggest BaNi2V2O8 is a weakly anisotropic 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet.  相似文献

The transition temperature to superfluid state was found as a function of exciton-photon detuning. A two-dimensional system of atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice is studied theoretically. If the system is finite in one direction, it is shown to exhibit a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a one-dimensional Mott insulating chain of superfluid tubes. Monte Carlo simulations are consistent with the expectation that the phase transition is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. The effect of the transition on experimental time-of-flight images is discussed.  相似文献

We study one-dimensional disordered bosons at large commensurate filling. Using a real space renormalization group approach, we find a new random fixed point which controls a phase transition from a superfluid to an incompressible Mott glass. The transition can be tuned by changing the disorder distribution even with vanishing interactions. We derive the properties of the transition, which suggest that it is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.  相似文献
